- jtobe, on 04/11/2009, -1/+64Heroin is just slightly modified Morphine. I was on medical heroin/morphine in the U.S. while i was in a coma after a motorcycle wreck. They had to ween me off of it for 2 months. I still have a prescription for medical opium (hydrocodone and oxycontin -- all of these are opiates). Nearly every drug you believe is illegal is legal for medical purposes. There is legal cocaine, legal heroin, legal meth (ADD drugs), and legal everything but cannabis.
If you did not realize this, please admit there might be more that you don't understand.
Take the time to research cannabis before passing judgement. Also, it would be good if you could research Harry Anslinger and how/why he started this whole campaign. - moliver21, on 04/11/2009, -2/+59Don't forget to bring a towel.
- wily6, on 04/11/2009, -1/+57My mind cannot comprehend how a natural plant can be deemed "immoral or simply illegal."
- commulction, on 04/11/2009, -1/+47Did anyone else watch that video in there? There was a lot of BS in it.
- drmobutu, on 04/11/2009, -2/+47Good article, but I found one mistake: California medical patients can possess up to a half a pound (8 oz.), not half an ounce.
- IgorUnchained, on 04/11/2009, -1/+44Ever had a toothache or some kind of nagging pain like that?
It doesnt "kill the pain" like an opiate, but it can help take your mind off of the tooth so
you can go to work or eat a meal.
Ever have trouble getting to sleep or feel the effects of occasional insomnia?
Never again.... and without that Ambien induced "sleep eating/driving".
Know anyone with depression or Anxiety? Not your emo friends, but the ones who take
mood stabilizers and anti depressants?
It can help with that too. Not just by reducing inhibitions, but by giving the occasional laugh.
A belly laugh or a prolonged chuckle would be preferred medication when compared to Ritilin or Zoloft.
That is what I can vouche for. My friend is a cancer survivor, but his testimonies are his own and I wouldnt do them justice. I have another friend who is disabled due to a back injury. He is completely off of opiates and treating himself solely with marijuana (which relaxes his back muscles so that they dont spasm).
If you could get all of this (and so much more) from a glass of chamomile tea, why the hell would you make it a Schedule One Narcotic and keep it away from patients and responsible consumers? - Metavised, on 04/11/2009, -1/+31Heroin is used medically in the United Kingdom.
- greanbean, on 04/11/2009, -0/+25if a drug was discovered that could safely: help ease pain, reduce nausea, help cancer patients regain weight, relieve insomnia, etc. it would be toted as the next "miracle drug" and be more available than tylenol. but since it is cannabis you go to jail for using it.
- greanbean, on 04/11/2009, -3/+26what the hell kind of reefer madness bs was that video?
- Atario, on 04/11/2009, -2/+20"How Medical Marijuana Works"
Rather well, from what I hear. - bmanam, on 04/11/2009, -1/+17Unbeleivable *****!!! Damages braincells? Studies show cannabinoids actually aiding in brain/nerve cell development and restoration. Stupid ***** FUD. The modern "Reefer Madness".
- Andrewticus, on 04/11/2009, -1/+17Not all of it was *****, but there were parts in it that were just plain false.
It kinda' upset me to watch. - KenSPT, on 04/11/2009, -1/+16It amazes me how the "drug war" has hypnotized so many educated people against marijuana; be it for recreational or medicinal purposes.
I'm a huge advocate for legalization, and just last night I was having a conversation with two of my friends, both are College educated, extremely coherent and intelligent individuals, and they were standing firm on their "belief" that marijuana is just as dangerous and hazardous as cigarettes, and as such shouldn't be legalized.
Sure, they had no proof to back up their claims, and they ignored the proof I had that showed they were wrong, but they were steadfast in their beliefs.
There have to be millions of people across the country just as uneducated and confused on the subject as my friends, and educating them is the main hurdle we need to jump over in an attempt to legalize the plant. Unfortunately, as I learned last night, that's going to be a difficult undertaking; regardless of whether or not we can back up our beliefs with things like "facts". - sarcasmosis, on 04/11/2009, -0/+15Dangerous misinformation. It's just regurgitated propaganda, and it's pathetic that the medical community continues to repeat it instead of refute it. Talk about invalidating the article.
- LifeVirusZERO, on 04/11/2009, -2/+16Are you serious? Dr. Kevin Smith?
How appropriately ironic... - Hollyvvood, on 04/11/2009, -2/+15Personally, I thought it was pretty self explanatory.
- jgubbe, on 04/11/2009, -2/+14A bunch of children really know more than myself about this subject. WTF, was that some more DARE type propaganda? Like stated above, Vaporizers and eating are ways to use the product without damaging lungs. It is also much less harmful to many of the bodies organs than many pharmaceuticals. Recent studies have shown THC fights bacterias- http://www.injuryboard.com/national-news/study-sug ... .

