- andrihb, on 11/04/2009, -0/+17George: I don't want hope. Hope is killing me. My dream is to become hopeless. When you're hopeless you don't care. And when you don't care, that indifference makes you attractive
Jerry: So hopelessness is the key
George: Its my only hope - borez, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11"In total 41 people were told their colostomy was reversible and they could undergo a second operation to reconnect their bowels after several months and get rid of their colostomy bag.
Another 30 individuals were told that the colostomy was permanent."
Was this a kind of placebo study? Because, to be honest, if it was then it's pretty ***** up thing to do to the test group. - RealmDown, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Not really, but it sure makes it easier to rent.
- Paranor01, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7nice political attempt there. but obvious troll is obvious
- slave187, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Giving up all hope was freedom. Tyler's words coming out of my mouth.
- Stevosaurous, on 11/04/2009, -1/+5I gave up hope of ever having sex with jennifer love hewitt.... I'm definatly not happier...
- theghoul, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4I'm giving up hope that dupe stories will ever be suppressed.

- PiddlyD, on 11/04/2009, -1/+4I'd rather be RICH and miserable than POOR and miserable... but I'd rather be poor and happy than either.
The thing is, the human condition is misery - and it *is* a lot easier to deal with misery with money... so playing the odds, rich and unhappy is probably the best you can hope for. It is easier to forget how much life sucks when the seat-heater in your Escalade is warming your ass, than it is when your 1987 Plymouth Reliant has a window that doesn't roll up, a bad heater core, and it is 20 degrees F outside.
I think the "loss hope" thing is misleading, though. Apathy is what makes a person "happier" with their condition. I had a friend once, his wife was cheating on him with EVERYONE around him. He was the happiest guy in the world until he found out and couldn't let go. At some point, he did, though - "***** it", became his general attitude - and he became far more satisfied with life almost instantly. Ever have a friend who drives a piece of crap car, but he just doesn't CARE? How about the guys in high-school who didn't fit in anywhere, but didn't WANT to?
Yeah... this is the "I Don't Give a *****" factor. Give science it's Captain Obvious cap. - ChuckDees, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3There is a point to this article. If you can get beyond ease and disease you will arrive at contentment.
Most of the time the mental fear of illness is worse then the illness. Putting down the heavy baggage of the mental anguish will bring relief. - Crimeodial, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3Shut up. You're not even remotely relevant to what the article is about..
- RealmDown, on 11/04/2009, -1/+4It seems to work for Dr. House.
- thedarkrabbit, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Only when we hit rock bottom are we truly free to live.
- gsm54321, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Dr. Hibbert: Now, a little death anxiety is normal. You can expect to go through five stages. The first is denial.
Homer: No way, because I'm not dying!
Dr. Hibbert: Second is anger.
Homer: [yelling] Why you little!
Dr. Hibbert: After that comes fear.
Homer: [worried] What's after fear? What's after fear?!
Dr. Hibbert: Bargaining.
Homer: Doc, you gotta get me outta this. I'll make it worth your while.
Dr. Hibbert: Finally acceptance.
Homer: Well, we all gotta go sometime. - wheezy360, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Smoke weed and be happier
- diggopolous, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Yep, but when you hit rock bottom and think you're finally free, a trap door opens up and you plunge into the abyss.
- FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I always thought it was funny how the side of him that supposedly didn't care about anything wore hipster clothes and looked like he was in the gym all the time. There's that scene on the bus where Brad Pitt pointed to the ad with the male model and said, "Is that what a man looks like?", and yet it's what Pitt looked like.
- JeniBurns, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2It all comes down to, people need to be informed, and people need to be able to make educated decisions. Caretakers, doctors, and family members need to not think that saying "everything will be alright" in the face of death always fixes everything. Sometimes, it makes things worse, and not just for the patient.
I'm not saying that hope should be abandoned when it comes to serious cases. I'm saying that reality needs to play a part in a person's decisions on care that *might* save their life, but definitely *will* prolong their suffering. Since *might happen* happens a lot less often than *definitely will happen*, patients need realistic (but not necessarily cynical) information. - CaffieneMan, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I don't think it's so much as 'losing hope' as it is 'learning to accept'
you're always way happier if you roll with life, 'grabbing the bull by the horns' is just an expression that business exec's use to impress stock holders - FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I've never heard of a doctor telling someone that everything was going to be alright unless it clearly was.
- brundlefly76, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1I didn't give up on my fear of flying until I accepted that I was OK with dying in a plane crash.
Now it doesn't bother me at all. - denizen42, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Dugg for correct use of "you're"
- JeniBurns, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1It happens a lot more often than you think, especially with newer, less experienced doctors.
- MattBD, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1It makes sense in a way. If you get told you've got six months to live, then there's no point saving for the future or stressing about your job or anything like that. You might as well go and do all the things you've always wanted to do while you still can, and I can see how that would be liberating.
If I was told I had six months to live I'd quit my job and go and have a good time for however long I could. - WraTH017, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1"I Gave Up Hope And Died And It Worked!"
-Join the Book Club by George Carlin. - FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I'm sure the bums feel that way.
- FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1I love House, but that show is just tired now.
- 5thdigg, on 11/04/2009, -0/+0That's my general attitude about life. My wife does not like.
- VoidLogic, on 11/04/2009, -0/+0Gliving up hope?
- mhummel, on 11/04/2009, -0/+0"A man's first time at Fight Club, his arse was cookie dough; after a month he was carved out of wood. Fight Club became the reason to trim your nails and keep your hair short".
Oh, and who didn't immediately hear the voice of Edward Norton upon reading the grand parent comment? - crenzero, on 11/04/2009, -2/+0I honestly don't even know why we have the Kübler-Ross model, if people are making ***** retarded comments about losing hope
- TherealObadiah, on 11/04/2009, -9/+3I think a lot of us are willing to ditch hope (and change).
- gfryesc, on 11/04/2009, -9/+1sounds like an Obama backpedal to me.
