LSD = Learn Something Different. - diablo75, on 04/06/2008, -1/+25"Progress of human civilization in the area of defining human freedom is not made from the top down. No king, no parliment, no government ever extended to the people more rights than the people insisted upon. And I think we've come to a place with this psychedelic issue. And we have the gay community as a model, and all the other communities, the ethnic communities. We simply have to say, Look: LSD has been around for fifty years now, we just celebrated the birthday. It ain't going away. WE are not going away. We are not slack-jawed, dazed, glazed, unemployable psychotic creeps. We are pillars of society. You can't run your computers, your fashion houses, your publishing houses, your damn magazines, you can do anything in culture without psychedelic people in key positions. And this is the great unspoken of American Creativity. So I think it's basically time to just come out of the closet and go, 'You know what, I'm stoned, and I'm proud.'"

- getbusyliving, on 04/06/2008, -1/+19It would be a real shame to go through an entire life without having a psychedelic experience. For me it was nothing but positive.
- loquax, on 04/06/2008, -0/+11Caught myself on an urban legend. See http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/lsd/lsd_myth5.shtm ...
I just remember having a bad trip years ago in college and everyone telling me it was the strychnine. Do however be careful. - spamzor, on 04/06/2008, -0/+11*****
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -2/+12what crude experiments, like banging on an elephant with a stick
- desu43fnoc, on 04/06/2008, -0/+10Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that it's been common scientific knowledge for quite some time that many psychoactive compounds within the tryptamine structure family (LSD, mescaline, psilocybin [psilocin is the active, metabolized compound]) acted on serotonin receptors.
To me it appears that we still don't know how the compounds effect perception, but merely know that it affects some receptor in the brain that appears to be related to the affected sensory and perceptive activity. Perhaps we'll never quite know. Much like how we know gravity exists and how it propagates from mass, but we still don't know what exactly it is. - OMnicient, on 04/06/2008, -0/+10People aren't afraid of the visual "hallucinations", they're afraid of the ego destruction and intense depersonalization that leads to feeling like any other human on the planet, however rich or poor, and not being "significant" in any way shape or form to the entire human existence overall.
- ghotli, on 04/06/2008, -1/+9Remember: It's not for everyone. Although it did wonders for me.
- subterfuge, on 04/06/2008, -2/+10i did acid once and it was amazing. before i did it, i took colors for granted. now, every once in a while, i notice just how beautiful colors are. i recommend that everyone try lsd if they get the chance. if you're at all concerned about side effects, read the wikipedia article, because there aren't any if you use it in moderation. it's safer than alcohol and even marijuana. it was the best 10$ i've ever spent.
- kleptomaniac, on 04/06/2008, -1/+9First of all, the process of observing a phenotype then creating gene knockouts then recording the changes is a pretty standard practise throughout many fields of biology and knocking out a specific neural receptor is no mean feat. Secondly, I'm fairly sure they realize not all their readers are psychopharmacologists and have simplified the experiment a bit for the casual reader.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -1/+8Title was sort of inaccurate. They still have no idea how they actually work.
- Whackly, on 04/06/2008, -1/+8My hands are huge. They can touch anything but themselves.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7For me, the biggest problem with acid nowadays is where to get it...
- RothenbergXXX, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7I find this article to be good evidence that LSD could safely act as an effective psychiatric drug, if people just weren't afraid of the visuals.
- JustFender, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7I realise now that the comment i was going to make cannot be expressed
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7"In the 16th century medical students had to steal corpses off the gallows and from battlefields in order to do dissections because the church would not allow dissection of corpses to take place. So medical students of that era risked imprisonment in order to obtain corpses so that they could find out how the human body worked. This is the kind of situation that we're in--constipated patriarchal institutions are standing directly astride the forward progress of the human race....
We call these substances consciousness expanding agents, well now, if consciousness does not play a major part in the future history of our species, then what kind of a future history are we talking about? Are we going to become stupider? duller? more animal-like? I don't think so. Consciousness is our defining quality and it must be nourished, encouraged, catalyzed--never more so than now because we have a planet in peril. The entire evolutionary enterprise may rest on the kinds of decisions we make about how we order and carry out our priorities over the next 50 years." - oxdeltaxo, on 04/06/2008, -1/+7Try mushrooms first, they tend to be a little less intense than lsd.
- mKdiR, on 04/06/2008, -2/+8ive always wanted to do acid, one of my ambitions

peaceful, liberating and wonderful things that ever happened to me. I guess if your not willing to let go our usual solipsistic view of life, the universe and everything, that's when it can get scary.
freshly picked mushrooms, good people and being outside surrounded by nature certainly helps. - sodade, on 04/06/2008, -0/+5Ironically, the one time I took LSD, I realized how I was ***** up my life binge drinking and doing speed. I was 17, and since then I haven't been drunk or taken speed. I also haven't done LSD since then either. Maybe I will again one day, maybe not...
- Kymaera, on 04/06/2008, -0/+5One of the most eye-opening, amazing experiences of my life.
I ate two sugar cubes, and it was just complete euphoria for 10 hours.

