- Sarki, on 04/21/2008, -18/+148Who determines what is extreme thinness? Who defines what it means to incite it? This is a government attack on free speech that I hope never comes to the US.
Don't misunderstand, I like what they are trying to do, just not how they are doing it. - 1jaxstate1, on 04/21/2008, -6/+102Can we stop the shows with extreme fatness too. Fair is fair.
- brstilson, on 04/21/2008, -28/+68A socialist government censors speech and the press.
Shocking. - whataboutdave, on 04/21/2008, -2/+38Not sure why you were getting Dugg down. Extreme obesity is just as unhealthy as extreme thinness.
- RomeyRome, on 04/21/2008, -1/+34How does the saying go?
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions."? - whatthefu, on 04/21/2008, -9/+33I'm all for health awareness but this is just retarded. The government is not your mother.
- jbenson2, on 04/21/2008, -3/+25Here is a montage I created with some of these Parisian waifs.

Question: What do the European males see in these beanpoles? - k00k, on 04/21/2008, -4/+25In other news, Rosie O'Donnell applied for French citizenship today.
- JavertHolmes, on 04/21/2008, -1/+211) From what I understand, people select the models that make the clothes look best. IE: they're walking hangers.
2) At the risk of stereotyping the industry, what percentage of the people selecting the models for a runway show are straight men? And even if they are straight men, what percent aren't pressured by the status quo dictating who should "belong" on the runway? - nomadofthehills, on 04/21/2008, -2/+21I guess I won't be able to sell my tapeworm eggs to french dieters anymore :(
- LooseSeal, on 04/21/2008, -6/+22I dugg your comment and saw that it went from +5 diggs to +5 diggs. WTF. Who would digg you down?
- nahsrocketeer75, on 04/21/2008, -7/+22Yup, I can get behind the concept ... but can't for the life of me (or my children) see how they're going to enforce such a law.
- whataboutdave, on 04/21/2008, -2/+17Great President? Maybe so, but I doubt he will carve his legacy with legislation as pointless as the anti-thinness law.
- DarkLance, on 04/21/2008, -1/+15models?
- brstilson, on 04/21/2008, -1/+15Conservative in France /= Conservative in the US
Conservatism in Europe is like Left-leaning centrism here. - Otto, on 04/21/2008, -1/+15You know what's more attractive than either one of those? Freedom.
- xcecatalina, on 04/21/2008, -2/+15*whoosh*
- Screwy1138, on 04/21/2008, -5/+18it is important for governments to create laws to maintain the health of their citizens when they provide the healthcare.
- Sarawanan, on 04/21/2008, -0/+13No more Macbook Air ads in France
- coyote1284, on 04/21/2008, -3/+15*puts on shrill activist hat* How dare you be so insensitive! Obesity is not an individual choice. As long as HFCS and transfat foods are still availabe, we will never end obesity. Take it out on "We don't give a damn about people as long as we're making money" corporations, not the people. *removes hat*

- meruru, on 04/21/2008, -0/+12But it is more than happy to be your nanny
- YodaJones, on 04/21/2008, -0/+11Those extreme skinny chicks are gross. They should just force feed them some nice french bread sandwiches.
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -5/+16I am shocked that a country without free speech is censored.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 04/21/2008, -5/+16This law ... brought to you by the same ***** who ensured that not a single MP3 player sold anywhere in Europe plays louder than 100 dB (compared to 130 dB for an iPod sold in the US) - the nanny state ensuring I won't go deaf, when all I want is listen to some poorly mastered tracks from the Eighties at decent volume ...
That being said, the whole "thin is beautiful" thing has admittedly gone too far. Personally, I prefer thin girls, but some of the things we see on the catwalks these days *is* disgusting. But the girls (impressionable, many of them from Eastern Europe, wanting to feed their families) are not (the only ones) to blame ...
I'm not being homophobic here, but it seems (and I discussed this with two fashion journalists who agreed "off the mike") that this look is pushed by a clique of homosexual designers who despise the natural curves of the female body. Some of these clowns should be shot or at least exposed as the sad, women-hating ***** they are - but that's not a government's business. - inactive, on 04/21/2008, -1/+11They tax unhealthy foods.
"in France, sweets, chocolates, margarine and vegetable fat. attract VAT of 20.6% whilst other foods attract VAT of only 5.5%"
http://www.ifs.org.uk/bns/bn49.pdf - Scheissen, on 04/21/2008, -2/+12How can Diggers be for socialized healthcare and then cry foul play here? Hypocrites.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 04/21/2008, -11/+21Hello, brstilson, genius and cosmopolitan du jour:
"CONSERVATIVE lawmaker Valery Boyer, author of the law, argued that encouraging anorexia or severe weight loss should be punishable in court."
