- prelude, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Warning, don't just trust this article, the information contrasts with other safety guides I've read.

Only if you're using the stupid default color scheme in Windows, or if you're using a Mac. You don't have to, you know:
http://GetAmbitious.com/colorscheme - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I've found that turning the brightness on the LCD way, way down does wonders for my eye strain. Right now its set at 14%. The "normal" brightness setting really does seem like im looking into a lightbulb after a while.
Your desktop color scheme doesn't really matter if you are looking at a white web page or word processor full-screen. - suprman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Digg dark grey redesign: http://userstyles.org/style/show/1559
- Sasabune, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4In Soviet Russia, the vision ruins YOU!
- CrankyPants, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16What?! No masturbation jokes yet?
- ISIfunded911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Catalysis, after years of burning eyes (before getting a LCD), I found that high contrast and low brightness (the setting I believed was the best) was far more painful than high brightness and low contrast, which has been my favorite setting for a long time. My LCD is always at 50% brightness, and I change the contrast all day long, between 6% at night and 30% if I watch pictures on dpreview of flickr.
I also changed all the default settings in KDE and Firefox, to replace all the whites with greys, and to use large fonts, which allows me to be farther from the screen.
Also try to protect your screen AND your eyes from direct light, even at a low angle (like a window to your right and a little behind you). Especially your eyes! Put something between your eyes and this light. Don't be afraid of being ridiculous: for example if wearing a hat works for you. Burning eyes are more painful than ridicule!
All eyes are different, so take the time to test different settings, each one for a few days, to find out what works best for you.
And don't forget to save that article: it is a very good read! - CrankyPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Tip for programmers: Alter your IDE to a light on dark scheme. I use the Borland Classic: light yellow on dark blue -- it really helps with eye strain.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Light text on dark blue is just what got modded down, seven posts up.
Why continue to use such a stupid color scheme (black text on a white background) when you can change it? Look at these "workarounds." This is like turning your stereo all the way up, complaining that it's too loud, and then putting in earplugs. Moronic.
- HairyFotr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11My eyes hurt from reading that article... :)
But i guess it was worth it... there are some good tips for reducing eye-strain that i'll (probaly) follow from now on.- facelogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Mine too... I'd expect an article on eyesight to use a bigger font.
- alexgg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You can always press Ctrl and scrollwheel... I can see a lot better now.
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or diagonal motion down-right using mouse gestures ;-)
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"Probaly"?
- iSeeUToo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+0After I've personally restored my eyesight back to perfect again - and that's totally AWESOME (from -4.50 & -4.75) with eye exercises, I do the following to keep my eyes happy; when I work with a pc, read a book, or when you I'm doing anything else that requires me to stare at it for a long time, especially close up, I just look around the room and into the distnace, now and again. If you do that, your eyesight will NOT get worse. Otherwise, it WILL - it's only normal, only common sense. If you do start noticing your eyesight worsening however, then you can start doing more exercises - move your eyes up, down, left, right, look onto your nose etc - do this for a couple of mins once every hour or so, then close your eyes and relax. If you put your hands over your face, so that your eyes are right in the middle of your palms, with no light getting through, and stay like this for a minimum of 3 mins, then your eyes will relax and you'll see a huge improvement for a moment - every day you'll notice a slight improvement in your vision, right until the moment when you fully restore it. That's the principle for you, in a nutshell.
- cr4ft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The picture of the first guy in the article is hilarious...he looks like he just finished getting buzzed

- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A lot of (or even, a little) schooling can also lead to better spelling.
- groovechamp30, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The font size is tiny, I only read the headers as they were the only thing that wasn't too small and painful to read.
- dezertrat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Ctrl + (firefox)
- mcraigw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5
Or hold down Ctrl and move your mouse wheel. That works in a variety of browsers including Firefox and IE... UNLESS the website has specified font sizes as fixed pixel values.

- markfulton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Informative read. Thanks.

Before you all digg me down, it was a joke. I too have bad eyesight, and i really ought to go see the "eye doctor" and get an eye test. - donotdigg, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1/crosses fingers

- iMoth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1in soviet russia, eyesight save you!
- dstz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Buy a good 100hz CRT. OH, wait, they don't exist anymore. Well, wait for the next proper technology I guess.
- strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use a laptop (one of the suggestions in this article) as my primary computer but I find that I get neck strain from my posture of looking down at it on a desk. I plug-in a external LCD monitor at home but I don't have access to that most of the day. Can anyone suggest a laptop ergonomics link?
- tchonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not a bad article, but the greatest advice is to always keep moving. Believe it or not, your eyes are most relaxed when they are moving. Humans were not designed to stay in one place all day, we are hunters who are supposed to be in constant motion looking and scanning (with the eyes) for food. Also make sure you move your neck -- a stiff neck can can cause deterioration of the vision. Another tip is to centralize. This means to only concentrate on a specific spot that you can see well, then shift your vision to the next object and so on. The reasoning behind this is that in the eye, there is a point called the fovea centralis, where there is the greatest concentration of cones (the receptors that pick up light). Because the fovea is so small, humans can only see a very small point clearly. It is through movement that we can see the whole picture, rather than just small bits of it. And always remember to blink!
- dashham98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks. Along the same lines, I like to periodically look out of a window (while working on the computer) to change the focus.
- ferggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I found it ironic that the text on the page said not to use small fonts, but it was written in a very small font.
Reading that article strained my eyes and gave me neck pain by making me lean in to read it, since when I tried to increase the font size, it didn't work.
Some good tips though - ragboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My eye sight was deteriorating slightly, and an eye doctor gave me some great advice. Watch TV while I work. I am a programmer. The idea is, put a TV several feet farther away than your monitor. Enough of a distance, that you have to change focus when you look at the TV. The doctor said your eyes go bad, when you don't EXERCISE them enough, by altering your focus. So since then, I have always had a TV in my office, with something on that is not too distracting, like the science channel or something. A few times a minute, I look over at the TV and I focus at the greater distance, and look back at my monitor. Since I have done this, my prescription has not changed for the last 10 years. Works for me. Also a great way for me to write off my 37" inch LCD mounted on the wall, and comcast cable!
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Blue Blockers. I don't care. It feels good and my eyes don't hurt any more since I started using them. No more headaches either.
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ahhh. sure my eyes have gotten some what ***** up. but that's why they invented glasses. ya it sucks, but it better than driving off the road.
- Plastic3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A tip for posture, check out the "Life Chair" by Knoll for your work chair. I can sit in it all day long, and the back has a spring tension that allows you to lean back without pulling any levers. When you lean back and stop, it will stay until you lean forward. Lovin' it!
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I refuse to take advice from someone who calls an optician an "eye doctor".
- AndiSue50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, you can read this because it doesn't call an optician an "eye doctor"... opticians aren't eye doctors- but OPTOMETRISTS are! And don't even try to say we're not... how many years you spending in school? B/c I'm spending 8... and do a heck of a lot more than ppl give us credit for.
- seaeaglesrule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A really useful article. Back in 1998 my boss recommended that I change the background colour for documents etc from white to a pale blue-grey. It really made a big difference.
- stevecole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been using a black text on blue-grey scheme for the past 15 years of my digital life. It baffles me how people forever tolerate the offensive contrast of #000000 upon #FFFFFF.
- Weirdguy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its not about this but, when i move my eye far diagonal hurts, its going away, but i was wanting some explanation cause it was only one of my eyes.
- cxzsaq, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1too late!
