- rancemo, on 03/05/2009, -12/+345It only got out of committee, idiot! It still needs to go through the full house, senate and governor.
- DrummerAndrew, on 03/05/2009, -16/+218Hell yes, they're dropping like flies. Legalize it already.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -3/+150Woah, misleading title.
- vanadium77, on 03/05/2009, -3/+63Buried, misleading. Did NOT pass in any meaningful way.
- HopeForTomorrow, on 03/05/2009, -0/+50That's why he said "Legalize it already". It's a command to do something, not an acknowledgment something is done.
- MistaSkinner, on 03/05/2009, -12/+58I don't even smoke and this is pretty amazing news.
- kev0476, on 03/05/2009, -3/+36No, just no, It did not get passed, it passed a committee.
This is very different. - Hexxd, on 03/05/2009, -10/+43Free the Weed!
- Garofoli, on 03/05/2009, -9/+39One step further. We'll get there eventually!
- Hetman, on 03/05/2009, -7/+35It is getting closer. I hope this passes, and then we can eliminate the whole "Seriously ill patients" unless of course you consider my "social anxiety" to be a serious illness.

- chewbakalol, on 03/05/2009, -7/+29There are way too many people digging people down for supporting this.
If you're tired of seeing progressive marijuana news, then you are part of the problem. - Frankyfan3, on 03/05/2009, -3/+25American Medical Association Opposes the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937

Hemp for Victory!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne9UF-pFhJY
Remember that George Washington raised hemp
In his farm journal of August 7, 1765, Washington notes that he "began to separate (sic) the male from the female hemp...rather too late." An astute agronomist, Washington could only have been seeking a crop with stronger "medicinal" qualities. Founders who smoked bales of tobacco and consumed oceans of beer (Washington was young America's leading brewer) could not have missed the recreational properties of a crop well known for five millennia.

- saintdesy, on 03/05/2009, -3/+16Tripping?! Just in case you didn't know, your weed isn't supposed to be in the shape of mushrooms.

