- mcwattersm, on 01/14/2009, -1/+49That wasn't obvious?
I was expecting this to be some big breaking news from the Onion... - Sisko41, on 01/14/2009, -1/+38They had to do studies? my parents would always just tell me when I was sick that it was because of my lack of sleep.
- tyrulz, on 01/14/2009, -3/+28no *****..buried, front page really?
- mattisallama, on 01/14/2009, -0/+19Cold may prevent a good night's sleep, study finds
- Tophillious, on 01/14/2009, -4/+20this stupid *****'s only on the front page because of power digger. buried
- GeorgeTirebiter, on 01/14/2009, -2/+17Yet another meaningless correlational study.
- Slacker1031, on 01/14/2009, -1/+16in related news, taking care of your body is good for you. also, is 7 Big Macs too many Big Macs? Tune in at 11 for the answer, and more.
- kabifff, on 01/14/2009, -2/+14Uh..... no *****?
- shyner, on 01/14/2009, -3/+10Actually, I've been helping with this study for about two years, and even I agree like most of you are saying that it's still kind of common sense. That doesn't mean it isn't worth researching more about though. This article doesn't really delve too much into the finer points of the study.
- aubinhick990, on 01/14/2009, -4/+11Is this that surprising? ...buried for common sense
- Burninate35, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6Same with my parents. Your immune system functions much better with more sleep. This has been known for years.
- jba68, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5no,***** keeps you healthy too
- mrhedges, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4lovemorgul's popular ratio: 45%
This could have been a study on whether or not ice cubes melt at room temperature and it would have made the front page. Pathetic. - rknicker, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4As long as you sleep till 11, it's fine.
- Cowicide, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4In other news, a lack of sleep may make colds more likely.
- zjbird, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Oh, I always thought they told me to get lots of rest when I was sick because they didn't want me around them..
- drewfer, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Like this isn't ***** obvious already.
- badfishmedia, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3I totally buy into this. If I am feeling a cold coming on or are around a bunch of sick people, I go to bed early, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and take more hot showers. (I just like 'em and they are relaxing.) I get sick 0 -1x per year in the Northeast US which can be a hotbed of illness in the winter.
- meandnips, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3mine, too. Who knew Mom's were right once in awhile??
- tgc1, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Strange. I rarely get colds, but I also rarely get a decent nights sleep. Matter of fact, i'm having insomnia right now.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3That guy has a mean underbite.
- PencilPanda, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3I don't need a study to tell me that I need to sleep more! Hell, there's just 24 hours in a day!!
- stjoad, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3What about those of us who sleep between 7-8 hours? Not special enough to be part of the study?
- ckedge, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Oh hell yeah. Also, make certain you get three solid meals if you think a cold is coming on. If you eat nothing but sugar and crap - boom, that cold will surely take hold.
- jasonh1234, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2My mom told me that many times over 20 years ago. OLD!
- diemunkiesdie, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Oh no, not another one of those articles that mistakes correlation for causation...
- Collecto, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Seven Big Macs?!?!?!?!?!?! Are You F***ING CRAZY???!?
- Murdats, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2even newer study finds that journalists append study finds to a otherwise garbage article to make people pay attention to it, even if a study doesn't exist, is crap, not science or is just one 'scientist' or varying credibility making a statement
- mcwattersm, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3Sounds like he gets to sleep all day.
- Remelox, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2I can say from personal experience, 7 Big Macs is not enough.
- zjbird, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3Yeah, cause every doctor is out to get you.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3That's because you weren't sick.
No really, gtfo. - tomjthayer, on 01/14/2009, -3/+5Newer study determines that ridiculous amounts of time and money are wasted every year on researching ways to avoid the common cold instead of actually curing it.
- HamstaMan, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Just because you'll pee out a lot of vitamins doesn't mean that you aren't using more of them than usual by taking supplements. Also, believe it or not. Many foods can actually be lacking in vitamins due to the way many foods are processed these days.
Here's a nice article on the matter.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v04n2 ...
I'd rather just pay a few euro for vitamins every other week. Water soluble vitamins taste better than water and I'm no fan of sodas. - zjbird, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2it was a ***** family guy reference..damnit
- johnsawyercjs, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2shyner: since you've been helping with this study, your colleagues may be interested to know that, contrary to what Cohen stated for the article, biological mechanisms that help explain the link between sleep and cold symptoms have been known for some time. Most of our day's growth hormone release occurs while we sleep, and neurotransmitters are replenished when we sleep. Both of these are necessary for keeping our immune systems working. I'm curious if your colleagues read any existing papers on this subject before commencing their research. I'm not altogether impugning their skills, but I'm surprised nothing about these facts were mentioned in the article.
- bieber, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3Actually, they very may well. At the very least, they exhibit some very intelligent behaviors as a colony...
- jeremyadam, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2you don't say?
- hazyeight, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2I guess a lack of sleep just destroys the center of your brain responsible for sentence structure. Just joking, I'm just jealous that you can even function on 3 hours of sleep in a night.
- X9001, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2So staying up till 3 and getting high as hell is bad for me?
- pathetik, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2No ***** Sherlock
- drhouse, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2This just in: drinking water may prevent dehydration!
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Walking around bare foot and even in chilly weather works for me.
- deema1, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3A good night's sleep might prevent a cold what? Why not just give us that important information?
- suavek2000, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2take your vitamins , drink green tea, exercise a bit and you'll be fine ........And remember to take your Calcium together with magnesium
- Jeremyz0r, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3Will it prevent an erection?
- truancy, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1My god this sounds like a grade school science project.
- HamstaMan, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1I know, just putting that in there.
- zjbird, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2Actually, it's usually unprofessional to say that A absolutely causes or prevents B. Just because a person sleeps a lot doesn't mean they are immune to sickness.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1dur brain!
