- vault, on 10/10/2007, -1/+44The portions in US restaurants are gigantic compared to other countries.
- jkbowman, on 10/10/2007, -7/+45Apathy (can't dismiss that), government subsidies that push corn syrup into almost everything for sale, and a dollar that stretches only far enough for many to make food choices like pasta, cheap meats, and bread.
What else do we expect? - They're feeding us like cattle. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24It's a good time to be alive when the biggest threat to our health is having too much food to eat.

Hmm... - happytron, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I don't care as long as I'm not fat.
- whereisian, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Shenanigans (for some of it). Who is feeding you? You are.
Legumes are cheap, low fat and healthy. Depending on where you are, many veggies and fruit are cheaper than most pre-processed foods. Eat less meat of a higher quality - 4oz (the correct amount) is too small, but 6 oz is a good serving if you're eating it with other foods. Eat the cheaper cuts (blade steak is cheap, lean and tasty when cooked properly). Eat starches in reasonable amounts. Eat what's in season. Drink water, not Coke. Experiment with seasonings to figure out what you like - healthy food doesn't have to taste like cardboard (Curry changed my life).
Pick up a copy of How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. It will save you money. - fortressgame, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19whats worse is people with fat kids and pets. Those creatures don't feed themselves. Yet these parents take no responsibility for creating their fat-ass family. "Oh we are just big-boned!" No, you are a fat ***** pig who eats far more than you should. I don't care if its corn syrup or tofu - you eat more calories than you burn, you cow.
- drake77, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16and who is surprised by this?
- novask, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15From my house to the gym theres are 2 Burger Kings, 2 Subways, 2 Mc Donalds and about 3-4 restaurants that I know about. My gym is about half a mile away. That should pretty much explain it.
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I don't know if anyone can relate, but in the past few years I've watched a ~lot~, I'd hate to say, the majority of my (skinny!) friends suddenly become very unhealthy and, well, fat. It's alarming when you realize what has happened so quickly. I'm only in my mid-20's, and friends who I thought would NEVER be overweight have achieved it in the past couple years.
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12yeah, i always feel terrible leaving food on my plate, but most places (especially steakhouses) give you enough to reasonably feed 2 people most of the time.
- Hetman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I agree 100% with you. I am 25 and I weigh more than I ever have. Its like this though I work in an office, I drink a lot of beer and eat out. I do not blame anyone but myself. It is just scary how it sneaks up on you.
- drake77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Why are we still using tax dollars to keep the price of corn syrup low?
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12This statement could be made of most developed nations (the UK as well).
- Racerx52, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Saw that too..
Who is this official? - DeskFlyer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Sigh....I feel so left out. :(
- Ahnteis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Take it home. :)
2 or 3 meals for the price of one! (And less cooking) - zohar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yea, us Europeans like to take our sweet time and enjoy our food.
- Ahnteis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm no fatty, but I should lose about 15 pounds to be at my ideal weight. I'm looking better and better thanks to the rest of you getting fat. Keep eating everyone, I need all the help I can get! :D
- Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8But you're WASTING TIME! You're not half as productive as you could be! By taking that long lunch, you're being greedy and STEALING from your employer! I suppose you're the type that also likes to go out for a drink after work instead going to the gym, scheduling a playdate for your child, balancing your checkbook, or doing something else productive! Communist!
- DracoFlameus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7If I say being fat is unhealthy, does that make me a fat hater? =p
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9If by 'shocking' you mean 'blatantly obvious' then yes, this is the most shocking thing since we discovered the sky was blue.
- Hetman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Its called personal responsibility. If people were not buying the food then there wouldn't be any of those fast food restaurants. Im a firm believer in personal choice. If you want to be fat be fat but do not blame it on anyone but yourself.
- nyx210, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9File this under: "No ***** Sherlock"
- DracoFlameus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Funny... I missed the invasion of Spain into the rest of Europe.. which apparently must have happened, otherwise pimpbot's comment would make no sense =p
- Hetman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Right now I do not care if my neighbor is obese. However if we were ever to get universal health care I would be angry. I do not want to pay for heart surgery for some fat asses that cannot exercise and eat right.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7STOOPID FAT PEOPLE RUINING AMERICA
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7what a coincidence... I'm fatter than ever too!
