- dalittle, on 11/10/2008, -3/+21A better prevention would be to eat better and exercise.
- shervin123, on 11/10/2008, -0/+12I thought Flu shots were just a government conspiracy to inject us with some ***** that will turn us into zombies one day?
- Narcism, on 11/10/2008, -3/+14Congratulations. you have no idea what a flu shot is.
- swern425, on 11/10/2008, -1/+9How is anyone not at risk for the flu? You'd have to have no social interaction to completely avoid risk.
- munkey, on 11/10/2008, -1/+9I got mine today and it was free...
- IronTek, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7Welcome to Digg.
- Mahoney07, on 11/10/2008, -3/+10Did flu shot givers pay for this study?
- Slizzo, on 11/10/2008, -1/+7Guess you missed the Flu epidemics of the past century. Oops.
- azwethinkweizm, on 11/10/2008, -0/+6Diggers apparently think that if you eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stay clean that you will not contract the flu virus.
Diggers are dumb. Viruses do not reject someone because they are healthy. - meghalc, on 11/10/2008, -4/+9Is this the best they can come up with to sell more Flu Shots?
Now, they need to start working on cures for cancer and other fatal diseases. - swern425, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5My shot was free also; I'm sure my work paid for it in some way, but until my premiums go up I'll consider it free.
- cookiebalz, on 11/10/2008, -4/+9Look everyone, I am usually impressed with Diggers' intelligence. But the comments so far are inane.
1. Flu shots reduce the risk of infection with influenza virus, which for older people can prevent secondary pneumonias which can be fatal, near-fatal, or just damn serious. For younger people, they'll do the same but the effects are more like helping you avoid disruptions in your life (missing a week of work) or infecting others.
2. This is a case-control study, which tries to match groups of subjects to deduce a conclusion...but such studies are ABSOLUTELY inadequate in "proving" any causal link. MANY confounding variables (e.g. people who get flu shots exercise more, have a different diet on average, have active jobs) are likely to affect the conclusions here. That said, the study generates ideas for further testing.
BTW aspirin isn't harmless as it dramatically affects platelet (clotting cells) function-- it arguably has a much greater potential for harm than a flu shot. And it is important to know who pays for a study to be carried out-- but IF the science is good, and the question valid, the result obvious and conclusive, who cares? - dieboldcracy, on 11/10/2008, -2/+6ummmm, not quite, but yer on to something.
- Bronowyn, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4Influenza kills several *thousand* people a year.
Fixed that for ya!
Citation from the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/flu/downloads/ ... - SkippyDoorknob, on 11/10/2008, -4/+8That doesn't necessarily help if you have one of a number of genetic or autoimmune disorders that greatly increase your risk of clots. (although it doesn't hurt either)
- wildest, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3good that oldies are drinking them down then
- Thuktun, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Wouldn't it be amusing if this was caused by the thimerosal in the vaccine?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thimerosal_controvers ... - munkey, on 11/10/2008, -1/+4HA! I literally JUST got back from getting one among other shots too... measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, whooping cough.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -2/+5I love it. Take cholesterol medicine when you are healthy and get flu shots even if your not at risk for the flu. Whats next viagra for sexually functional males.
- XxtraLarGe, on 11/10/2008, -8/+11Less harmful & cheaper: Aspirin.
- BigWorldBear, on 11/10/2008, -2/+5Flu shots target certain flu bugs. With absolutely no certainty as to the type of flu bug that will be prevalent during the season, getting a shot seems nothing more than a crap shoot......and you still hear stories about how the shots themselves make plenty of people sick.....why again does science recommend them?
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -1/+4Sorry, dying from the flu was what I meant to say.
- azwethinkweizm, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3You don't even know what a flu shot is!
When you get a flu shot, they are injecting the flu virus into but a dead strain. This lets your white blood cells identify the dead virus and it allows it to build antibodies to that strain.
Next time, why don't you do read up on stuff or actually know what you're talking about before you speak. - inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3I don't care if the Flu shot makes you poop gold, I ain't getting one!
- schnikies79, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3I don't have a problem being injected with it and I'm a chemist with a background in metal toxicology.
