- MakiNavaja, on 10/11/2007, -29/+149Tell me again how stopping a body's natural functions can be a good thing... ?
- crackah, on 10/11/2007, -9/+83Oh yeah! no more sad week for me!
- mistermanoli, on 10/11/2007, -20/+91uh.. anyone else think that this is a little crazy? it seems like a really extreme thing to do to your body.. i personally would never get close to a pill that would make my balls stop producing sperm.. i mean.. women are SUPPOSED to have periods..
and just cause its FDA approved.. does not mean it is safe.. i would hope we all know this.. - awesome19, on 10/11/2007, -10/+66wow! that means more sex
- EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+60@farnazn (#6820423)
I think the first comment was sarcastic.
Fundamentalists are often opposed to contraception on similar grounds to abortion, which is irrational because only a few of them actually act as abortofaceants, and then only very rarely. Much better to let women get pregnant, apparently. - Stonedonkey, on 10/11/2007, -2/+50In other news, reports of nighttime headaches have risen by 200%.
- BassMastr, on 10/11/2007, -15/+61@awesome
Yeah, but fewer blowjobs... - Crispin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37If it's anything like Depo-Provera (the birth control shot that stops periods) every man should be weeping. My wife was on it for about a year and it turned her (and just about every woman we've talked to who's been on it) into a hormonal banshee. Their sex drive drops, they start to put on weight, and they get irritated and hostile at every little thing. (Yes I know it sounds like marriage.) I'll take a week of bleeding over never-ending crazy anytime.
- jonesin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Other birth control methods stop periods too. They've had a birth control shot that you take once every few months that kept her from getting a period for the whole 2 years she was on it.
- farnazn, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I don't think I like this idea at all...don't get me wrong I would KILL to not ever have a period before but,....
A period is the bodies natural way of getting rid of the inner layer of the uterus that potentially was going to be used for growing a fertilized egg. What happens when the hormone that causes this "cleansing" is messed up and what happens to the things that are supposed to be cleared out just as it has been for millions of years... - thedr96run, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27I'm only happy, if it takes away the PMS too!
- macfanboi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28@Tawni
Great! Can I get your number? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -15/+36The tampon and rag industry is not going to like this.
I'm sure the fundys are going to be all over this.
The propaganda fundie express should began rolling out the BS right about...Now. - Tawni, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26Yes, if it worked as advertised there would be more sex and depending on the woman just as many BJs. Personally I enjoy giving BJs just as much as sex so that would never be a factor.
- M4tt3r, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26@rnwen2750
Who said anything about sex.
Now we can at least watch the game with out getting screamed at to do something around the house. :) - AJH16, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24Personally I'd consider myself fairly fundamental and I have to say I see no problem what so ever with contraceptives, since they prevent the egg from ever being fertilized. I believe that the whole anti-contraceptive thing is more of a Catholic view than a fundamental view.
- liah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14To be quite honest, it would just make me super paranoid every month because I'd be wondering if I was pregnant, then I'd get overly bitchy because I'd be stressed and so on and so forth. Which would kind of make the lack of PMS part obsolete.
It'd be the most wonderful thing in the world to have never had a period, though. Unfortunately the cons outweigh the pros in my book :( - calvmari, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15"Many [dropped out of the study] because of the irregular and unscheduled bleeding and spotting that can replace scheduled menstruation."
Yeah... the tampon industry is safe. - hrhs556x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12You should ask for Jenny
- VinceNoir, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15@derkaas
Tell that to the guys who are trying to interfere with birth control prescriptions "in the name of god":

These folks are 100% christian fundamentalists and NOT catholics. Sorry, but the fundamentalists went insane during the Reagan era and have only gotten worse in the intervening 20+ years. - andshewas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Many of the comments I've read are from people saying something to the effect of "stopping a body's natural functions" and how it couldn't possibly be a "good thing."
While I completely agree, take a look at antiperspirant. Let's all fill our armpits with aluminum so we don't sweat. That's stopping a body's natural function, is it not? Look at shaving razors...you all expect your women to be somewhat hairless, do you not? That's stopping a body's natural function.
I would go on, but I'm bored with this already. I do not agree with never getting a period again, even though I suffer immensely for one week a month. It could be worse. I could go bankrupt on all the pregnancy tests I'd no doubt be buying because my natural pregnancy indicator wouldn't be functioning.
Just for the record, I do NOT use antiperspirant. There are only a few alternative brands that I've found that are strictly deodorant. My body is supposed to sweat, but it doesn't have to smell bad. - rrbaker, on 01/15/2009, -4/+151. This sounds completely f'ed to me. It's a natural process of the body. Why would any woman -- granted, I'm a guy and don't have to deal with PMS and feminine hygiene products -- want to completely stop this? It's unnatural.
2. No one wants to hear about your "blowjob week." Shut it.
3. Your girlfriend is a bitch for a week out of every month because you keep making stupid PMS jokes. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Why am I surprised that over half of the comments to this story are immature jabs at women...
