- adml_shake, on 01/08/2009, -0/+16As a type 1 diabetic a cheaper way to get insulan is welcome news. I already spend a small fortune every month for the three types that I have to take multiple times a day.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| - souljaboytellem, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6Hmmm...hope they do a follow up report on side-effects or any bad sides to this, because if not, this is very good news for diabetics
- wendelgee2, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6Amateur insulin just wings it.
- mrtasses, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Most insulin dependent diabetics have something complex going on. It's not just that they don't have the gene for insulin, it's that their body is recognizing the insulin producing cells as foreign/infection and so their own immune system has killed them (Type I). Or that their body is producing what should be sufficient insulin but their body doesn't handle the signal properly (Type II).
- TheManikin, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Are you ***** high?
- SneakyPhil, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4***** off you fat bastard.
- kuantan97, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Rest assured, as a Type I diabetic (that would be real diabetes as opposed to Type II "diabetes") myself, I have full faith in the federal government to somehow regulate and cartelize production of this innovation in order to maintain arificially higher prices.
- Locke21, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I think the idea is that the plants would produce significantly more more insulin. You should have just claimed it was a joke. You just look dumb now.
- godofallcows, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- souljaboytellem, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4"Most insulin products are produced by bacteria in a fermenter. As this is an expensive process, Sembiosys hopes using plants will be cheaper because they do not need this stage. "
Right in the title - wendelgee2, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3high on your own farts.
- seaofcheese, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Correct me if i am wrong but dont they also get insulin from pigs?
- fapfaptrain, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4Only good things come from Canada, like maple syrup, mounties, hockey, insulin, Rush, etc.
- BossKey, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I read the headline as "Insulin grown in pants..." ...I need more coffee.
- Opiate, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3It's a bit more complicated then that, diabetes effectively destroys your pancreas, your immune system attacks it and kills the beta cells, it would have to be some hard core stem cell ***** or transplant. That being said I don't expect to see it in my lifetime, but improved drugs is always nice as they can be pretty expensive and generally annoying to take (type 1 here).
- EnergyEinstein, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2It would be good if a government could fund research into this.. true.
- Trigonometron, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2All we need is more insulin.
- kittymeow, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3You can't take insulin orally no matter where it is from. Proteins are digested when they hit your stomach. You inject it so that it actually makes it into your blood stream without getting chewed up by your stomach.
- EnergyEinstein, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2I had read about this when researchers first successfully grew insulin in the plant. The idea then though was different, that the plant could be ground up and taken orally? At least that was my understanding, maybe just was my own thought.. If I needed to take needles every day I'm sure I'd much rather down a bunch of pills throughout the day.
- yoshman, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2@Solafein
But we get the glucose meter for free! Such a deal! - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3Pro-insulin is a single stranded protein, which is bound to itself by two disulfide bridges. The curved end must then be cleaved off, to achieve two protein strands, still bound by those two bridges.
- lusenok2, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Damn, that's wrong.
As concerns costs - the major expense of protein manufacturing process arises from its purification. Yeast can be engineered to give very high output of insulin very fast (read: less by-products). No plant can do that.
And liquid handling (in yeast fermenters) is usually easier (read: cheaper) than moving and collecting all that grass. - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Yes thats a wonderful news for millions of patients.
- NoQuarter, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Patients aren't started on pig (or cow) insulin any more, but some older diabetics who have always used animal insulin are still using it.
- noumuon, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3wow you're dense.
- Paranor01, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Don't forget pacemakers, the space shuttle/ISS robot arms, Avero Aero, and was the place the Alexander Graham Bell came to think and tinker (among many other things).
- ebcreasoner, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Hello Mr. Brimley.
- Fleagleman, on 01/08/2009, -2/+4Wow. Imagine that. Drugs from plants that have medicinal purposes.
We must make that illegal immediately! - Opiate, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2No doubt, it's a double edged sword.. I still think free market is a better way to progress, I would probably be dead without drug companies or I'd still be on older style insulin (slower) with much more restrictive eating and poor sugar management or if some hardcore socialised nation had their way I would simply be culled for the greater good. These progresses only make life better in the end, money is the least of the worry it's relatively cheap.
