- RandyStott, on 01/18/2009, -1/+24***** man I'm going to get myself a pack of newports and a 6 pack of bud. Life's over rated anyway.
- sgvprelude, on 01/19/2009, -1/+22I rather die at 65 partying my whole life, than die at 90 not doing *****.
- BoneheadFarker, on 01/19/2009, -2/+22What fun would that be?
- lisaawesome, on 01/19/2009, -0/+19Or you could be one of those people who lives a perfectly healthy life and dies at age 40 of cancer.
- bobcrotch, on 01/19/2009, -1/+16Why the ***** do you think I drink and smoke? Because I want to live to some feeble old age?
- fortune500b, on 01/19/2009, -0/+12i'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints....
- inactive, on 01/18/2009, -2/+11Perhaps downing an entire bottle of vodka on a dare doesn't help.
- fallingdamage, on 01/19/2009, -0/+9sometimes I wish Digg had an "Obvious" category like fark does.
- ohcoaster, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8some people die old whether they abuse their bodies or not.
some people die young whether they abuse their bodies or not. - Chamrox, on 01/19/2009, -1/+9Who wouldn't? Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.
Here's how it works, you party your whole life, then at 60, you get COPD and Emphysema from all the smoking. Then, over the course of a couple of years, you die very slowly, and painfully.
But you're right, it's about quality of life, not quantity. The secret is moderation. I don't see why someone couldn't have a few smokes, if it's once a month or so. It's the daily habit that will eventually kill ya. - Akairenn, on 01/19/2009, -1/+8You could get hit by a bus tomorrow and turned into a vegetable. I shouldn't have to pay for that either, amirite?
If you don't like paying for it, a) don't cry for socialized healthcare; b) don't buy into insurance at all. Simple problems, simple solutions. - ammundsen, on 01/19/2009, -1/+7@kingmanic, it might not be true that smokers are an extra burden on the system. There has been good research to suggest that they aren't. First off most everyone has big health care expenses at the end of life. Second, smokers tend to die earlier and thus draw less benefits such as Social Security in the US from the government.
This article points out that it is some smokers who are at risk. Would the system allow those who do not have the genetic predisposition and who smoke to escape the extra burden put on all smokers? That would only seem fair. I'd bet everything such an exemption would be disallowed because it would be called unfair. And yet unfairness is the reason given to tax the heck out of smokers in the first place. - FishHammer, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6I'll live to be 90. MARK MY WORDS.
- jake1337, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6Calling a whole people irrational and stupid is also irrational and stupid
- vizeroth, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6only partially, the rest requires government or mad scientist intervention.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6Pringles, as the canister can be used to build a wifi antenna.
- ileftfark, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6If it weren't for the genetic differences, all smokers and drinkers would die at around the same age, based on usage.
- Spamcan, on 01/19/2009, -1/+6After a certain amount of time it's a slow lingering death for most of us anyway. I choose to live how I want and die before I hit 70, ***** getting old.
- Biscuitz, on 01/19/2009, -1/+5Who says you have to party, and drink and do drugs your whole life to have fun, though? Fun is perceived by the individual. Not by what others think you should be doing.
- vizeroth, on 01/19/2009, -0/+4It doesn't really work that way. Personally, for various reasons involving the lifestyle I was living as a teenager, didn't believe I would be alive now, at age 30, so smoking wasn't really a big deal. To further add fuel to the fire, both of my grandparents died of cancer: my grandfather of liver cancer 20 years after he quit drinking, my grandmother of a recurrence of breast cancer, 20 years after a mastectomy. Both deaths lead me to believe in the last 10 years or so (since they died) that there was little point to quitting, because I'd just get lung cancer anyway (and further there's all of the other crap that gives you cancer that you can't help but be exposed to anyway).
You don't choose how or when you die, and most people that do things everyone thinks will kill them have pretty well accepted that. I decided to quit, and it hasn't been easy (although I must say Chantix works pretty well for me), but it's working. I still don't know how I'm going to die (I could be hit by a bus on my way to work tomorrow, especially since the forecast calls for snow), but at least I can stop buying cigarettes and stop worrying about how long it's going to be before the states start banning smoking outdoors (since I haven't smoked indoors since my wife got pregnant 5 years ago).
Besides, smokers live to their 90s all the time, which is why the damned study was done in the first place. Some people get lung cancer without smoking a single cigarette, others die of natural causes at old age smoking cigarettes and cigars their whole lives. - Exzhaton, on 01/19/2009, -1/+5At least we'll die happy.
- kingmanic, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3Cancer is a set of mutations which cause cells to both grow out of control and to grow support systems for themselves. It happens because the built in repair mechanism can't cope and the right combination of mutations occur. It makes sense that some version of the repair mechanisms are better than others and can tolerate higher levels of mutagens. Regardless your better off either way by limiting the amount of mutagens you expose yourself to.
