Digg users are lonely, too.
A match in heaven.

But sometimes they don't make sense

- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+66How come every time someone under the age of 18 does something in this country it the fault of a celebrity or video game . Here's a thought maybe the girl suicide rate is raising because of bad parenting.
- Nerotique, on 10/10/2007, -1/+50The rate as a percentage has gone up for girls. Guess what? That's not the whole story. Girl's suicide rates are still less than 100 per year whereas boys suicide rates are almost 1500 per year. I don't see that making headlines.
- Unlgued, on 10/10/2007, -3/+46Time to stop banning parenting.
- dweeb79, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39Depression + “How could this happen to me?” = Suicide
- gllopc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36"Ropes don't kill people. People kill people."
- kaelyiesta, on 10/10/2007, -8/+40That was in poor taste,
since this articles about
girls killing themselves.
My hypocrisy for the day. - bightchee, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33Countdown to someone blaming drugs, peer pressure, and the Suicide Girls.
- xOpifex, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26I blame the emo kids
- geometry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24You can go to jail if somebody see you do that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25"suicide rate among preteen and teenage girls rose to its highest level in 15 years..."
Good for them, nice to see them doing almost as well as boys... - tsotha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Neither Spears or Hilton is much to look at these days. I think the average teenage girl compares pretty favorably.
- ZacT, on 10/10/2007, -18/+38With Paris Hilton and Britney Spears for role models is anyone surprised? Everday they see magazines with photoshopped women on them and are told there is something wrong with them if they don't look like that.
North America is sick, this is one of the symptoms. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24How about boys, who have a much higher suicide rate than girls by the way, looking up to fake wrestlers and steroid injected athletes and comparing themselves to them? Thats just as bad, if not worse.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19i blame suicide girls for my tissue shortage!
- uberchaoslord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18I'm not a fan of Nicole Ritchie, but when I read your post I thought "what a bitch, she needs to fall over and die" but then I went looking for the quote. most of the quotes I can find for her are of her saying she doesn't have an eating disorder, and specifically "I know I'm too thin right now, so I wouldn't want any young girl looking at me and saying, 'That's what I want to look like."
Do you have a link to a quote from her saying that? - mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Time for fathers to start hugging their daughters...
- chrazyc, on 10/10/2007, -16/+33Cold hearted as it is, Suicide is Darwinism at work.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24When Nicole Ritchie says that any girl over 100lbs is not a girl at all, any 14 year old who already weighs more than that thinks their life is over.
This is a sad combination of ***** role models and unbelievably low self esteem. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20That was really ignorant. For some it isn't their fault, they just have nobody to turn to. It's easier for you to say, because you have obviously never had any great obstacles in your life.
- al3efroman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13ummm... how about the article we all just read
- neoform, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Yeah, until someone notices that even with this rise, the suicide rate for males is 4-5 times higher than for girls.. where's the headline saying "Teenage boys 500% more likely than girls to kill themselves"?
- reuscel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Nothing like a sad, disturbing story to bring out the worst in Diggers.
- Jelfish, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19I don't think many men commit suicide over body image.
- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Did Nicole Ritchie actually say that? She should be punched in the mouth for that, pregnant or not.
- gllopc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13IMHO, these girls are being fed radically unattainable goals by the news media, Hollywood and ad agencies, throw in some uncaring, irresponsible parents and so decide the only thing to do is to not exist.
- nightwang, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14I totally read the title wrong at first. I read, "Suicide Girls' Rise Rates Dramatically".
- spz104, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"There were 94 suicides in that age group in 2004, compared to 56 in 2003."
So 38 more girls killed themselves compared to 2003. Of course percentages make it sound much more dramatic when the numbers are that low. That's less than 100 total in the whole U.S., very serious for the few families that have to face this rare tragedy, but certainly not a major issue. - Rahodeb, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Or maybe this is just the way our gene pool cleanses itself.
- theNazz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16So that's what people have been doing with all of that extra 'plastic and duct tape' ...
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Life is too precious,
to spend commenting on Digg.
Go outside and play. - neoform, on 10/10/2007, -0/+94-5 times more males commit suicide than girls. seems boys are better at it.
- Hetman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I agree. Damn militant feminist do not care about young males anyways. Im no genuise but having a court system that Rapes fathers of all their rights and makes kids live with there crazy ass mothers might be a reason for the increased suicide rates also.
- demiurgency, on 10/21/2007, -0/+8No it is not. Suicide is the antithesis of Darwinism at work. Animals in the natural world do not commit suicide. (Correct me if there is a study proving that wrong, because I use this as a base assumption).
Suicide is a product of civilization, which separates us from our natural instincts in favor of following a sense of survival in civilization. But these criteria are completely artificial.
An alarmingly high suicide rate indicates there is something wrong with the culture.
MTV, Hollywood, a pleasure-based economy all feel good up front, but leave the society with some gaping problems such as loneliness, hopelessness, and angst. Suicide is a manifestation of these problems.
Don't confuse a problem with society as a whole with the natural process of survival of the fittest. They completely different mechanisms at work.
My 2c. Feel free to disagree. - CanceledCzech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8She's pregnant? Oh, god, that poor child. If I was Nicole Ritchie's Fetus, then I'd learn the Morse code for, "OH DEAR GOD! PLEASE ABORT ME! PLEASE!!"
- BobSutan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Okay, I just saw this on TV and people need to put this into context. The 70% increase in suicide rates in the 10-14 female age group only amounted to 100 deaths nationwide. This isn't really that big of a deal. Sure it's sad that that many kids offed themselves, but we've got bigger fish to fry. The 70% increase sounds astounding until you look at the numbers. In reality it's just scare tactics and could arguably be considered a ploy by the crowd pushing medication. Personally I think kids are just pussified to hell due to certain turns that have occurred in our culture over the last 30 years or so. Put simply, people need thicker skins and need to realize the world doesn't revolve around them. And don't even get me started on the entitlement attitude people have these days!
- dunderballer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Note to self: stay away from these crazy bitches on Digg.
- Hetman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9When the amount of suicides by females equal the amount of suicides by males I will start worrying about the females. Until then we should be focusing on our young males who have a higher suicide rate as of right now.
- Hetman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I do not disagree that their are crazy fathers. It is just a lot easier for crazy women to get control of their kids than it is for a sane father to get control of his kids. And that is just wrong.
- sgtawol, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Ladies, ladies. I'm not really engaged. It was a joke!
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7His was 5-6-5, not 5-6-6. Still wrong, but ironic that you can't count either.
- Nerotique, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Women account for 60% of children murdered worldwide. Don't believe me? Read Dr. Deborah Schurman-Kauflin, you'll find out soon enough it's true.
- brokencode, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ritalin is not for depression. It's for ADHD.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What kind of ***** are you into where a teenage or preteen girl is hanging by her neck from a high point while having sex.
- RuffRidr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So do doctors making mistakes. What's your point?
- ericditmer, on 10/10/2007, -14/+20It's good to see girls are good at something.
Psh, I kid. I kid. - BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9More girl suicides...
