- ZakNicola, on 05/08/2008, -0/+23I need to stop smoking.
- Bukowsky, on 05/08/2008, -1/+14and start riding a bicycle.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -3/+16This article covers a lot and speculates on teh bigger picture of genetic influence on health. Very interesting read.
- princedynamite, on 05/08/2008, -0/+11masturbating is considered cardio.
- aussiejan, on 05/08/2008, -1/+11OK, but I'm going to need a lot more DVDs.
- Evocati, on 05/08/2008, -0/+10LIfe is like a poker game. You are dealt your hand and have to play the cards right. Some people are dealt a bad hand and unfortunately have to fold early in the game. Others can bluff their way through a while with a decent hand. The people living to be 100+ were dealt a full house or higher.
So I believe it is a combination of luck and doing the right things. - Bukowsky, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9I would be inclined to say that it's a combination of genetics, diet & active lifestyle.... My understanding, is that If you do alot of cardio exercise (which this guy supposedly did til he was 102) it helps to keep your heart healthy, your overall body in shape. Plus, you add on the fact that he ate a well-balanced diet, and the genetic's factor. I can see why he lived a long life!
- veloscaper, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8you should know better, Little Debbie's is poison.
- pokebud, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7My Grandpa is 95 and all he eats is Hot Dogs, Sees Candy without nuts and any sort of soft cake(s) like donoughts. He was a Postman for 35 years so maybe all the walking helped, and he has a super slow heart rate of 42
- imeddy, on 05/08/2008, -2/+9> What causes long life?
Not dying helps. - azznine9682, on 05/08/2008, -2/+8So smoking pot, cigarettes, masturbating at every chance, sitting on the couch drinking a 12 pack a night, eating red meat, and anything with Little Debbie's isn't a good way to make it to 100?
- Cattywampus, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6I thought the secret to long life was eating yogurt, like in those old Dannon TV commercials. Some old folks swear that drinking a shot of Jack Daniel's every day is responsible for their long life.
Maybe you need to pour the JD into your yogurt for maximum longevity? - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5I've actually seen people smoking while riding a bike... not long after, confusion sets in.
- flashback99, on 05/08/2008, -2/+7***** increasing lifespan, the planet is overpopulated already.
- cdigioia, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4 "a combination of genetics, diet, & active lifestyle" - Yes, of course it's SOME combination. That's terribly vague & not helpful. The question is what are the relative weightings, 90% genetics, 10% genetics? The difference is huge for a person's decision making.
- Frost9999, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Since you've sorted it out, I guess we can stop researching :)
- Masterful1, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4yeah well if a bus came careening down a hillside, and at that particular moment in time you were standing at the bottom of it, completely unaware of what was going on above you. would you not consider it unlucky that said bus hits you and kills you instantly, and would you not also consider said event would effect your longevity? luck has a lot to do with how old you get before you kick the bucket.
- Andrwmorph, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4I bet I'm gonna croak before half that. CURSE YOU LOADED STEAKHOUSE BURGER!
- flashback99, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4I learnt from digg that some people really should not live that long. I also learnt that your link has nothing to do with the topic.
- inspektor, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4great article. I like it!
- DeathfireD, on 05/08/2008, -2/+5Drink lots of water, eat several small meals/snacks a day, and be sure to walk any chance you get. This should help you lose some weight. But then again your body is probably going through tobacco withdrawal and it's not actually fat building up. Give it some time, you body will adjust at some point if you eat healthy.
- archer75, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Our neighbor is healthy, exercises regularly, eats all the right foods. She had a heart attack in her 50's.
My Grandfather smokes. All his life. Like a chimney. He's had heart bypasses. Hasen't been to a doctor in the past 7 years. He is now 91.
It's mostly genetic. The amount of cholesterol in your body is 90% from genetics. Your body naturally produces it and diet has very little to do with it. - gottsegnet, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Quite interesting. I think it is a combination of a lot of factors. Annoying when the healthiest people you know are doing everything "wrong" though.
- kraftyballs, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Haha, I've seen people wear one of those yellow Livestrong bracelet while smoking a cigarette. My head almost 'sploded.
- ilves7, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3I don't care about lifespan as much as quality of that lifespan. I don't want to be 200 years old and so decrepit i can't move or think anymore.
