- swifty383, on 06/08/2009, -5/+15We probably wouldn't need this if the government stopped criminalizing pain treatment. How many of these pain patients could be helped by medical marijuana?
- solboldi, on 06/08/2009, -0/+9Tibetan Buddhists have similar mind techniques.
- Sylphid15, on 06/08/2009, -2/+10I ease the pain with my favorite strain!
- inhaler, on 06/08/2009, -1/+8Starting to? Watch videos of dental extractions while under hypnosis. They've been doing this stuff for years all under the preview of science (The AMA has considered hypnosis a valid form of medical treatment since 1958).
There's really no difference between guided imagery, meditation, and hypnosis encase you're curious. - Dubbsacc, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4High Five Buddy!
- URnotheonly1, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4I ain't got time to bleed!
- dafragsta, on 06/08/2009, -1/+5I'm all for meditation and getting better control of mind and body through focus, but I bet it's pretty much impossible to focus if you are in pain. I bet there are quite a few monks who wouldn't hold up well under real chronic pain either.

- Supertrout, on 06/08/2009, -2/+5Doesn't cure marriage. The worst of all pain.
- octowussy, on 06/09/2009, -0/+3I realize the idea is incredibly old, but Dr. John Sarno is a guy who has been pushing the mind-body connection for a long time as it relates to chronic pain. His books are definitely worth checking out.

- jcmead, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3It does work however it is not perfect, I live with pain on an ongoing basis ( back injury and arthritis, with pinched nerves). My doctor gave me pain pills and on rare occations I do take one when it gets too bad to handle. On a regular basis my pain level is (on the 1 to 10 scale that they use) around a 5/6, if I try to do anything physical (beyond very short walks 100 feet, sitting or standing for more than 20min., or less or very low weight lifting 10lbs) it can quickly go up to the 9/10. Then I take a pill however, I don't care for the side effects, I don't care for the floating feeling or the slowdown that hits my mind
- soNz91, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4I just get stoned when I have migraines....better than the pills my doctor gave me.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3i know a number of people that smoke weed because of migraines.
- 9mmSleepingPill, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Actually, meditation is not a means to become devoid of thoughts. It's becoming mindful and aware of the things around you, and accepting and letting them be. It's impossible to not think unless you're dead. The liver filters, the stomach digests, the brain thinks. There will always be thoughts that arise, and noises around you. The point is to not become caught up with any particular one of them or any sensory experience (like a mosquito biting your neck, or perhaps being set ablaze), and bring your focus back to the present moment in complete and utter stillness, every time you notice you've gone off on a branch of thought. That's meditation.
Once again focus can pervade all activities. Meditation is not just sitting down and trying to concentrate. You can focus every minute of every day. And still you insist on lumping monks into a convenient category. A garbage man can be more mindful than a Buddhist Master if he tries hard enough. People are people; monks just devote more time to developing such things. And yes, you can focus while eating too. It all depends on the person and the depth of their training. Chronic pain or not, you can still accept it and maintain focus. - Subduction, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2I hate you.
- 9mmSleepingPill, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2While I'm sure there are people who have difficulty focusing under certain circumstances, keep in mind that, with enough training, concentration can be maintained in EVERY situation (while intoxicated is another story). You seem to have the idea that all monks are at the pinnacle of self-mastery. It's called training for a reason. I'm sure you've seen the pictures of Thich Quang Duc, who remained completely still in meditation while ON FIRE. He did not move an inch until the moment he died. So yeah, you should do some research.

- kitkat102, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2This is hardly new is it? I recall reading books about this decades ago. Good that more scientists are now taking this seriously but why did it take so long?
- yocouchdigga, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2sounds more like a case of "cool story bro"
- Galgum, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3So that's why House is so cantankerous and edgy.

- shylove, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3On the other hand mind control could cause pain, it depends on whose mind is in control yours or someone elses. It might even get so painful that you realize it's not your mind and you're not in control and all of the sudden you aren't you anymore... then you get listed in Who's Who but you don't know who it is!!!

Body and mind aren't differen't, either. pain comes and goes, just like everything else. once you can see that, it loses a lot of it's power. - Psyber1an, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2The 3 Rings of Marriage:

- nicepants, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Hypnosis is fascinating.
There have been a number of times I've been working on a project...so focused on what I was doing that I didn't even realize that I'd hurt myself on a sharp edge, etc until someone pointed out that I was bleeding. - Oea420, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Pain?
Hah, just smoke some black tar, no more pain... works better than pot
waiting for the digg downs! - yogastyler, on 06/09/2009, -0/+2This is my amazing back story … In the space of 4 days, my chronic back strain/pain to box lifting ability. This is the story I shared with my fave few & yoga instructors and am so thankful to these teachers who really communicated the mind, body, breathe connection.
Saturday, I fell asleep on the couch in an awkward position and when I woke up my whole mid back, from left to right was in complete agony. It was impossible to sleep and even roll on my side. I was short of breath and it was painful to breathe properly. I used heat pads and took pain killers over the weekend. The pain was so bad, I was contemplating going to the Dr or take my archive C-section painkillers. However I thought let’s start with some breathing, if necessary then take the meds, but it was difficult to do so sitting up so I decided to try child pose. In child pose, I was able to focus the breath right into the mid back, make it as broad as possible from left to right.
When I got up my back felt bearable, didn't need to take the meds just yet, and was deciding to go either to the Dr’s or yoga, I chose yoga… Kind of crazy. I’m not sure how many people would choose yoga, power yoga at that, when the feel practically crippled but I am so glad I did.
I made sure to take it easy at my pace, and for each pose to really breathe deeply into the middle of my back to make it as broad as possible, where the pain was. I could already feel my back had opened up and it has been great all day. I wouldn't recommend going to yoga for back pain relief without knowledge of correct pose position, however I could completely recommend focussed breathing into area of pain. I am in Shock and Awe of the powerful benefit of the breath.
Normally, I'm all about warrior for 2 hours and cutting back on the breathing. However, the yoga breath work penny has finally dropped and I have positive proof of th'e importance of breath is and to witness first hand & so immediately how it took care of my back.
I’m still breathing deeply to stretch out that area from time to time. It is night and day from the last 3 days. The following day I went to lift boxes for a Trunk Show… - Bigskinny717, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1ugghhhh i try to tell people the truth and no one will believe me. dont u understand how u create your own mentality??. sheesh people seriously grow some ***** balls and free your mind. fear leads to stress/accelerated death and peace leads to reassembly eternal. go ahead, say no and make sure to give yourself a negative perception feeling in your own head to back up your thought, you dumb ignorant prick.

- Gndoab, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1I enjoy practicing while intoxicated!
- zagatbuzz, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1Very thought-provoking and interesting article. It seems that alternative pain therapies work for those who are open-minded. It really is all about your perspective...great post!
- Jooze, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1I've found that concentrating on the specific location of the pain or itch helps diminish the discomfort by about 90 percent (usually only while I'm concentrating.) I've tried it with headaches too, still works, not as well though. Pretty interesting concept, glad to see an article on digg about it.
- Jooze, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1Why would someone digg you down? Thanks for the story.
