- aaabatteries, on 03/23/2008, -2/+20the gap is like 5 years at both extremes.
That's not a huge gap at all in my opinion... - MarkDykeman, on 03/23/2008, -4/+16Yes, and what about inherited money? Like, say, the Windsors? Good old long-lived Queen Mum.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 03/23/2008, -4/+15Lesson: don't drop out of school and expect society to pick up your tab.
- blast_flame, on 03/23/2008, -4/+13The real solution is technological progress. It over time makes everyone equal. There's even a theoretical point known as post scarcity where for all intensive purposes everyone becomes equally rich.
Keep in mind that the poor in developed countries today are richer then the kings of europe in the past. They can get a quick meal of almost anything they want, have bathing on demand and have the modern version of plays (television) on demand. - inactive, on 03/23/2008, -2/+11Now if we could just limit their ability to reproduce...
- sourceholder, on 03/23/2008, -2/+9When you're poor it's more difficult to afford good: food, medical care, doctors & clothing.
- YamiJim, on 03/23/2008, -4/+10i know plenty of poor smart people and even more stupid rich people.
Money is a function of opportunity/hardwork/luck if any 3 of those fails, your *****.
and by the way unless you are ALREADY well off the 1st one is pretty hard to come by. - zelig, on 03/23/2008, -4/+10Read it carefully. This is just another NYT political "vote Democrat" article disguised as a health news.
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -1/+6Uneducated (which usually equates to 'poor') people are also not great at understanding causal relationships. I've heard morons talk about how there were a lot less cancer deaths prior to filters, so it's obviously filters and not smoking that causes cancer. Never for a moment does the rate of diagnosis occur to them. I know someone who had a friend who took Tylenol for a splitting headache and then died of a stroke, so she believes that Tylenol killed her friend. It couldn't possibly be that the headache was the body's announcement that some bad ***** was coming down the line. Poor uneducated people make bad decisions about their health. They drink Diet Coke Plus because it has vitamins and they think that offsets the pizza and nachos they washed down with it.
- MrPig, on 03/23/2008, -2/+6Learn how to not make stupid comments?
- ScottMitchell, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Given your handle, I assumed you were a gay, testicle-fetish Asian man who had spent a lifetime in the mountains mastering the martial arts.
- wushin, on 03/23/2008, -8/+12NO, if your benefits suck you deserve it. I do not think that a taco bell employee and astronauts should get the same medical. Its all about life choices. you smoke, you get cancer. You eat like ***** and don't exercise you get fat. You drop-out of High School cause you got pregnant at 16 you work for minimum wage and ***** benefits. You don't get pregnant at 16 and go onto graduate college. You get a nice job with nice benefits.
- thailand1972, on 03/23/2008, -2/+6The real story is the age gap between men and women.
- HappyScrappy, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Yes, rich people are less likely to get crushed by a cement mixer because they're not working on construction sites, instead they sit behind desks.
The government can't make everything truly equal for everyone. What we should strive for is equal opportunity. Any person has a chance of becoming that white collar worker if they are smart enough and work hard enough. I know we're not there either, but that's a more realistic goal than trying to make it so that having money has no privileges. - Rotzooi, on 03/23/2008, -6/+10Reading these comments, I am both glad that I left the US, and ashamed of still being a US citizen.
"Function of IQ? ***** poor people? Take money from the rich? Get off your ass and get a job? Stop reproducing?"
***** hell, are only 12 year old KKK members digging during Easter? - lead2thehead, on 03/23/2008, -1/+5I did a research project on longevity back in college and found that the #1 factor above all else was stress. It increases your blood pressure, weakens your immune system, affects digestion, etc. And the poor certainly have more stress.
- captainbluebear, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4It's "intents and purposes" not "intensive purposes".
Your certainly correct in saying that technology is a great creator of equality. - ThatEvilGuy, on 03/23/2008, -3/+7Interesting, the penis sizes go in reverse Blacks > Whites > Jews > Asians.
- MajorCrazy, on 03/23/2008, -2/+6Idiocracy
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -2/+5Thanks for leaving.
We really put one over on whatever country took you. - Pedestrian101, on 03/23/2008, -6/+9Damn rich people, let's revolt and take all their money away! We deserve it!
- dbzer0, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3What a crock of *****. The cases where talented people are not capable of finding a job are more than enough example. It's called unemployment rate
- discochew, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3It looks to me like the disparity has kept pace with itself, and that the difference is less than 5 years on all graphs. Don't really see this as news. I mean, if the gap were 10 years or greater, or perhaps there were a significant difference between graphs I could see this as reportable, but from this information, all I see is a gradual increasing of life expectancy of all people.
- ScottMitchell, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4Life ain't fair. Good people have ***** luck. Bad people win accolades. Et cetera, et cetera.
Trying to instill fairness is not going to work. Logistically speaking, it is impossible for society to fix everyone's problems. Fortunately, life today in many countries makes it possible where one's individual choices can better their life and the lives of their loved ones. Yes, people will fall through the cracks. Yes, the smartest, hardest, nicest person in the universe may come down with a ravenous disease tomorrow and lack the money to fight it, but life just ain't fair sometimes. - inactive, on 03/23/2008, -11/+14God, will any of you ever get that it's all a function of IQ not money? Money follows IQ. Everything good and bad generally surrounds IQ. Break that down by race. You'll see that Asians and Jews beat whites who beat blacks.