- Snyz, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Genetics determine a person's potential age, but lifestyle determines whether it will be reached.
- herebejames, on 09/17/2008, -0/+3Great article, longevity is a fascinating area. I think its incredible we are even half as close to justifiable debates on these kind of things. But I still think its criminal that the technology being developed for current generations in developed countries will probably be non existent in africa especially for the foreseeable future.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Lifestyle(sport+diet), genes, environment.
- Frost9999, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3If you increase lifespan it will be much easier to increase the healthy part than the decrepit part.
- BurningSky, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4I don't really want to live much past 85. At some point, I'll stop being an independent person and I'll assistance just to stay alive. I don't want my life experience to be limited by the decrepitude of old age. What's the point..?
- Myonosken, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Stop spamming your ***** link in every topic.
- Sicarius, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Good luck? Someone has to be on the far right end of the curve.
- Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3That's why we have to migrate to other planets even without life extension. Overpopulation is a problem no matter what, not only against life extension per se. There can even be (if we don't possess the technology to migrate to other planets yet) that those who take life extension medicine should not be allowed to have more than one kid, and in the case of radical life extension no kids at all, in which case you'll have to choose between your life and your kids', a fair choice if you ask me, in the absence of an alternative.
Having said that Aubrey de Grey has no conclusive evidence that his methods can even work, I would be more interested to here form him by the time he'll have some lab results to base his positions..... - whataboutdave, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2While I recognize that keeping healthy helps a great deal, it's def in the genes. My family lives well into their 90s as well irrespective of their lifestyle differences.
- fr3ddie, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4Longevity is not based on LUCK. gimme a freakin break.
- woofers07, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2me too....and drinking... and drugs too i suppose. Funny thing is I'm still more athletic than most, must be the genes.
- Cattywampus, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2One key to longevity is "a lack of stress and regular physical activity."
That would seem to rule out at least 85% of Americans... - Cattywampus, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2"Longevity is not based on LUCK"
Sometimes it is. Some people die of cancer relatively young even though they exercise, eat right, avoid smoking and excess drinking, etc. - jp12380, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Actually it very well may be. They have done multiple studies that show people that are more athletic are exposed to more testosterone while in the womb which makes their cardiovascular system more efficient. I'm not sure if when you are exposed to testosterone it changes your genes or just changes something else.
- antlerboy, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2same
- captspaulding, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Both.
- Cattywampus, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I agree... what's the point of living to 114 if you can't remember what you were doing five minutes ago, you have to pee every five minutes, and it takes you a half hour to cross the street?
- smokeymcdank, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Actually it is more important that he (and I for that matter quit). Never having had started would certainly be nice, but what can you do now.
I did quit about a year ago, for about a year and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I couldn't sleep, I was pissed off all the time, I was eating like a full-time digger. It was terrible. Then I started again...lame.
Mark Twain: "As an example to others, and not that I care for moderation myself, it has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep and never to refrain when awake."

"Quitting smoking is easy, I've done it hundreds of times" - peterinjapan, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2In other news, do they make Ice Cream Ho-Ho's yet? It seems to me this would be a great product.
- elfprince13, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1that's older than Yoda or The Doctor. I'm pretty sure I don't want to be that old unless I get super powers too.
- ZombieKiss, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1^ dugg ^ for river city ransom.
- 47f0, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Geres, genes, genes. We cremated my wife's step-dad last year (yes, he was dead) at the age of 94. He was sharp and agile until the last few weeks. Pops smoked cigars and chewed tobacco. He drank brandy. He ate anything that didn't move faster than him, and his favorite breakfast was eggs over easy, and pork chops with a lot of fat - "Tastes like damn shoe leather.", he'd say if it was too lean. His father was killed at a young age in a farming accident, but his grandfather, a former slave, died at 105 - they found him peacefully laying under a shade tree with the two buckets of water he had just fetched from the creek near his home.
The best way to live a long time is to have parents who lived a long time - and never play cards with guys named after any state. - celkin, on 05/08/2008, -3/+4dugg for "teh" :)
- mescad, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2I'd love to live to 95 and beyond, but not if it means that all I get to eat are hot dogs, yuck!
