- manzplan, on 10/17/2008, -9/+26Nothing causes people to overeat.. either you pick up a fork or you dont.. either you load up too much at the buffet or you dont.. if you have gene that makes you WANT to over eat.. you still can FIGHT your craving..
- Sornos, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8As lorenn said before "Genes gave me bad eyes but it doesn't mean I have to go through life walking into walls". You still have choice.
- brstilson, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6The gene that causes overeating works by suppressing the areas in the brain that cause the feeling of being full. I agree, no fat person has to be that way, even with a genetic condition, but many are at a disadvantage. In the past, limited supplies of food have kept this in check, but now with the glut of fatty, sugary foods, it is hard not to resist. Plus, it's becoming harder and harder to eat healthy without spending half your day preparing food. Just about everything pre-prepapred has high fructose corn syrup in it, for example.
- BXRWXR, on 10/17/2008, -0/+5I'm not fat, I'm big gened!
- lorenn, on 10/17/2008, -0/+5Genes gave me bad eyes but it doesn't mean I have to go through life walking into walls.
- SuperSunny, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4It is in our genes to enjoy sweet and fatty foods. Obviously, one does not get sick of eating sweet and fatty foods. (unless SUPER consumed), and it eventually becomes a habit to constantly eat sweet and fatty foods, considering that's all America really sells.
Just hit the gym and run. Stop being a lazy ass, eat sweet/healthy-sugar foods after a damn good workout, and eat in moderation. - TheSwashbuckler, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3"Genes are a factor, but not a big factor."
I'm sure you've done many years of scientific research to back up that statement, right? - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -2/+5Man NO One and I mean No one should have a right to play with life this way!!
- LongShlong, on 10/17/2008, -2/+5The comment under the link is absurd and contradicts the link text; if gene mutation predicts future weight gain, then why bring up overeating? How about this... Future overeating predicts weight gain. Put down the fork, fatties.
People need to stop looking for stuff to blame other than themselves. - healthinformer, on 10/17/2008, -4/+7Genes are a factor, but not a big factor. It still boils down to eating the right foods and not chemically engineered foods--eat foods as grown--then the gene factor does not play a large roll. It still boils down to some self-control.
- TheMachine1, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Evolution has made a workout to get food adaptive and unnecessary exercise maladaptive. The fact you do not need to workout to get a meal in 2008 is the problem. Evolution wants more babies not thin old people.
- MacBookForMe, on 10/17/2008, -2/+5I've just got another scientific excuse for my overeating...:)
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Please don't say this is true.... how can thin people blame thick people for not having self discipline anymore?
/snark
I say this as someone in OK shape at 43 -- really I welcome studies like this. Because if you are thin, rich, good looking, healthy -- you should be f'ing grateful and have a little humility. Most everyone wants the same things in life, and have to start with different genetics and opportunities. It is either; crappy genes that you didn't choose, or crappy parents you didn't choose. You can blame people to provide peer pressure, but that also doesn't help you figure out what is causing the problem. - VitriolAndAngst, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2>> This is actually backwards. In the history of mankind, getting food and relaxation was a rarity. It is actually people with a high metabolism or who NEED to work out that are a mutation.
If we ever get back to a situation where many people are starving -- the people with slow metabolisms will be the lucky ones. Evolution is going to favor calorie frugality and over-eating. Most people who gain too much weight can still reproduce before they die. So while high-metabolism people were probably weeded out, slow-metabolism people will not be weeded out in modern society.
Hence this will have to be solved by either passing laws to make food better, or by gene/drug therapy, or by a change in lifestyle. What WON'T work, is leaving this up to the free market and will power -- otherwise it would have worked already. I know some fat people and they are NOT happy about it. - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -5/+7Oh shut up you whiny little bitch and go eat more beefcake fatty
- Bith8654, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2So do animals choose to be gay? It seems pretty ignorant to automatically assume its a BS argument, especially since you almost definitely have zero experience in the field of genetics.
- Bith8654, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2No one was trying to argue that this mutation popped up out of nowhere, it very well could have been around forever, we just didn't have the environment to fully exploit it. It's not meant to be used as an excuse at all, even the researchers say that. It's meant to better our understanding of obesity and overeating because like it or not, simply saying "***** science, Americans just need to eat better" doesn't work regardless of whether it's right or not. It's an epidemic that parents are passing on to their children, and once kids start down that road, it's hard to all of a sudden learn when you're an adult that you need to start eating right and exercising.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Yeah, like you can fight your craving for sex...
