- bjornski, on 05/03/2009, -2/+32A salted apricot at the center? That sounds disgusting.
“Yeah, that’s what kids want in their candy. Fruit. Why don’t you put sunflower seeds in the Ding Dongs while you’re at it?” - pookydirt, on 05/03/2009, -0/+23I'm not sure I understand how lead got in there...
- pookydirt, on 05/03/2009, -0/+17Well, lead from Chinese imports in toys seems more understandable, as it's using low grade and inexpensive materials and composites/amalgams to actually manufacture and create the toys.
This is food. And I'm not sure how lead could be introduced to candy. I mean, there are no ingedients on any list anywhere that would call for lead or a lead-containing product. I had time to think about it overnight, and my assumption now is that it must be the molds and machining they are using. That's only a guess, though. - Atario, on 05/04/2009, -2/+16I don't understand how Mexico thinks chili pepper and salt are candy flavors.
- a3r0, on 05/04/2009, -0/+13"King Midas Inc. -- Everything we import turns to lead"
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -1/+12Lax Mexican safety standards, caused by corruption and profiteering.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -2/+12In this particular case, it looks like a Mexican company is being "attacked" because there happens to be LEAD IN THEIR FOOD PRODUCT.
- bjornski, on 05/03/2009, -0/+7Very true, but it still doesn't mean it's good.
http://www.bad-candy.com/ - slidewolf, on 05/04/2009, -1/+8" a caramel lollipop with a salted apricot in the center"
yeah cause kids are kicking down the ***** doors of the bodegas to buy those nasty ***** - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -1/+7I prefer my lollipops with melamine
- TheMadCow, on 05/04/2009, -1/+6Too much lead in your food does that. We learned that early and stopped doing it.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5I doubt the US wants to extend their social services and entitlement net to include Mexico.
- u8myfoood, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5Salt adds a contrasting flavor, it's actually quite good in moderation. Too much and it will corrupt the flavor, just enough and it compliments the dish/candy/etc. nicely.
Also look at many baking batters, many of them contain salt, even when you don't really taste it, but it makes a difference if you don't add it. - BertaButter, on 05/03/2009, -0/+5lol
- redrabbit, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5At Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, I remember when I was little they had lollipops with real bugs inside that you were supposed to eat. No idea if they still have those, and I was always too chicken to try one. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -1/+5Cool just in time for The Origins of Wolverine. So all the kids can get the enough lead to grow their own claws.
- charm803, on 05/04/2009, -3/+7Poor kids these days.
I grew up in the 80's, way back when we used to play outside in the dark and my mom had to yell my name when it was time to come home.
Kids now have to worry about everything, from lead in their food to lead in their toys.
I ate lots of Mexican candy when I was young, and I'm doing a-ok!
80's, I appreciate you more and more. - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4Tamarind: a slap in the face of children in the Third World.
- redrabbit, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4Sucks for Mexico :(
- anarchist101, on 05/03/2009, -2/+6"WHY is Mexico being attacked in the media? What is really going on here?"
Good questions.
We must keep this in mind in regards to any MSM coverage. The main stream media's choice of what to cover and how to cover it, is seldom or perhaps never without a hidden agenda. - scubachef11, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4They sell spicy chicken lollipops. You shouldn't be surprised.
- eclectro, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4A lot of cookware has glazes that contain lead, which will leach out under the right circumstances. Amazingly you can find dishes still being sold in stores that have a lead containing glaze. Congress is working on a bill to deal with it.
- Hedison, on 05/03/2009, -0/+4Dugg. Really important info to get out there
- kansoki, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4actually its, first the drug wars, then the flu, then the earthquake, then this... one hell of an unlucky country
- Claverhouse, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4It's possible that their government is rather incompetent. Most governments are --- which has it's good side --- but the Mexican experience indicates that they are in a league of their own, due to their institutions being set-up in such a way that they can't ever win. It is not merely North Americans, nor the Mexican wealthy, who have solely created this state of affairs; but the populist and leftist parties and elements, and the masses who have been duped into aiding their own subjugation, are also guilty. This is a country that rejected a harmless emperor in preference for half a century under one man; then had a revolutionary government for another half century which decided to institute permanent revolution by just sitting down very quietly and arguing with itself.
