- shapattack, on 02/07/2008, -0/+23This sounds like women's supermarket rack drivel to me.
- harriman714, on 02/07/2008, -0/+20you are fat and ugly and no one loves you........go workout!
- clkou, on 02/07/2008, -3/+12On thought I have about exercise: you need to have a paradigm shift from exercise is something you NEED to do to something you HAVE to do. Have you ever forgot to go to sleep, eat, use the bathroom, go to work, or pick up the kids after school? Hopefully not. You need to put exercise into the same level of priority as those things.
John Wanamaker said, "People who cannot make time for recreation are obliged sooner or later to find time for illness."
How true, John ... how true. - Typhoon2009, on 02/07/2008, -3/+12What I hate about working out is that everyone, EVERYONE, seems way more fit than me. Doesn't help with the motivation, especially when you've been working out in gym class for 4 months and get no gains.
- Teanuh, on 02/07/2008, -0/+9I think the biggest thing is the excuses. There are really no valid excuses for not working out. I used to go from, "oh, too cold outside" to" too early" to "too dark, to late" etc... There is no excuse. Don't want to go outside? work out at home, you don't even need equipment or anything, running up and down the stairs for a reasonable amount of time is good enough, if not better. Of course, it has to be done consistently, and you have to push yourself. And instead of just saying to yourself "I'll start tomorrow, or maybe next week," do it right then and then. After that, piece of cake.
- NatashaCall, on 02/07/2008, -2/+9Thanks. I've been sick for over a week and needed motivation to get back to my Yoga, free-weights, and walking today. Perfect timing!
- mrfish, on 02/07/2008, -2/+8Your right. Here's 5 REAL reasons to get you motivated. I actually thought these up this morning to get me to the gym at 4am.
1) Your fat and your going to die sooner then your siblings. thereby, you won't have the last word.
2) Although people outwardly like you, at least half of them will think less of you because of your size. It's society and has nothing to do with your self esteem (ego?). Why do you think so many fat people try to be funny to make up for it?
3) Sex with fat people sucks. It's sweaty, blubbery and smelly. If you don't believe me, stand in front of a mirror and start jumping up and down naked and tell yourself if that's something you want to make love too! or get it over with fast!
4) People think they can take advantage of you because they think less of you and your missing out on some good deals. Ever see a fat chick get free drinks at the bar?
5) Sex is better when your built because your partner will be more into it. Think about what motivates yourself to be attracted to someone for sex and you'll get the idea.
See, I may be a bit of a masochist but at least I'm a realist. - popltree2, on 02/07/2008, -1/+6Wait...so there is a LifeHack and a LifeHackER?
- ShuttleDisaster, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5i hate going to the gym with friends...I find that I have a much better workout if I'm alone..no spotting, no talking, just concentrating on my own workout while listening to music rather than wasting energy elsewhere.
- ilkeryoldas, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdX_OBUeHb4
I'd rather be a couch potato! - codehkr77, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5that worked for me...
/me puts on his running shoes - DistantBL, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5Remove the comma from that last sentence and you've got yourself a deal.
- girlasaurusrex, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Stare at yourself naked in the mirror twice a week until you like how your body looks? ***** off!
The problem is, people really don't care about how healthy their bodies are. They just want to be pretty. Thanks, Cosmo. - fishrjv, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4Honestly probably the best habit to have is try to exercise or go to the gym in the morning. You're usually exhausted after work/class.. and working out in the morning actually wakes you up and keeps you alert for the rest of the day. Not to mention you'll feel better about yourself by at least getting one thing accomplished ;-)
- robbob, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3What do you mean AGAIN?
- KSUdesigner, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3You probably shouldn't be eating cake after working out, kinda defeats the point of the workout. ;-)
- bbqsalad, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Completely agree.
- bbqsalad, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2It normally takes almost loosing your life or something bad happening to your body to motivate you into caring about it. People care so much about there financial health and little about there physical and mental health.. And thats what really matters.
- metalgel, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2i pretty much use all those reasons already to motivate me. i started to diet in december and started working out two weeks ago 5:30am-7:30am with weights, pushups/situps, and then cardio. ive lost 10lbs :)
going after hours is a bitch though, like if i dont wake up in the morning and i go after work at like 7:30pm then im at the gym with a bunch of crowded "New Years Resolutioners" and then the people who actually ARE fit and using up all the equipment. not only is it a waste of time, but i just get this paranoid feeling like im being watched the entire time and critiqued by what im doing almost like its high school all over again, its rather uncomfortable.
or just shell out a couple hundo for the bench and weights and do it at home, either way just do it, youll feel great! - inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2if you're interested in bing thin and / or losing weight, the thing to do is cardio, not weightlifting, though weightlifting will help. I see too much talk of weightlifting here ... good cardio (40 -60 min a day) combined with restricted diet will shed those pounds VERY fast.
Also, beer, cold drinks and liquor makes you fatter than almost anything. - deepdiggdude, on 02/07/2008, -2/+4People should consider restricting caloric intake after dark as well as exercise. Six months ago I stopped eating full dinners and the result was dramatic. I went from a chubby 202 down to a slim 175. I haven't felt or looked this good since high school 27 years ago. So get out and burn calories but cut out the late big-meal and you will be amazed at the progress you make. The best part is that I eat whatever I want for breakfast and lunch.
- ShuttleDisaster, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2no, he is right. Eating before bed means that you're not burning as many calories, because your metabolism slows while you're sleeping...so it's more likely those calories will be turned to fat while sleeping than while active.
- MortalynFlux, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2He is indeed correct. He's not deluding himself if it worked for him and he lost 30 lbs.! The tradition in many countries is to eat a good breakfast, a heavy lunch, and a light dinner. Then they go for a walk. They have more time during the day to burn those calories.
