- tech42er, on 11/08/2007, -2/+43Come on. They're not promoting any magic acne cure-all serum, just discussing fatty acids, where they're found, and how they can help acne.
- BenitoMussolini, on 10/24/2007, -3/+41You can get omega-3 oil from,
* avocados
* sesame seeds
* pumpkin seeds
* walnuts
* dark leafy green vegetables (spinach, mustard greens, kale)
* wheat germ oil
* salmon
* sardines
* albacore tuna
* hemp seeds - Bling4u, on 10/22/2007, -14/+45I tried car oil and it didn't work. what now?
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -7/+33ugh STFU - i went to a laser tech and after being on accutune 2x i finally have a clear face. here is the regimen - feel free to try it andp ass it around
MORNING STEPS
1. cetaphil face wash (or generic)
2. Benzoyl peroxide 5% (i use the 10%) *GEL* (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, GET THE GEL NOT THE SOAP. THIS KILLS THE BACTERIA AND DRIES THE SKIN)
3. SUNSCREEN - spf 45
NIGHT -
1. CETAPHIL!!!!!!!! WASH YOUR DAMN FACE
2. RETIN-A (not micro) or tazorac. retin-a is cheap w/o insurance for the generic, like 40-60 for the huge tube.
you will be clear in no time. or go call maxwell aesthetics in tucson az and make an appt for yourself. trust me it works. - reed311, on 10/22/2007, -1/+24Well, I've grown out of my acne stage, but fish oil is a great supplement to take. I hate fish and seafood but taking a fish oil pill is tasteless and is a great source of rare nutrients.
Most bodybuilders supplement their diet with fish oil as it is a great source of 'good' fat. - Malakin, on 10/26/2007, -6/+28I knew this article wasn't going to be very good when I read the first sentence:
"Getting sufficient essential fatty acids is importance in clearing acne."
"olive oil (omega-6 oil)"
Wrong. Olive oil is mostly omega-9. It averages around 10% omega-6 and 70% omega-9.
"The three fatty acids you need daily are omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9"
Wrong. Your body can synthesize omega-9.
"You need more omega 3, fish oil , than omega 6."
Wrong. Researchers argue endlessly about the exact ratio, but the vast majority agree that your body needs more omega-6 than omega-3.
"You can get omega-3 oil from...sesame seeds"
Wrong. Sesame seeds tend to have only trace amounts of omega-3--less than 1%.
I stopped reading at that point. - NoTiG, on 10/31/2007, -3/+23The eskimo's ate a predominately carnivorous diet (which the FDA says you shouldn't) and yet were one of the healthiest races known to modern man. How can this be? Snake oil? Or common sense? The real snake oil men are the dermatologists who do not recommend simple changes in diet to cure acne but rather prescribe drugs which toxify your body.
- catalysis, on 11/02/2007, -2/+18What most people don't realize is that sebum oil is produced in a response to dry (EFA deprived) skin. So what is commonly thought of as "oily" skin is actually dry skin which is overproducing the wrong kind of oil. Astringents and detergents usually exacerbate the problem.
The way I cured my acne is by washing my face in the morning with mild glycerin-based soap, then wash 2 more times in the day with only water. The water-only rinse washes away sebum oil but leaves the good fatty acids which hydrate the skin, in turn making the skin less oily. A chemical regimen may work, but it basically makes you addicted to the chemicals because as soon as you stop, your skin will break out in oiliness. - Zippo, on 10/21/2007, -0/+16This is actually very true. Taking something like a cod liver oil capsule every day does wonders for you. It's a huge source of omega-3 stuff and full of Vitamin A and D. If you've ever been on a drug such as Accutane, you've pretty much just giving yourself a daily overdose of Vitamin A...
Between the fatty acids and vitamin A, it's a great way to fight off acne. Just... don't ever bite into the capsule... it's not exactly the nicest taste in the world x_x - HunterTV, on 11/08/2007, -23/+37I hear snake oil works just as well.
- missflibbles, on 10/24/2007, -0/+14Wow, I'm completely disgusted that an online pharmacy would sell isotretinoin or even tretinoin. Isotretinoin is one hell of a potent teratogen, so much so that women are required to be on two forms of birth control and take regular pregnancy tests to be eligible to take it. I can't speak for the teratogenic effects of tretinoin, since I'm not sure whether it's affects have been studied or not.
- Caster, on 10/22/2007, -0/+12I suppose that all depends on what you eat.
- buddyw, on 10/21/2007, -4/+16Also, pray go to church on Sundays and exercise. All of these things will help you feel like you can do something about the problem which is important for some people.
- SOhp101, on 10/21/2007, -0/+11Careful what you read online... this site is designed to sell a product and will say anything to get you to purchase their product.
Omega 3 fatty acids definitely have their benefits and the best sources that you can get it from is fish (especially Salmon) and certain nuts/seeds (like flaxseed oil that is fresh [refrigerated--do NOT use the capsules]). Krill oil might be a good source but flaxseed oil tastes the best of the three (has a light nutty taste if fresh and refrigerated).
