Also, she's from Vietnam, so she wouldn't get Cuban healthcare anyways. She probably doesn't get American healthcare, either. This is probably a very expensive procedure allowable through the donation of many kind people.

I actually have a real life connection to this story and was quite shocked to see it on Digg this morning. You really have no idea what you're talking about. This family makes a few hundred dollars a month. This girl was originally discovered when a friend of my wife's was over there on charitable work and was just walking through a rural village and saw this girl by coincidence and was floored. Even if they HAD the money, the doctors over there can't do jack about it, and they probably don't even make enough in a lifetime to come over here and have the surgery done. You think they can just pull their United Healthcare insurance card out of their wallets? Wake up noob.
I'm glad this case has blown up like it has. My wife and I were one of the first people to donate to this cause, while she was still in Vietnam and they were trying to gain funding just to get her over to the states in the first place. I do it every other Sunday; you don't need to give any money, just go there, serve hot food, and chat with folks. It's one of the only places I know of where humanity is at its purest.
