- TheWalkingDude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+61The best analogy I've heard of dreams is to defragmentation. Dreams can be thought of as a poor sensory representation of the brain creating neural shortcuts and moving short term memories into long term. This makes accessing data more efficient. If you don't defrag your computer, it starts to run poorly.
- fixty, on 10/10/2007, -5/+61I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.
- RogerStrong, on 10/10/2007, -1/+44It's 4:51am. It *doesn't* work.
- weijie90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37Nah, I use ext3.
- norcal311, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29The irony of reading this right now...
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29I sense a fad coming up.
- foolonthehill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Either I'm missing something, or that was a timezone-dependent joke.
- KMye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25The last time I checked, there were still quite a few theories out there concerning how and why we dream (within neuroscience, I mean - not any new-agey explanations). The person cited regarding dreams in the article is a ***** pop author, not a scientist, and his authoritative, decisive tone on the issue of "what dreams are" is ridiculous.
- frositay, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16How Sleep Works: you close your eyes.
- Lowrads, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It's not hard to adopt the perception that the sessile state is the normal state, while wakeful activity is the energy consuming abnormality.
I am even more receptive to this view before coffee. - Starch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Fail.
- therilesyouknow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11and I thought a dream is wish your heart makes
- dron55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Inaccurate. I laid awake the entire night in bed today, unable to fall asleep, I can definitely confirm that it DOESN'T work. :P
- Patogrande, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I always thought sleep was what kept the Boogieman at bay.
- khellendros1984, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Article eBay?
- frozenyoghurt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Make some lunch then
- Ap31r0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+57:28 AM no sleep :|
Great link to lucid dreaming at the end... - evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's Howstuffworks. Have you not been there before? They're like Bill Nye the Science Guy but without zany sound effects and such. They take complex things and dumb them down for laymen to understand.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Reader beware! Story raped my dog!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Fascinating. Excellent summary.
- akinnee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There needs to be a button to push for sleep. Because I never can until I'm not supposed to =/
It's 7:56 AM, still haven't fallen asleep. I'll probly fall asleep in about an hr or less and then sleep till 4 PM.
Night-errrr.... Morning. - squoob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sleep is by no means a waste of time.
- knugen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3U.S. Americans sounds a lot better than United Statesians or USAians though.
- djrbx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Reminds me of Lucid Dreams
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream - pak314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I use zfs myself.
- yosempai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm so sorry. i bet that sucked.
- mcnearcj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3FTA, "Avoid alcohol before bedtime. Alcohol disrupts the brain's normal patterns during sleep."
Maybe I should start drinking in the morning?! - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It is funny how most people here mentioned their sleeping problems.
- broohaha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Somewhat of a decent read, but I felt like I was being talked down to.
To whom is this aimed toward? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He was making a new joke and stupid people didn't catch it and dugg him down. Thats expected though, since eBay is not in the list of established jokes. He should have just said "will it blend".
- atlacatl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The introduction states "In this article, you'll find out all about sleep and what it does for you."
However, the article states "But the question remains -- why do we need to sleep? No one really knows, but there are all kinds of theories..."
Therefore, inaccurate... - s0nicfreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I guess I'm wierd because I DO hear in my sleep, and what i hear causes me to have dreams so realistic that often the next day I'm not sure if things realy happened or if they were a dream... and I don't move in my sleep, I am woken up by the urge to move... if I don't wake up, whatever I'm laying on just hurts the next day.
- tanto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Life doesn’t always allow the luxury of a full night’s sleep. Still, one sleepless night need not make the next day a groggy hell. Try these strategies for surviving:
http://orangtuamurid.info/blog/2007/04/06/how-to-survive-on-4-hours-sleep/ - ZMann, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Buried for inaccurate description.
This article doesn't explain WHY we sleep, just what happens WHEN we sleep.
No one really knows why all animals sleep. The topic is always on the top 10 lists of unanswered scientific questions. - anagoge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Been up since 8:23pm yesterday. It's now 12:56pm the next day.
- neko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Everyone knows dreaming is just when your connection to the Matrix goes down for maintainance.
- oddfreakperson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ugh, i wish in was sleeping right now
- corey1505, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do we really need to sleep? The difference of 1 hour of sleep a day over a lifetime 70 years x 365 days in a year x 1 hour per day = 25,550 hours or 1503 days or 4.1 years!
I believe that sleep has evolved as a way to conserve energy because we are primarily visual animals and without daylight or electricity we cannot be very productive. Productive as defined in evolutionary terms is producing offspring that live to reproductive age.
Sleeping for other animals is a way to conserve energy and doing so at night also helps animals to avoid being eaten by predators. - psbpv3o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that's bad for you.
- Jergens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's true. Whystuffworks was absolutely great when it first came out. Simple scientific articles in layman speak for the inquisitive and logical mind. I lost interest when they started publishing stuff like "How Lightsabers will work".
This article is only somewhat informative, but written for a 4th grader. For instance, I really didn't need to know the difference between sleep and a coma. But thanks, anyway. - pak314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do some really strenuous activity like jogging or biking till you are tired and you will fall to sleep fast.
- Erectile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Now you mention it...
- Endeavorer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I sleep soundly for 10-11 hours every day. Any less and I don't feel all 100%. Maybe I think to much...
Still can't figure out whats the deal with me - KHastings45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cool article, very interesting facts. They also say we can out of body during our sleep. Anyone here experience that? New here and havent a damn clue as to what Im doing, can someone HELP. cant even find my own comments!
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"But I completely forgot that there was an A plus plus!"
- jaybyers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have Bruxism, for thos who don't know its where you grind your teeth in your sleep. Its much worse than snoring! It ruins your teeth, gums and jaw. It also makes a horrible noise. This is an example of sleep terrors! Your body knows what its doing, but can you control it?
- MelvinSchlubman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Easy for you to say when your body chemistry works like it should. I'm lucky I live in an age of effective pharmaceuticals (eg, Lunesta) or I'd practically be walking dead from lousy sleep.
- crashflow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I like lucid dreaming. Its like real life with god mode and -wtf enabled.
/spawn tank - Erectile, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Keep in mind all that is is a romantic analogy.
