- vsaint, on 05/22/2009, -2/+24My penis begins a recession after i splurge.
- sodade, on 05/22/2009, -0/+21If buying consumer crap cheers you up, you have a serious ***** problem.
- pathouston22, on 05/22/2009, -1/+20Here is a life lesson:
Never give a woman your credit card. - felman87, on 05/22/2009, -8/+26In times of recession, I tend to splurge on women.
- Testies, on 05/22/2009, -0/+14In immortal words of Norm from Cheers:
Women, cant live with them....pass the beer nuts. - inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+10Some CC companies raise your credit limit for your purchases and then charge you a hefty fee for the "service". Be careful.
- chipxsd, on 05/22/2009, -0/+7I just did today :( but I haven't told her, it's maxed out
- mxxz, on 05/22/2009, -1/+8Can't live with them, cant have sex... I mean live without them
- Hillsfar, on 05/21/2009, -1/+8"...79 percent of them [women] said they would splurge to cheer themselves up." Also from the article, however: "A 2006 study in the United States found 6 percent of women have it so bad they are labeled compulsive buyers, but so are 5.5 percent of men." It's not that big a difference then.
In recessions, people may splurge, but their splurges tend to be more limited. Purchases of lipstick instead of a pedicure. Purchases of chocolate instead of a fancy dinner. That's why those companies are doing better, while other discretionary spending is down. You could also quote other statistics that show that men tend to over-estimate their incomes and underestimate their debts. Overall, both men and women tighten their belts during a recession. - mongo25, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6Talking a woman into buying ***** is about as difficult as tying a shoe lace... so congrats.
- Leezus, on 05/22/2009, -2/+7You're God Damn right, Larry.
- ashmist, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6All this talk of Splurging has me feeling oddly aroused
- FishHammer, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5Economy's tanking, husband may lose his job, so BUY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ON HIS CREDIT CARD BEFORE IT HAPPENS.
- m3arvk, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5Shows you how closely women naturally lean towards neurotic behavior.
/take that women :-) - diggerpleez, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4With my wife, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
- beesaretasty, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4Their excellent driving more than makes up for it.
I kid! - mojoe1185, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Its like a natural negative feedback system, right?
You're right, it isn't. - Fozefy, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3You don't know women all that well then, you'd be hard pressed to find 1 in 10 that wouldn't admit to this.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Rockarollr- LOL! It's amazing someone can assume so much about another person by what they read in two simple posts. Unlike most marriages, my husband makes the decision of when and how we vacation. He makes the decision of when and where to look for work. If my husband had said no vacation and he was no longer looking for work, that's how things would have gone. I must have gotten spoiled all those years of putting him through college (three colllege degrees and one professional diploma at last count), working at factory and office jobs I hated in a bad economy so he could follow his dreams. If anyone deserves a vacation, it's my husband who put in 80 hour work weeks once he did get a job. He could have cancelled the vacation, but thankfully he didn't. It was the most restful time he had had in a very long time.
- Rockarollr, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4"You assumed he didn't actively look for work while we were on vacation. Of course while we were there he was conversing with people who were looking to hire, updated his resume and scheduled interviews for when we returned a few days later."
-- Umm...Exactly *WHO* was this a vacation for again? You call it a "family vacation". Your husband was having to do tasks that are more mundane, boring and stressful than getting up and going to work every day. Trust me when I say that it couldn't have been much of a vacation for him.
Honestly, it just sounds like you had already decided in your mind that *YOU* were going to get *YOUR* vacation no matter what. I'd be willing to bet that *YOU* enjoyed yourself while he worked his ass off to make sure everything was going to be okay when you two got back home. That's no vacation. Not for him anyway.
You're just presenting yourself as a shining example of the argument presented in the article's title. It's ironic that you tried to argue the validity of your decision to splurge on a vacation when most reasonable people would make an attempt to cut their losses (rooms already reserved for a cheap rate) and save as much as possible, considering the circumstances.
Spoiled rotten you are, my dear. - robosexy, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4Life lesson: get separate credit cards.
- cosmochao, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Classic case of escapism--similar to drugs, addictive foods and traveling to far away places. Even those not impacted personally by the recession are looking for ways to escape just from the stress of hearing about it all! Very interesting study for marketers or those in business when positioning your product in the market during recession. If you can offer your product/service as an escape, you will do well.
