- FireAtWill, on 11/30/2007, -1/+72Well, it usually ends up in her hair anyway.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -2/+40""People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns," the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying."... I guess, when it comes to talking STD's, you couldn't cite a better reference than DONG!
- BlueSkyfish, on 11/30/2007, -0/+29How do they obtain these used condoms anyway? Are there a bunch of people rooting though trash for condoms or something?
- shifty2, on 11/30/2007, -1/+27I joked about contracting "hair herpes" and people laughed at me saying there was no remote possibility of this happening...
That "remote possibility" just presented itself. - inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+27AIDS dies 4 hours after it leaves its host.
- andrewcsayer, on 11/30/2007, -3/+28Must be small hair bands if it is in China, then.
- Littleedgitt, on 11/30/2007, -0/+16that reminds me...
i need hair bands - kooft, on 11/30/2007, -0/+15"the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying."
Just keep in mind the source of the information... - DeskFlyer, on 11/30/2007, -2/+16"Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said."
I think they are missing the keyword 'dead' when listing bacteria and viruses here. - greenwald, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11How do they know they are used condoms? I'd imagine defective condoms from manufacturing are the ones they are recycling. They could take my used condoms and use them for head bands.
- kizzbizz, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10Ok, so you're telling me when they're sorting for recyclable plastics, they're actively choosing the ejaculate-filled condoms? I mean... come on. Its too hard to believe. And, if I remember the "poisonous cardboard being used as meat in Beijing dumplings" story, theres a good chance that it is.
- nerdherder, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9And with a healthy coat of hair gel already applied!
- kizzbizz, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Scary thing is? They pay the homeless to :| I've seen people rooting through the smelliest garbage bins ever looking for plastic bottles so they can get a 10 cent return from the Govt (seriously.)
- aflaks, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Having taken a ton of international business classes, your statement actually holds its water well. The Chinese are taking over the world, both commercially and in terms of production, both abilities being key to the success of the American economy. Although they are not fully developed as a force yet, the potential is clearly there and countries including the US are doing everything it takes to slow the Chinese from fully tapping into that potential and destroying their own respective economies.
Im glad someone else has opened their eyes to the way things work instead of just taking in headlines and events and thinking no more of it. - p0ss, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Well these ones come with free hair gel !
- Jelfish, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8That's not entirely true. HIV (the virus, not AIDS, the syndrome that many people with HIV eventually get) is a fragile virus. In most cases, the virus will die when the fluid it was in dries up. In fact, hot water and soap will kill HIV.
- mathena, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9I am a Chinese and this is a joke. Let me tell you why.
1. We never recycle condoms, actually we never recycle cans, bottles, not to mention condoms. The recycling system is under development in China. (I was living in big city, I know the real situation )
2. In China, new condom is about 0.2$, there is no need to re-sell the used one for money
3. (After the previous one) We are very shy in talking about sex, thus, we will trash used condom as soon as possible, instead of recycle it somewhere.
4. Everything in China is cheep, there is really no need to recycle a stupid condom. If you really need it to do something else, at every corner of this street, you can find one. [Our gov. paid a lot of money in fighting with AIDS and it's legal to sell condom everywhere as we don't have fundamentalist ] - floridiot2, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Hey! Cavemen are people too! What the ***** gives you the right to publicly bash us with no remorse!?
- kxhoopshooter, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8haha 'used' condoms, you're funny.
- JLecker, on 11/30/2007, -4/+11Or maybe the Chinese just make *****-quality products?
Nah, it must be a conspiracy. - floridiot2, on 11/30/2007, -3/+10THEY HAVE SMALL PENISES! HAHA
- Renuvian, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5This story makes basically no sense at all. Where are they getting mass quantities of cheap used condoms. Do people in china separate their condoms for recycling? Cans, bottles, plastic bags, condoms?
