- Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8*****. If you'd just RTFA you'd see it's nothing to do with withdrawl. Withdrawls are chemical and psychological, but have some root in the brain, or areas affected by alcohol. Hangovers are caused by breaking down alcohol and the subsequent dehydration it causes, it's universal and doesn't make you want more alcohol, which disqualifies it from being a withdrawl.
- laserick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The story says alcohol isn't a remedy. But eggs, bananas, water and juice are.
- rightofcenter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Uh, it lowers blood pressure, cleans toxins, and makes ugly girls look less ugly.
- ozkr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6that food seems completely disgusting when I'm hungover.
- Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Take 4 glasses of booze and you'll see. It makes you act more sociably. Admittedly too much leads to a huge range of troubles, but if you make sure everyone you're with drinks as much as you, at least no one else will remember it!
Seriously though, i'm sure anyone will admit it is a poison of sorts, but if you drink it it makes you more outgoing and sociable. Not in a way that you need to augment your own personality with it, it justs makes social situations more fun, in moderation. Though in excess it can be a riot too. Abuse is the key word there; despite what people say, you can binge drink every once in a while and not become an addict. - jdgtrplyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This article could come in handy...

- djgroovyslug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I find it touching that on a Saturday evening after a Friday Night of Many Regrets this article appears to only remind me that I haven't changed out of my pajamas all day, the only thing I've eaten is the takeout Chinese (Secret Hangover Cure #9) I ordered around 3, and my laptop and I are slowly morphing to become one with my roommate's black leather couch.
Salud, gentlemen. - Sh0cker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I don't see alcohol as a remedy...
- SnakeO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Headaches result from dehydration because the body's organs try to make up for their own water loss by stealing water from the brain, causing the brain to decrease in size and pull on the membranes that connect the brain to the skull, resulting in pain."
Holy *****, that sounds like it'd be really bad for you. - rightofcenter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I, for one, dont understand this "I dont get hangover" stuff.
Every night after heavy drinking I will get a nasty, near incapacitating hangover. Same with people I went out with, and ones that kept up with me.
Trying everything that anyone on any corner of the web has mentioned only one thing (or one combination) has allowed me to be functionable that morning, and into the day.
Solution #1 (after a night of moderate drinking, where you can still remember what happened.)
-Chug lots of water before going to bed. We are talking 40 ounces, or until you are full. If you are very prone to hangovers, an aspirin or two will help also.
Solution #2 (after a night where you dont remember a thing but you know you didnt throw up b/c you feel like you have been ran over.
-smoke pot, eat extra spicy food, chug water, take aspirin, nap 1 hour, there you go. Repeat step one if you are not planning on doing anything that day.
For all of those who must take drug tests as a part of your employment, I am sorry. - SnakeO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"It usually takes five to seven cocktails over the course of four to six hours to cause a hangover for a light-to-moderate drinker (a man who drinks up to three alcoholic beverages a day or a woman who drinks up to one)."
3 drinks / day seems a bit excessive for a 'light to moderate' drinker - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@rightofcenter
Pretty spot on advice. When I used to drink in my younger years I found that chugging water at the end of the night can really make things easier on yourself in the morning. Also sleep with some water nearby so you can easily hydrate if necessary during the night, sometimes walking to the kitchen for a glass of water in the middle of the night can be an harsh task if you've drank too much - keep it within arms reach. You'll be glad you did. Also eat a big greasy slice of pizza before bed.
And last, don't go to sleep immediately after drinking, you'll be better off if you stay awake for an hour or so after drinking before you go to bed. You usually get the worst hangovers when you go to sleep RIGHT after drinking.
Now that I'm older and wiser I'll tell you the REAL hangover remedy though: DRINK IN MODERATION (or not at all)! Most of the time it's just not worth it. - dannighe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always chug a thing of Gatorade before I go to bed, never had a hangover yet. Not for lack of trying, of course.
- poimaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So on Sunday if I concoct a mixed drink with blended french fries, egg yolks, fruit juice, aspirin, vitamins, and time I won't wake up in the arms of a fat Albanian trapeze artist... like last new years? Or I still will, just without the pounding headache?
