- Lister169, on 03/01/2009, -0/+41And all this time I thought "Kid tested - Mother approved!" was just a slogan.

"A formal letter of protest calling for an immediate end to the GM food experiments was sent by 22 scientists to the Tufts University School of Medicine, relating the unethical nature of the trials to a breach of the medical ethics code." - ryanonfire, on 03/01/2009, -11/+29Are you all idiots? Everyone already eats GM food.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+18Well I bet peta is happy they stoped using animals.
- Grazzit, on 03/01/2009, -7/+22I still fail at understanding the problem with genetically modified food or hell for that matter cloned beef. The food is identical down to the cellular level. I don't know maybe this is a failure in the education system of how people process food.
A little 101 that will change no one's opinion. Using corn for example, Dekalb and Pioneer only sell genetically modified seed and they provide all the seed corn for the U.S. basically. This isn't limited to corn, no crops are in their natural state. It's actually quite possible that everything you've ever eaten has been genetically modified. - AmyVernon, on 03/01/2009, -3/+18wtf were the parents thinking????
- hadessniper, on 03/01/2009, -7/+22I think this article is just anti GM propaganda. They are making it look like they did wildly dangerous things that are putting these children at risk. The only thing they did was
make the plant produce more vitamin A, which has been proven not to be dangerous. The study was not on if the plant was harmful it was to see how affective the vitamin A was.
Also if you look at the names who signed the petition most of them are not in the biology field, and the ones that are, are all anti-GM. - ZeroDarkness, on 03/01/2009, -7/+19How ethical of GM foods. Some people are still worried about the potential harm and lack of research into the effects of genetically engineered foods (the whole "increased risk of cancer" didn't help). So what do they do? Test on kids. If this is true, the parents should be shot.
- thecoolestguy, on 03/01/2009, -1/+13If you're not going to use kids as test subjects in medical trials, what else are you going to use them for?
- ZeroDarkness, on 03/01/2009, -0/+11That's part of the problem. People assume that companies and the government take the responsible route. But often times, they don't. Any loophole they can find, they'll exploit.
- kemp34, on 03/01/2009, -3/+12One of the main things they modify is crops that DO NOT PRODUCE SEEDS so the poor farmers have to BUY SEEDS EVERY YEAR.
Billions saved eh?! - naturalpapa, on 03/01/2009, -0/+8The golden rice referenced in the article has never been tested on animals. That's what's messed up about this.
- year2000, on 03/01/2009, -2/+8I'm not so sure American's realize all of our fruits and vegetables, including organic are genetically modified.
I worked for the largest grocery chain in the US as a produce buyer several years back.
In the early 1920's US seed companies began producing hybrid seeds, which is a low tech form or genetic modification. The seed companies realized higher yield and larger corn, tomatoes, potatoes, apples, carrots, strawberries, etc., would yield higher profits.
If someone would like to figure out how folks in the US can get Stemilt (Washington) apples in the middle of the off season, you should try to find the video where they pick apples at the beginning of the season, crate them up in large storage bins, suck all of the oxygen out and store them up to six months. Then they re-introduce oxygen back into the container, which a natural type of gas to start the ripening process. Then they box them up ship them across the US in cardboard boxes, which is just what they taste like.

http://www.badscience.net/2008/09/dave-ford-from-d ...
Or even better, we never test anything, so we can't make an informed decision on anything, (Both fish oil and GM foods are considered "safe" -- so why not trial them? Children are different to adults. It's dangerous not to trial them in the bigger picture.)
When it comes to GM foods -- especially in the USA where most of your corn is GM -- you can either look at what you've experienced (it's no different from non-GM food in your experience, and the authorities have done their job, permitting it becasue it's safe) or... it's a massive, massive conspiracy. Global. It should be an X-files episode.
I think the former is more likely, - iancgi, on 03/01/2009, -0/+6Wow a lot of bots... I mean people, sure dont like information like this getting out.
Digg is now an enemy to all who stand for free information. - darknecross, on 03/01/2009, -4/+9I'll point you towards the man who is credited with saving billions of people from starvation. The next time you buy your organic bananas at twice the cost, remember that some people go days without food, and I'm pretty sure they'd rather eat GM food than nothing at all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_E._Borlaug - jman583, on 03/01/2009, -5/+10Well if the GM crops weren't better (or more profitable) then people wouldn't buy them and just use regular seeds instead.