I don't think so. - Jelfish, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5The only quote from a person in this article is a local dermatologist talking about becoming "infected with AIDS" when they hold the hair bands in their mouths. There is no mention on how used condoms are being collected (do people save up their used condoms and put them in condom-recycling bins?). Also, even if they were, they would have to be melted down and that would sufficiently kill any virus or bacteria (not that it isn't still a rather disgusting thought). That dermatologist is just some random person who was able to give a quote. It's lazy and irresponsible journalism.
- JMScheib, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7Yeah, I'm certainly no expert, but if there were any sort of STDs in those condoms at the time of use, there certainly wouldn't be within a few hours.
- dabigguy3, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5"the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong."
I'm sure he knows alot about this subject - p0ss, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5If you agree with someone, digg them. If you wish to comment on their comment, use "reply".
- AsianChopsticks, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7Chinese people aren't cavemen you ignorant *****.
- Hotisland, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Come on. How it could be possible??? How much used condoms you can get per day? Imagining the effort the employees have to put in to find them - dig in trash bin I suppose. The only possiblity is to recycle the defective condoms from manufacturing.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+5How about the other STD's hmmmm?
- cheeseron, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4aids isn't a virus, or living, for that matter...
- Starfoxy7, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4How the heck are they getting these used condoms? We have a hard enough time getting people to put their paper in the recycle bin.
My best guess is some poor soul is being paid to wade through trash and pick out the used condoms. If that's the case, whatever they're getting paid it isn't enough. - Aticper, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Actually, viruses are basically inanimate, so unless you expose the condoms to hard radiation, your not getting rid of them easily.
- quaxon, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Link this together with those sandals from walmart that burned your feet a while ago and i think youve got something.
- Jelfish, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4I don't know where you're from, but even in a country with a government that was originally designed to be overthrowable (the USA), we have not succeeded. There are only so many students willing to stand in front of a tank, and unfortunately they tend to die soonest.
- MrTea, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3slowpoke.jpg
- microview2007, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3In a world where families lived on mere pennies, its not surprising such business thrive. Having dated a mainland Chinese women, they believe one should save every cent and buy everything cheap, as cheap as possible. Saving a few cents is rewarding and even in the US Chinese women would rather dig through a box of rotten fruit at a local Asian market to save 10 cents instead of shopping at a US grocery store like Safeway where most every fruit is fresh. Don't believe me? Just go to your local China town or area and check it out.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4yes they do and its not a joke, its not racist, its just a fact. there was even a survey about it.
- jayb1rd, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Regardless, it's still ***** disgusting.
- shreela, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3I'd save the plastic bottles to make a floating island if I didn't have a home.
- Elranzer, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Appropriate username for the parent.
- Laqrhead, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Just because someone writes something on the web, DOESN"T MEAN IT"S TRUE!.
This is so stupid. Who throws their used condoms in the recycling bin? Harvesting used condoms out of the trash would not be economically feasible, I don't care how poor you are. This is the second time a story like this has been on digg, and its the second time I'll bury it. - SquigglyP, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4You should recycle your cans and bottles. We can sell condoms here in the US anywhere as well, it's legal. The 'fundamentalists' just like to pretend that kids don't have sex and thus don't need condoms.
oh, and overthrow your government, M'kay? - arjie, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2HIV is different. AFAIK, it can't survive outside the human body for long.
http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/qa/qa35.htm - marcee, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2The 10 cent (of yuan) comes from recycling companies, not especifically the Government. I do sell the plastic bottles I use in China, or give them to one of this "recyclers"
- Lavarock, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2facepalm.jpg
- Lavarock, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2dugg for good suggestion
- meachen, on 11/30/2007, -1/+33" average.....won't even touch the sides
- RandomGorilla, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Burned feet, lead poisoning, used condoms in your hair, poisoning from several different things injested.... Sounds like someone's been swimming off of the Jersey shore.
- Midoc, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Buried for being old.
- kfconme, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3now she can't complain when I cum in her hair.
