- billisdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22thanks i'm glad some people can recognize when a guy has his tongue in his cheek.
"later today... scientists find that diggers mod comments up or down on the presence of certain keywords through neural shortcuts that totally bypass the brain, instantly differentiating opinions which praise google/apple/linux from those which do not and responding without deeper considerations." - billisdog, on 10/12/2007, -19/+30Everybody knows how this works. It activates the cool receptors in the brains of those around you with the second hand smoke, thereby making you that much more likely to win while gambling or be approached with a record deal.
- diggitystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Allow me to correct you.
You stand outside looking ***** badass for 10 minutes while everyone else bitches about the cold, then you come back inside totally ready to kick someone's ass, make out with 2/3 women, and thank the company that makes your brand for being smart enough to realize that living until old age is for losers. - asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Mod crawfish UP (oops, I meant to reply to HP844182, the comment below this). Nicotine and caffeine IMO are VERY VERY addictive. I myself find it easy to use Nicotine and even Heroin occasionally, but I have a problem with caffeine and cocaine (they are related, both stimulants and share many of the effects, both good and bad). I'm not being sarcastic!
400mg of caffeine (about 4 cups of coffee, or 2 caffeine pills) cause me extreme withdrawal symptoms after 2-3 hours. Irritability, severe headache and nausea. I'm not saying caffeine is the worst drug, but I am saying that it depends somewhat on genes and body chemistry.

- RH78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I smoke..and wish I never started. My health has gone down hill. Nothing drastic, but my endurance is really low. Plus, sometimes I feel even worse after I smoke. I trying to quit right now, but it is the hardest thing I have ever done.
- Gisterogue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8People usually start because their friends tempt them in to it or they think they will fit in better/look more cool with other people. It doesn't take long for this to just become a habit. Simple really.
What annoys me more than the health issues (and I have never smoked) is the cost. Ok, it isn't good to smoke at all, and I don't agree with it whatsoever, but if you want to smoke that is up to you, and the government shouln't charge such huge amounts on tax. - abqjudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This grumpy old nicotine addicted broad began smoking when it was promoted by all of society with doctors in cigarette commercials etc.
Do not recommend smoking, but it is my one last vice as I teeter on the down slope after 60. So I get the pure tobacco (no additive) cheapies at the Indian store, ($13 a carton), smoke as little as possible and rarely in public. Acknowledging the damage done to health of many, I must say that my forebears all smoked and they lived well beyond their 90s. So genetics and nutritional history have something to do with the ability to smoke without danger. We all have tendencies toward some habit or another. I can't stand "downers" of any sort. I elect surgery without morphine if I can just have caffeine and tobacco to distract me. So what?
The tobacco studies are all statistical studies, and since this implies outliers in every case, cannot be irrationally applied to every living person. Still, I will be courteous and never encourage another to use tobacco in any form. - kakwakas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Depending on what you're smoking it out of (cigarette, cigar, pipe, hookah, etc) it can be for taste, boredom prevention, social interaction, or just to look cool. =p Some people (not too many anymore, I think) use it to lose weight, too, as it can work as an appetite supressant.

Works pretty damned good according to the NYSE... - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Right now I'm on a quit program/study from the University of Minnesota. I've been on "prescription cigarettes", that being Quest cigarettes for almost a month now. They are nicotine-free cigarettes. They taste awful(there's no nicotine "buzz" when you inhale) and it makes you realize the futility of smoking. I haven't had a "real" cigarette in over 2 weeks(lost count).
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Cause thinking your cool is highly addictive...
"Some physicians compare the addictive qualities of nicotine to heroin and barbiturates but others maintain that for many people cigarettes can be even more addictive than heroin, barbiturates or alcohol."
Source: http://www.ash.org/papers/h1.htm - rassoodock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ok, I guess you didn't know anyone who started smoking in middle school. At that age, everything you do is pretty much "because it looks cool."
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no *****?????
- bkool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I personally don't know any smokers that started because they thought it was cool or made them look cool. They did it cause it gives you a freakin' buzz! And they usually do it while drinking because the 'feel good' effect is better.

- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't see how anyone can afford to smoke. It's just too darn expensive.
- B111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@teratogen
nicotine gum actually isn't really nicotine, but a chemical similar enough to help people quit. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Heavy taxes on intoxicants is fair IMO. Everybody knows it's not in society's interest to have such vices but still, people get compelled by it. High price is just meant to prevent people from overdose or even get into the habit.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One of the reasons that your feeling so cloudy headed is because nicotine effects the way your body maintains blood sugar. As a smoker your probably were able to eat most of your food at one time of day and go for long periods of time without eating because nicotine stimulates the secretion of blood sugars. Once you quit your body doesn't know how to manage its own blood sugar levels. This will subside after several days. In the meantime try to eat regular meals and drink fruit juices as the sugars from these can be easily absorbed into the blood. It won't be perfect but you'll feel much better.
The withdrawl will peak after 72 hours (getting steadily worse until then) this is how long it takes for your body to eliminate nicotine. Drink plenty of water. After day 3 things will start to (slowly) get better. Don't use an nicotine replacement therapy as this will never allow you to over come the nicotine addiction. The first month will be bad, but IT WILL get better (I'm a former smoker myself, 10 years before I quit). Every time you resist a craving your retraining your mind.
hope that helps! - mt066, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I used to think they were great to kill time if I was stuck waiting for a ride or I got somewhere too early, and was just standing around walking in circles.
Not anymore though, now I just walk around and probably look like I'm lost. - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Become addict to pr0n and/or videogames; death comes suddenly, usually in form of a heart attack, and not that cancers and stuff - full of horrible, slow, dirty suffering...
- thatbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The nicotine itself is the dangerously addictive part - everything else is just carcinogenic icing on the cake.
- rassoodock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Uh, did you even read the article? People smoke for the same reasons they do anything else that makes them feel good.
- scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm on my second day of quiting smoking (this will be about the 20th time I've quit!). If anyone has just started, or is thinking of trying them out, stop before you get addicted as it's a horrible way to live life - waiting for the next fix. (and bloody difficult to try and stop)
The withdrawels are very bad today, I've got a cloudy head and nothing seems to make much sense, but hopefully I'll beat the nicodemon this time! - bkool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@o0joshua0o
It depends how much you smoke. A pack a day or two can get really pricey. But a pack a week for less than the cost of a fast food meal is not very much. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Flavoured tobacco in a sheesha is very nice to smoke. You can order a sheesha (like a hookah with 1 hose) at many coffee shops and restaurants in the middle east and India. You put some flavoured tobacco in the bowl on the top, usually fruit flavoured like apple or strawberry, and press a hot coal wrapped in tinfoil down on the goopy leaves. It tastes very nice and clean and lasts over an hour. If you're not a regular nicotine smoker you'll walk away all goofy and dizzy.
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Here in NY we have many "huqqa bars", especially in the Middle Eastern communities. They also have non-tobacco/nicotine containg flavors. You won't get any psychoactive effect but if you're a non-smoker you might enjoy it.
- bodger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2High tax revenue is the ONLY positive from smoking.
- B111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IIRC, most of the negative health effects from smoking comes from the vector of delivery (burning the tobacco). Isn't the actual smoke the harmful part, not the nicotine per se?
I'm wondering if one were to say use a vaporizer if one could get the nicotine fix without all the problems associated with nicotine smoke (although lugging around a vaporizer would be inconvenient). - toddsayshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wore the patch for a little over a week and found myself getting addicted to it as well. So I just used it to get over the whole hand motion thing. Also try to exercise (like running or walking) to take your mind off of it.
- Cubefrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article had excellent information about nicotine. Many of the facts relating to chemical composition and varying effects on the body are new knowledge to me.
There are many things about cigarettes that I don't like. And the only reason I can now resist the temptation to smoke them is because I don't want to let the government profit from the harm it causes. I also like to keep in mind, "Its not what goes into your mouth, but what comes out" before criticizing the users of tobacco... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Smoking or Chewing Tobacco is injurious to health.
(let the burying begin) - broh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good luck to you! I found the patch works really well to handle the physical dependancy. You just have to take responsibility for the mental part.
- waynechng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sympathize with what you're going through. I quit smoking a year ago and if it helps you, I published how I did it here:

Oh come on, there are other positives.
1. Makes you look totally awesome.
2. Gives you something to do when bored/avoiding getting work done
3. Increases your survivability in the event of a house fire you may have caused
4. Chicks dig it
5. Makes you feel gooood
6. Helps cover the smell of other drugs/women
7. Can be used to detect laser beams, thus preventing you from alerting the guards
8. Makes you look totally awesome
9. Bitchy "Green Party" people won't waste your time by inviting you to their stupid parties
10. Every great man/hero/comic book character smoked at least a pack a day
Am I right or what? - StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A vaporizer would cut the health risk a lot but its still addictive.. so its less bad for you than nicotine + all the other crap like tar
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its just like every other business that rips you off. They should charge less.. and you cant overdose on tabacco, unless you think throwing up is overdosing. Its strange how weed that you buy on the street is very cheap, then when you goto a smoke shop they charge 35 a gram for salvia, and thats one of the lamest things to do. Its good once or twice but its not worth 35 a gram. In arizona for chronic its 15-25 a gram, and for shwag its 8 grams for 20. Anyway, people who disagree with drugs and what not, should also disagree with the fact that government makes alot of money on all this crap.
- rassoodock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh, cigarettes are pretty cheap compared to most other drugs. It would be nice to buy weed for the same prices you pay for cigs.
- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just FYI if you roll your own you generally pay far less money (depending on municipal/state laws). And before people say that's even worse: you can generally get the same tobacco you'd get in manufactured cigarettes and you can get the same filter tubes. The same cigarettes at a fraction of the cost.
- rams832002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was smoker for two years now i quit ...i feel great to be a non smoker again...there is nothing in smoke.....i actually increases our anxiety level for some time and make us feel depressed for manifolds...so more our tooths get grey in color...and we lose our beauty...
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree! I smoke occasionally but usually only when I go on vacation to other countries. I stock up on a few duty-free packs and they last me a long time because I usually take months to finish 1 pack. Here in NY, Marlboro = $6.25-50 a pack.. how do you smoke a pack a day? That's around $175 - $182 a month.
Tip: You can save a lot of money by buying rolling Tobacco and rolling your own cigarettes. Another advantage is that this Tobacco stays fresh/moist longer than cigarettes. - Teratogen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2nicotine gum

- nanito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ahhh, nothing better than being in my fave chair, smoking a black cigarrette, and reading Digg :) How about all those addicted to stress, or to drama? gambling? You name it.
I tell you, the western governments do their best trying to ban cigars because you relax/feel good when you smoke. Same reason with the pot. Why they don't ban coffee? coke/pepsi? Because they want you to run, run run, work like a slave, you little unhappy cog. -
