- hbyrne, on 04/23/2009, -5/+22Doesn't this fall under the category of the cure being worse than the ailment?
- KnightMareInc, on 04/23/2009, -0/+12asthma can be life threatening, so no.
- serif69, on 04/23/2009, -0/+12I hate to nitpick, but I think the author's a louse for suggesting this is some sort of solution.
- audiblesilence, on 04/23/2009, -1/+12Honey, I've got good news and bad news.
The bad news...I've given you crabs.
The good news, your allergies are gone.
Call it even? - prompel, on 04/23/2009, -1/+11"The study, published in the BioMed Central journal BMC Biology, adds to evidence supporting the so-called hygiene hypothesis, which holds that the rise in asthma and allergies can be linked to hyper-clean living.
The idea is that if the immune system is not properly primed in childhood, immune cells can improperly react to harmless triggers such as pollen or bits of dander."
There's a reason kids eat dirt. It's good for them! - Lonewolfx77, on 04/23/2009, -0/+6Growing up in the country, my sister and I ran around in dirt, mud, grass, cow *****...pretty much anything. If we dropped food on the ground, we picked it right back up and ate it (usually). We didn't wash our hands before meals unless they were visibly dirty, went barefoot the majority of the time, and didn't shy away from dirt and grime.
Can't remember the last time either of us went to the doctor. I've never been hospitalized and never had anything worse than a cold. Cleanliness is overrated. - sockpuppets, on 04/23/2009, -0/+5Dad?
- mavranos, on 04/23/2009, -2/+7Hmmm. I doubt the hygiene hypothesis. I ate bark, played in septic tank overflow, stagnant water, creeks, lakes, vacant lots, swamps, with road kill, rats, squirrels, lizards, bugs of all types, suffered bouts of impetigo, ran from baths like the tub was filled with acid... I was a dirty, rough playing kid.
In the past ten years I have developed allergies and suspect allergic asthma. It sucks. - Scrappy1850, on 04/23/2009, -1/+6lice, lice, baby
- sockpuppets, on 04/23/2009, -0/+5Hey baby I got you some flowers and a bag of lice.
- DrSnugglebunny, on 04/23/2009, -2/+7It's not a hygiene hypothesis, it's a parasite hypothesis. Parasites, not dirt, stimulate the immune system most. See "Parasite Rex" by Carl Zimmer for a great read on this.
- anexanhume, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4For some, it was even right under their noses.
Others may have felt it in the pit of their beings.
And others are just plain crabby. - jennyvan, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4Nickname for Charlotte? Or not. I know a girl who named her daughter Charleigh. When pointed out that it's a boy's name she said the "leigh makes it a girls name" (*eyes rolling to back of head*)
It sort of make sense that many of our ailments/allergies are linked to going to extreme measures to avoid germs. I'm in the medical field. I'm aware of germs and practice good hand washing in my "everyday" life and work life, but I wouldn't call my self a germ phobe. I think a little bit of dirt is good for building immunity (in healthy people). That being said...I have to draw the line at carrying lice around. blech. - eliteX37, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3YES! OF COURSE! LICE IS THE ASTHMA CURE!!! THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE!!!
- byronm, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3I'm in the same boat. I grew up in houston playing in the "cricks" and riding our dirt bikes through the 10 foot high drainage systems that empty into those "Cricks" and i still get seasonal allergies and seasonal asthma. Built damns, ate dirt, threw dirt, stayed out from dusk to dawn getting absolutely disgustinly dirty and living on candy and junk and hell even bottles of forgotton booze along the train tracks from the hobos. I mean, when you think back on its amazing i lived and to think its what every young kid living in burbia houston did. we even hitched on trains to go from tomball all the way out to humble and get back before dinner and be all giggly about our adventures of filth
- lisaawesome, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3I never had an allergy to anything up until last summer. I have absolutely no idea what triggered it but now I have to take benadryl and pseudoephedrine every goddamn day or I'm miserable. It's started to warm up here and the allergies are just getting worse. I was just sitting here thinking about how I would love to be able to breathe normally. However I got lice as a kid once and I really don't think that option sounds any better.
- zip000, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3Charlotte, Charlene, and just plain Charlie. I went to college with a girl whose name was Charlie.
It isn't all that unusual. - charlie6969, on 04/23/2009, -1/+4As a person with 40 allergies and allergic asthma I have to say, WHAT??
I never had allergies in my life, until I had my kid. Immediately after her birth, I was allergic to freaking everything!
Anything they can do to help us is great, though. - byronm, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3I've done all of that and still have spring and fall allergies. I haven't been sick much in my life but i'm not sure that allergies work the same way as immune systems do or else my allergies should reduce over the years
- zip000, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure about the hyper-hygiene thing being a cause for allergies. I have fairly serious asthma and allergies - I've been hospitalized 3 times, and a few other trips to the emergency room - and my mother is not in the least hygienic. She was always a pitifully bad housekeeper and cook. I seriously doubt that I'm always wheezy (or at least I was until I got health insurance), because my childhood home was TOO clean.
That being said, I do think that they hyper-hygiene thing is an issue...just not the only issue. - jason210, on 04/23/2009, -2/+4I'd rather blow my nose.
