- craighoxton, on 06/24/2008, -0/+26I want someone playing "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes before I get shot out of a torpedo tube
- GRVeee2, on 06/24/2008, -3/+18Death is inevitable, though, all you're doing is procrastinating your ultimate destiny... I'm not saying go kill yourself because you're going to die anyways, what I am saying is: Dont live in fear of death, because that's not living at all.
- kxxb, on 06/24/2008, -2/+14Of course people are less accepting of death these days - we realize that we won't be going to live in the clouds with our fellow deceased relatives for eternity. The fact that there's a whole lot of nothing waiting for us is a bit harder to take.
- hapax, on 06/24/2008, -0/+10I recommend reading "Mortimer Gray's History of Death", a sci-fi story about a writer who chronicles death in a society where everyone's practically immortal.
- imeddy, on 06/24/2008, -4/+12Only people who are truly alive do not fear death. Those who fear death are already dead.
- Dumbledorito, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7In addition, see Eddie Izzard's lecture on "professional mourners" from the times of the ancient Romans:

And let's all remember to "beef up the grief." - AshamedAmerican, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7Shadows and dust.
- altinnovation, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7Yesterday before going to sleep I realized just how fast we're aging. Before I know it, I will be seventy-something, and watch my life go by. After that, my whole life as it is ends. Without any real meaning. Yes, I had kids, I had friends and I had a great life. But all that will end in an instant as I disappear into nothingness, and I won't even know it. I will cease to exist.
- fLUx1337, on 06/24/2008, -2/+9You say that now at 26 years old - but how about when your half blind, can hardly hear nor walk, and your having carers do everything from helping you get up in the morning to wiping your arse?
Personally, I want to be gone way before that... - Rudegar, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6yeah it's just our electrons, protons and neutrons really like to stick together ;)
- Ablue, on 06/24/2008, -12/+17Embracing death is stupidity. Death should be feared and we should all live as long as possible.
- Cyphase, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5A lot of people, when they hear someone say they want to live forever, somehow get the idea that person wants to be old and decrepit forever, and say, "I wouldn't want to live forever." How about when there's life extension tech that actually reverses aging/disease/etc. What if your "prime" could be forever? Sure, you could still die if a bus hit you, or from some other accident (at least until most of those are solved as well :) ), and I would agree with GRVeee2 that you shouldn't live in fear of death, because than you would have to live in a padded room. Still, you should probably be afraid of runaway buses hurtling toward you ;).
- sodade, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5People living 300 years in a planet already way too ***** full sounds like life in hell to me.
- nedy78, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5I believe family members can become enamored in prolonging life of their love ones. Sometimes quality of life become an issue and people are simply existing and not living. It's very hard to let go, and except death for both sides of life and death.
- bosssmiley, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Viking funeral surrounded by all my finery for me.
Can't take it with you? Watch me! - supertaliman, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4(Will Ferrell)
I close my eyes
only for a moment
and the moment's gone
all my dreams
pass before my eyes a curiosity
dust in the wind
all we are is dust in the wind
Same old song
just a drop of water
in the endless sea
all we do
crumbles to the ground
though we refuse to see
dust in the wind
all we are is dust in the wind
Now, don't hang on
nothing last forever
but the earth and sky
it slips away
And all your money
won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
all we are is dust in the wind
dust in the wind
everything is dust in the wind
You're my boy Blue! You're my boy! - Cyphase, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4That's my favorite book series :). His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, to anyone who doesn't know.
- roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4There was once a time when you didn't exist, you didn't feel, think, or even leave witty comments on the internet. And now here you are, existing. It won't be the first time you haven't existed. Does that help at all?
- ICSU, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Carlin covered this topic. Now completely.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PiZSFIVFiU - blast_flame, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4A better solution to overpopulation than death exist you know, not having children. Anyway by then we may very well have space habitats.
- sodade, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4"You personally may find it hard to do anything with a unlimited timeframe but that is just a personal motivation problem not a global issue with immortality."
Well, I must admit that I am much better on a deadline and tend to procrastinate when I'm not.
Thanks for the link - I'll check it out...
(I understand that it may be disconcerting to some diggers that I am actually capable of questioning the things I say) - jgzman, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Here is your evidence: the body ceases to function, and eventually decomposes. Brainwaves discontinue. The person becomes unresponsive to stimulus. At this point, nothing that can be done after death. Can't move, speak, or think. What precisely do you suggest that we do after death?
And unless you can offer at least a wee bit of evidence, don't bother. Theories with no evidence are irrelevant; need I mention the IPU, and the giant sun beetle?