Read the real science, not the garbage on Bob's blog and wikipedia. - cheezerman, on 11/10/2008, -3/+5Yes, it does help.
- smallchaz, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2The flu shot sucks. Try aloe vera.
- cookiebalz, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2"seems nothing more than a crap shoot"
- Yes, but at least some people are thinking about this crap shoot: try http://www.who.int/csr/disease/influenza/recommend ...
"make plenty of people sick"
- reactions seen in fewer than five percent of cases
"why again does science recommend them?"
avoid complications of influenza, decline in physical functioning, and even death in older patients or those with other medical problems.
look up: Prevention and control of influenza. Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), 2007 - smittysize, on 11/11/2008, -1/+3psychological operation to further advance the stated goal of dumbing down humanity / reducing the population of the planet. just go about your daily lives, back to your bread and circus.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2Curing obesity and the flu at the same time?
- sockpuppets, on 11/10/2008, -2/+4What's with the rapid increase of ***** idiots on Digg lately?
- kday, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3From Wikipedia:
"Overall, the benefit of influenza vaccination is clearest in the elderly, with vaccination in children of questionable benefit. Vaccination of adults is not predicted to produce significant improvements in public health. The apparent contradiction between vaccines with high efficacy, but low effectiveness, may reflect the difficulty in diagnosing influenza under clinical conditions and the large number of strains circulating in the population."

I haven't had Flu shots since my mom made me get them when I was a child. I do not plan on getting flu shots in the near future. I will let my body fight viruses naturally. I do not believe in Flu shots and think they can have inherent risks. I hope my fellow diggers can respect my point of view. - b0neman, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2That last bit, "stay clean" *is* the way. If you can avoid touching doors, wash your hands after using the toilet, wash your hands before you eat, be careful of what you eat e.g. no slimy MikeyDees or KFC.
Flu shots are not required medicine. They're preventative, possibly but certainly not required. I haven't had a flu shot for my entire adult life. The last time I caught a flu-like disease was about 12 years ago. I think Vegas and whipped cream on strippers had more to do with that though... - DDDavinnn, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2BUT IT STINGS!!!!
- specialbuddy1, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3If we are so dumb then why do doctors tell you to eat healthy, exercise, and wash hands to avoid being sick?
- spyd3rweb, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2Several sounds like a lot.
- macslut, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2And 9/11...lots and lots of 9/11.
- kday, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3"look up: Prevention and control of influenza. Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), 2007"
With respect, that information promoted by the CDC. The CDC is a government organization that is interested in promoting flu vaccines, not discrediting them. The vaccine industry is a big industry, and the last thing the CDC wants to do is destroy it.
There are also lots of studies that find that flu vaccines provide little to no benefits. You might want to look at those too. - rath01, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2"Flu Shots May Cut Risk of Blood Clots Forming in Veins" ...
"They also may not, MWUHAHAHHAA!!!" - painting, on 11/10/2008, -2/+3sure it does.
- Wakuko, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2Hear hear!
That's the sound of 20M sheeps running to get their flu shots and the cash registers of BigPharma going cha-ching!

Sheeple 0 - kday, on 11/11/2008, -1/+2Whether or not Mercury causes autism, I am not having high levels of an extremely toxic heavy metal injected into me.
I'll stick to natural remedies and vitamins, thank you. - Balanced, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2Influenza kills several people a year.
- schnikies79, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2No you really don't marv0 or you wouldn't be posting that. Google or not.
- a3r0, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2I hope you got a flu shot, then.
- kday, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2Here is an interesting YouTube clip. A guy calls a vaccine manufacturer, and asks several questions about flu shots.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az5aAwr4ugE - sark666, on 11/11/2008, -1/+2tell that to this guy
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/20 ... - marv0, on 11/10/2008, -2/+3I know exactly what it is, thanks to the power of the googles. I just think that my own body can handle fighting it off. It isn't a mandatory shot like MMR, so clearly it isn't something that is actually needed. It's just a way to get money from companies who are afraid of losing money and time from their employees getting sick, and mothers worrying for their kids.
- specialbuddy1, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2When was there an influenza epidemic? I'm talking about the common flu BTW and not some special variety that this shot has no control of.
