- badqat, on 12/23/2008, -1/+73Teach a man how not to spread malaria and he learns how to fish?
- mriber16, on 12/23/2008, -2/+47Honestly, I'd rather die of Malaria than starvation.
- thesparrowband, on 12/23/2008, -2/+33they should overload them with nets, so they have enough for fishing and their beds if they are that cheap
- vuke69, on 12/23/2008, -2/+25The reason the nets are so effective at preventing the spread of malaria, is that they are treated with insecticide. WATER SOLUBLE insecticide.
- kubedawg, on 12/23/2008, -0/+20Dead people who had malaria?
- mrfish, on 12/23/2008, -0/+20*****, Somebody call them right now! Genius!
- Danktolker, on 12/23/2008, -1/+21Mesh snuggies would fix this problem. For you see, snuggies are blankets with sleeves.
- AmyVernon, on 12/23/2008, -1/+17teach a man to fish and he ... can fish.
- gkjones, on 12/23/2008, -0/+14hey captain obvious... RTFA
they treat them with insectisides.
like to share in that nice cup of clue? - kubedawg, on 12/23/2008, -1/+12because of the 400 BABIES!
- luckyscs, on 12/23/2008, -0/+10"A bed net is usually hung above the center of a bed or sleeping space so that it completely covers the sleeping person. A net treated with insecticide offers about twice the protection of an untreated net and can reduce the number of mosquitoes that enter the house and the overall number of mosquitoes in the area."
- Vektuz, on 12/23/2008, -0/+8I don't really think people rationally choose the insectile path of making lots of babies in the hope that one survives. I think people just make more babies because theres jack ***** education and birth control. Nobody sits there going "well *****, my kids are starving and covered in flies, I think the solution is to make more babies so theres even less food".
It also doesn't help that the catholic church is crusading against birth control in the region.
They convince the poor, starving populace that Jesus is the answer to all their problems (poor and needy people are a lot easier to convince), and that using birth control is evil and a sin. - Prosequi, on 12/23/2008, -1/+9Some argue that the nets were a poor substitute for DDT used in the proper concentrations (just a few spritzes around the home for a year's worth of protection), but that the US has banned the sale of DDT due to its former improper use of the chemical. Thus, the Kenyans are reduced to nets.
- asskicker32, on 12/23/2008, -0/+7I cant stop laughing at this. Becuase you are so right.
- OutrightLie, on 12/23/2008, -0/+7A Modest Proposal indeed.
- Aliwalla, on 12/23/2008, -0/+7can you fish with DDT?
- Aliwalla, on 12/23/2008, -2/+8They've been living with Malaria for millenia, if they want to use the nets to fish then they know best.
- 9bpm9, on 12/23/2008, -1/+7Mosquitoes should already be extinct. It may harm the environment by the ways we would have to do it, but the millions of people saved every year is worth it.

- alpharaptor, on 12/23/2008, -1/+7it's called 'pulling out'.
- riolio11, on 12/24/2008, -0/+5...wear them to a sporting event...
- ncsifsf08, on 12/23/2008, -2/+7How about they stop having so many damn kids?
- thetrza, on 12/24/2008, -1/+6If you can't afford any more children or a form of birth control maybe you shoulnd't be having sex.
- thetrza, on 12/24/2008, -0/+5Who the ***** is this guy, Kanye West?
- Jack8274, on 12/24/2008, -0/+5But then you would get malaria and die as well and have your corpse eaten then everyone that eats you dies and so on.
- Whackly, on 12/23/2008, -0/+5wtf
- Prosequi, on 12/24/2008, -1/+6Much of the aid comes from the US, include many of those nets.
- nesagwa, on 12/23/2008, -0/+5Probably.
- skubiszm, on 12/23/2008, -0/+4Watch this first,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRuNxHqwazs - ncsifsf08, on 12/23/2008, -0/+4They are "cheap" for THEM you dolt
- Jack8274, on 12/24/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I love how they give them AIDS... wait what the ***** are you talking about. Go ***** yourself.
- PopcornDave, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3But if you do that, what will all the children's charity groups do? You know the ones that run those ads late on Sunday night television saying you can own...sponsor a child for 43 cents a day? You'd put them out of business.
/S - charlietuna, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3I think the problem is related to water rinsing out the insecticide from the net (and into the river). A washed out net would provide a false sense of security.
- thetrza, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3It's not.
- 1hrSleep, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3Mm, insecticide flavoured fish.
- decker12, on 12/23/2008, -2/+5They should stop fishing and instead sustain themselves only on bacon. Or cheeseburgers. Or bacon cheeseburgers with a Bloomin' Onion and ranch chipolte dipping sauce. USA! USA! USA!
- MysticKatDaddy, on 12/23/2008, -2/+5That is one of the most awesome comments I've read today.
- JohnFlux, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3Given the state of the country, they clearly don't know what's best
- origamistars, on 12/24/2008, -1/+4@thetrza: yes, because if people don't have a method of birth control, they just won't have sex. That must be why abstinence-only sex education works so well.
- origamistars, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3The trouble is that there are plenty of birds and other insects (and FISH) that rely on mosquitoes as a food source. If the mosquitoes are gone, so are the birds, spiders, and fish.
But I guess then we wouldn't need nets at all if that happened... - inactive, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2There's all kinds of sex (oral & anal are but 2 of 'em) that will not produce more hungry mouths to feed. I don't think these people can possibly be THAT stupid...
- inactive, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2I dunno, but it's obviously not for population control.
- sodade, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2That's why we need to GE them so they just don't suck blood.
- thetrza, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2Maybe they should just use the nets correctly instead of eating insecticide covered fish.
- Aliwalla, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2Are they an incredibly unhappy people?
- chaseonfire, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2I'm not even American, but you have a problem with an entire country? I can tell you are level headed and unbiased . And if you went to Africa you would realize they are asking for help, they all are struggling to survive and barely getting by. Obviously I assume you are speaking about this story, because well you're commenting on it. Telling them they shouldn't be using these nets for fishing because they deminish the very purpose they are made for and put them at serious risk is hardly the wrong thing to do.
- JohnFlux, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2Aliwalla, they have an infant mortality rate more than 10 times higher than any western country, and a life expectancy of 56. Just 5 years ago the life expectancy was 45, but western aid has really helped.
So yeah, I can't imagine that they are too happy with that situation. - cddict1, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2best use of BED nets.
- breckinshire, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2It's the circle of life!
- origamistars, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2Why does the US's banning DDT affect the rest of the world?