- alucardx, on 04/06/2008, -0/+4it's all about dose and setting with psychedelics. however it easier to control dose with shrooms when you can deal with grams, instead of LSD where active dose range is in micro-grams.
- firkey, on 04/06/2008, -0/+4"..demystifying the effects of drug abuse." - its "responsible recreational use of hallucinogens", please.
- ronnienunn, on 04/07/2008, -0/+3For those who are considering experimenting with Hallucinogens, by all means do it. Please, just remember to be in a safe environment, like way out in the wilderness, away from civilization. Remember that traditionally these are sacred substances and can be extremely powerful. Our modern industrial lives offer little or no context for the experiences that these substances can induce. Take it slow, be thoughtful and reverent. Know when you have learned enough, know the point at which the substance is no longer required, then simply enjoy your life and your insight. These are are not party drugs, don't let your idiot dumb-***** friends around them. Huxley didn't name his famous book Heaven or Hell for nothing. These are for mature, introspective adults. The world doesn't need another acid casualty. It needs smart, alert, compassionate individuals who seek to make society a better place. So go forth fellow psycho naughts have fun, but be responsible, or suffer the consequences.
- frasierdog, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3it's all a matter of personal preference, and shroom dosing is generally more random anyways
- freqk, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3Montreal here.
- forgiste, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3Never done LSD, but I did DOB once at an all day outdoor concert and I found heaven! Here's a hint: It's all around you right now! You just need eyes to see it.
- WardofHarm, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3if your gonna try it, make sure ur away from society and near nature.
- RothenbergXXX, on 04/06/2008, -0/+2I think you're thinking of phenethylamines; each one from MDMA to the 2C chemicals releases floods of serotonin. Tryptamines are less commonly associated with mood stabilization; even AET or AMT, which pretty much lead tryptamines them in that area, has a much less significant effect on 2A's than most phenethylamines. But hey that's probably why tryptamines are so well known for they're hallucinogenic properties. As this article describes such effects are a separate mechanism from serotonin.
- Sinnic, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2Like utilizing correct spelling and punctuation?
- lukeev, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Very true, we shouldn't advocate mass use, just conscientious and responsible use.
- Azurensis, on 04/06/2008, -1/+3Yeah, strchynine is one of the most bitter compounds we know of. If it were in your acid, you'd be gagging from the awful taste.
- catalysis, on 04/06/2008, -0/+2Serotonin 2A receptors are found in many areas of the brain and they perform many different functions. The important part is that they found the receptors in a specific region of the brain were responsible for the effect.

- jguy584, on 04/06/2008, -0/+2Serotonin is a tryptamine and Dopamine is a phenethylamine.
Both tryps and phens release serotonin and dopamine however. - sgtpppr, on 04/06/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, the 'responsible' part of it is lost on most people. Even in the comments here, people are preaching it as a cure all. There is no quick and easy path to enlightenment and it's certainly not from a synthetic chemical made in a lab. Responsible use of drugs can open up a whole world of new experience and ideas. Abuse of it leads you in the opposite direction. It's also irresponsible to recommend powerful hallucinogens to people who may be susceptible to psychotic or mental break downs. Those with histories of manic, panic, or psychotic episodes can find that it may trigger one. This is the big point that so many forget...there are two schools of drug exploration: the Leary school that said everyone should take drugs and the Huxley school which said they should be respected and treated as a tool not an ends. The Leary students ended up homeless junkies in the Haight and the Huxley students found they had discovered new perspectives that enriched their lives.
- ranalicious, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2just make sure you buy seeds from a farm or place where you know they are organic and don't have any pesticides or poisons on them

- bigd063, on 04/06/2008, -0/+17.5 grams of morning glory seeds ground in a coffee grinder, then mix with food of choice and consume. Prepare to lose ego and all touch with reality.
- lukeev, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Salvia is not the same as LSD or any other of the tryptamines. I would suggest going easy the first time. Curiously it doesn't seem to have tolerance effects like traditional 'psychedelics'. It can be quite gentle and calming. It has strong anti-depressant and stress-relief properties. In much higher doses (40x extract smoked etc) it can be every bit as intense as pure DMT (possibly the most powerful known psychoactive substance). It leaves you feeling 'clean' and uplifted, even if the trip itself is a bit 'edgy'. Relax, go with it, don't give in to amazement. Turn off the phone, put your feet up and pay close attention. Don't post your trip video on youtube!!!
- sgtpppr, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Geez, sounds like all the pseudo-hippy frat boys in their SUVs with grateful dead stickers on the back wearing $300 worth of northface gear blaring Phish as they drive around the quad yelling 'WHAT UP BRAHH??'. There are some things I miss about college and some I certainly don't.
- lukeev, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1It's a fundamental issue of consciousness. We can't understand how consciousness 'works' yet so anything that fundamentally alters and perturbs our conscious perception of reality is a real headache for mechanistic science. What we CAN achieve though; is a scientific and rational model of what these things *tend* to do, what effects they have on society and behavior etc in general. This has been happening since the 50's and we need to keep up the pressure on governments to stop banning research into and eventually the actual use of psychedelics.
