- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+181I hate you. I want a steam room. I hope you die, and I get your steam room.
With love,
OmegaNine - NoLeafClover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51"only shave with hot water"....? Are you crazy? I would jack my face up if I did that. That can only come from a person who has one of those 14 year old just growing in sort of facial hair. My suggestion, as some have mentioned, is right after the shower, do not dry your face, and apply the following:
A lotion with no alcohol (dry face = lots of little bits of tissue paper), and Coochie Creame. Or Kitty Creme. It's shaving cream meant for a ladies Hoo Hoo, and since that area can get sensitive, I figure, what's good enough for a bald floor is good enough for me. It's essentially super lubricated conditioners that reduce friction which creates much less pull when the blade runs across your face. And as an added bonus you smell like a stripper and have a great story to tell your boys. - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44I can't get a smooth shave unless I start with a pass with the grain, then against it, then horizontally. And even then I have a 5 o'clock shadow when I'm done.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47cause then you'd slit your throat.
- hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41motorola one
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28"Against the grain. After a hot shower. Water only. NO SHAVING CREAM EVER!
Keeps your face as smooth as a baby's butt."
Yikes. You must have thin hair. If I tried to shave against the grain with nothing but water, I'd dull the razor before I was even done shaving. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Same here. While I'd love to be able to make one pass on my face, I have to go up, down, left, right, etc, to get it all. And that's using one of the 5 razor blades.
- slickriven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23"Change the blade somewhere between every two and every seven shaves, depending on the toughness of your beard" - Shoot these guys must work for razor companies, I generally keep a razor for like a month or longer, shaving every time my woman bugs me - like every third day... With the cost of the Fusion and what I use, the Mach3, changing blades nearly every week would be financial suicide.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Do you tend to get ingrown hairs? If so, with the grain. If not, however you want. Some guys think that the occasional pimple is just that, a pimple, when its actually a little ingrown hair action...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I shave in the steam room or sauna daily, and shaving against the grain makes it flawlessly smooth for me
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Not if you're 12 I guess. Check back in a few years.

Dugg for use of the phrase "Ladies Hoo Hoo". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The best "how to" shaving link I've found:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6886845/ - jlowe64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16The Fab Five™ say with the grain. I assume they know how to take care of skin, so I do what they say.
- Truegod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14FTA: "Professional barbers, by the way, usually first shave with the grain, and then re-shave going sideways."
- alf86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I like to shave in the shower for the same reason. The hair is softened and the pores open up nicely. I can use regular soap to lubricate, and I almost never get cut.
- gonpost, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19What about shaving sideways...
Just an idea, not sure if it's any worse/better. - emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13As a black man, shaving against the grain is a sin. It will cause ingrown hairs and they will cause razor bumps that last for a long time.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+10headzoo, I have the same problem. I'm using one of those Gillette Fusion razors...but I guess the problem is that my facial hair grows in many directions. And the hair on the right side of my face grows thicker then my left. It's pretty annoying.
- jstevewhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@shad0w
Of course there is a grain 'down there'. Look closer. :D - av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9My razors have longer usability when I shave against. Shaving with the grain only works for me when the blade is near brand new.
- Nar1117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nope, always avoid shaving against the grain. The best way to get that close of a shave is to first shave with the grain, then across it (90 degree) one way, then across is the other way.
And yes, the best razor to use is a saftey razor, and if youre a purist, the Germans usually make the best blades.
And whoever linked to The Art of Shaving knows their stuff. I reccomend that every male get their beard shaven at Truffit and Hill, just to see how a professional, classic shave feels. Also, if you so desire, you can get a shaving lesson with one of the barbers, they know their stuff. - TheNakedChef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I hated shaving before, I would get lots of ingrown hair on my neck and I would shave once every week at most. Most of the time I would just use clippers to remove the hair.
After reading lots of articles on shaving and especially badger and blade forums I got myself a good razor Merkur HD is perfect for beginners, a good brush, in my case Vulifix #2234, but most of you guys from USA can go to C&E and get a much cheaper brush from them which is very good. Since I'm from australia it's not an option. Get some good cream in my case taylors avocado, that stuff smells so good as well.
As for blades go to ebay and get yourself a 100 or 200pack of Derby Extra razors blades. This will last for years and are only around $20.
