- Wezlanator, on 01/07/2009, -2/+26I poured a little bit of water on my carpet on accident and 5 days later some little mushrooms grew where it spilled.
And ever since then i just pour water all over my carpet at least once a day so I get to live in a garden of mushrooms. It's like living in the forest, but in my own room. Awesome, and it seems pretty safe. I mean, they're just like any other plants, ya know? - OutpostNetwork, on 01/07/2009, -1/+22My mortgage makes me sick every month.
- emland, on 01/07/2009, -0/+16I lived in a home that was over 100 years old and we were battling mold problems as well as having plaster dust issues from the remodeling.
I am convinced it caused my daughter's severe sinus problems that caused her speech to be delayed because she was so congested she couldn't hear. Once we moved out of the house her ear issues cleared upwithin 30 days and her vocabularly took off like crazy.
Mold is serious stuff and shouldn't be sneezed at. (Sorry, couldn't help myself.) - ViperX116, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9The best thing we ever did was removing the carpet. I use to have a cold every week. Haven't been sick once we had the carpet removed.
- acmaurer, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10I believe it - the strangest things like insulation, etc., can really impact your home. If you're never feeling your best at home, it's definitely worth looking into!
- soulonfire928, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8It's never lupus.
- sugablonde, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6yup this is true. i got asthma for a couple of years, we had no idea what caused it. i would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Well, we waterproofed our basement and voila! asthma completely gone and it never came back...must have been the mold...
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Blah, CNN. 9 times out of 10 their lead story is a fluff piece about a runaway bride or some celeb mishap. Pure journalistic trash masquerading as a quality news source.
- Godlike, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5I had a crappy pair of USB powered speakers. Give me just a moment here: this is the stupidest invention I have ever seen because it is impossible to plug the USB power into the USB port and the 1/8th into the audio and NOT have feedback unless your mobo cost 10g+. It was a constant, pulsing static.
I turned the speakers off the other day, and suddenly my 5 hour headache just vanished. I read some articles about this and apparently they use irregular white noise to actually torture people. I sleep to the sound of fans but this was different. I was going through a lot of that same stuff - headache, insomnia, irritability... all gone except for the holiday stress.
Even beyond chemicals, lighting and sound can have a huge impact on your health and especially your sleep. - the2989, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Can you trip off them?
- diggerman32, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4Lupus?
- Fedaykin311, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Umm, the article doesn't even mention one of the biggest dangers around your home:
Carbon Monoxide
which can be leaking from an improperly functioning ventilation system for your furnace or other gas fueled appliances. Every winter I hear of someone dying or being hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning because they keep all their windows closed and thus even small leaks can cause large concentrations.
Properly maintain your gas fueled appliances, and always ventilate your home, even in the winter. - ncc74656m, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3My house makes me sick. It makes me sick that it's too small, it makes me sick that I don't have enough money to renovate, it makes me sick, sick, sick!
- scalded, on 01/07/2009, -3/+6The indoors aren't even safe anymore? I swear the media expects us to just crawl back into the womb.
- RipleyIsDead, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Carpet should be outlawed.
- ObiNguyen, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Had an uncontrollable cough and wheezing once when a water leak from a neighboring unit resulted in a nice growth of mold. Not fun at all.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Well, I was in your shoes not to long ago, and here is some really good advice. Rent out two rooms in your house, screen the people you rent to, make sure they are nice people, maybe grad students or decent single people who only need a temporary space and can definitely pay rent. Do all the necessary contract work. Use that money to alleviate your mortgage payments and save that money in the process.
Mind you, there has to be tolerance for other people living in the home (better if you have a basement or section of the house with it's own entrance), and try and minimize all of your expenses as well. I did this for a year and I only have a front and back door and one kitchen. It sucked sharing my house for the year, kind of annoying, and it sometimes is hard to find decent renters. But I saved enough to renovate every room in my house. - markgl, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2to much work and too much money.
- soulonfire928, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1That's...disgusting.
- Godlike, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1I'm sure you enjoy it very much.
- kimbja98, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I would have thought that the audio and USB would be grounded in the same place (usually the chassis but also to 0V from the PSU (eliminating ground loops). What probably happened is that the amplifier has crap filtering (if it's power supply fluctuates then you'll hear it).
I get all kinds of interference when I use the front panel headphone port and USB at the same time because they're not shielded from each other. Onboard soundcards are also not shielded well so you can sometimes get interference from them also.
I also have a pair of speakers that have a fixed amplification (requiring you to use windows volume control to set the loudness) and they amplify noise most of the time as they're "always full amplification" which may apply to your situation too. - daeus, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Sounds like that episode of Bam Margera when they fill the house up with plants like a jungle hahahah
:/ - hutch1973, on 01/07/2009, -1/+2I'd like to see the state of the persons immune systems that actually got sick off some of these issues. I'm in the HVAC industry, have been to a lot of seminars on mold and toxins, and it's really amazing how little is actually verified on the dangers of mold toxins, most is scare tactics. When you see how much lead you need to do damage to your body it's laughable to worry about lead paint, unless of course your child tends to lick the walls, but then you have a lot bigger issue.
For the story on how "airtight" todays homes are...lol. Industry is making a killing on air to air exchangers, which bring in that extra fresh air to help prevent 'mold' growth in 'tight' homes. Most people don't realize how much this adds to their utility bill or really get that the new home doesn't actually mean 'airtight'. - MAARRS, on 01/06/2009, -5/+3wow, watch your cleaning solutions, the fabric of your bedding and, considering the tragedy of the Travolta family, they should include not having a Boeing 707 in your driveway.
- donkz, on 01/07/2009, -3/+1One of the better articles on digg... ever?
- victorycig, on 01/07/2009, -8/+6This is such a mainstream media scare story. How did it get to the front page?
Buried. - xsecretfiles, on 01/07/2009, -10/+2My bed sheets have cum all over it and I haven't gotten sick, so meh!