- TheMachine1, on 03/01/2009, -4/+8I say its nearly impossible to eat genetically unchanging food. The natural process of plant evolution leads to mutations with unknown consequences. Humans have naturally over thousands of years selected mutant strains of plants.

Read this book to learn the truth about GMO products. Ignorance is not bliss. - OneOfNone, on 03/01/2009, -2/+6I call *****. I think I found why ~20, not ~200,000 scientists signed this petition.
1. From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_rice "The original Golden rice was called SGR1, and under greenhouse conditions it produced 1.6 ug/g of carotenoids." "Golden rice 2 [GR2 mentioned in petition] produces 23 times more carotenoids than golden rice (up to 37 ug/g), and preferentially accumulates beta-carotene (up to 31 ug/g of the 37 ug/g of carotenoids)." Note carotenoid contents and the fact that SGR1 was created by 2000 and GR2 by 2005.
2. Golden Rice (original SGR1, not GR2) WAS tested in animals: http://www.goldenrice.org/Content2-How/how3a_biosa ...
3. Let's look at all 3 clinical trials using Golden Rice: http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=golden+ ...
Top 3 search results are the ones mentioned in anti-GM petition, 4th is a chance match (testing of unrelated drug). Let's look inside:
First: NCT00680355: A well-nourished population will be fed hydroponically grown Golden Rice containing ~ 1 mg of β-carotene. Ages: 40 Years to 70 Years. Detailed description: Recently, scientists have genetically engineered "golden rice" that contains 1.6 ug beta-carotene in a gram of dry rice ... Study Start Date: August 2004 Estimated Study Completion Date: August 2008 [OK, this is an adult trial with animal-tested SGR1 - no problem]
Second: NCT00082420: Seventy-two children each will take two meals, lunch and supper, containing ... Golden Rice (along with light colored vegetables)... every day for 7 days. Ages Eligible for Study: 7 Years to 9 Years. Study Start Date: September 2004, Study Completion Date: November 2005 [Child trial, was started 1 month after first adults in first trial were tested; completed in 2005, no mention of GR2 - this is animal- and adult- tested SGR1. No problem]
Third: NCT00680212 Seventy-two children each will take two meals, breakfast containing ... Golden Rice containing 0.5ug beta-C (along with light colored vegetables)... on the first day of the study. Phase 2 Study of VITAMIN A EQUIVALENCE OF PLANT CAROTENOIDS IN CHILDREN [this was NCT00082420] Ages Eligible for Study: 6 Years to 8 Years. Study Start Date: July 2008 Study Completion Date: January 2009. [Child trial, continuation of NCT00082420; no mention of GR2 or Golden Rice 2; Phase II cannot be conducted with a different drug/food from Phase I, so this is also SGR1]
Bottom line: no mention of GR2, Golden Rice 2 in clinical trials. All studies were conducted with ORIGINAL Golden Rice which was tested in animals, then few adults, then children. I may be wrong, so I call on anti-GM advocates to show me where the hell those concerned "scientists" found a mention of Golden Rice 2 (GR2) being used in clinical trials. - alpharaptor, on 03/01/2009, -4/+8everything gives you cancer
- homefly, on 03/01/2009, -10/+13This kind of makes me believe that saying "a little knowledge is a bad thing". its funny most people don't realize that nothing they eat is natural not even organic food which is the result of thousands of years of human guided evolution. corn is so heavily modified it can't even reproduce on its own.
the thing that makes me the most upset is that billions more people would be starving right now if it wasn't for food that was modified with radiation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_irradiation. These are just more people getting in the way of progress. - VSKBadCRC, on 03/01/2009, -4/+7Thank you.
This needed to have been said a long time ago, but is important nonetheless. - inactive, on 03/01/2009, -2/+5Aw sweetheart, you do know that organic food can be genetically modified as well, right? It just needs to be a few generations away from the lab to be considered "organic" again...
Hahahhaa, you poor thing. :) - digitalArtform, on 03/01/2009, -0/+3It's not the safety issues everyone notices that are often the problems - it's the patent issues no one notices.

