- dilbert, on 05/29/2009, -0/+27Malaria isn't caused by mosquitoes, it's caused by a protozoan parasite and they are becoming more resistant to the drugs. Not the mosquitoes.
- Suits, on 05/29/2009, -1/+8Mosquitoes suck.
- aforsberg, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7Evolution. Suck it creationists.
- Whatasillyhat, on 05/29/2009, -5/+9...yay evolution?
Hmm. - bobbi21, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3Not completely solved but it would help a lot. Sad you're being dugg down.
- JDLamb88, on 05/29/2009, -1/+4Except malaria kills millions each year and swine flu is trying as hard as it can to make it into the thousands.
- gcnaddict, on 05/29/2009, -3/+5Buried for orangederange not reading the articles and then fudging what the articles are about when submitting them to digg.
The protozoans which cause Malaria are one of five different species that are part of the Plasmodium genus. They live their lives in between Anopheles mosquitoes and humans. It's these little suckers that are becoming resistant, not the mosquitoes. - liuite, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3GlaxoSmithKline has a vaccine which is being supplied to African nations, courtesy of Bill Gates foundation.
- madk, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2I will never EVER buy anything from your company.
- lyric123, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1Why do some people do something like faking drugs for a serious and fatal disease as malaria? These people ought to be punished for what they've done! If this is what caused for the malaria parasites to become resistant to the drug, they should be put behind bars, or better yet expose them to malaria-causing-mosquitoes! That should teach them a lesson they can't forget! Researchers are now faced with the challenge to find another drug that will prove more effective than what we have today.

- kartman2001, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1If you want us to check it out why not provide a link? I for one call BS because of the whole "The govt knows about this but they dont want healthy people, killing people is the goal of govt." part. Dead people don't pay taxes and Governments love taxes.
- bobbi21, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Because extinction of an entire species that is essential to the ecosystem is always the way to go...
- Mejogid, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2Well said, I have no idea why the poster changed the title to make it less accurate and include a made up quote.

- Justavian, on 05/29/2009, -4/+4Well, it's nice that mosquitoes these days are finally getting the self confidence and self control to resist the peer pressure to try malaria drugs. Bravo, teen mosquitoes!
- nattas684, on 07/27/2009, -0/+0i was wondering if anybody could help me? im doing an assignment and i have to explain in terms of natural selection how the malaria parasite is becoming resistant to current forms of treatment
- cdyson37, on 05/29/2009, -2/+2It's interesting how one can tell that it's a BBC headline without troubling to check the URL: there isn't a news agency in the world with a greater affection for the use of superfluous single quotes in headlines.
- sndream, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1He told you to close down everything.
- IneffablePolk, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1This is why I drink gin and tonics.
Also, they are delicious. And glow like a magic potion if the bar has black lights. - JDLamb88, on 05/29/2009, -0/+0Yeah, a real American bird would have long flowing locks and be jamming on a guitar!
- sndream, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Why don't we nuke the place while we are at it.
- kartman2001, on 05/30/2009, -1/+1Yeah a lot of people don't know that tonic water used to be used as a natural defense against malria.
- adrian108, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1mms , sodium chlorite kills malaria in 5 hours. it is called mms because it is the miracle mineral solution. The govt knows about this but they dont want healthy people, killing people is the goal of govt. it is cheap and readily available. check it out
- bobbi21, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Irradicating mosquitoes actually didn't work out so well. With mass DDT spraying you do get resistance, which has been seen in a lot of the countries they tried that in. And it of course only works in areas with seasonal mosquitoes otherwise you'll be spraying 24/7.
Current idea is just to DDT human habitations. Around houses and mosquito netting or something like that. With low amounts you won't die too much anyway :P - bobbi21, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Yeah, it made me think that we're starting to treat mosquitoes for malaria. It's at least theoretically possible.
Poor title. - m3arvk, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1President Madagascar?
- diggbru, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Evolution in action. What now, creationists?
- Piquet13, on 05/29/2009, -1/+0While it's true that a parasite, not the mosquito causes malaria, mosquitos are the primary mechanism by which the parasite is spread. The problem with DDT use in the past was how it was applied, not the chemical itself. Unfortunately, as with many issues, popular opinion (in this case, that of environmentalists) is just that, opinion, and governments respond to that, rather than facts. The fact is that malaria could be nearly eliminated within 10 years with the proper use of DDT with little environmental impact. The flip side, however, is the Darwinian impact of dysfunctional policies, such as banning DDT, on world population. Many environmentalists, and not a few policy makers believe that the world has too many people, a situation that needs correcting. Long live the tree huggers!
- explainstuff, on 05/29/2009, -1/+0That is evolution. You try to constrain 'something', 'it' finds a way or other to overcome. This is not just with Malaria parasites, it is true with many others. How effective are the pesticides these days? We are using stronger pesticides decade by decade. The parasites will keep getting immune.
It's also with human beings. Look at the rising temperatures.....we'll find a way out soon to cope with it. Probably the silver masks that reflect most heat would be out by around 2050 when temp probably will get to around 120 or above.

Everybody welcome
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming - dwbdcg, on 05/29/2009, -1/+0Drug policy needs to change from eradication & interdiction of recreational drugs to increased enforcement & control of fake & low quality drugs. What happened with the drug resistant TB problem in the Russian Federation?
- bombula, on 05/29/2009, -3/+2We should probably focus on irradicating mosquitoes moreso than the malaria paramecium. It'd make summer nights a lot more pleasant too. Too bad DDT causes so much collateral damage...
- shrudheuie, on 05/29/2009, -1/+0We give these countries lots of marlaria drugs with specific instructions on how to administer and use them. instead, they try to "conserve" the meds by not doing complete cycles. Now the drugs are becoming useless. I'm sure they are glad the conserved what will soon be useless drugs as opposed to just using them as they are designed to be used.
- tkcom, on 05/29/2009, -5/+4***** bald eagles, bring back DDT!
- veriix, on 05/29/2009, -2/+1I didn't read the article, are these mosquitos talking at schools or something?