- fortune500b, on 01/19/2009, -1/+4Pringles, no question
- ryanwhw, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3Well, it really doesn't matter what you do. I know someone who doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, runs 5km every day, watch his diet everyday. Really healthy life.. Suddenly, he is gone, heart attack when he is almost 30.
The other friend, drink almost everyday, smoke, and he is 81, still walk like young guy and stronger than most guys i know.
so, why? - Chamrox, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3Emphysema and cirrhosis be damned, at least I won't get cancer!
- acliffhang3r, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3No. But don't let that stop you from talking out of your ass since clearly Detective ***** has figured everything out.
- Propethic, on 01/19/2009, -1/+4does it ever get tired thinking that you're better than everyone else?
- alienjazzcat, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3this is a useless observation..
the scientists didn't stop at this seemingly titanic insight, but questioned further.. - pika2000, on 01/19/2009, -2/+4If you smoke, you'll die. If you don't smoke, you'll die. So which one you'll pick? =) Note that I don't smoke, but that's the argument of some smokers I know.
- nebion, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2And for some, their habits actually have a significant effect on when and how they die.
You never know. Whatever you do is simply a choice. Personally, I'd rather not even know in advance, I'll live my life the way I feel is best. I'll eventually die in any case. Perhaps I could've postponed it a bit by different lifestyle choices, but I'm not convinced it would be worth it.
Not that I live a horribly unhealthy life, but I'm not overly concerned, either. - JamesBondJr, on 01/18/2009, -16/+18You could also just stay away from those unhealthy habits and remain healthy
- jimbeezy88, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2The trouble is how addictive nicotine is. For some, they could have a few smokes, here and there. For many others, though, it gets out of control very quickly. You can counter this by saying they need to be aware and use their own free will, but I would counter that by saying that there are a large number of people who smoke and do not do it occasionally -- it's a serious problem and a quick jibe about free will is rather inhumane.
I'm with you on the moderation though. It's just that moderation is more easy to stick to with certain things (like red wine if you don't have a tendency towards alcoholism), than it is for others like industrial tobacco. Cigs aren't rolled out of some home grown tobacco - they are rolled out of industrial strength tobacco produced by companies who only care about one thing (generalization but largely true), and that's selling cigarettes to consumers. - KenSPT, on 01/19/2009, -1/+3Would you rather have a brand new canister of Pringles, or an unopened bag of Sun Chips?
Discuss. - Pstall, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2Damn your friend must be a REALLY heavy drinker to have liver cirrhosis at 20.
- hangman16, on 01/19/2009, -2/+4I find it funny when people take this news and interpret it as "See, it doesn't matter what I do - who knows when I'll die - I might as well have fun." And yeah I know a lot of people just say it jokingly, I'm not being overly serious here. But I see it as staying healthy will allow you to live as long as you can (genes wise). I guess I just don't consider drinking and smoking as the definition of 'fun'. There are far more things I'd rather be doing like traveling and seeing new things and trying new things. If you live longer you can do more of that - and enjoy it coherently. But for a lot of people, including most of my friends, the only thing they can think of to do for fun is do nothing all day, go out at night and get drunk.
- TheAirLoom, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2Hmm, maybe because they smoke and drink? Duh!
- spidur1, on 01/19/2009, -1/+3I am pretty sure I have the good genes but I quit smoking anyway just to be safe.
- Rivetgeek, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1Go ***** on your fist then punch yourself in the face.
- Woog, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1I think I might take up smoking just to spite people like kingmanic.
- Stuntaneous, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1you know, you can live to 90 havin a top time.
- Pstall, on 01/19/2009, -1/+2How many cases of 30 year olds that run 5km everyday droping dead of heart attacks vs people that have smoked for 20+ years developing lung cancer do you think there are?
- Rivetgeek, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1I call *****. alcoholic cirrhosis is unheard of in someone that age.
- Rivetgeek, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1a 30 year old only dies of a heart attack if there was an underlying heart defect or drugs involved. Period.
- rowlodge, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1this explains" Madonna's" appearance.
- mindovermat, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1what are the markers?
- jfitz369, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1Cheers!
- buckrogers1965, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1I know i am going to die, what I care about to that point is quality of life. I don't smoke and I drink in moderation because anyone I know that smokes and drinks hard looks and acts 20 years older than they are by the time they are 40.
- CanceledCzech, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1...the sinners are much more fun...
- CanceledCzech, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1An ex of mine used to say "we all have to die sometime". She was (maybe still is, hell if I know) a heavy smoker.