- DCLXVI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The whole point of a hangover is that you didn't remember to eat and drink something healthy before you went to sleep.
There is no such thing as a quick hangover remedy. Beer works fastest but it only postpones the problem. If sleeping or drinking more isn't an option then I recommend eating something very salty and drinking lots of water, the salt helps your body bind the water. It's not a cure, but it makes the pain go a way slightly quicker. - Skanadian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3At the top there is an index, and you can select a page.

- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Drink a full glass of water or 2 if possible and some aspirin before going to bed.

- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can explain very shortly how hangovers do not work.
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I usually take a gatorade as the cure in the morning. Vitamins and fluid helps. Then just start drinking as much water as you can and you'll piss the toxins out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I was thinking about this I started to think that vodka and gatorade may be the best option for going on a bender.
Any enterprising bartenders want to create a new drink category? - bdyment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Because alcohol is absorbed directly through the stomach, the cells that line the organ become irritated." - Are they sure about that? From my education, I've learned that alcohol is absorbed through the small intestine, it has a much larger surface area than the stomach, allowing the alcohol to reach the brain faster. I suppose that just goes to show you can't believe everything you read.
Also, the only thing that will cure a hangover is time. Hydration will help prevent the symptoms though, so alternating an alcoholic beverage and a glass of water while your having your fun that night, will help prevent/reduce your hangover the next day! - scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1also, ive found that dancing _reduces_ my hangover in the morning, my logic says its because i'm sweating out the alcohol!
- archemedes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, up until now, I thought I was the only drunkard on Digg.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3depends on whether the chick was banging anything against your head.
- scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My perfected hangover cure after 3 years of constant drinking at uni:
1) 3 bottles of sports "re hydrating" drink (normally lucozade) - it contains loads of minerals and other good things lost during intensive sport activities, most of which correlate with heavy drinking. The extra glucose and other bits and pieces also help you move in the morning. These should be drunk ASAP in the morning!
2) A 2 litre bottle of water - after the rehydrating drinks this should be drunk at a steady pace throughout the day to rehydrate
3) A very hot shower - the hot water gets your heart pumping and helps circulate the blood, kick starting the process of getting all the crap out of your system. It also helps to rehydrate the skin.
4) Food - if you feel you can't handle food, the best thing is to get those drinks down you first, once those have passed through you usually feel like eating. I personally find greasy food the best for a short term boost - the oil helps to absorb and alcohol left in your system (domino's pizza is a personal favorite if I can't handle cooking!). Once the grease is out the way, snack on "watery" fruit, such as melons (you have no idea how satisfying it is to eat an ice cold piece of melon when you're bodies all hot and bothered from breaking down the alcohol)
5) Sleep - usually sleep isn't an option on a hangover, you've got to be out and about doing something that usually involves co-ordination. I have no cure for this other than to think positive and know that i'll have an excellent nights sleep waiting for me at the end of the day (unless of course I'm going out again!) - Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The most interesting part of the article:
"When alcohol is consumed, it enters the bloodstream and causes the pituitary gland in the brain to block the creation of vasopressin. Without this chemical, the kidneys send water directly to the bladder instead of reabsorbing it into the body. This is why drinkers have to make frequent trips to the bathroom after urinating for the first time after drinking."
Never knew that. - scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Positive effects of alcohol:
1) We regress and find toilet humour even more funny
2) It's easier to get laid
3) Pain gets reduced so falling out of trolleys doesnt hurt as much
4) You no longer have to worry about budgeting
5) A McDonalds has never tasted better than at the end of a night
6) Ugly women become beautiful
and last but not least, the stories.... theres nothing better than sitting around in the pub with your mates reminiscing about stupid things that you've done while drunk! - JesusIsSatan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I rarely get hangovers now even though I still occasionally drink a pint of vodka or equivalent hard liquor in a night. I noticed only certain wines and hard liquors give me hangovers. I think it's the sulfites in the wine, and cheaper hard liquor don't filter out alot of the garbage. I rarely get hangovers from Skyy or Absolut vodka because I think they filter it about 4 or 5 times. Drinking a liter of water before going to bed is the key. I didn't know about the lost potassium and other electrolytes, so I think I'll stock up on Gatorade now which would take care of the water and electrolytes.