http://www.videosift.com/video/The-Union-The-Busin ... - randall814, on 04/11/2009, -1/+12Every time I see someone use the word dopers, I can't help but assume they are 63 year-old white males.
- fety, on 04/11/2009, -1/+11ADDICTS??? oh really?? care to explain that one?
- MrChunks, on 04/11/2009, -1/+11How can California be so forward and so backwards thinking at the same time? You can possess half a pound of (medical) marijuana but at the same they don't allow same sex marriage. Weird.
- greanbean, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10good for lulz tho.
- bill679, on 04/11/2009, -0/+9The damning "statistics" in the report you link to are laughable. "six times as many emergency room mentions of marijuana use as there were in 1990" -- to 'mention' marijuana in an emergency room does not mean that's why you're in the emergency room. Doctors (usually the physician's assistants) often ask during routine checkups if any drugs are used, alcohol drunk, etc. I'm quite sure if the government were to open those private files they'd see an increase there as well, but I'm guessing the marijuana the patient who smokes from time to time while lounging at home watching The Daily Show at night has not had their lives negatively affected by the drug. Certainly the lives of cancer patients and others in similar need have had their lives POSITIVELY affected by marijuana.
I periodically have a beer or two with friends, and if I mention that to the ER attendant as part of the normal intake questionnaire "Do you ever drink alcohol? How often?" I shouldn't expect a government agency like the DOJ to classify me as a drug abuser that went to the ER because of alcohol. I did 'mention' alcohol, but I could very well be in the ER that day because I cut my finger slicing tomatoes with zero alcohol in my system.
And as for the other supposedly damning evidence in the DOJ link provided, 225,000 Americans entered substance abuse treatment 'primarily' for marijuana dependence, there is scientific proof that THC is not chemically addictive, as drugs like alcohol are, and as countless dozens of prescription drugs are and have been for decades.
The point of the original posted HSW article isn't to discuss the legalization of marijuana, it's to discuss How Medical Marijuana Works. We have medical Vicodin, medical Codeine, medical Morphine...on and on. I'm curious why the DOJ doesn't list addiction treatment statistics on those drugs. - AskAboutMe, on 04/11/2009, -1/+10I'm disappointed in 'How stuff works.com'. The content is old, the facts aren't up to date (ie. Michigan is a medical marijuana state also), and the video is just pathetic. It sounds like a propaganda video for children in High School not to use marijuana. Little do they know that Doctors, Lawyers, and even Pharmacists, use it on a daily basis.

"A DEA officer holding a marijuana plant"
Yeah. Cool uniform. - deadasdisco, on 04/11/2009, -3/+12because ... it's in the bible?
i dunno, i got nothin. - zephc, on 04/11/2009, -1/+9I think someone is jealous he doesn't live here.
- deadasdisco, on 04/11/2009, -1/+9might be the most retarded comparison ever.
- dragonbladev, on 04/11/2009, -0/+8my favorite is the "there are over 420 harmful chemicals in thc"
anyone think they pulled that number out of their ass or do u really think that is a awesome coincidence.
420 nine days away WOOT - swerwerwer, on 04/11/2009, -0/+8Because the only way we can end prohibition is to try to reverse the last 70 years of anti-marijauna propaganda that obviously effected your judgement!! and to the person that said California should break off into the ocean... If it would mean we could govern ourselves the way we want without the DEA interfering and that we wouldnt be held back by you ignorant cousin ***** then we gladly would!
- AmazingSteve, on 04/11/2009, -0/+8It makes Woody Harrelson see Zombies, that's how it works.

Then don't get married to someone of the same sex as yourself. - zephc, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7"Secession", and I agree.
- greanbean, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7so...they DO agree that it has medicinal properties? or are they just selling it so people can get high?
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+8Saranael: heroin began as a pharmaceutical manufactured by the Bayer company, the same people who provide us with the aspirin necessary to ease the headaches caused by ***** such as yourself.

There, fixed that for you. - deadasdisco, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6i love sandwiches.
- EhBlueDuck, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6Marinol is synthetic THC. Cannabis is much more complex.
- randall814, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6I guess I don't see the correlation between any two things out of everything you said.
Sounds like you're on much more than Ms. Jane. - LifeVirusZERO, on 04/11/2009, -2/+8also, FTA:
"doctors recommend medical marijuana for many conditions and diseases, frequently those that are chronic."
Chronic? Seriously? - jb0nd38372, on 04/11/2009, -1/+7I'll tell you what I think about medical marijuana as soon as I finish...... Where did I put that damn sandwich?
- chkdg8, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6I know! Who produced that *****, Joseph Goebbels?
- randall814, on 04/11/2009, -1/+7Buried as an imbecile that apparently forgot how Digg works. You actually don't have to read more than the headline... if the story isn't for you, you can either bury it or skip right past it. That does not mean you have to spend the extra effort burying the story, clicking the comment section, and leaving a comment. Also, you buried it for the wrong reason. It is not a dupe. If having multiple stories about the same thing is a dupe, that would mean I hope you bury most of the stories here (Obama, Apple, Twitter, etc.). Also, you insinuated that marijuana users, activists, and non-using supporters are all addicts, which is 100% not the case because there are no physical addictive properties in marijuana.
Just leave Digg. We'll find a way without you. - ambion, on 04/11/2009, -1/+7If you're terminally ill and in great pain opiates like morphine and heroin will help you through your final hours. I would rather die a comfortable death surrounded by my loving family than die in excruciating pain. I would not want them to remember my last moments that way. I'd rather die as a junkie.
- jimdaworm, on 04/11/2009, -1/+6The below is not quite correct, a vaporizer does NOT burn the marijuana as it doesn't reach the temperature at which combustion occurs. The THC does however evaporate at a lower temperature (starting around 180 Degrees C)
"alternatives to smoking include marijuana-laced foods or using a vaporizer. A vaporizer is a device that burns marijuana at a lower temperature than when it's smoked. The vaporizer releases the THC from the plant but produces fewer harmful byproducts. Volcano, one popular model of vaporizer, sells for around $500." - TrevorBelmont, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5You say things like "Holly-weird", doncha?
- rondobbs, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5Posted the article to inform. How Stuff Works is a good site. I'm a non using supporter.
- PhreakMac, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5"many studies also have linked smoking weed to testicular cancer and mental problems. "
Many other studies reverse those "facts" - Majora26, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5great pictures of a "rave" party
