- burningbush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well said. I think the greatest challenge facing humanity is the curbing of the desire for power. Until we can do that, human suffering will continue indefinitely.

- ssmith2k3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6yep, a nobel at least. cutting edge stuff...
- justananomaly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Stop digging me down you chinese digg farming *****! But don't take that out of context please, I was having a cold emotional state moment.
- LaughingMan11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6They'd bottle up their sexual and emotional energy for 7 years and then fight each other to the death in an orgyiastic manner? That sounds grand.
- IanDWD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Learning to empathize with people who make errors when in a "hot" state is one thing, but it would be far worse if we excused behaviors simply because of this state. When do you think 95% of bad behavior happens? Unless you're a sociopath, when you hurt another person you're going to be hot under the collar.
What the article fails to focus on are those millions of people who, when faced with the same hot emotions, don't get violent, don't cheat on their wives, don't have that extra cookie etc. This is what it means to have character.
When someone succumbs in these hot states, which admittedly everyone has to one degree or another, it means they lacked some mechanism to control their own behavior, whether that be a strict personal code, a supportive outside influence, or simply a reminder of what the consequences of their actions would be. I don't know anyone who hasn't succumbed to a hot state urge, I have for many times, but I sure as hell respect those who can control themselves more than those who might use the excuse "I was just really mad" or "I was just really horny." The moment we stop expecting personal responsibility and control from others is the moment we will see it slip away.
Now there should be allowances made for addictive behaviors, which by definition are the urges which cannot be controlled by willpower and must be prevented long before they arise, e.g. Not taking that first drink which would mean you WOULD have a second, and a third. - LittleDas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Since Vitter was mentioned prominently in the article, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and call this sarcasm.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Although the main premise of the article sounds lucid, i believe that the first few examples do not fit into the hot/cold emotion assumption. people in power have something that some of us 'normal' people have in smaller doses: arrogance.
it is arrogance that allows a person to slander the sexually promiscuous, but turn around and do the exact same thing, justified by the thought that they, somehow, are more worthy of that release.
it is also arrogance for a world leader to set one nation and its people up on a pedestal and believe that the suffering of other (lesser, in their opinion) people groups is somehow worth it to ensure the safety and/or comfort of their own nation. - slapthemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yeah just what i always felt and now its proven.......
- llamagorama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My dad's like that and makes it impossible to watch movies with him. Whenever it's a tense or scary moment and the movie characters freak out and does something impulsively, he'll just exclaim 'OH COME ON, I WOULDN'T DO THAT, THEY SHOULD'VE-' ect. I have to keep reminding hm that a, it's a movie and b, he's sitting in a LazyBoy, in a big house in suburbia and not on a spaceship with giant aliens after him, or whatever.
- CourtesyFlush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is why I refuse to get emotional about politics, religion and schoolhouse pooh flinging on teh intarwebs..
The only people who deserve my emotions are family members, very close friends and worthy females with deliciously round bottoms. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is why young people should stay out of politics, the bleeding heart is easy to manipulate.
"If you are not a liberal at 20 you have no heart, if you are still a liberal at 40 you have no brain." - javip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1religion and logic and common sense are contradictions
in fact, they could quite possibly be the biggest contradictions on this planet - ONELOVE23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I like turtles too!
- LazaroPizana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0There is a sacred horror about everything grand. It is easy to admire mediocrity and hills; but whatever is too lofty, a genius as well as a mountain, an assembly as well as a masterpiece, seen too near, is appalling.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5"Many health resolutions, for example, are made when people are in a cold state. But while they may intellectually grasp the temptation of a potato chip or a cigarette, they do not appreciate in advance how visceral the desire can be -- which is why many resolutions fail when put to the test....."When we are dealing with our vices, we are shortsighted, impulsive and make ridiculous sacrifices to satisfy our vices. But when we see other people succumbing to their vices, we think, 'How pathetic.' " (from the article)
- justananomaly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Right on man, right on. (Make it a bit shorter next time), but right on.
- CliftonKohan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking of them.
- Aticper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Well, it would be a heck of a lot more entertaining than modern politics.
C'mon. Who wouldn't want to see george bush and hillary clinton fight to the death? - Aticper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Please tell me that you're joking.
- PA2beHappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You are making sense. Too much attention in the news & political sectors is given to bad behavior instead of learning skills like neuro-linguistic Programming & the life success club to change our thoughts to attract the good things into our life.