- sicapitan, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17Dude
what are you saying
blowjob week is finished!! - TubaTechno, on 10/11/2007, -10/+20How retarded is Digg these days. An scientific article that revolutionizes womens lives gets posted and the first comment makes fun of religion.....
You guys are pathetic. - TLAKABM, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15@MakiNavaja
Well, strong allergic reaction, for instance; where a person's natural reaction is to go into anaphylactic shock. This is a case where stopping one of your bodies natural functions is a good thing.
In fact, a large number of medical treatments involve stopping your bodies natural functions. I mean, you could even say things like seisures are 'natural functions'. You see, 'natural' does not mean 'good'.
Of course, a women's period is not dangerous, just inconvenient. But we already have birth control methods that mess with and stop periods. This isn't anything new. - confusednazgul, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I'd suggest you do a little research into human reproduction. On this, and similar, medications, a woman would not produce a uterine lining every month to shed. That is why she wouldn't have a period - there wouldn't even be anything that needs to be removed.
- djcgmcse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Actually a friend I know was on this pill for the test trial for the last few years and she loved it. I'm not a woman, so I can't pretend to even have a clue as to what they go through for any of this, but if a woman want's it, that's her perogative.
Also, if a woman stops taking this pill (even after serveral years), her cycle will emmediately go back to the normal period cycle. Obviously the extreme long-term affects are still unknown, but the trial has been going for almost 5 years and so far there hasn't been any extreme issues. Woman who've stopped taking it have gone right back to their normal cycle. The hormones in this pill are essentially the same ones in the pills that have been around for a long time. - TLAKABM, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12The Catholic Church is opposed to contraception. How is it a stereotype?
- confusednazgul, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12***** you, sir. Some of us women have had extremely painful periods for years and have every reason to want them to stop. If you knew anything at all about medicine, you'd know there's nothing unnatural about this. Is it unnatural to stop having periods due to pregnancy? I guess pregnancy is anti-woman as well!
- skunkops, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10A drug where the side effect of it working... and the side effect of it not working... are the same.
Interesting - android32, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Like foobar5892 said, it's kind of funny that weed's illegal still but they legalize and put on the market a drug in which 50% of the participants dropped out of because of "irregular and unscheduled bleeding and spotting". Amazing, simply amazing bureaucracy at work.
- rooftopsuicide, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10this is going to be how the real life 'Children Of Men' begins....
- bouche, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10PMS be-gone!
- katulatakulu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Through the years of mammalian / primate / human evolution, a female would usually be pregnant so would have had far fewer periods than modern women.
So fewer periods is more 'natural' in this sense. - brianala, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9What a lot of people fail to realize is that many women (myself included) are already doing this with their current form of contraception with no ill effect and have been for years, although it's not a "recommended use". Women have been stacking for as long as the pill has existed, and it's possible with other forms of birth control too.
And I can't believe anyone would question a woman's desire to want to take control of her body. Hell, if you had to bleed, cramp, retain water, suffer mood swings, hot and cold spells, and generally be in pain for a week out of every month, I think you'd look for any way to avoid that you can. It's not that periods are "wrong" or "bad" or that women need to be cured, it's a simple matter of convenience. That, and I don't have to worry about ruining all my nice fancy undies. - mauriziopetrone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9"Women who use Lybrel would not have a scheduled menstrual period, but will most likely have unplanned, breakthrough, unscheduled bleeding or spotting," Shames said. The bleeding can last four to five days and may persist for a year, he later added.
Uhm, this doesn't really sound like a very desiderable thing, does it? - Kumaku, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7My gf would be so paranoid using this product. The sales of pregnancy tests are going to explode.
- jbink303, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11I always thought there was something wrong with women that needed to be cured. Periods, apparently are a sickness.
Treatments for cancer: check.
Treatments for the flu: check.
Treatments for shingles: check.
Treatments for HPV: check.
Treatments for periods: check.
If you can't tell, I was speaking tongue-in-cheek.
Does it make anyone else incredibly upset that, despite years of progress, we are still telling women that they're defective because they menstruate... that they have a sickenss that needs treating? That, to me, is what pills are for. To prevent sickness and treat sickness.
Now I know, I know, it's very uncomfortable to have a period - but stuff like this just screams to me: let's not let women become more successful on the merits of being women, let's make women more like men.
There's a difference between men and women. That's a good thing. - Tawni, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8This pill is not very affective in ending periods. It can take up to 6 months for periods to stop all together and some women in their test studies still had spotting which can make any woman nervous. Until they have a it proven that this can stop periods all together I won't be switching.