- Lonandubh, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Ok, class, now say it with me, "Correlation is not causation"
- rotundo, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I grew up with a cleanfreak mom. Had allergies and got seriously sick (bronchitis, pneumonia) every winter growing up. Luckily no asthma.
Once I was on my own I stopped using antibacterial everything. I allowed myself to touch public handrails and stopped worrying about germs in general. I generally wash with just water unless I have a good reason to use soap (i.e. visible greasy dirt).
I am much, much healthier. Almost never get sick, and my allergies are greatly reduced. - foofightrs777, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2"Charlize"? as in charlize theron?
- 4degrees, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2@byronm allergies == bored immune system (in a nut shell)
if it spends enough time not fighting anything, it starts to kill you. - Ades, on 04/23/2009, -1/+3I cured my asthma with diet.. I stopped eating junkfood.. Stopped eating processed sugar.. No more candy and such.. Raw Vegetarian from now on..
- 4degrees, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2you're right, "real" cures can only come in the form of a nice colorful pressed shape, thats what all other organisms rely on. :-P
- thcobbs, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1somehow.... that's doubly appropriate when you think about the "artist"
- zip000, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1As someone who has had fairly severe allergies since I was a kid, I can empathize with you.
I can also say - Ha Ha in a Nelson Muntz voice.
Seriously though, allergies are horrible. - Fabbyfubz, on 04/23/2009, -2/+3The good news is I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico
- Antz0rz, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2Perscription Lice
- chrysrobyn, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2The biggest mistake any researcher can make is that correlation equals causation. Lice may be an indicator of a less healthy child because of more close-quarters exposure to more children. As such, they may get more sick, more often due to colds, flus, and other normal childhood diseases. I'd be more likely to believe the allergy connection was closer related to training the immune system what was the correct thing to fight -- "healthy" children who don't get lice or colds because they're kept away from other sick children may have immune systems that just get bored and start attacking dust.
There was a study last year that correlated bleach and caustic cleaners used during childhoods with asthma. This, I believe, would more directly speak to the "hygiene hypothesis" referred to in the article.
My children go outside in the dirt, we don't use bleach or any tough cleaners (non-antibacterial soaps only) and we let them get sick whenever their friends are. We don't give tylenol for every fever, only ones over 101F, and don't get antibiotics from the doctor for anything but the worst infection (my daughter had her first antibiotics for an ear infection just after her 4th birthday). - LucasHenderson, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2Your scalp now itches.
- Xaevier, on 04/23/2009, -3/+4Chance of death vs bugs on your head...ill take the asthma.
- Enterres, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Here's a more encompassing theory, and it's someone everyone should know, probably the most important thing about eating: whenever you eat cooked food your immune system will react.
Add to that all the artificial scents and smokes you may encounter during the day and it becomes understandable how one's immune system could over-react.
Maybe you could consider an all-raw vegan diet for a year or so? - KnightMareInc, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2I doubt the lice would always have to be in your head to get the proper immune response. That is if in fact lice helps.
- lisaawesome, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I used to say the same thing Lonewolf! Then one day last summer my eye swelled up and since then I've had allergies. It sucks. I'm really curious as to why I suddenly developed allergies after 22 years of being healthy and allergy free.
- charlietuna, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Do crab lice count? I mean I have a friend who wants to know. That's all. I swear.
- OffensivePrick, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I wish people could be banned for these kinds of useless comments...
- Enebreus, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2I read 'Parasite Rex' by Carl Zimmer a few years ago. In the book Zimmer says that allergies are often caused by our immune system going crazy because they can't find any parasites to fight.
A parasite free human is a rather recent invention. Think about it. Until a few decades ago everyone had some sort of creepy crawlies burrowing through their guts. These days though, nearly everyone in the first world is parasite free and our immune systems don't know what to do, so they attack pollen instead. - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2If we went back to using normal soaps instead of anti-bacterial and didn't freak out over a little dirt, we'd be much healthier. When my wife was living with her parents, her mom was a clean freak. Disinfecting everything, dusting and vacuuming with a HEPA vacuum cleaner every day, and a very expensive air purifier. My wifes allergies were insane. Since living with me, who only cleans things when they're dirty or dusty, her allergies have gotten much more manageable. The only things that set her off are other peoples pets and our guinea pigs.
- moothemagiccow, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Do you have some kind of mental deficiency?
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1I used to play Matchbox cars in clay mud, play football to the point of being covered in mud, swim in the local creek (that was reduced to a drain) and had pets since birth. My parents smoked and we had an open fire place that required me to cart wood, dirty wet wood.
loved it! Never been sick but two times when a flatmate's GF's child came down with turbo puke and I suspect a spider bite unnoticed made me feel like an old old man for 7 hours.
For the last 12 years I have lived and worked in the city and people around me had colds and flu. I never got it. - elboss18, on 04/24/2009, -0/+0to deacrease ur asthma u must decrease ur weight here a site for drug to loss of weight http://track.moreniche.com/hit.php?w=152535&s= ...
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+1I've heard this a lot and I think it's true. People I know who keep their houses too clean have kids with allergy problems. I think it's the chemicals. They also say pets are good for kids. So stop cleaning so much and get some animals in there!
- Lavarock, on 04/23/2009, -2/+2yep