Also, from everyone's favorite encyclopedia:
"Nicolas Sarkozy is the current President of France, elected [...] after DEFEATING Socialist Party contender Ségolène Royal during the second round of the 2007 election. Before his presidency, he was leader of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) RIGHT WING PARTY."
Thanks for playing the Internet. Feel free to come back when you have adjusted your set of prejudices to the facts. - frostbyt, on 04/21/2008, -1/+10If your thin you get thrown in jail with nothing to eat but ice-cream and butter.
- nomadofthehills, on 04/21/2008, -0/+9And who is promoting this? Other WOMEN!
Guys like ***** and ass, not twelve year old boys. - SubjectiveC, on 04/21/2008, -3/+12But it is the government's job to decide what is a health hazard and what isn't. I hope you and your untainted-with-***** food can be grateful for that. Also, it's illegal to sell cigarettes to minors, so there is a reason not to advertise to kids.
- GregIsLegend, on 04/21/2008, -1/+10I agree. The government has no right to tell people what they can or can't publish.
- surKaz, on 04/21/2008, -1/+9"Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions..."
- 11oops, on 04/21/2008, -2/+10Proof that the /sarcasm tag is still necessary.
- heartcoldfusion, on 04/21/2008, -5/+12Gimme a break. The name of the party doesn't determine the style of government.
By your reasoning, America switches between being a republic when the Republican party has the white house and a democracy when the Democrats do. - slvrbullet87, on 04/21/2008, -1/+8They dont know how to use the magic box
- Screwy1138, on 04/21/2008, -3/+10when the government takes over healthcare, it becomes about money. the government gains incentive to make sure people are healthy for money reasons. then they start 'fining' you for not being healthy since you are costing them more. to do this, the government had to define healthy. this becomes a 'hot issue' popularity contest (legislation like this is only happening in France because it's a 'hot topic').
Look, I know you guys are mostly leftists who love the idea of social healthcare (you are entitled to it by the government, the government is there to take care of you), but social health care WILL give the government more and more access to legislate your private life whether you are wearing blinders to it or not. I'm not here to convince you it's of absolultely no consequence, but at least maybe people will like reading other views (oh wait no I'll be dugg down because I'm disagreed with, regardless of the merit of the discussion) - slvrbullet87, on 04/21/2008, -1/+8Got him to the front page didnt it?
- vexingmodstwo, on 04/21/2008, -1/+8Wait... you would like our Congress to pass a moronically vague law like this?
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -4/+10Ha Ha, Mississippi is smarter than France
Law: “No Fat People Allowed”
http://itola.com/business/new-mississippi-law-no-f ... - PeppermintPig, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6When thin models are outlawed, only outlaws will be models?
Guns and chicks, alright! That'll work. :)
Guess this means there will be a black market on fashion magazines, and a French fashion police. - mikepictor, on 04/21/2008, -1/+7by your argument, so is a law against encouraging people to take drugs. It's an incitment to a harmful behaviour. They aren't making being skinny illegal, only the glorification of thin-ness.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 04/21/2008, -2/+8Thanks for not knowing any context of France's political spectrum, yet using descriptions equivalent to the US's spectrum. Right Wing French does not equal right wing American
- j0keR, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6I dugg you up because your first comment is right on the ball. The second comment is close, but to call what we have now "private industry" is simply false. If you look at the facts, most of the money going towards health care in the United States is spent by the government. The reason we have problems is because the government is so involved already. This is a known process:
1) Government gets involved in the marketplace
2) Conditions worsen, government claims a "market failure"
3) Government gets more involved
4) Back to step 2 - Screwy1138, on 04/21/2008, -2/+8Also, it's not an issue about who can do healthcare better, the government or private industry. We all know private industry is failing miserably. The issue is what privacy and government power issues arise when you give it to the government. Do you honestly expect them not to abuse this?
Also, I don't believe the constitution allows for the federal government to do healthcare in the US. If you want to do it in the states, state by state, it may be less efficient, but at least we have better representation in the state goverments and better citizenship oversight of our states. - oldhick, on 04/21/2008, -5/+11You do realize that Sarkozy is their version of the neocon Bush...http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1681 ...
- 955701, on 04/21/2008, -1/+7It's like inciting a riot, but nobody steals any food.
