- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+60But what happens when I want to watch a documentary after being conditioned to fall asleep when listening to narratives?
- whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+57exactly. maybe this is why I always feel asleep in my college classes!
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I guess the poster fell asleep before they could finish the summary.

- tiger2base, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Something tells me my college professors wouldn't like this....
- skotski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24A shot of Jack is pretty quick too.
- hipstershaun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14After conditioning your self, it is important that you stop listening to books on tape while driving.

Couldn't agree any more. I initially tried sleeping pills and although they definitely knocked me out, they also had the side effect of making me very sluggish and lethargic the next morning. Marijuana doesn't knock me out quite as quickly (which is why I schedule it 2 hours prior to sleeping) but it gets the job done and lets me be fully alert the next morning.
It's unfortunate so many people frown upon Marijuana due to it's recreational uses and ignore it's medical benefits - leonwehttam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Masterbation, best sleeping pill ever :D
- sixspeed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Jack? This is digg. Grape soda and wrestling magazines is more likely. :)
- Jon855, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I'm deaf and this wouldn't help me :( Interesting nonetheless.

- ProximaC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Jesus, no wonder I fall asleep while in meetings at work...
- khag7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10not if you have a roomate
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So that's my problem...
nahh conditioned response my ass .. both sex and "touching oneself" will release chemicals in the body to allow you to easily fall asleep. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8read with your eyes closed... wtf
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6iv been listening to music to get to sleep for months, The only thing that really works is to cut out caffeine early in the day and going to the gym so your tired enough to drift to sleep, music makes it smooth but its no use if your hyped up
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You can just read a book.
I'm not deaf, but I used this method, and it works very well.
As a plus, you end up actually reading a book.
But sometimes the story gets interesting, and the effect is opposite: I keep reading with interest until I hear birds singing. Oh noes! :P - djNullSpace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ whiskeymb:
Dugg up for the Metal Gear reference:
"I feel asleep!" - InferiorWang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@NinjaBoy and kinesis8
Amen! I have mild insomnia, and my dad sells sleep drugs to doctors (ambien and etc) but what always puts me to sleep is a melatonin and a fat bowl.
I just wish more people would do the research about cannabis and realize that cannabis has some amazing medical properties that we're still only beginning to understand. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Smoke a blunt"
Oddly, I CANNOT sleep a wink while high. My mind just races. I have to wait hours after smoking before I can sleep. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think I'd be conditioned to fall asleep during lectures and important meetings (if I haven't already). I don't know of conditioning myself like that is a good idea.
- daofma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Working out is great. It keeps you awake during the day and asleep at night. Don't believe it? Try it yourself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No orgasm no sleep ninja
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used to listen to Godspeed you Black Emperor to fall asleep.
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great. Then I'll be CONDITIONED to fall asleep while sitting in meetings or listening to lectures.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love that afro haired dude...
- DanSheldon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The best sleep I got was when I cut out caffeine. A lot of people think that if you're "effected" by caffeine, that means you're wired all night. I am someone who can drink caffeine at any point of the day and still fall asleep within a reasonable time. However, after not drinking caffeine, or at least reduced amounts, I started to notice I was falling asleep faster and getting a better night's sleep.
Another techniques I find helpful are to be in a very dark room. I slept in a room that had dark garbage bags over the window which made it very dark no matter the time of day.
I also started using meditation. Not for the goal of enlightenment but to retrain myself to sleep. Choose a concept that has no answer, and focus on that. This gets your mind active on something other then the stresses you dealt with that day or have to deal with in the future. It also helps you to not think about the fact that you aren't sleeping. - daofma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sleep drugs are habit forming and have side effects. Less so the NyQuil but Ambien has been known to trigger some weird issues during sleep, like people somnambulating to such a degree they get out and drive their car, and get into accidents.
- sinkpoint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Simple method:
Do some heavy physical activity during the day.
i.e Workout
Then you will sleep like a baby. - saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, that is actually kind of weird.
- idntunknwn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's still in the page history:
Don't touch yourself while trying to get to sleep, because it will inhibit the 'conditioned' response you are looking for, unless you always touch yourself as you go to sleep. - artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I listen to Coast to Coast.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So after you start this routine, you'll only be able to sleep by listening to your narrative cd? What happens if you're away from home and you forget your cd player/cds? Do you just not sleep/have a hard time falling asleep?
- ilferetl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24 years of college will condition you for this in no time!
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Isn't this common knowledge??
- Ksilebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must be weird. I usually find my cat, place her on my chest, and just pet her until she purrs. Its like freaking magic that I fall asleep. I don't even need to be tired.
- Xinex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No because I've tried it (extensively) and it doesn't work. Blue energy has actually worked for me though:
http://lifehacker.com/software/meditation/beat-insomnia-with-blue-energy-190143.php - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perl Cookbook by O'Reilly Associates: works everytime! ;-D
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hey, i AM active, i play the Wii!
- Mattevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to fall asleep listening to old episodes of loveline on my iPod. Now my subconscious thinks it was molested and doesn't know how to properly use a condom!
- PueSi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When i screwed my sleep i used Melatonin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin
I never experienced side effects and it's really effective. - billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, it does wonders if you're in a noisy environment, as the white noise blankets and drowns out all the other distracting sounds. I had a white noise generator (little gadget that blew air through tiny holes to make a continuous "whhhrrrr" sound) as a kid and I used to be completely habituated to it, I couldn't get to sleep without it.
Now, sometimes I listen to good ambient music, great for zoning out to. I suggest soma.fm's Drone Zone if you're interested in hearing some. - Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i know what you mean. if i have caffiene any time after 12 pm, i will stay up for exactly 12 hours after i drink it -> 4 pm = falling asleep at 4 am. it took me a month to figure out why i wasn't able to sleep before i realized to cut out my afternoon coffee.
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually use Security Now for this. Seriously.
- Pegasus_Strain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great -- no wonder I fall asleep during meetings. I've conditioned myself to do so. Good information. I will now STOP stop listening to audio books when I go to bed and start using soothing music. Then my only problem will be nodding off in the elevator or at the mall. Guess I better stop listening to podcast in the car too.. LOL
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here is what I do...
1) Don't clinch your eyes shut- close them gently. You'd be suprised how often one needs to remind themselves of this.
2) Look around- with your eyes closed. If you relax, clear your mind, and look very carefully you (or, at least I) can see faint, gently swrilling patterns of light. This is probably just misfiring receptors in your eye from the overstimulation of the day...kind of like how you can see a photostrobe in your vision for a long time after the flash has gone off. Anyway, 9 out of 10 times, looking at and concentrating on these will put me to sleep in a few minutes. - virtue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops..... wrong reply :(
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have mild insomnia and I've been doing this for awhile now with podcasts instead of audio books. It really does work. Your complete bedtime environment is part of the conditioning. There really is little chance that this is going to stop you from enjoying any documentaries and the like unless you happen to have a habit of watching/listening to them in bed, in the dark, at sleepy-time. The only drawback I've found is that, if it was something really interesting to you, you end up replaying the entire thing again sometime during your normal waking hours so you can actually concentrate on the subject.
