- onionbagel724, on 05/14/2008, -1/+37my dentist saved my life by pushing me out of the way of a bus, but i guess this works too
- hatchetbearer, on 05/14/2008, -0/+23This really scares me as one of my back molars fell apart the other day, and it doesn't hurt. a tooth, with nerves disintegrated and yet i feel no pain. These are the days I wish I had insurance.
- VeniceCA, on 05/14/2008, -3/+23I love my dentist, he keeps Penthouse in his waiting room.
- Neuralphreak, on 05/14/2008, -0/+18It's all well and good that they are here to help - but can someone please explain to me why it's got to cost so damn much? I make 60g a year and I still can't afford to have my teeth fixed - granted - I have a decent amount of work that needs to be done - but it's SO expensive it's almost as if I'd have to sacrifice food on the table for dental work ... I mean really? I can't imagine how low income, poverty level people cope...
- getbusylivin, on 05/14/2008, -1/+14Great, so you have a boner when they call you in.
- fortheloveofd, on 05/14/2008, -0/+12This headline reminds me of live news headlines. "Could your teeth be killing you? Find out how this affects YOUR weekend! Tune it at 11:00 o'clock"
- ivankraszl, on 05/14/2008, -1/+10I had my hair falling out in small patches around my neck. My hair dresser said I must check my teeth. I did that and she was right, there was something wrong deep with one of my teeth in the back. After it got fixed, the hair grew back and I felt much better overall. Weird!
- ratherbeinvegas, on 05/14/2008, -0/+8I'm no germaphobe, but a shared copy of Penthouse seems very unpleasant.
- Aeric, on 05/14/2008, -0/+9"Have we scared you enough yet?"
Considering that I have something wrong with my tooth/jaw right now that is so bad I can barley swallow, yes... I'll be going to the dentist soon. - Radostina, on 05/14/2008, -4/+13Dentists are truly life savers! I just had a root canal treatment done and I feel so much better already. I've been in pain over the last few days and I am so happy I had it taken care of.
The stories about people dying from dental problems are not news to me though. Not too long ago, they reported a boy who died from a tooth abscess on the news. His family couldn't afford to take him to the dentist. It turned out that the infection got into his brain and the poor little kid didn't make it. It was horrible! That is probably one of the worst scenarios but for me that was an eye opener- I am never postponing a visit to the dentists ever again. - trpnblies7, on 05/14/2008, -0/+8Considering the importance of oral health and how it can affect the entire body, I still don't understand why dental insurance is separate from regular medical health insurance. It should all be covered under one plan.
- tehknotte, on 05/14/2008, -0/+8His name is Crentist
- daskatzsocrates, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6There are but the sad truth is most employers who don't provide some sort of dental or medical plans don't pay the employees enough so that they can afford outside insurance.
- slashbot, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6Bobby Hamilton Sr. died of neck cancer that was discovered by his dentist during a wisdom tooth extraction. Had it been caught earlier, it may have saved his life.
I agree with the article. Go to the dentist! - poidh, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6Not sure whether to Digg for the good information or bury for scaring me *****. ***** it, I'll Digg.
- elenadragon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6I stayed away from the dentist for too long because of an irrational fear, and now I need multiple root canals. I had one already, and it was not bad at all. The tooth was infected, and after antibiotics and drilling I felt much better. Going back in today to have a permanent crown put in place, and more fillings. Luckily, everything being done is tooth colored, so I won't have metal standing out in my mouth.
- cuoops, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6Kramer: You think that dentists are so different from me and you? They came to this country just like everybody else, in search of a dream.
Jerry: Kramer, he's just a dentist.
Kramer: Yeah, and you're an anti-dentite.
Jerry: I am not an anti-dentite!
Kramer: You're a rabid anti-dentite! Oh, it starts with a few jokes and some slurs. "Hey, denty!" Next thing you know you're saying they should have their own schools.
Jerry: They do have their own schools! - CaptMonkey, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5I also just had a root canal done, and while it was disappointing to hand over all of that cash for it and the accompanying crown (at least my tax rebate didn't go toward some worthless junk...), it makes me feel good knowing that my tooth isn't going to rot out of my head and cause other problems along the way.
As a side note: If you have to have one done, don't be afraid of getting a root canal. Despite what some people might say, they don't hurt any more than a filling, they just take a little longer and they're a little more sore afterward. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8Man, I have a dental problem that needs to be taken care of but hasn't. Luckily I finally got a job that provides health and dental. I finally get to enjoy the luxury of health care! Yipee!
- whooven, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Had a root canal recently myself. With a little nitrous the procedure wasn't bad at all. I dreaded it because everyone acted like it was the worst dental procedure you could have done. Don't put it off. Get nitrous if you're chicken like me. It makes a huge difference.
- cbartlett, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7I hated my old dentist. Now I have one with big boobs and a nice body and that 6 month appointment doesn't come fast enough.
- t0x2c, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5When my ball hair started falling out I took my girlfriend straight to the dentist.
- ADA531, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Dwight? Is that you?
- lucas22, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6All for the low low price of $4,999.99. seriously though, i had all four rear teeth removed, and that has given me enough room to gobble two penii at once. Thanks Dr Wang!
- becurious, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7this afternoon I have to go to my dentist :(
- goldfishey, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6hell yes, that sounds bad. So whats the deal with health and dental in the US? I know that health plans are provided by employers - but I always thought they were "come work for us!" incentives. Dont you have private health insurance policy's that someone can take our for themselves regardless of where they work?
