- everfresh59, on 04/09/2008, -0/+10DAMN RIGHT IT DOES!!!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HEGwPgri1Pk - MeatyDoughnut, on 04/09/2008, -4/+14Steroids give me self-esteem.
- dukeochutney, on 04/09/2008, -1/+10i dont know but most yoga chicks are mad hot and can bend in ways you never though possible.
- adjustafresh, on 04/09/2008, -0/+7going to assume yes... kind of a leading question. Someday, would love to see a title like that and the content of the article be: "Nope"
- shawnanigans, on 04/09/2008, -2/+9Should I report you as offensive for your comments? No, but I probably should for naming yourself after a keyboard. Seriously, is that the best you could come up with? Even CumRefinery2887 is better.
- SocialPoison, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5And the punk as we have it in NA isn't real punk. And our pizza isn't real pizza. And our viagra isn't real viagra. Who the hell cares?
- jj101, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5RTA. The answer is that in the study referenced by the article simply walking was significantly better than yoga across the board. There were caveats in the final paragraph and the gist was any exercise is good.
Happy Someday - do you love it? - LogitechG15, on 04/09/2008, -6/+10No, I do not believe Yoga is better than any other exercise for boosting self esteem. When I come back from my morning run (I will probably get dugg down, because "diggers are fat and lazy") the release of all those endorphins is like a high for the rest of the day. Consequently, my self esteem is much high as well, since I feel great.
- greenlight2001, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5I use cocaine for instant self-esteem and courage!
- MortalynFlux, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4If you do yoga to boost your self-esteem, you are missing the point. Yoga varies greatly from teacher to teacher, and from practice to practice. Some are exercise-oriented, some are more religion-oriented. The more spiritually-oriented classes focus on releasing the ego. "Self-esteem" is a western invention.
This whole article is framed incorrectly. They should instead ask, what combination of activities can improve your overall wellness? No single activity can do that. - ChairShot83, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4Yoga Fire boosts my self esteem... And leaves the other guy burned in the process...
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3but you're less likely to be injured from the running if you practice yoga...
- WiretapStudios, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4My g/f is a yoga chick...I can vouch for the previous comment.
- MaTT2011, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Raw Stem Cells straight from the fetus is how i put some pep in my step!
Works great! - Peko, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2fatties can't handle anything right away, besides a cheeseburger.
- Supurcell, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Yoga fire!
- martynda, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Yep... because by the time you're done sticking your spandex-clad ass in the air in front of strangers, chances are, you won't be embarrassed about much at all.
- LogicBomB, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't this really depend on the person? I'd feel very self conscious about yoga but I really feel alive after lifting some dumbells for half an hour.
- 3tcp, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3All credit goes to the super-flexible young women classmates
- credence, on 04/09/2008, -2/+4Ditto, though I'm more for weight lifting myself.
- johnpaul191, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I used to go to yoga classes, I have run a few marathons (still a runner) and have been rowing off and on for almost 20 years. I stopped going to yoga simply because the classes stopped where i was going, and i never found another place to go. I still do some on my own. After getting into the swing of just weekly yoga classes, and doing it almost daily on my own i would say i felt great in a different way then after a good row or run. I'm guessing it was the stretching in ways i never knew to do, and that helped my rowing and running a lot.
For those that can't be bothered to RTFA, it's kind of inconclusive comparing it to other exercise... so i don't know why this is on the front page of Digg. I would suggest trying yoga to anyone considering it. I don't know if you will get the full effect after one class, but you'll still feel great. Most places have some sort of free trial guest passes. - inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2there are as many different flavors of yoga as there are teachers, and I'd bet at least 3/4 of the teachers out there do a pretty half-assed job. a super-gentle class for older women isn't likely to bring about a whole lot of changes. doing astanga will make you a panther, and you'll be so balanced in yourself you'll be well past little ego questions like self-esteem.
- Rambeezle, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2yoga snob!
- laserblazer, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2If you can go three minutes on a heavy bag and do ninety minutes of yoga, you're a badass.
- Coffeedemon, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3Maybe someone with no imagination who happened to look downwards when they were choosing their username.
"diggers are fat and lazy"
"Consequently, my self esteem is much high as well, since I feel great."
Putting down a faceless mass of people usually makes me feel better about myself too. - XombieRobot, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2This article is does not provide a good example for the majority of people. Only slightly obese women. Yes, America is largely obese but most people are not. Well, maybe in the South, but not everywhere else.
