- Dujenwook, on 12/17/2008, -0/+29Yea, more weight to be shifted around as their lungs expand and contract.
- hnazareth16, on 12/17/2008, -0/+20Snoring does take a lot of work. I'm always winded in the morning.
- doublefelix, on 12/17/2008, -1/+18I bet I burn more calories dazedly trying to retrieve my pinned arm as I make my hurried exit.
- sabster, on 12/17/2008, -0/+15it's not doin too much for them though
- Snoopykiss, on 12/17/2008, -1/+14But surprise! They're still fat!
- BullHunter, on 12/17/2008, -2/+13What about people "with a" fat? Actually, it's not possible to sleep with a fat
- MilesyMiles, on 12/17/2008, -0/+10Zzz..nom..zzzz..nom..zzzz..nom...
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+10They also strain their hearts a lot more when snoring. There is more effort involved in breathing in (assuming lying on their backs) crossed with more fat tissue and "bulges" blocking the airway. Over time (years) this can lead to serious heart problems.
Not really worth the few calories burned. Get out and go for a walk, it will be healthier for you than snoring. - Fierdogg, on 12/17/2008, -1/+9The problem isnt with how many calories they burn. Its with how many they INTAKE!
- JoBeDream, on 12/17/2008, -1/+8Wait, What? (Obesity + Snoring = new exercise regime)? I think the obese would burn more calories, I don't know.... working out!?!
But nonetheless still an interesting study. - BadAsh71, on 12/17/2008, -0/+6I saw this yesterday and as a fat guy, I'm not buying it :)
- flashpointbob, on 12/17/2008, -0/+6I snore really loud, do I burn more calories than someone who quietly snores?
- allengeer, on 12/17/2008, -0/+6as a fat guy, i am going to go exercise... by taking a nap.
- painting, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5its offset by the fact that they are fat.
- DistantSecond, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5Except snorers are not really "resting" very well. Heavy snoring is caused by breathing obstructions, and often results in various levels of arousal (not that kind! that would be R.E.M. sleep, which heavy snorers and apnics are typically deprived of), which in turn causes heart-rate to increase. Basically, they burn more calories because they are in a constant state of waking up.
- Pahtcub, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5Funny how so many people use the terms "they, their, and those" and yet 64.5% of americans are considered obese. Denial? You be the judge.
- Griminald, on 12/17/2008, -1/+5Er.
Fat people have more body mass. More body mass means more calories involved to do anything.
Fat people burn more calories during sex too. Well, kind of. If they can get Slot A into Hole B and do it without crushing their partner's ribs. - thegrantman, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4They also crap more...so what.
- korea, on 12/17/2008, -1/+5someone got a grant for this?
thanks for nothing, science @ UC SF - Slothapotamus, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure why you're getting dugg down. I thought this was pretty funny. It's also true; they may be burning calories while they sleep, but it's offset by the amount of junk they fill their faces with while they're awake. Ergo, they don't technically lose any weight.
- Peko, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4I will bury you down.... for using.... too many ellipses. Not to mention.... you're not even doing them right....
It's traditionally 3 periods. Not normally a big deal if somebody screws up but it's just irritating when you keep doing it.
- falser, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4Man, fat people are so interesting.
- Menduksee, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4"People who snore may burn more calories while resting" or... rest less effectivly.
Fat people burn more callories doing evrything, period. - amnesiasoft, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4I thought we already knew this, since your basal metabolic rate and weight are positively correlated.
- Walwyn, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4Which In Turn, is Like Throwing a Deck Chair off of the Titanic
- kooredaan, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4Now I can tell my wife to let me keep snoring instead of poking me and telling me to turn....I can blame my fat on her. :D
- shaftbond, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3This is it right here. They found a correlation between people that burn more calories per day and people who snore. There is no evidence (at least from this study) that shows the snoring itself is the cause of the increase in calories burned. Fat people burn more calories in resting energy expenditure and fat people have more of a tendency for sleep disorder. My guess is the connection is fat people, not a direct relationship with snoring and calorie burn.
- mikbunn, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3Exactly. Fat people burn more calories doing everything. It's just more machinery to run.
- MrJ777, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3Obviously it doesnt make them burn enough calories.......they are still fat.
- msissio, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3So tell Yo Momma to keep on sleeping!
- Jabb0, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3This just in! Fat people burn more calories while crapping.
- deema1, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3See? I told you fat people aren't lazy.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -1/+4I guess fat people burn more calories while farting too.
Reason one: more fat, tighter excretory outlet - requies - more contraction of abdominal muscles - requires more energy.
Reason two: more fat, heavier body - requires - more more energy to tilt the body to the side to emit the flatulence.
And hence it's once again proved by the genius that fat people burn more calories while farting. - x060t, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3No honey, i don't wanna attend that gym. i'll workout at home. tonight. i promise.
- mangosinslo, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3well, if it was enough.. they wouldn't be fat for long, now would they?
- fludgesickles, on 12/17/2008, -0/+3"In fact, the larger you are the higher your metabolic rate, the amount of energy your body uses at complete rest, will be. This is because when your body is at complete rest larger people need more energy to pump the blood around the body and to keep moving. Just as a big car uses more fuel so a bigger person uses more energy."

Old news America! And it's not due to snoring either! - psykiv, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2I thought this would fall under the BMR concept?
Regardless, it's obviously making just little, if any, difference, because... uhm... oh yea... they're still fat? - BellaDigger, on 12/17/2008, -1/+3Fat people burn more fat because they are fat in the first place, I mean how could skinny people burn more fat than fat folks--stupid.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2I think the moral of the story is "Don't buy nasal strips."
- leethefilmer, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2Does this go for cats too?
http://innocentgirl.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/si ... - CoD4, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2don't tell me what?
- beesaretasty, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2Uh, doesn't aerobic exercise strain the heart more? Should I stop doing that?
- MrAsparagus, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2Good news for m-- For my.. Dog- YEAH DOG.
- allengeer, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2I really feel like I need to add a healthy dose of burned calories to my day. Now commence nap-time.
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2When doing aerobic exercise they can breath properly, therefore the heart can work as normal and keep up with oxygen demand, when breathing is restricted (snoring) this is not the case. The heart is strained and CO2 levels in the blood increase.
- xero69, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2it's because their kids are bouncing on their bellies like one of those moon jump inflatable things you see at children's birthday parties. Yup, burns lots of calories, yeah-huh
- rxbudian, on 12/17/2008, -2/+3Maybe that's why nature evolved snoring... to let fat people burn more calories....
- burnnbuild, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1That is hilarious I tell you!!
Usman

- Amadeus2490, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1I can just imagine all the kids on the playground making fun of the fat kid: "Go to sleep, fatty!"