In America, we skip breakfast, eat a quick lunch, a heavy dinner, and a late snack. You burn fewer calories while you sleep, and you don't digest your meal as well. This is probably why Americans are so damn fat. - moontime, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2I lost 36 pounds just by cutting out anything with high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils and working out 20-45 minutes a day.
You have to read labels, the HFCS is in everything, even bread. I shop at the health food store now. You also have to avoid MSG because it tricks your brain into thinking you are still hungry, as well as being generally bad for your health. - s0nicfreak, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2I have actually forgotten to sleep, eat, and use the bathroom before...
- bdbr, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2Eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom are lousy analogies because your body will force you to do them whether you want to or not. In many ways its the complete opposite with exercise, because your body tries to conserve energy and NOT exercising is probably the instinctive action.
But you were right on about making it something you "have to do", like going to work. Just as working allows you to live in a decent house, exercise allows you to stay healthy. Not exercising is like spending more than you make - eventually it will catch up with you. - RealHyperX, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2rubbing one off 4 times a day is like a 30 minute workout. Just FYI.
- bbqsalad, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1For those looking for some motivation go check out the bodybuilding.com forums (not just for bodybuilders). They have some amazing stories on there and loads of great info on the main site. I have found some of their articles really useful.. Many of you are great with technology and researching things. The key is to obsess with this much like you do other things. Gain all the knowledge you can and put it to use.
- stevenhorner, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1I used to be fit and ran regularly but stopped when I had some health problems, ironically when I was the fittest I had ever been. Now I'm trying to get back into exercise, but spend more time procrastinating about exercise than actually doing it. Just entered myself in a Half Marathon in 3 months and am spending the rest of that weekend at a posh hotel and spa. This should be the motivation I need!
- deepdiggdude, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1To be clear, I don't fast after dark, I just don't eat a big meal. Mortalynflux is right, we should reverse the order of our meals.
- bdbr, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1I've been exercising regularly for a year and I still hate it. My "irresistible offer" was having cholesterol and triglycerides at a level that doesn't risk premature death. Actually I had just got finished running when I saw this article.
The stuff about exercise making you more productive and mentally alert aren't complete ***** either, actually. I do notice a difference...but its very, very subtle. - bbqsalad, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I love the gym and go 4 times a week.. There are a ton of super hot older women there who motivate me to run that extra mile. It is damn hard getting the motivation to go and it literally took a near death experience to get it. Once you get into the groove of going on a regular basis you begin to crave it and love the euphoric feeling you get afterwards.. Not to mention the boost of self confidence. Switch to 6 smaller meals a day and watch out for fried foods, Drink plenty of water and pack on protein to keep muscles from eating themselfs.
- Clumber, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1No one? Really? Not even my dogs? ~~lower lip quivers~~
Fine, off to the gym with me then. - cuntmate99, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1me + weed + exercise = system malfunction
- bdbr, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1Assuming you're a morning person, yes. I'd just as soon get kicked in the nuts every morning.
- zeiben, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1"lifehack" what is this ripoff derivative *****?
btw - everyone, check out my great viral video site: YouToob, along with my great bookseller shop: congo.com, my social bookmarking site: Delvve, etc.. - lightningrod220, on 02/07/2008, -0/+16. Stand naked in front of a large mirror while doing jumping jacks, and a sound effects machine plays "boing! boing!" over and over.
- bbqsalad, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1Save the smoking for after the gym.. you will enjoy it more if you treat it like a reward.
- Jenovaside, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1as soon as he said "again", I knew it was not for me.
- duggreen, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Why are we talking about aerobics and weight training as if they were the only way to get fit? The very best forms of exercise are all games. People tend to train much harder when they are competing against another warm body in a game. Games have built in motivation, not just on the immediate level, but in the long run as well. Even a game of table tennis can really get the blood pumping, if you are a fairly good player.
- whojaybe, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1But I'm hungry!!! Wait, let me look in the mirror again... okay... fine, I'll hit the gym lol
- MortalynFlux, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I got tired of competing with the New Year's Resolutioners as well.
A $10.00 pull up bar, the perfect pushups, and a captain's chair can replace thousands of dollars of gym equipment. Plus you can take the first two with you. - wilf_brim, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1So, basically, it's this:
Get naked and stand in front of the mirror. View you fat, disgusting self. Do something about it. - Buddhist, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1As they say, a good body starts in the kitchen.
That is to say, it's more about your diet and what you put into your body than it is the force with which you exert yourself during a workout. - razorsedge555, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1Buried for referring to Naruto and Taijutsu in the same post.
- razorsedge555, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1"Make yourself an irresistible offer." Did anyone one else thought that said "irresistible otter'?
- Grok22, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1So true, I skipped my morning run this morning. It was raining and 30 out, i know bad excuse. but i felt like ***** all day and haven't gotten anything done, plus there is the guilt on top of that.
- Grok22, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1no matter how hard or frequent i work out i still feel that way. i am currently training for a marathon and even though i go running every morning at 8am i still feel out of shape. i guess it come down to goals, clearly i am in good shape, but not in good enough shape to run a marathon.
- pauleric, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1A year is pretty good, but keeping it up will be hard. You should probably find some kind of exercise you enjoy more. Running can be boring, especially if that's all you do, and you run the same course all the time. There's racquetball, skipping rope (not as boring as it sounds and you can watch tv), bicycling, swimming, basketball, hiking & wall/rock climbing, just playing with your dog (and he won't let you skip walking him). And that advice about doing it all alone may be good for some things, but for something like basketball, if you're in a league, you have to go all the time.