The good side to *that*, from a non-latin viewpoint, is that they won't be that successful at attempting any fabled Reconquista in the near future. - dropfry, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4Next time you eat an apple or watermelon hit one bite with a little bit of salt. You might like it. If you do then look for a special chili, lime salt mix to add to your fruit. Also, here in the states we do weird ***** with candy, grasshoppers, bacon, goo that comes in a plastic nose and looks like boogers...
- drmangrum, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3Luck has nothing to do with it.
Their Drug War problems are simply a lack of trustworthy law enforcement. They can blame the US all they want, but the US doesn't have death in the streets and neither does Canada.
The Flu is due to substandard farms. Corporations move their business to Mexico because of the cheap labor and the very lax health codes. Had Mexico created and enforced health codes, the problem probably wouldn't have happened. It would have been severely mitigated at the very least.
The earthquake is the only one that is just bad luck. However, they've known about the fault line. It's like when people complain about earthquakes in California, tornadoes in Kansas, or Hurricanes in Florida. I can take only so much crying about people that live there. If you chose to live in an area that is prone to natural disasters, then you have to deal with that risk eventually.
As to the lead in the food; Again, this is a symptom of poor health codes and a complete lack of oversight. Completely preventable. - s0nicfreak, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3Yeah kids don't want fruit, they want candy flavors that have the names of fruit but taste like if you mixed 2% of that fruit with 98% different chemicals.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3yeah they sell them in texas. we have chili coated grass hoppers too.
- Rudegar, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3thats heavy
- digggggggggg, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2wat
- s0nicfreak, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2Maybe a lot of what YOU eat is...
- masterstghm, on 05/04/2009, -5/+7Is importing food from the likes of Mexico and China really a good idea?
- drmangrum, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2[Citation Needed]
- TheMachine1, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2"advised to consult their doctor"
And a lawyer. - drmangrum, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2Except that lead is a very soft metal. It will only mildly annoy their targets instead of eviscerating them.
- BBE1965, on 05/03/2009, -9/+10Poor Mexico. First the flu, now this. Can't wait to hear the right wing talk show hosts' takes on this.
- Crucible1001, on 05/04/2009, -2/+3Their food is no different than anywhere else. A lot of what you eat is from China and Mexico.
- GrooTheWanderer, on 05/04/2009, -1/+2I wonder if a "salted apricot" is anything like a salty plum. Everyone was crazy about those when I was at school - maybe it's not quite as revolting as it sounds.
- publiclurker, on 05/04/2009, -1/+2I picked up some Pixy Stixs at a local Mexican grocery store once. Turns out my kid's don't like chillies and lime :-(
- charm803, on 05/04/2009, -1/+2Time for some online sleuthing!
Remember, it was INVESTIGATIVE journalists who uncovered Watergate and the link between cancer and cigarettes and it was a team of high school students who finally out Edgar Ray Killen behind bars, as he was found guilty of manslaughter for the murders of three civil rights activists based on their research.
No reason why MSM needs to have all the fun. - bjornski, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1I'm intrigued...
- Oea420, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1Bah, was hoping for something better than lead
*sucks on his actiq lolly* - digggggggggg, on 05/04/2009, -1/+2Mexican candy is disgusting by definition. Lime powder, tamarind, chili powder, and copious amounts of salt should not be in candy.
- bjornski, on 05/03/2009, -6/+7I can imagine Glenn Beck running with this one.
"They're trying to poison your children! Close the border!" - Arghblarg, on 05/04/2009, -0/+0From what I hear, the US doesn't even want to extend their social services and entitlement net to include AMERICANS. :p
- brinkofjon, on 05/04/2009, -1/+1Mexicans are a clean and industrious people with a strong work ethic and an overall commitment to the high standards of quality for which their known.
- scrollertroller, on 05/04/2009, -1/+1great, now i need something else to suck on
- clvngodess, on 05/03/2009, -5/+5Obviously you are looking at your candy coated treats with a very narrow world view. LOL. Kids around the world eat all sorts of wacky stuff combined with fruit, sugar, hot spices and salt. It stimulates the tongue to have all this stuff and textures too! Hell of a lot more fun that plain old boring Ahmarkin candy. Seriously.