- foofightrs777, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4And if he didn't get a job? Then you lose your home/apt. and are living on the street. I know a ton of employers that are just dying to sign up transient individuals with no permanent address. If you didn't go on vacation and it came to months of unemployment you could have at least held out longer while the main bread winner looked for a well-paying job. Meanwhile the partner who earned less could have picked up some job just so there's some income. And if he did get a job, then hell you use that money and go on vacation. Pretty simple when you take a long view and aren't acting like a Veruca Salt in an instant gratification society.
So in short, it may have worked out for you but that doesn't change the fact the what you two did was retarded and you shouldn't be presenting it like it was a good idea. - foofightrs777, on 05/22/2009, -1/+3It's also pretty ***** up when you think about the anxiety, stress, and potential insolvency you cause to these well-meaning but weak-willed individuals. Also, I'm sure your store loves the return rate after people have time to reflect on their purchases.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I wonder if it stops them from going to the pub every day and having 3 pints for lunch.
- gdha, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I see nothing wrong with this!! Okay, maybe a little bit of an addiction!
- tmparlato, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2more bad publicity. ::sigh:: some of us are logical, i swear.
- m3arvk, on 05/22/2009, -2/+4Yes.
- Princeamor, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Are the logical ones lesbians?
- frugaldiva, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1I wish I could afford that luxury!
- ryancawdor, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2I was commenting about the article and you broadened it to cover all heinous acts. Why? Do you believe that rational thought with regards to money is equal among gender? Do you disagree with the survey?
- mparker21311, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2And I'm more willing to get drunk every night.
- kocurejd, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2I prefer Rube from Major League 2:
:Women...Can't live with 'em, and they can't pee standing up." - aaronjason8992, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2lol
- Yage2006, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Quick spend the money before it isn't worth anything !!!!!!
- LaurenCC, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2There's a recession?
- smilingcandle, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1Psychological term for it is 'reactance'.
- Icyfenix, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1Women tend to spend more on shopping, but men buy consumables(beer, strippers) when depressed. This is just a survey about women, there is nothing stated in the article about men, men's habits when depressed, the questions they asked about the actual financial toll these trips took, the size and severity of the trips-
It may be in the experiment but not the article, and the data honestly doesn't point to the conclusions you have drawn with any reliability- you'll have to defend them better with actual data and not incidental means.
Yay for peer review. - 4321234, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1Unless it's something practical. Like a go-kart.
- Bethi, on 05/22/2009, -2/+2this is quite true, but not at the scale that I mean :P getting 500 bucks from someone who intended to spend 50 is an art form
- SpruceCaboose, on 05/22/2009, -4/+4I thought the world was run by the men's wives?
But you are right, there is no equality in rational thought. I mean, I turn on any news network in any city at any time of the night, and you know who I see doing the dumbest and most heinous things almost exclusively? Men.
Oh wait....could it be that both sexes have their own quirks in sensibilities, and that humans in general are not terribly rational? - holyskeleton, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1you never know what they gonna do if you let them out of the kitchen
- Jashobeam5, on 05/22/2009, -2/+1foofightsrs- You assumed he didn't actively look for work while we were on vacation. Of course while we were there he was conversing with people who were looking to hire, updated his resume and scheduled interviews for when we returned a few days later. I don't know about where you work, but at many jobs you have to work a year before you get a week off for vacation. We had already paid for the rooms at a deep discount (non-refundable), so food and gas were all we had to pay for while gone. Going on such a cheap vacation would not have meant being homeless when we returned. In our situations it was a very good idea to take a small, cheap family vacation while we could.
- sjbdallas, on 05/21/2009, -9/+8Bitch
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -2/+1I wish British women would have spending sprees for their teeth.
Dentists in England are constantly in a recession. - Bethi, on 05/22/2009, -3/+0I admit to being one of these women they speak of, and I also work in retail sales and am damn good at my job so I'm responsible for talking women into buying ***** too! mwhahahahaha
- ryancawdor, on 05/22/2009, -9/+6A sweeping generalization, sure, but at its core this is the reason why the world is run by men. Rational thought is not equal among gender.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/22/2009, -4/+1That's what we did. My husband lost his job as soon as the economy started going downhill, so we took a small vacation with our savings. Sounds very irresponsible, but it was our only shot at taking a vacation within a 3 year period. He got another job not long after we got back. You can complain about women, but we know what it takes to stay sane in this economy.