For the record: I believe, as a matter of Faith, (not knowledge) that there is something after death. Mostly, I believe this because it is comforting to do so. I see no reason to insist that it is true, because I have not even a shred of evidence for it. - bela17, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Art of dying ? can you prevent death ? then why prepare for it.suppose you met an accident on the road and now in ICU , you are in coma , will you be able to prepare for the death on the ventilator.?
so take it easy .do not get scared as you won't be aware of your death. - blast_flame, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5Maybe it is but I'd rather support anti-aging research and get 300 years rather than 80.
- roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3We're not in disagreement. What we see as 'not existing' after death, may be simply existing somewhere else, on another plane/dimension. We only fear death because we don't know what inexistence means.
- bosssmiley, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3The scum of the Earth.
But look what we made of them... - Frost9999, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3No, it's not.
- sodade, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3That is a ***** brilliant quote man - yours?
- TheHim, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4For so many people life is a drag. I'd say human life it far too long as it is already. So much so, that people forget to appreciate it.
Without the contrast of death, life would loose it's spice. - Ravatar, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3I don't feel that would be "death", I explained why in the other thread.
- Acglaphotis, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Emotions, as in feelings? It's your brain.
- Ravatar, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4If we have the technology to keep your "prime" everlasting, we probably have mind uploaded mechanisms. If you get hit by a bus, the chip in your brain sends a signal off to the biocenter to start building you a new body, and download your last mind backup into it.
At worst you lost a few days/weeks of memories.
The future is going to rule. - sodade, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Without death, life is pretty meaningless. Think about it, we struggle to create meaning even with a very short lifespan. Most just resort to mindgames to make themselves feel OK about it.
- blast_flame, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3That doesn't mean death is good, only that old age is worse. I'd rather have neither.
- blast_flame, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4@frostek
It depends upon the method you use. The method I like is known as cyborging where you gradually replace all the cells in the brain with nanites which preform the same function while you are awake. As you are your brain's pattern not the matter the uploaded being would actually be you. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Before you get off, please check your immediate seating area for any personal belongings you might have brought on board.
- Dumbledorito, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Yep. Your brain giving itself a chemical shower makes you feel love, fear, anger, etc.
It doesn't make those feelings any less valid, but with the right stimulus, you could artifically "feel" anything. - Ablue, on 06/24/2008, -3/+5That is exactly how I feel. As a species we are advancing past the need to be reassured by religion. We are starring death in the face. Personally I find it terrifying. Honestly I think it would be wise for all the world’s resources to be focused on how to live forever.
- Ravatar, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2TheHim: I disagree, if anything it gives people a chance to "get it right". How many people go to their deathbed with SEVERE life-long regrets??
- Cyphase, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2A "mind backup" would only be a copy. YOU would be dead. I addressed the "unduplicated copies" thing in the other thread :).
- sodade, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2In my experience with women, it seems that not having children is not a choice for the majority.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Cremation for me, to the tune of the Bee Gees - 'Stayin alive'. Oh, and possibly a written dictat that people have to enjoy themselves! The thought of miserable mourners at my funeral (should I be lucky enough to have some) really depresses me.
- sodade, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Of course people are less accepting of death these days - we realize that we won't be going to live in the clouds with our fellow deceased relatives for eternity. The fact that we spend our short lives focused on a whole lot of nothing is hard to take.
There - fixed that for you. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Not really. It's just the same argument turned backwards. Can you prove that I didn't exist, in some form, prior to my life here on Earth? I didn't exist HERE, but what about on some other plane, some other dimension?
I don't remember it but then I don't remember anything about existing in the womb either. It's possible I haven't brought any memories of my former life with me when I came here, either because it wasn't possible, wasn't allowed, or wasn't wanted.
Sure, it's a stretch, but I bet you can't provide proof to the contrary. :p - starmanjones, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3well, take my death please.... have fun.
- Ravatar, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4Won't be a problem for us. In 60 years you go to the biocenter and exchange your body after your brain upload is complete.
- monoa, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
- TheHim, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Tubes i tell you! Tubes!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO9vJS2BScE - Cyphase, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3@Ravatar
In a way that's true, but the point is that, unduplicated copy or not, YOU would still die. It would only be a copy of YOU that was uploaded. See my previous comment for part of a possible solution.
@blast_flame
You would still have to be careful to upload YOU, not a copy. Just because the transfer is from man-made container to man-made container doesn't magically get rid of that problem. Again, see my previous comment for part of a possible solution.
@fLUx1337
Frak you, you frakking skin-job!
I can't wait for the rest of season 4 :). - Rudegar, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2people are pretty conservative dont care much for change and death is a pretty big one i'd say
all lifeforms seem to cling pretty much to life why do we presume our interlect can cause us to do otherwise? -
