- Lewie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+72A few decent tips, but not the most effective. Something I learned in Aikido was to *move into* the punch. The closer you are, the smaller the distance the fist can travel, and thus the less power it has. Try hitting something two feet in front of you (your bed perhaps), and then try hitting it 6" from you. I know, it's very counter-intuitive, but it'll certainly suprise the attacker.
I take donations. - Highfinance, on 10/12/2007, -5/+60Thanks Pauly Shore!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52Take the punch and respond with, "My lawyer enjoyed that."

Awesome.... :) - PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Flame wars don't count as fights.

Damn.... - brian1001001, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37ROFL! Nice timing, and it was predicted in the Pauly Shore comments too. Good call.

- floppyparty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24LOL! This is straight from the bottom of the article:
This how-to is not intended to encourage fighting. Fighting should always be the absolute last resort in any situation. Even running away is preferable.

- joethepeacock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Just one tip that I didn't see on that page:
I've seen tips saying "move away from the punch." This is fine and all, but I'm going to go ahead and assume most of us aren't Muhammad Imod Bruce Lee.
Instead, step INTO the punch. It's strange, I know - but the truth is, a punch's effectiveness (as well as a kick's) is based mostly on range and extension. The dynamics of muscles mixed with the properties of physics dictate that the amount of power in a moving body increases as it accellerates.
So, stop the acceleration. Just step right into it. It actually stops the hurt quite a bit, and gives you an opportunity to get "in" on the opponent.
From there, you should read up on grappling and submission techniques.
Just some stuff... Digg up or down, whatever. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Then they go to their backup plan.

- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Best way to take a punch is to have a friend hover around the banquet table blocking the view while you lower the bowl below the table line and sidle away. Um, what?

- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@xrisnothing
That's simply because nerds are smart enough to know that punch's are outdated. We have technology that can prevent people from ever getting close enough to punch you! - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12We'll be needed a "How to take a kick to the ribs" wiki then.
- appetite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7learn how to wrestle because 95% of fights end up on the ground.
i've seen guys who are 5'2 140lbs take on 6' 200lb guys just because they knew how to keep their hips parallel to the ground. if you can keep from getting rolled and stay on top, you have a lot of control. - majorwimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uhhmm! My dad always taught me that if I use my face to take a punch my teeth would absorb most of the impact! Though my ability to eat solids has decreased over the years, my legend in street fighting grows daily.
- allan17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"(actually I dropped out of physics)"
And now we know why... - steveoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Hate to break it to you, but anyone who can punch decent hits you on the button (jaw), your gonna get KTFO!
The only thing that can save you from that is some type of genetics. You can't learn or teach your body to now get knocked out due to vicious impact to the jaw. - dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Are you aware that you're using the internet?
http://tinyurl.com/y9uxfy - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You're not moving towards the punch to make it hurt less. You're moving towards the punch to give it less distance to travel to make contact. Meaning that it will gain less velocity. In turn causing less pain. - High school dropout.
- Leviathan777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They forgot "be huge". No matter how weak your abs are, they can take a lot of punishment if they are cloaked in 30kg stone of blubber.
Even your head can take a harder punch if it's nice and plump. Plus if you are really huge, and you wave your arms like a sissy doing the windmill, you'll knock out half your opponents. Or at least knock them down. Then fall on them and wail away.
Who wins a fight? Sawyer, or Hurley? Enough said. Only Said has a chance of kicking Hurley's butt.
Biker beats jarhead most of the time.
I also recommend "run like a sissy, then pull a gun". Or "run like a sissy, then throw bricks" if you got no gun. Also, "run like a sissy, then come back with your 20 friends" works pretty good, from what I've seen. - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Someone changed it to:
"If power level is over NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND get the ***** OUT OF THERE."
Ugh, I liked the first one better. - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No you're taking what I asked wrong. I wasn't taking a swing (no pun intended) at geeks and nerds. Hell, I'm one.
I just didn't understand why this is on a website mainly populated by geeks and nerds. Who, I would think by what their presumed body types and demeanor's probably are the type that would pick flight over fight... So, why would they need to know how to take a punch if their running away...? - krahzee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6A few things from someone who has actually been in more than a few fights:
1) Block, block, block. Keep your damn hands up and you won't get hit with a clean shot to the face. No shot to the face = no knockout. Simple
2) There is no such thing as a fair fight: A slap to throat, punch to the groin, whatever it takes.
3) If you can get the first shot in and you know your about to get hit, do it and don't ease up until its over. I once punched someone for 5 minutes in the street to the point I broke my hand and didn't stop until I knew he was to too beat to fight back.
Fairplay won't heal broken ribs.
I had friend who knew two guys were going to jump him so he threw the first guy to the ground as they approached, breaking the guy's wrist against the bar he was crashing into at the time. Suddenly it was a one on one and he kicked the ***** out of the other guy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Here's a thought, punch first. And dont stop punching until the other guy looks relaxed and unable to move.
- saranagati, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this advice is horrible. how about slipping punches? that's probably the most effective way of defending yourself from a punch, especially when you're just fighting someone on the street. It's way faster to bend your neck in order to move your head 5 inches out of the way of a punch than readjusting your punch to hit someone. The one thing that was listed which is very useful is let them hit you in the forehead. You really wont feel any pain and unless someone is WAY bigger than you, you wont really notice it, the one throwing the punch will though as he'll have definitely ***** up his hand by punching you in the forehead. Also, if you're ready for the punch and have your arms up, dont just block by letting them punch your arms instead, swat their hands out of the way. Its remarkably easy to make someones fist move in a different direction by barely touching it. Of course most these things do require a little practice, otherwise you'll just freak out if you even notice a fist coming at your face and not remember to do any of it.
As for everyone saying to step into the punch, I think you've totally misconstrued the meaning of that. You should step into the punch because you'll be able to avoid the punch. A punch thrown at someone 3 feet away is completely different punch than throwing one at someone a foot away.
@appetite
wrestling is great unless your opponent knows jui jitsu. Also wrestling alone sucks, whats the use of pinning someone? hopefully you also know how to throw punches, knees and kicks. - Lewie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31) Moving into the punch will add some speed to the collision, but I doubt it's enough to make as big of a difference as the amount you're taking away from the punch. It's more like adding 10mph but taking away 25mph.
I would never dream of taking on Bruce Lee. I'd cry for my soul.
2) Another reason for this is because most people will try to *retreat* from a punch, which won't make it feel any better than just staring at the incoming fist. So if your instinct is to either retreat from the punch, or move into it, moving into will cause less damage. Also, yes, moving in will help you miss the punch, as the mechanics of a long punch and short punch are different (like saranagati said).
If you're trained, you can get a hold of that fist and perform a number of moves. I don't know how it works in Street Fighting, but it seems to work well with martial arts and boxing. A move inward and a twist will open up a number of counter-moves. By the way, my training was always with an uke, no shadow boxing for me. - avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dude, if you nerds try this youll end up hurting yourselves.
if you are worried about getting in a fight, keep some change in your pockets. practice throwing it and running the other way. better advice than youll get from the article... - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wait...If you are implying that that all people that use Digg are Geeks/Nerds, then you would also have to be one, too. Your comment doesn't really reflect this. :)
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've trained in boxing and muay thai for years. This article is pure garbage. I don't even know where to start...
If you're someone who thought this guide could help you here's your guide.
1.) Avoid conflict if at all possible.
This actually goes for everyone whether you've never been in a scuffle in your life or you're a ripped 275lb, highly trained wrecking machine. Between the chance of seriously getting hurt, killed, sued or jailed, it's almost never worth it.
I cannot stress this enough, if there's an out, take it. Don't be a sucker and turn your back or try ignore a looming threat. Remove yourself from danger and be smart about it.
Consider this, if some ***** is just talking ***** or getting up in your face he really doesn't want a fight any more than you do. If he wanted that he wouldn't have opened his mouth, he'd have been on you from the jump. He just wants to get off. Don't be the one to give him what he wants. Let him keep rolling the dice until he runs into someone else wackier than he is who'll blow his head off.
2.) If it's absolutely unavoidable, if you feel you're cornered don't sit there and let him throw the first punch.
Clamp your teeth, tuck your chin into your chest and coming out throwing hard fast and *straight* down the middle right in the middle. Do what you have to do. Jam a finger in his eye, bite his ear off. Kick, scratch and definitely kick him when he's down. Don't let up until he's incapacitated and then get the hell out of there.
That's really it. Fight or flee.
Some of the stuff in that article might sound good and even be partially correct but, the few correct concepts in there are explained horribly and aren't learned from a wiki...They're burned in through months are years practice, experience and skilled guidance not a quick wiki article. - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"right before the punch, take a deep breath in. Right before punch impact, breathe out. When you do this, let only about 1/4 of it out. Force the rest down into your stomach."
Do they realize they're talking miliseconds here? - ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have to agree with Aces and I started out traditional Go Ju Ryu Karate, also couple years of TKD incidentally. I dropped it long ago though.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about "How to take a stab"?
- szap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@brian
I'm not so sure this was predicted by that Pauly Shore comment as much as this is a result of that comment. - netferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I suppose this was to be expected, I guess you have a moron +10 rating or what ever you kiddies call it.
Go back to playing with your painted molded pieces of plastic and come back when you grow up. - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Jolene
Ahh! Ok, cool, thank you for the clarification. Good point! :) - cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It keeps talking about air in and out of your stomach. This obviously needs to be edited for accuracy.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you'll be fine if you want a ps3. on the other hand, if you want a wii, better bring the muay thai.
- brian1001001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@sudden:
ur just bitter that im so much more 1337 than u. ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!111eleventyhundredandone - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2most wrestlers are better at wrestling than jiu jitsu people are at jiu jitsu. it's the awareness that will help in a fight--you don't have to pin the guy. but you have a huge upper hand knowing how to control you body and his.
but i'd learn jiu jitsu if i only wanted to street fight, for sure. might have helped me avoid a broken nose.
the best advice of course is to avoid any run up to a fight at all. you could easily live in our society for a hundred years and never once get into a fist fight. -