- protodon, on 03/01/2009, -3/+5There's nothing wrong with GM foods. I'd be more worried about all the packaged food with the added chemicals/preservatives that their parents give them like it's real food.

- str3ama, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2Well you should avoid Milk then, an undercover story found that the good majority of factory farms producing milk utilize chemicals to increase the milk yields of the cows. The problem is that the chemicals which are fed to the cows seeps in to the milk and has some pretty bad health effects over long time use. An attempt was made to made the information public on an investigative show on Fox News, but the company that manufactured the drug also owns Nutrasweet which was one of Fox New's biggest advertisers and they threatened to pull their ads if Fox aired it - so Fox pulled it and fired all the lead reporters investigating that case. (see the documentary The Corporation - which mainly deals with the controversy over Fox firing it's staff over the investigative report).
The Dairy Farmers Lobby group is one of the most pervasive and influential, they've been running increasingly aggressive campaigns geared to comforting the public that milk is safe for consumption, when in reality it's quite harmful to children and really shouldn't be drunk considering that their are a lot of pollutants in it that are slipping in with little regulation. - MikiMac, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2Guinea Kids.
- kemp34, on 03/01/2009, -9/+11Whoever did this should face significant criminal and civil penalties.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -4/+6We all already eat genetically modified food. It's already in the main food supply, and it's actually not harmful at all -- why? Because with very few exceptions (like in the case of Psylocibe Cubensis mushrooms) food is not drugs, and paranoid, knee-jerk super-mom sites are not bastions of scientific wisdom.
- sturmgiest, on 03/01/2009, -3/+5I was going to be alarmed by the article till I read your comment. Most people are distrustful of GM foods because they don't understand the science. The organic produce in the grocery store is generally the most expensive and the least healthy for a reason. If it was a small modification like this and it was proven not dangerous, then there is no reason to be alarmed. And if you aren't credentialed in a related field to a topic, then your opinion on it is not relevant or worthy of consideration.
- AngryWookiee, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2The problem with GM corn and similar products is that it locks you into using that companies seeds and their pesticides. Round Up Ready Corn or Soybeans from Monsanto are made so that you have to use Round Up (a Monsanto product) on them as a pesticide... the crops also have an agreement similar to EULA on software that you have to agree to. You are not allowed to save the seeds from these crops... forcing the farmer to buy new seeds every year (farmers have been saving seeds for nearly 10000 years).
The other problem with GM crops such as corn, is if I plant a non GM crop of corn in the field next to a field of GM corn the corn can cross pollinate and my corn can end being GM. It is then possible that Monsanto will come and sue me for stealing their corn even though I didn't know that my neighbor was using GM corn (Ready about Monsanto Canada Inc. v. Schmeiser at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsanto_Canada_Inc._ ...
As for those of you who think that GM's are safe, that's fine but I think that it should be labeled that crops are genetically modified. Japan and Europe do have to lable GMO foods in their products and guess what... not to many people buy them. In Canada and USA there is no such law. 70% of the food that we buy is genetically modified.... but we have no way of knowing which ones are
Those of you claiming that we couldn't feed the world without GM foods are also wrong, there is enough food in the world to feed everybody it just does not happen because of politics and greed. - Barackalypse, on 03/01/2009, -2/+4What was the Government thinking? From the article:
"The experiment was funded and administered by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)."
I mean sure, this is the same Government that left hundreds of black men with syphilis untreated and never bothered even telling them they had the disease, but still, doing this stuff to kids? (Google "Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment"), - kvgirard, on 03/01/2009, -5/+7well this corn killed 87 of our mice, wonder what'l happen if we feed it to some kids?
- Grazzit, on 03/01/2009, -1/+2actually I just understand the process of digestion and understand the genetic make up of my food means nothing at all to my tummy.

exactly, on Modern Marvels, I think, they did a thing on corn, and basically the cob from the original corn was like and inch long. That crop is completely man made, they also said that it isn't really viable on its own it requires too much tending the stalks need to be planted X distance apart or they will kill each other off. - Grazzit, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1kinda hoping it's grace park the world could use about 1000 of her