- VinceNoir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9You know... something hit me this morning. It seems to me that many conservative men have a huge fear of women who actually enjoy sex. I don't mean the woman who will willingly have sex with her boyfriend or husband and have a good time. I mean women who know their bodies well, and get a huge amount of pleasure from sex to the point that they've tried almost every approach to getting that pleasure. Personally, I love women who go out of their way to experience sexual pleasure in a wide variety of ways. If they're out there looking for men with thicker penises, or they get into using really intense sex toys (either in size or intensity of the vibration, say the Sybian for example) and they get earth shattering orgasms from doing so, I'm 100% behind them.
But it seems that conservative men view these sorts of women as "sluts" or "whores". Now why is that? The same conservative men seem to have no problem being "sluts" or "whores" themselves in an effort to gain as much sexual pleasure as possible. But as soon as a woman does it, these guys just seize up in total fear and then put on a fake face of anger calling the woman as many degrading terms as possible. I just don't get what the problem is with letting women be in charge of their own sexual pleasure and letting them indulge in it. Hell, before we were married, I had no problem at all with my girlfriend banging her ex every so often. Why? Because sex does not equate to love. I knew she'd have just as good a time with him as she does with me. But when it comes down to who she wants to spend her life with, I knew the answer was me. There's a reason he's an "ex" and I'm her husband now.
You folks need to get it through your thick skulls that sex and love are two separate things. Sex is an enjoyable activity that can be somewhat connected to love. But frankly, I'd rather "*****" my wife than "make love" to her. And she feels that same way. There's nothing better than raw, unchained sexual pleasure. Leave the romance for special occasions or outside of the bedroom where it belongs. Do not confuse sex and love and you're life will be a whole lot easier. - LessThan3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I know a lot of women who just overlap their pills anyway to get rid of their period. And I'm on the Depo Provera shot and one of its great side effects was getting rid of my period. My doctor told me just to make sure I get enough calcium when I'm on it.
- jbink303, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7@confusednazgul
Because I bet every woman who takes this will have endometriosis. If anything, that argument just validates my previous post - endometriosis is something that needs to be treated - it is, indeed, a 'sickness' (a better word might be 'affliction'), and should be treated. I'm not saying this stuff shouldn't be used, just used for the right reasons...
I really, definitely, absolutely hate that some women are under this guise that they won't be good enough until they're men - I don't think many would come out and say that, but actions speak louder than words - primarily the action of doing away with menstruating, which is innately woman.I stand firm behind my conviction that women should be women, men should be men, and trans-sexuals should be trans-sexuals.
Women are not defective because they bleed with regularity. - EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9@farnazn (#6820176) "what happens to the things that are supposed to be cleared out just as it has been for millions of years..."
Or, at least since you were 12....
Actually, the main danger is not from the lack of uterine "cleaning" but from the lack of a monthly estrogen/progesterone cycle. This pill looks like it's just a continuous low dose of estrogen, which I imagine keeps your cycle frozen instead of emulating pregnancy.
Here's a better article:

I'm not a doctor, but since it hasn't been studied in teenagers at all (long-term development issues, etc..), I wouldn't recommend this for young women until it's more studied. - Tawni, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11@macfanboi
sure its 520- 867-5309 - andshewas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6A "dried-up bitch?" "after you plow her?"
I truly don't imagine you ever having a fulfilling sex life, sir.
You are an *****. - confusednazgul, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Unless you've ever experienced the excruciating pain of endometriosis, I don't think you're really allowed to act like you know anything about periods and why women would want them to stop.
- akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@ mistermanoli
well, if the woman was an athelete (say, an olympic swimmer or something), or a researcher who has to go on long trips to exotic and remote locales, or even a reporter on long assignment or something, i could totally see the need to suppress the menstrual cycle for an indefinite period of time. for one thing, her immune system won't be taking a monthly dip any more (the only time i ever get sick is during my period), and she won't have the smell of blood on her, in the case of an animal researcher or zookeeper or whatever. i could even see if she wanted to take a long vacation (say, a trip around the world), because sometimes it gets hard to find the neccessary feminine equipment in foreign places.
however, personally, as a normal, boring, 9-5 office working woman, i wouldn't want to suppress it. i'm already on regular pill, and it's drastically reduced my negative symptoms, and i think i would be constantly worried about being pregnant every time my boobs hurt a little or i gained a pound or two. plus, i like that i know nearly to the hour when i'll be starting my period versus surprise breakthrough bleeding and spotting.
i'm glad the fda approved it though, there's a lot of women out there who could really use something like that. - millerbrad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Actually, this drug isn't especially revolutionary. It's the same birth control, minus the 7 days of placebo pills in traditional contraceptives. For years, women have actually been simply skipping the placebo pills in their birth control to get this same effect (i.e. for medical reasons such as severe menstrual cramping).
The breakthrough bleeding or "spotting" can be avoided by taking a traditional birth control with a higher dose of ethinyl estradiol and skipping the placebo pills (Lybrel has 20mcg per dose; other pills have as much as 50mcg). Unfortunately, more ethinyl estradiol means more risk of blood clots, stroke, and the like.
Oh yeah.. I'm a pharmacist. -