Granted I'm only 5'8" 145lbs - carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7just sucks to see things like car seats getting so big they feel like a couch. it's nice in the movies to have the extra room though.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13It's because we're so rich that no one ever misses a meal.
- devjunkie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's kind of a silly statement.. once you don't eat crappy food for a while and eat nothing but healthy stuff, fruits and veggies, chicken, and things without all the butter and crap on it, you'll notice that ***** food makes you feel horrible.
You'll actually grow to appreciate how lettuce and fruit and crap make you feel once you re-adjust your diet.
Not to say you gotta be a health nut or anything, but if you hate fruits and veggies that much ,something is wrong. - mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6i'm goin to burger king, then to pick up some pixy sticks, anyone want anything?
- noblepaladin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Tomorrow, this story will be true again. The worst part is that people don't seem to care and they keep getting fatter and fatter.
- lopla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I just don't get it! I continue to expand at a rapid rate and am about to hit 400lbs. I have reduced my sugar intake by 70% and replaced the 70% with Splenda. I now only drink Splenda based sodas and only eat Splenda based snack foods. Splenda is supposed to be healthy! I also only eat fried foods fried in Olestra. The Olestra has not taken too well though as I am now experiencing the side effects of anal leakage. I will persevere though surely my weight will start to decrease? I don't know what to do!!!
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The fatties make health care so ***** expensive in this country (including your tax dollars paying for medicare, etc.). The more fatties in this country, the more expensive medical care for /you/ becomes.
I for one am doing my part to fight this. I run 2 miles, 5 times a week; I lift weights 5 times a week; I eat healthily. I don't want to contribute to the fattitude of America. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's ok, the UK and Germany are quickly catching up to us. Pretty soon all of Europe will be just as fat.
- Litespeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Sometimes. I make my own pizzas from scratch (including the bases) and it works out to about $5 per pizza. You'd be paying double that from somewhere like Pizza Hut. And mine are far fresher and healthier.
- surfcat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with MSG when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates; causing rats (and humans?) to become obese. They even have a title for the fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats".
I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and the fridge. MSG was in everything: The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavoured potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones.
The items that didn't have MSG marked on the product label had something called ''Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein'', which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate."

I refuse to be a manipulated lab RAT - JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yup, we've gotten fatter. And sorry Europe, we're send more McDonalds over there so you're gonna follow us right along! :-)
- afflusso, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Because if we have universal healthcare, I will have to pay for all of his medical bills, surgeries, etc.
- dvsbastard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Coincidentally a popular local radio station over here in Australia, who have been recently been broadcasting from Vegas (for some unrelated promotion) were actually discussing how ridiculously large and unhealthy American food servings over the last few days... Some of the calls they took and stories they told made me sick (and I am by far no health freak)...
No offense, but when it comes to obesity, and health, you have become the laughing stock of the world! - mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5and when it comes to accents, you have become the laughing stock! of the U.S.!
damn :( - KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The worst part is that they are setting their kids up for child-onset diabetes, with which obese children often become afflicted.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Vegetables, turkey, fruits, rice, chicken. I bought 90% of these things from Henry's and lived on a food budget of 50 dollars per month in college. The number one cause for people being fat is lack of commitment.
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This has a kernel of truth to it. My girlfriend in med school is always telling me to eat more slowly. If you eat more slowly, your body has time to react to the new food in your stomach. You'll eat less, because you'll realize you're full before you eat it all. If you eat fast, you'll overeat and not realize it until after it's all in your stomach.
Or, at least, that's the law student's summary of what he understand's from his med school gf. - Treason, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But you own a computer and on Digg? Riight....
- DracoFlameus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Only because European Union is not counted as one country :D
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5In many areas of the US (think suburbs), the road structure is designed to favor cars, not pedestrians. An otherwise short trip becomes unwalkable due to car centric neighborhood planning. Not good when oil hits new highs.
New York City on the other hand is very walkable. - dle5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you really wanted to contribute, you would capture a fatty and force him to run with you.
*whip* move it wide load! - Litespeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How do you get to the the gym?