- zantos420, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4donate your teeth? wtf?
- GQCarrick, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5You are an Anti Dentite
- Cimlite, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Man, it must be scary to live in a country where your teeth can go to hell just because your job sucks or you don't have one.
- Harelin, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4You should listen to your dentist. Let someone less fortunate than you have your teeth, you're just being selfish. Besides, I hear dentures are the latest craze.
- n3demonic, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Diane- Tom's dared me to do the news topless, I've got the goods but do I have the guts? Find out at 11.
Tom- That's breaking news and maybe Diane's Boobs later tonight. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Hatchet, look into any of the universities in your area. Most areas or decent size have a medical university (here, it is University of Rochester), and very often, you can get most procedures done at little to no cost there. And, it's not always being done by a student. If it is serious or difficult, they will often have a teacher (who is a real dentist) do your procedure, and use it to show the students what it is like. I've had that happen to me (wisdom tooth shattered, no pain for months), and let me tell you something, the pain you're not feeling right now is waiting, and building its strength. When it comes, it will feel like you got shot in the eye.
- Ikulus, on 05/14/2008, -4/+9I haven't been to the dentist in many years.
- TheBogie, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5My ball hair started falling out, turns out I had a sprained ankle. Who knew?
- bermudianguy, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3This suddenly makes me want to go to the dentist ..
- ghostfaceDX, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5Instead of taking the test, my dentist took it. Then took two to the chest. Thanks dentist!
- Digitalfilm43, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Yes, you can always get your own individual health insurance plan, but here in Massachusetts that will cost you about $500 (if not more) per month! Plus, my premium has increased 17% to 20% each year for last several years. For some people with chronic medical conditions it's worth it, just one of my prescriptions without health insurance would cost $450 a month (and that's for 9 pills). But if you don't have any medical condition, I think it would be hard to justify spending that kind of cash in case something happens. I just recently switched from my own HMO to my works PPO. I can already tell the PPO is going to cost me a lot more than any of my HMO's ever did.
- davidg11, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Mine started to disintegrate on one side (I think a wisdom tooth I never had pulled) but then massive pain came in. Unfortunately this happened on a 3 day holiday weekend. The pain was unbearable. But I did have an oral surgeon take it out. Used gas and Novocaine. They'll even give you an anti anxiety pill before hand if you want.
Now one on the other side is starting to do the same. No pain yet. What sucks is how much it costs to get removed (and my mouth has a low tolerance for novacaine- in other words what normal people have injected, i need a lot more before I feel nothing..my fear is that the dentist/surgeon thinks im making that up)
- lisaawesome, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2About two years ago I had a back molar suddenly break into a million pieces while I was brushing my teeth. I of course was freaking out and immediately called my dentist and she said since I wasn't in any pain from it that it wasn't an emergency. Two weeks later at the oral surgeon's office they basically said the same thing after poking and prodding what little remained of the tooth and it not causing me any pain. So you might not have an infection but definitely check out dental colleges around the area like the above poster recommended! That's where I went as a child when we had no dental insurance. The more complicated the work you need the quicker they will see you at the school here. You get lots of meds after the procedure that will make your wallet hurt a lot less. Good luck.
- GlassAgate, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I recently got two wisdom teeth yanked,
and they went straight into the biohazard
container. I wanted to keep the first one,
but they said that I couldn't. - goldfishey, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I think its a risk benefit thing, they figure the benefits of flouride outweigh the risks of flouride overdose. I suspect though, the flouride levels are pretty controlled, so its not a big risk.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Yes, there's always warning. And yes, people know they need to go. But, have a bad experience when you're a little kid, or suffer from a fear of dentists that borders on phobia, and it isn't very hard to let the time go by, day by day. The worse it gets, the greater the fear gets, and you find yourself in a downward spiral. It seems easy to condemn people who allow themselves to get into this sort of situation, but only if you haven't yourself been unable to sleep as pain and fear fight a war, with you in the middle.
- Mr.Gone, on 05/14/2008, -2/+4Wow, the media is really running out of stuff to scare us with. Fast forward 5 years: Headline! Oxygen discovered as key ingredient in cellular breakdown! Are you breathing yourself... TO DEATH? After the break.
- GlassAgate, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3You're teeth "healed themselves"? Please site some sources,
or I'll call this BS. - muhahah, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3I think it's important first to develop a trusting relationship to avoid this impression of being 'sold to'. Because wouldn't you want to listen to the guy who's had training and education in fixing teeth over one who's been taught to clean it? Depending on your age, wisdom teeth can be asymptomatic for many years until the eruption process starts causing problems like difficult access, ruining the tooth in front, infections in the gums, etc.
- jrizzo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Ya, later in life you are trying to avoid that at all costs.
- nanosec, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2There was recently a story in the Toronto Star about a man who went blind from not dealing with a tooth infection.
He didn't get it dealt with because he couldn't afford dental work at the time.
Most people do need dental work, but the high costs prohibit this.
On another note, Dental vacations are becoming increasingly popular as people travel outside of North America to have dental work done. - LegomanArt, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2No he doesn't.
- lisaawesome, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Man even with my dental insurance dental work does cost an arm and a leg. It costs me less to see my general practitioner than it does to get a cleaning at the dentist!
- tunapez, on 05/14/2008, -0/+224 years, here. Broke my streak last July 'cuz my pal's a hygienist and she insisted. I floss 3-4 x's a week, gargle w/ Listerine BEFORE I brush and I ALWAYS use a firm brush...no wonder people get cavities using soft & medium, they don't remove chit.