- Solafein, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Of course. And pharmaceutical companies will continue price gouging on the test strips, which are just as freaking expensive as the insulin itself.
Ah well. Maybe at least this is a step in the right direction of finding a cure for Type I's - something I'm quite confident would already be known if only this disease wasn't an enormous moneymaker.
Type II I'd hardly consider a "disease." - k3rfuffl3, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2It is possible to make a time release capsule which releases insulin with a change in pH that's created after exiting the stomach and I believe they are researching this already.
- diabetic, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Although the majority of diabetics suffer from type 2 diabetes, there is still a large demand for insulin. Type 2 diabetes, the more common form of the disease does not require insulin injections. However, those that are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes have to cope with injecting insulin every day. These constant injections can be a real financial burden on many families that depend on insulin on a daily basis. I think that any efforts to produce insulin in large amounts and with a lower cost are commendable.
- CrazedLeper, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Can we test it on you?
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Insulin from plants? HAX!
- peteyb1313, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2Buried for user name.
- narayansitar, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I think this is a great solution, because it is possible for the plant insulin to generate the necessary hormone secretions for the pancreas to start naturally balancing itself
- svendm, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2Buried for the idiotic last sentence. If it's so easy, why don't YOU do it, you arrogant fool.
Realize this:
- We don't fully know how the human body works
- Even if we did, we still don't fully know what's wrong, in almost all diseases.
- Even if we did, it doesn't mean you know how to fix it
- Even if you had an idea of how to fix it, it doesn't mean it's practical, safe, non-toxic, etc.
How many concept-stage drugs do you think make it to market? It's not even one-in-ten-thousand.
And yet you're indulging in the fantasy that drug companies have the luxury to pick and choose between treatments and cures for profitability motives?! Get real! They're lucky enough to find something that _works_ and can't afford to leave any stones unturned trying to do so.
It's doubly ignorant in this case, because insulin is a generic, non-patented substance. There are no large profits to be had from producing insulin. - eviljolly, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2If this was intended as a joke, bravo, otherwise...I just don't know what to think...
- mrtasses, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2This story could only have been less informative if it was scrolling across the bottom of CNN.
"Most insulin products are produced by bacteria in a fermenter. As this is an expensive process, Sembiosys hopes using plants will be cheaper because they do not need this stage." That doesn't even make sense. Of course it doesn't "go through this stage", it's a completely different source. Why is a plant cheaper than a fermentor? Isn't the extraction process from a plant more intensive than the extraction from a bacterial broth where the protein is likely being release into solution? What is the process of turning the pro-hormone into the hormone (thanks previous commenter), and how are those enzymes produced? - ,,|,_, on 01/08/2009, -2/+2You're right. They'd have to figure out a way to regulate insulin production too. I still think that companies are more focused on treatment than a cure because it's guaranteed income for life (yours, not theirs)
- BossKey, on 01/08/2009, -1/+1Why would you want to hurt the Iraqis? Bush liberated them, gave them democracy, and now they have control of our troops in their country. Heck, they're just like another state of the Union at this point!
- deric2001, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1Interesting but I have Diabetes and i am a mother of three a career woman and wife. I dont have a lot of time to organize my meals so I bought www.youstripfat.com and now my diabetes is under control. It allows me to build a customized diet plan based off of what foods i enjoy and my goals. The program generate daily meal plans as well as a shopping guide - it's like having a nutritionist at home.
- kittymeow, on 01/08/2009, -2/+1They used to but then they realized it's really expensive and stupid because you have to spend time and energy grinding up a pig pancreas or something and you don't get too much insulin from that. When bacterial technology was developed to became obvious it was cheaper, faster and less wasteful. I would put a plant source as somewhere better than a pig, but worse than bacteria.
- lisalyn, on 01/08/2009, -2/+1Yes. There is animal and human insulin available. Every person is different though, and depending on what type of diabetes you have, your doctor may suggest taking the animal insulin or the human. I think they are producing less of the animal insulin now too. I got type 1 diabetes in 1988 and I have never used the pig insulin, but it does exist.