- Vbp6us, on 03/05/2009, -2/+10 Illinois: On Wednesday, March 4, both chambers of the Illinois legislature will hold hearings to discuss the need to legalize the medical use of cannabis under state law. Members of the House Human Services Committee will hear testimony in favor of House Bill 2514 at 8am in the Stratton Building, Room D-1. Later that afternoon, members of the Senate Public Health Committee are also scheduled to hear testimony in favor of Senate Bill 1381. You can contact your elected officials in support of these measures by going here, or by getting in touch with the good folks at Illinois NORML.
UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! House Bill 2514 was voted out of Committee on a 4 to 3 vote. This marks the first time a House Committee has approved legislation regarding the medical use of cannabis. For more information, please visit here.
Maine: Members of the the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee heard testimony last week in favor of LD 250, which seeks to amend state law so that the possession of up to four ounces of marijuana would be classified as a civil violation. Predictably, local law enforcement are opposing this effort. That is why Maine legislators need to hear from you. Contact members of legislature here, and tell them to vote ‘yes’ on LD 250.
Texas: Anyone who follows the marijuana law reform issue knows that change in the Lone Star State is long overdue. That’s why it is important that members of the Texas cannabis community get behind House Bill 902, which would reduce minor marijuana possession penalties to a fine-only offense. Over 60,000 Texans are arrested for pot possession violations annually. Half of these defendants are under 25 years of age. It makes no sense to saddle these young people with a criminal arrest record or to put them in jail. Tell your representatives to support HB 902 by going here, and by becoming involved with Texas NORML.
Rhode Island: This Wednesday, March 4, both chambers of the legislature will hear testimony in favor of legislation to mandate the Department of Health to establish rules governing the licensing of non-profit compassion centers “to acquire, possess, cultivate, manufacture, deliver, transfer, transport, supply, or dispense marijuana, or related supplies and educational materials, to registered qualifying patients.” To learn more about this effort, or to attend these hearings, please visit our allies at the Rhode Island Patient Advocacy Coalition.
New Hampshire: Next Monday, March 9, members of the House Health, Human Services & Elderly Affairs Committee will hear testimony at 10am in favor of House Bill 648, which seeks to legalize the use of medical cannabis is New Hampshire. Two years ago the House narrowly rejected (186-177) a similar bill, so it vital that you contact your House members and urge them to support HB 648. You can write them here. And if you wish to attend next week’s hearing, our allies NH Compassion have all the information you need here.
http://norml.org/ - inyearstocome, on 03/05/2009, -9/+17Its about time we fight for our rights and stop allowing the lies to continue.
Hemp and Marijuana have thousands of practical and helpful uses and could be even better controlled and regulated once this inane prohibition is ended. This country was helped tremendously by hemp during the colonial era, and its time for hemp to help us once again. - enantiodromia, on 03/05/2009, -1/+8Snoogs said "the civilized nation", not "most states".
there is a difference. - billybillyboy, on 03/05/2009, -0/+7Was the marijauna perscribed to you by an accredited doctor? If not, it would be pretty hard to have a "medical defense."
Also, don't smoke and drive or even think that you have a right to drive under the influence of ANYTHING. You aren't allowed to drive if you are on pain meds (it says "DO NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY" right there on the label). I don't care what studies you want to point to, there is no way any legalization laws will be passed without some stipulation making it illegal to drive while high. It is a necessary part of whatever is eventually achieved. - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -7/+14No, you ARE an idiot. Read the ***** title you wrote and tell me again that you KNEW that it wasn't actually passed yet. Or that, in turn, 90% of Diggers (those who don't read past the headline) knew it.
You are either an idiot, or purposley lied in your title. Which is it? - BTConan, on 03/05/2009, -0/+7A common occurrence here on Digg. We get excited.
- bduddy, on 03/05/2009, -2/+9Buried as inaccurate/misleading. You failed high school government class, didn't you? Or, more likely, you just wanted more Digg attention...
- theartfuldodgr, on 03/05/2009, -11/+18NJ last week, Illinois today, the rest of the states tomorrow. One can only hope!
- justsayknow, on 03/05/2009, -2/+8Then you should oppose the laws that give them a reason to complain.
- dygel, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6I'm digging people down because this isn't progressive marijuana news. It's another instance of people being unable to read the article. No bill has been passed by the state legislature; it got out of committee. Celebrating its passing as a foregone conclusion belies a complete lack of understanding about how legislative processes in America work.
- Epitaph, on 03/05/2009, -1/+7yea, you would've gotten dugg if you omitted that last sentence.
(why does everyone so quickly assume that stoners are escaping reality? wtf, meng?) - Frankyfan3, on 03/05/2009, -1/+7http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/96/HB/PDF/09600HB2 ...
- jasmus, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6Please explain your reasoning. Stupid comments on a misleading titled article will probably get dugg down regardless of which side I support (because apparently I can't just not give a *****, I have to chose a side).
- Phroday, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6Yeah, but you're still wrong. Regardless of it still being a great news story.
- omgwtflawl, on 03/05/2009, -2/+7Somehow the lying, evil, corrupt Illinois political machine can stumble into doing some good. Probably by accident, but lets give them the benefit of the doubt.
- dioland, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5they need to stop screwing around and legalize marijuana for recreational use. they could tax it and have the US out of debt in no time.
- flyingsquirle, on 03/05/2009, -4/+9Keep the reforms up!
Keep informing the people!
Get this stuff legal! - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6Lawyer up pronto.
And if it looks like you're going to do jailtime get off the grid and get back to california stat.
Hopefully it's a first offense, hopefully they didn't trump you up with paraphinalia / posession / multiple felonies.
Just remember it's a lot easier for you to drive to cali and become forgotten than to sit in jail for 20 years over some ***** charge.
P.S. Disclaimer: IANAL and do not personally condone running from convictions. Just saying 20 for a 1/4 is ***** and sometimes people have to make choices - K4Lic0, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6At least we know Joey and Jesse have our vote..
- Vbp6us, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5That will not happen anymore. The feds are stepping out of State regulated medical marijuana issues under this new drug czar.
- Visual77, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6As someone who hasn't had so much as second hand marijuana smoke in over 5 years - I want it legalized. It's none of my business what my neighbor does, so long as it does not endanger me. If he wants to get high in his living room, so be it. If he wants to get high and drive to the store, then I have a problem, since that endangers everyone on the road. I just want it to have the same rules as alcohol, which I do enjoy.

http://www.statesurge.com/bills/491050-ab390-calif ... - Zaxcomp, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5The communique between his personal gardener proves otherwise. He grew to smoke.
- greatmunizzle, on 03/05/2009, -3/+7Misleading, but.....
This is great news. Every time a state even tries medical legalization or decriminalization is one step closer toward the overall goal. The attention seems to double every day. We have legalization within time! WRITE YOUR STATE REPS!!! - MastDane, on 03/05/2009, -4/+8Fine, I'm wrong. Read the story, and enjoy it.
- NikoKun, on 03/05/2009, -4/+8The only statement Fox got against such a bill passing, was "It is the number 1 drug that introduces kids to other drugs", which we all know is complete *****. There is no such thing as a gateway, and that is even more true after legalization!
Besides, with a medical marijuana issue, it doesn't matter what teens do, this is a medicine for people in need of it, that is all that matters here. - jasegruver, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5I feel sure some do, but let's face it, 99% of the people on here are not Cancer and AIDS patients.
- squirrelza, on 03/05/2009, -5/+9I don't drink alcohol but my mom knows I smoke, and she thinks it's going to ruin my life. I showed her every article on the internet about its benefits, and how people are realizing its uses, but she still refuses to believe there is a SINGLE good thing that could come out of it. I asked her what's so bad, and her only point was, 'it's illegal'. I think legalizing marijuana would definitely change the light in which marijuana is seen.
So lets legalize this ***** so I can have a bong with my mom! Haha. - MisterFizzle, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5This bill still has a long way to go, not even close to being passed.
- ihavetop, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4agreed. define seriously ill plz my arthritis is killing me.
- MalenfantX, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4Things generally have to improve slowly because otherwise the social conservatives go insane. I wish we didn't have to worry about fools freaking out over things they don't understand, but we do have to all get along.