- hichnii, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Art-of-Detoxifying-You ...
I am sure you would be aware of detoxifying foot pads. Most of us would have definitely heard about detoxifying foot pads but we might not really know as to how to make use of them, what do they contain and what are the benefits of using detoxifying foot pads. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also my Mexican friends have always told me that Menudo is the ultimate hangover cure, unfortunately I can barely stomach that stuff sober.
- TheAthlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I've found that taking a cocktail of vitamin and mineral supplements both before and after drinking can almost completely prevent hangovers. Before and after drinking (take your supplements with your last meal before drinking alcohol) take 2000mg of vitamin C, 400iu's of Vitamin E, a B complex supplement, Selenium, garlic, lecithin, milk thistle, a multi-vitamin, a multi-mineral, and a capsule of NAC-which is N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, an amino acid that will replenish that cysteine written about in the article.
I went to two parties on Christmas eve, and it's safe to say I consumed a few drinks...beers and shots, about 5 shots, and probably about 10 or 11 beers (I ate food during this time too) over a 12 hour period. I took my supplements before and after, got six hours sleep after getting home (threw an aspirin down with the vitamins here) and was absolutely fine the next morning. The combination of antioxidants and the NAC does the trick. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have only had one true hangover in my life. That was plenty and I never drank that much again. I will never understand people who can withstand that week after week.
- rightofcenter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sundancekid-
yeah im done with college, so the blackout nights are fewer and farther in between. Every time I do get extreme hangovers, I think the same thing, how did I let myself do this again after suffering through this punishment so many times before?
also, since im not at school the "medical marijuana" cure is much harder to obtain and honest to god, that stuff works wonders for terrible hangovers. - Kaboom108, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Good choice after-school special boy, please stay away from alcohol forever, it leaves more for us. Please also make sure you avoid fast cars and women as well. I suggest you investigate exciting careers as a filing clerk, actuary, or accountant.
P.S. One night of drinking won't kill you any more then one cigarette or one joint. Give it a honest try before blindly following propaganda. - rightofcenter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sundance kid-
Greasy pizza works great, make sure to add hot sauce, jalapenos and red peppers and dont skimp.
my favourite is a chorizo burrito, extra spicy of course.
menudo works too, if you can handle the stuff. i eat it, but dont care for it much. make it extra spicy though. - agentbad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Darkhacker, watch the movie trainspotting to better understand why people do drugs. Your concentrating on all the negatives when in reality drinking is actually a lot of fun. Even more so when you're with a lot of good friends who can all take turns making fools of themselves and have a good laugh. From what I can tell DARE makes people even more curious about drugs instead of giving them an honest 2 sided argument.
Don't take aspirin or tylenol after drinking a lot or the next day because the extra load on your liver can be damaging. Advil and water seem to be the safest and most effective for me. Instead of taking a whole multivitamin which does work, try taking just a B complex and potassium with water before bed. Potassium is what they give you at the hospital if you have alcohol poisoning. Then again you could just drink a Revive Vitamin Water. - stou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the English word for "uneasiness following debauchery"?
- megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In my experience, exercise seems to have a strong palliative effect on hangovers, as long as you can overcome the queasiness, vomiting, and pounding headache. It's tough love, but love nonetheless.
- Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@rightofcenter: I have never suffered a conventional hangover, it varies for people. I have never gotten a headache after drinking ever. What i have had is a feeling resemblang to being drunk, but without the mental effects. I feel poorly coordinated but i don't feel euphoric. I have no doubt that you can not get drunk and not have a hangover of some sort; the only way to stave one off is to drink so much water as to dilute the effects alcohol has on your body anyway.
- FDDIcent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I usually drink a lot of tea when I drink alcohol and never get a hangover, both the water and the detox benefits of tea prevent it.