This days I shave practily every day and love it. - razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9When you shave with a Mach3 theres no time to think
you think your dead. - dezmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Any one else ever try to wipe the blade clean with your finger? lol, not fun
- freeagent99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If you have a coarse beard don't even attempt to shave against the grain. You've been warned!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I just comb the maggots out of my beard now and then. Shaving takes too much time away from WoW and then there's all the money I could spend on time cards instead of razors.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's why you don't have to be picky about your razors: you have thin hair. For most other men in the world, there's a little more to it. A quality cartridge razor is far superior to a cheap disposable, and a safety razor is far superior to a cartridge razor. If you shave with disposables, and get a clean, comfortable shave, keep on shaving like that. If not, time to think about which macho imagery you want to go with.
- foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm white but have rather thick hair so I end up with the same problem.
- jewdiknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I buy the cheap Bic one, but I buy it in a bulk pack at Costco. I use one blade a week and toss it out. Its only like $25 for a 50 pack, so it last me a whole year and since each razor is super sharp for the first few uses, it feels the same as the super razors that come with the sunday paper.
- jwigum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm really surprised nobody mentions Styptic pencils(but nobody ever cuts themselves...). Forget dabs of tissue, these things rock. Instantly stop bleeding, and the cut is hardly noticeable at all.
They sting a little, but I'd much rather deal with a moment of discomfort than having to walk around with a scab.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styptic - RandyF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Everyone needs to go to http://www.classicshaving.com and buy a good safety razor. One damn good blade beats 4 or 5 blades any day of the week.
... and at under $5 for a pack of 10 (very good) blades, it's hard to beat the economics.
(I do what the arti says: with, then across the grain) - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Why would I want to shave? It's like a blanket for my face:) I might have to bookmark this article for when springtime comes again, just in case I've forgotten how by then...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The otters crush the bearded clam with their tummies!
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I didn't start getting a more noticeable 5 o'clock shadow until I started shaving against the grain, I now wish I hadn't in the first place. I would get somewhat of a shadow after shaving, so I decided to try against the grain. It was all well and smooth for a couple of weeks but after that it just started coming in darker and more coarse. I'm thinking about going with a straight razor, this guy at my work shaves his head with one and his head looks smooth as a bowling ball.
- pin0chet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A very interesting article, indeed. I'd never before heard of a "Badger Hair Shaving Brush" but it sounds interesting. The author's obsession with shaving and shaving-related products seems a bit.. odd? excessive? eccentric? i'm not sure of the proper way to describe this article, abound with statements such as:
"If you’ve never lathered up in the morning with a fine English shaving cream that smells like fresh-cut violets, limes, or lavender, then you are truly missing out on one the great manly pleasures of all time." - cronos916, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7alrighty, let me bring you all to the light.
http://www.theartofshaving.com/taos/intro.php
Check out the site, not for the products but for the techniques. - TheNakedChef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm white too, i've curly hair and it's a big problem for me as well.
- TheNakedChef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@pin0chet
Once you start shaving the way he describes, you'll know exactly what he talks about. It's a great article and it was posted here few months ago, since I've started shaving that way I'll never go back to Mach 3. - PunkHop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My technique goes a little something like this:
Up, Down, Left, Right, Hold A + Start
Anyone? Anyone? Original Sonic? - jasonsbytes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I always shave with the grain, and sometimes perpendicular to it, but never against it....
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah shaving with the grain With a less sharp blade just yanks the hell out of my whiskers!
- jdivis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@skoles
People can save their head hair after a cut for cancer patients, I wish guys with 5 o'clock shadows could grow a beard, and cut it for poor guys like me that can't grow facial hair. - dissident, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F5u28JfnCM
- swimanubis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4don't use gilette. learn2shave properly with good shaving cream, horsehair brush, and a safety straight razor.
think about it. how does a professional barber give a shave? you can have pretty much the same experience at home without spending too much on equipment. and for those who have never had a professional barber shave ... I pity you. - jimmy66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been using a Mach 3 for 10-12 years, and always shave against the grain. I like the Gillette Power razor too, but damn the blades are pricey!
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Chuck Norris just demands the folicles release the hair, and he does not ask twice. Ever.
- wbgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's probably worth pointing out, if anyone is thinking of using a cutthroat razor, that they're ever so slightly bent and therefore only useable by right-handers. I spent weeks cutting the hell out of my face until I noticed this and threw the thing in the bin.