Blah, blah, blah. You all need a good dose of Thomas Sowell. - inactive, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4Sure, but that opening sequence where the morons outbreed the nerdlington couple isn't just fiction. We've outsmarted natural selection and we're seeing the results already.
- ScottMitchell, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3You do realize that the vast majorities of millionaires in the United States (more than 80%) are first-generation millionaires, right?
http://www.nytimes.com/books/first/s/stanley-milli ... - Midtowner, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Love it.
Starvation is a terrific motivational device. - tuh2, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4If we take thier money then we would be rich....
- inkyblue2, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4that is the easiest conclusion to draw. interestingly, though, this graph shows that the changes over the past two decades have been occurring at the "least deprived" (i.e. richest) end of the spectrum, not the "most deprived" end. maybe what it's showing is an increasing number of effective but expensive medical treatments that are out of reach for many people.
i think there's truth to both conjectures, but i wanted to point out that "poor people can't afford a healthy life" is not the only conclusion that can be drawn from this graph. - nutsackninja, on 03/23/2008, -3/+6This is great news, because I am rich and white.
- kent1146, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Wood drastically underestimates the impact of social distinctions predicated upon wealth, especially inherited wealth.
You got that from Vickers. "Work in Essex County", page 98, right? Yeah, I read that too. - stretta, on 03/23/2008, -2/+5Great. If I'm rich, I get to spend five more years at a nursing home staring at the walls, while they drain my savings.
- CheeseburgerBro, on 03/23/2008, -3/+6They smell comparably, also.
- Joshper85, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Gotta remember a rich person can still eat badly and etc..
- tuh2, on 03/23/2008, -2/+5Lesson three: 90% of ***** schools teach you wont help you in your job career at all.
- supermanred, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3Poor people are poor by choice.
As soon as I read that I knew you were basically an ignoramus. - supermanred, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2you can't spell either!
I can believeable! - supermanred, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2But most likely wont. A poor person can eat well, too. Non processed foods are CHEAPER than fast food and junk.
Rolled oats - > 80 cents a pound. Cheerios > 5 bucks for a pound in a box.
Iced tea made from real tea > 20 cents a glass Iced Tea made from powdered ice tea mix (usually made from crap!) > 1 dollar a glass or more
etc - Midtowner, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2LaughingMan, whose fault is is it when someone is poor? When is anything ever the fault of the poor person?
- supermanred, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Rich people simply do not eat crap. Twinkies, foods stuffed with canola oil and vegetable oil and flavoring and coloring.
They eat REAL food, real bread and cheese and meat. None of this processed, fast food ***** the poorer (or in some cases also rich but dumber) eat.
Eat real food. Go to your local bulk store and buy actual food and cook it, it's soooo much tastier and good for you.
***** the corn oil corn syrup vegetable glucose caranuba wax *****.
If you cant picture it growing or dont know where it came from, ***** it. Dont eat that *****. - Scheissen, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Getting rid of welfare gets rid of unproductive people that are a strain on society. Then everyone will be "rich."
- Pedestrian101, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Im being sarcastic.. I hope everyone understands that.
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Heh...exactly. Why aren't we at least sterilizing the violent felons? You know there's probably a genetic predisposition at work there, but we just can't deprive gang-bangers of the chance to wildly procreate.
- LaughingMan11, on 03/23/2008, -3/+5The most devastating forms of disease are fair. These diseases don't care how you've lived your life, or how well you treat your body, or how much money you make. There are illnesses that simply occur randomly in our population.
So these diseases are fair in choosing who they affect, but the health care system is decidedly NOT. Given that people can be stricken randomly with diseases, is it fair to treat people's lives based on how much money they make? If you were poor and got colon cancer, what are your chances of recovery compared to if you were uber rich with the same disease?
This country was founded on the idea that our inalienable rights are to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. In the end, people seem to forget that LIFE is the first and foremost, yet our society would rather life be distributed according to wealth instead of being truly an inalienable right. - RagdollOp, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2We do have equal opportunity. Its not the riches fault that people don't care about success. Don't be lazy and quit being a victim. No one is holding you down but yourself!
- vertinox, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3Wells its logical...
With enough money you can afford the best surgeons and experts in the nation
And if you are really rich you can have them fly in from anywhere in the world.
Suffice to say, wealthy persons have the ability to see the doctor as much as they want and can even afford personal trainers and dietary experts if they so desire. Now, I'd bet some of the more wealthy eat beef cake and sit around on their couch and watch foot ball on their 100inch tv, but the poor really don't have that option of getting a dietitian or a personal trainer.
If they were smart and motivated they could educate themselves and/or go to the gym, but the majority of humans aren't. - gunnerrs, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2well now we can say money can buy life if not happiness
- lowhauler, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Likewise. Though it's interesting to hear what some of the neighbours call conversation.
- bowe, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2How do you like 'them' apples?!