Don't bother with Omega 6 fatty acids because they are very common and are present in nearly all protein/fat food sources such as beef, nuts, eggs, poultry.
Omega 9s are not essential (non EFA) because the body can use other oils to make 'em, so focus more on Omega 3s. - DimitriVetra, on 10/21/2007, -2/+13I think for once, this is a comment that sounds sarcastic but really isn't. I've heard about snake oil as well.
- Leo21k, on 10/22/2007, -2/+1210g of Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin b5) a day helped me get rid of my acne. It made my skin less oily which resulted in me breaking out less. Google it for info if you want... worked for me (after trying everything else resulted in failure) is all I have to say
- starf, on 10/21/2007, -1/+10Omega-3s are accepted as good for you regardless of their affect on acne, so it probably wouldn't hurt and won't cost much to try it.
You might actually want to do some research on the subject before assuming it's *****. - urby86, on 10/24/2007, -0/+8Another alternative is flax seed oil. Doesn't have that fishy taste but has pretty much the same amount of essential fatty acids. I cook some in with my eggs in the morning and mix some in a protein shake at night.
- NoTiG, on 10/21/2007, -1/+9Keep in mind that the Omega 3's from vegetable sources are not true omega 3's but only precursors. They have to be converted , sort of like how beta carotene has to be converted first... to vitamin A... which takes certain minerals and vitamins and is not equal in quality to their true animal sources.
Watch your diet and do not blame genetics. You get acne because of genetics... the same as you cry because of genetics. You couldn't cry if it weren't for genetics.. but the real reason you may cry is not because of genetics it is because of some emotional or physical reason. Similarly acne is a sign of a deeper issue. Do not just try to mask the symptom with some topical pharmaceutical concontion. Even a natural topical concoction is not addressing the deeper issue. Try changing your diet first by giving up the usually two most common culprits for allergens... Gluten and dairy. You will know after two weeks if that has any effect. Next watch what fats you take... omega 6's like evening primrose oil are still good fats ... you may not get even as many omega 6 as you think because heating and cooking destroys them.
If you are looking to change your diet try natural.. time tested diets of traditional fats that many older societies knew that kept them healthy. For instance butter is actually healthy. Margarine... our technological "advancement" is an abomination and the worst possible fat you can eat. Coconut oil is good. Plant based oils extracted become rancid easily, and oxidize under heat unlike saturated fats like coconut, and butter or even lard. Just try to get them from grass fed (free range) sources. Some diets to try: makers diet, body ecology, nourishing traditions, perricones clear skin prescription (or something) etc. Look up weston price.org - falconX, on 10/22/2007, -1/+9I wish this regime worked, I tried that for years when I was younger, used the tazorac TWICE a day according to my dermitologist, along with washing my face with SpectroGel (also by recommendation of the dermitologist).
Worked for a bit, until the tazorac dried my skin out to the point where my face was falling apart... then I would have to stop using it for a week, and I'd be back to square one again. Since then, I've given up, I'm 22, still have some acne, but don't really care, I've got more issues with ingrown hairs than pimples... - Mizzike, on 10/21/2007, -0/+7Other remedies for acne:
Accutane worked wonders for me (when my dumb ass remembered to take it) but gave me incredible side effects like bloody noses and chapped lips.
Doxycycline works well (again, when taken regularly) but not as well as accutane.
For me, those creams weren't worth a damn; they just bleached my shirts and made my face sticky, then dry, but ultimately sensitive. I stopped those a long time ago.
Hope that helps someone. Oh, and I've noticed that Tea Tree Oil, when rubber over the face, works well at shrinking larger pimples. Not really great as an overall treatment, but certainly works for those one-offs. - TridenTBoy, on 10/21/2007, -0/+7Yeah I take fish oil pills too, but sadly they make me burp a lot and then I smell fish oil bad.
- AceLy, on 10/21/2007, -0/+6And "benefits" of water include drowning.
- starf, on 10/21/2007, -0/+6It can also help with hairloss.
- slothlovechunk, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6So the solution was worse than the problem?
- imikedaman, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6"you have nothing to lose!"
Except a lot of time, money, and hope. :( - mp3dog, on 10/24/2007, -2/+7Accutane (isotretinoin) can be very dangerous and requires VERY CLOSE MONITORING by the prescribing physician. It is not something that you can just medicate yourself with.

- TridenTBoy, on 10/21/2007, -2/+7Great article! Really helpful comments too.
- bremstrong, on 10/21/2007, -0/+5Chinese water snake oil is a rich source of Alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) at 20%.