- kleptomaniac, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3For some people it simply isn't that easy, they have absolutely no way to feel full. I have a co-worker who will go through 2+ pounds of green beans a day to simply keep the gnawing hunger at bay. While it's true many obesity cases just require some basic nutrition and exercise, for many others the solution goes a lot deeper than just a little self control.
- doiveo, on 10/17/2008, -11/+13If the study holds up then it makes fat jokes less tolerable. Teasing someone for something they did can be harsh but teasing someone for something out of their control is cruel.
- imLissy, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2exactly!
I love food, I really do. I would eat all day if I could, but I don't. I don't because I like my body and would like to keep it for as long as possible. - Lucas123, on 10/17/2008, -2/+4The new gene is called Abhydrolase Twinkie Cupcake or ATC.
- leerayIG88, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3I know how to fix this. Be more active, eat/drink healthy, and get plenty of sleep.
I'm a scientist! - flamesoftheend, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Is my R2D2 gene mutated?
- Bith8654, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1If you mean "fight" as in resisting from acting on the urges the craving gives, yes it is exactly like that. If you mean being able to talk to your brain and tell it to stop wanting sex...no.
- simplyphp, on 10/17/2008, -3/+4No more excuses, this is RIDICULOUS!
- beezer123, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1It's funny the number of people who blame their weight on the "chubby gene" then you see the meal portions that they tuck into.
Yeah chubby gene fer sure.
http://www.dsi-for-free.co.uk - flamesoftheend, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1and big Jeaned!
- KaivenTor, on 10/17/2008, -1/+2@manzplan: Congratulations! You've officially failed biochemistry 101, how does it feel?
- Darkaged, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Even the Blendtec just walks away from that scene.
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1
"I would like two foot-long chili-cheese dogs, an order of large fries and a large DIET coke to go please!"
"Its a "gene mutation" - MatthewTheRaven, on 10/17/2008, -2/+2Greed? I've heard a lot of excuses for being overweight, but I've never heard it blamed on greed. I think you meant gluttony ;)
- Mockylock, on 10/17/2008, -1/+1I've been on twinkie gene therapy for a while. What else is in that creamy center?
- loopis, on 10/17/2008, -1/+1and funnier.
- cougar3429, on 10/17/2008, -0/+0They eat more cake.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -4/+4It's called learning self-control, most parents have poor dietary habits and pass it down to their kids. I see it all the time, parents taking their young children to fast food joints and feeding them greasy processed *****. Learn to make your own meals.
- LastDitchHero, on 10/17/2008, -7/+7So is it ok to make fun of homosexual people then? We just had a story about a boy who like to dress like a girl.
- ddawggin, on 10/17/2008, -2/+1Eureka! I think I might have figured out what is causing the problem!
Calories in > Calories burned.
I am a ***** genius. I feel blessed to have been given the genes required to figure that out. I feel bad for everyone that wasn't :( - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -4/+3Please tell me you are joking
- jehan60188, on 10/17/2008, -2/+1http://digg.com/general_sciences/Obese_People_Get_ ...
- taiwanniggadu, on 10/17/2008, -4/+2studies also show that fat people are happier
- jordantneff, on 10/17/2008, -2/+0Wait what? I'm going to get FATTER?
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -3/+1Lick your lips, turnin me on now
Make a doo-doo, do it kids! Make a doo-doo!
Slap your face, slap your friends
Get sexy kids
Stinks in here, smells like meat, rotten meat, kids why would you bring that rotten meat in here of all places?
Kids you stupid *****, what the hell is wrong with you kids? - Bowsky07, on 10/17/2008, -3/+1What do you know - some large percentage of the human population was randomly hit with an "I can't control how I eat" mutation, all completely independent of each other. Oh, and the timing of these millions of mutations just happens to match up with the invention of the desk job, the automobile, and easy access to food (freezers, higher selection of sugar products, sodas, etc) Coincidence? I think a very few,
- JasonCox, on 10/17/2008, -4/+1Woohoo! Science now says it's not my fault that I eat to much and don't get off my fat lazy ass and exercise!
:-P - smity9384, on 10/17/2008, -4/+1Now...what they are saying sounds like the body adjusts to maintain it's weight. If you weigh 100 more pounds, of course your body expects more food. How does that not make sense?
- Gewn, on 10/17/2008, -5/+0The genetic argument for homosexuality is complete *****. Every time someone chooses gay I want to correct or fix them.
