- doremon313, on 10/10/2007, -2/+47I don't know about that, the jocks at my high school arnt the most cleaver people in the world.
- heartcoldfusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40Brain is the new Penis. Make sure yours is bigger than everyone else's!
- simiya, on 10/10/2007, -6/+38So, too much exercise could make your head explode? None for me, thanks.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Hmm... it doesn't seem to me that a bigger brain begets a smarter person
Most of the smart people I know sit on their ass all day *shrug* - colin409, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17That explains why I'm so stupid
- klinsek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18I object, on the grounds that most jocks are complete Neanderthals.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17I HATE THIS COMMET SYSTEM!!!!!!!!
- Leo21k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Imagine how stupid jocks/buff guys would be if they had never worked out.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15'arnt', 'cleaver' You must work out. </kidding>
- lazyrussian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12That was a rocket-scientist-esque comment
- jtsalas, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15So thats why Barry Bonds head is so big!
- lOvOl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I have met very few out of shape old people who didn't seem mildly retarded. For example, both of my grandmothers were very sedentary and one got Alzheimers and the other had several strokes that eventually contributed to her death.
On the other hand, the old people I know who actively exercise are some of the smartest, wisest people I know and are always great for a good story. For instance, both of my grandfathers are very active and one is 91 and the other I think is 88 and I would not be too surprised if both of them actually hit 100 someday.
What young people don't realize is that even a super-fat out of shape 25 year old who is putting a lot of stress on their body with the food they eat and the weight they carry, not to mention the lack of stress resistance their body has due to it being inactive will add up over time and when you realize you need to get your ass in shape or die, it is often too late.
Plus, a lot of smart people who are totally out of shape, just don't realize how much clearer they could be thinking if they spent a little more time getting the blood flowing to their brain on a regular basis.
Last but not least, in my profession (programming) most guys are unattractive to women because they refuse to do the bare minimum to make themselves attractive. They act like the onus is upon women for liking them "for their personality" or some pussy-assed idealistic ***** that ignores reality. For instance, a family member of mine who is a total nerd has a crap load of money he made from a previous business he was involved in, drives a BMW, has an awesome apartment in Chicago that is a few minutes from the lake, and yet he refuses to do the bare minimum to be successful with meeting women. All he needs to do is pump a little iron and be a little more assertive in how he presents himself and he would have no problem with women, but he refuses because he thinks it is "dumb" to put any effort into improving your attractiveness. He acts like a little boy (he is 30 now), and wonders why women don't respect him as a man. It is so frustrating because his stubborness in accepting reality and doing something about the problem is the source of his problems in the dating department.
I have even tried the "neurogenesis" angle to get him to at least do some pushups, but nothing works. This outlook seems to be true of virtually all geek/nerds even though their lives could be so much happier if they spent just a little bit of time during the week in keeping fit. Most geeks/nerds are nice people, many of whom would be great dads, yet they just seem so set in their ways that they are virtually destined to end up lonely and reproductively unsuccessful because they see women as the way they want them to be, rather than the way women really are. - thailand1972, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10You can really work out the demographics of Digg in a couple of threads.
1. Story involving women = comments that can only be made by virgins (e.g. "I knew a woman once")
2. Story involving "Outside" = comments stating how stupid the people are who actually venture outside and do silly stuff like play sports / interact with society
Conclusion = Your average digger is a fat virgin (probably eating pizza now, and digging me down). - Cyberen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10What about Stephen Hawking?
- ucbmckee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Not all brain cells are created equal. Exercise is likely to stimulate growth in the motor and/or pre-motor cortices, not the frontal cortex (the areas of higher reasoning and 'intelligence'). We've known for decades that brain cells in motor areas respond to use, that's hardly new (e.g. when you amputate a finger, the neural 'fingerprint' for the surrounding fingers often expands). Exercise is very, very unlikely to make you 'smarter', insofar as neurogenesis is unlikely to occur in your 'thinking' areas.
- sirlancelot88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Exercise "affects your genes?" It might affect the characteristics of your body and mind, but it does NOT affect your genes. Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics was disproved a long time ago.
- UPGR4Y3DD, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9All Digg users think that because you workout you are a jock and are therefore stupid. This is their way to rationalize sitting on their collective asses and playing WoW.
- GaidinTS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I bet if you got a show of hands on digg, over half of them exercise regularly. I for one know I am more awake at work, and more aware when I lift in the morning.
- Herostratus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I am so never going to stop on my pot induced neurogenesis! Hellz yeah! Weed makes your brain bigger! WOOT!
- reuscel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Lemme get this straight. Exercise... is good for me?
- KineticShampoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Evolve today!
- brian1625, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Best of all, the region of the brain that grew the most was the hippocampus, the part most involved with memory and cognition. After only three months, those who exercised had brain volumes typical of people who were three years younger!"
- Achaean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3hahahaha
- dyreschlock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"good lord! giganticism!"
- cultist667, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And according to dragon ball z if you exercise enough will you be able to blow up planets. More ***** in the wind.
- Leo21k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I work out too. I have so much free time why not do something constructive with it that doesnt require me to leave my house. :P
- keruha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So digg is the new junior high hangout?
- HairyFotr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Getting hit in the head a lot negates all other benefits regular exercise might bring them.
- corey1505, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2why don't news articles reference their sources better. It was a good article, but I am intrested in looking at some of the research behind the claims.
- jimbimgotgin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So, I should just drop out of school and spend all day in gym...
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Get a Bigger Brain and Better Genes"
I prefer the "Got to the bar and hit on the girl with Big, Beautiful..... Brains" method. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah that is pretty much it. There is no requirement to sit on your ass but yeah.
- Leo21k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Doritos thank you very much.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But it's not the size that matters.....it's how you use it...
.....Right?
I mean, I heard it from Michael Caine, so it must be true:'( - Zachus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Really? What the ***** are you, the paragon of manhood?
- Bladeweever, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Does this mean that I have to stop playing [insert favorite MMOG name here]?
- macattacks10, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He meant to say better jeans...
- keysersoze1234, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"For example, a study by the California Department of Education of 322,000 seventh-grade students found that the most fit scored in the 66th percentile on their SATs, whereas the least fit scored in the 28th percentile."
Since when did 7th graders take the SAT? Statistics like this are totally useless. There are so many other factors that may have contributed to this perceived increase in intelligence. The kids who exercise may be inherently more motivated, they may have more free time to study, etc.
I think that exercise is certainly beneficial, but it annoys me that the media often uses such ***** stats. - dgaspard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I recently started working every morning before work. Within two weeks I've noticed having a clearer mind, sleep easier and it was easier to stay focused through out the day.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1HOW DARE YOU REVEAL THE SECRET IDENTITY OF DIGGERS!?!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I suppose this is a lot like drinking alcohol. A little bit is good for you, but too much is bad. Moderate exercise probably helps, but it seems like there's a point where the more you exercise, the dumber you get, if only because you're spending too much time moving weights around and not enough time thinking about stuff.
- demizer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because they are getting the girls by staying active and fit.
- smackywentz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have never been able to lift in the morning. I don't know of anyone else that can either.
- brian1625, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah, it does come off as that "Coffee is good for you bad for you" routine.
- Derrekito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"All diggers"... so yourself included?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I know I smell a lot worse at work when I exercise before work.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Try doing that with a job.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The problem is that women aren't worth exercising for.
- brian1625, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know about exercising making you smarter, but I could see how it could keep your brain young.