They are also losing less wieght doing yoga than walking because it is a low intensity form of yoga. Bikram yoga, which uses a heated room, can produce faster results than walking. The workout burns from 500-700 calories. But fatties can't handle this right away. - sonstone, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1You should give it a try. I do the bikram yoga about every other day and I was very self conscious when I first started. My flexibility is awful. Once in the class, you realize that noone is paying attention to you as it takes everything in you to stay focused on what you are doing.
- KingGorilla, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1What about sex?
- sonstone, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Oh man, you obviously have never done an intense Yoga workout.
- LogitechG15, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I wasn't putting down Diggers, I'm just saying the stereotype that we often receive.
- johnpaul191, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1One bad side effect of people that just do strength training is losing flexibility. If you are doing cardio like running, yoga will teach you stretches you never knew existed. Hell, Runners World often has a few yoga stretches that runners should know. I never go out on a run, or row, without some stretches i learned in yoga classes.
- Jawoodyablowme, on 04/09/2008, -1/+2When a hot yoga instructor gives you an "adjustment" (it involves them pushing their pelvis into your rear and puting her hands on your hips with her fingers getting a bit close to mister willy.) you think about sex and really want it. Or, maybe she was making a pass at me - she was a hot 40 something - Hmmm.
- DesdinovaEL, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1The content of this article is "Nope" Lol
- sonstone, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Not to mention the wide range of Yoga styles.
- robbob, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I've been watching Yogi for years and it makes me smile :)
- AlKo, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1This article talks only about women and compares yoga with walking and running. *sigh*
What about the multitude other exercise activities available to the college sample? Ballroom dance is another trend as is spinning, aerobics, or pilates. - heidiwarren, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Any exercise makes me feel better about myself, but Yoga in particular makes me feel like the world is mine for the taking...knowing I can hold my own body weight on the back of my arms (Crow Pose) makes me feel like a bad-ass. And there is ALWAYS someone worse off than you, plus although you might be self-conscious, remember that everyone feels that way in the beginning, and everyone is so consumed with their own poses, they are not looking at you anyway.
- Jawoodyablowme, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Yoga is great for stretching and meditation. And if you do the power type of stuff, it's also good for some strength training. But it's not an end all. Seane Corn even had to put some cardio (machines) into her routine - and she yoga as a profession!
Yoga is a great pick me up in the morning! I'm trying to cut back on my caffeine and since doing yoga in the morning I'm sown to only one pot of tea. - shivaaa, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1THis research was done with clinically obese women!!! Bad research, bad methods, garbage science.
Cameron Diaz and her yoga friends already have plenty of "self esteem", however you quantify that silliness. - Peko, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I think the salient point is: Do what works for you.
The biggest obstacle to health is compliance. I don't know the exact stats, but a lot of people give up and don't stick with a program, even if they start one. So if people get their yayas doing yoga, that's good enough for me.
If you wanna get all "My cardio-strength-pillatobics-circuit-boxing is better than your program" form a line to the left of I don't give a *****. The big picture is that a large proportion of westerners are not active enough. - sizzla, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1If your going do to do yoga do the real thing and not yoga for grannies. Athletic yoga combined with other activities (running, rock climbing, skiing, biking, etc...) is the best way to go. Yoga counteracts the the contraction and tightness of muscles that one picks up in other sports. Also you get the most benefits from yoga after doing a vigorous cardio workout. Muscles are warmed up and supple and capable of more movement.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3It depends on who duggs the story. It's a common phenomenon these days. The phenomenon is not a story getting onto front page with 30+ diggs but morons like you asking how did this get to the front page with x digs and y comments.
- bowe, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1That's the Number 1 reason to try yoga.
- HalfGiraffe, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Yoga is wonderful for my self esteem. Watching fat chicks in leotards try to stand on their heads always makes me feel better about my own body.
- sonstone, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1There are cardiovascular forms of yoga.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1there is a hidden benefit to yoga which is very powerful - when you get into those positions blood flow is increased to the endocrine glands making them work more efficiently - for example the pose called the plough where you have your weight on your shoulders and you legs and feet behind your head brings blood flow to the thyroid gland - yoga is more than the sum of the parts used in this article's comparison -
- shimmyNshake, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3Yoga = The placebo pill of exercise
- Rambeezle, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1*munch munch