It is certainly most ironic that the pejorative term (snake oil) now used to belittle nutritional approaches to disease was probably effective nutritional remedy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_oil
"Alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), sometimes improperly shortened to linolenic acid, is found in great abundance in flax, hemp seed, canola, soybean, walnut oils, as well as dark green leaves. Flax seed is considered to be the richest source, containing over 50% of its fatty acids as LNA. Chia and candlenut oils contain about 30%. Hemp seed oil contains about 20%. Pumpkin seed oil varies from as much as 15% to none. Canola contains up to 10%. Walnut oil varies from 3% to 11%. Soybean oil also varies from 5% to 7%. Dark green leaves contain only a little oil, but what there is, is over 50% LNA. For those so inclined, Chinese water snake oil is also a rich source of LNA at 20%."
from http://www.innvista.com/health/nutrition/fats/omeg ... - WiskyDrinker, on 10/21/2007, -0/+4Agreed it worked well for me, but don't forget all the nasty possible side effects. That *****'s heavy duty. I mean one side ffect is hair loss!
- skyfire1, on 10/22/2007, -3/+7Good for you. Now go read your Bible more or God will give it back to you.
- KingGorilla, on 10/22/2007, -2/+6I did not know my acne was disorganized. So this thing can sort them into like a grid like shape on my face?
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -1/+5did you try it with the cetaphil and benzoyl? those are KEY to be honest with you, i can skip the retin-A/tazorac but i cant skip either of those. the benzoyl as a GEL stays on your face and doesnt let the acne live. next time you get a pimple, put some benzoyl 10% gel on it from walgreens, just spot treat it. itll be gone quick. you have nothing to lose!
- phenom2k7, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4You can also get lead, mercury and other pollutants from some of those foods you've listed.
- Livebold, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5Did anyone else notice that this website sells fish oil supplements? I'm just sayin...
- Necho, on 10/22/2007, -1/+5For the most effective regime try acne.org, they are one of the best resources for acne information, product reviews by other people with acne, and community. Three main products you will want to use are cleanser/moisturizer/benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide has been shown to be the most effective acne solution for anyone with mild to moderate acne (however, it is drying and can actually make acne look worse initially). It works quickly for many people with mild acne ands takes a couple months to clear up someone with moderate acne. Acne.org sells the best benzoyl peroxide money can buy bar none (good price and with no fragrances, etc.). Its formulation was directed by the sites owner who was an adult acne sufferer and holds very high standards for his products. There is also a good cleanser and moisturizer which are very gentle but some use a different product in their individual regime. Personally I find the cleanser to be the best out there but I use Aveeno's Ultra Calming moisturizer.
- Livebold, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3i know. no references and the website is SELLING supplements. This article should be buried and removed.
- tywolff, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4I'm 24... if I booze on say, a friday night, I have horrid acne by sunday. I get no acne in any other situation. So, I advise against alcohol if you want clear skin. Just my helpful tip for the day.
- TridenTBoy, on 10/24/2007, -1/+4You forgot Fish Oil supplements. :-P
- gak001, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3Maybe you should try drinking gasoline. That ought to fix all your other problems too. :-)
- gcnaddict, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3We know.
- inactive, on 10/24/2007, -2/+5And while you're at it, dont' drink milk if you don't have to. It's unhealthy and you never know what those bovine growth hormones will do to you. As an alternative to milk, drink juice with calcium or rice milk, and soy milk (not for guys because increases estrogen).
- gak001, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3Keep in mind that everyone's skin is different. What works for one doesn't necessarily work for everyone. That being said, Cetaphil is awesome because when you dry out your skin, your face doesn't know the difference so your sebacious glands respond to make up the difference and produce more oil. That's why exclusively using over the counter benzoyl peroxide products can actually exacerbate the problem. I'm actually really surprised your dermatologist let you use benzoyl peroxide while on Accutane, but like I said, every situation is different.
- emmeron, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3Omega-3s from plants are used in the body to build the omega-3s you get directly from fish, so it is far more efficient to take it in from Salmon than from any plant (or "omega-3 eggs" that are from chickens fed flax).
- Robozilla, on 10/22/2007, -2/+5Fish oil is just vendor trash. It's like 1 silver... BS.
- Spikito, on 10/22/2007, -4/+7I stopped masturbating, cleared right up
- Necho, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3What it comes down to is that there is no single cure for acne. Fish oil is good for you but believe me, it is no cure or treatment by itself. Accutane can work but is a very serious drug with some nasty side effects and is pretty much only for clinically moderate-severe and severe cases where nothing else is working (you may want to look at what doctors consider severe acne because many with mild or moderate acne think they have it much worse than they really do). Antibiotics may work in the short term but bacteria become immune after a while so antibiotics are better to help a teenager get over a bad acne period in their life than cure the acne altogether. I personally would not use Retin-A which is a prescription topical gel that is actually based in part on what is used in accutane. I have heard many more horror stories with Retin-A than success stories (I can't even remember a REAL success story) so it is a waste of time and money by how I see it. For people with very mild acne, over the counter drugs can often help but they also often have high levels of irritants, such as alcohol and fragrances, and comodogenic ingredients which can make things worse. Proactive is no exception to this and is a perfect example of how, to companies, marketing is more important than formulating a good acne solution. Their benzoyl peroxide wash is the worst; there is little benefit to using the wash then turning around and using the benzoyl peroxide gel. In addition, the wash has exfoliating beads which can irritate the hell out of a sensitive area such as the face.
