- twrife, on 11/14/2007, -2/+455*Spoiler* They're all bad for you.
- mattus, on 11/14/2007, -10/+199It compares portions of varying sizes, so it's a little hard to follow. It would have been more useful if the figures were normalised to 'per 100g' or something.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -2/+106I don't buy his opinion at the end of the chart -- he awards White Castle burgers "best" on the basis that they are smaller than other servings, despite having a higher per serving trans fat (actually, probably the highest). Dubious logic if you ask me.
- slashbot, on 11/14/2007, -3/+89*Spoiler*
The 'healthy' salads are often just as bad as the normal options - idc5, on 11/13/2007, -1/+66I got to stop getting drunk because that's the only time I eat these garbage foods...
- sonaboy, on 11/13/2007, -3/+64holy *****...Carl Jr.'s....hahahahaha. That stuff shouldn't even be referred to as food. It's liver and renal failure in a box.
- idc5, on 11/13/2007, -0/+561 slice of pizza has ~300 calories??? I used to be able to eat a whole pizza.....
- cJw314, on 11/14/2007, -2/+51SALADs don't kill people; DRESSINGS kill people. XD
- akatherder, on 11/13/2007, -1/+39I agree with his logic of comparing a sandwich at one restaurant with a sandwich at another restaurant. You aren't going to eat 100 grams of a double cheeseburger. You're going to eat the whole sandwich no matter where you go and what you order. Let's say a McDonalds hamburger is healthier per ounce than a BK hamburger. But let's say the McDonalds hamburger is significantly larger. You're still going to eat the whole hamburger and consume that much fat and calories.
White Castle is the big outlier in this. Their #1 value meal comes with 4 hamburgers, fries and a drink. So I would think it's fair to compare 4 White Castle burgers with one hamburger at other places, or leave them out of the comparisons. - unstop, on 11/14/2007, -7/+45The idea was to compare similar products rather than products of similar weight. One restaurant’s burger VS another’s, and one restaurant’s burger VS another of that same restaurant’s burgers. When people get fast food, they usually think in terms of “Should I get this burger or this burger?” rather than “Should I get this 100 gram burger, or should I get this 300 gram burger and eat 1/3 of it?” People tend to only buy fast food in terms of Burger A vs Burger B, Chicken Nuggets A vs Chicken Nuggets B, etc. and this comparison was done with that in mind.
I included weight so people could still see the difference in serving size. But to me, comparing them in terms of X grams of each product wasn’t going to be much use to anyone who was just going to eat 1 full order of whatever they ended up ordering, which I felt was most often the case. Unless people are bringing their digital food scales to McDonald’s, the only real level playing field for a comparison like this is burger vs burger, fries vs fries, etc..
With all of that being said though, I actually agree with you and definitely see how a per-gram comparison would be useful. I think at some point I'll probably do it. - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -3/+32"The Double Six Dollar Burger from Carl's Jr. contains an insane 1520 calories. That's not a typo. One sandwich contains more calories than some smaller females need... PER DAY."
Damn - that's good eatin'. - SnowPuffKing, on 11/14/2007, -4/+30Made me hungry.
- heathuff23, on 11/13/2007, -5/+30a website that rates fast food to determine which one is most healthy? Thats like rating the Bush family to determine who's the smartest :)
- MissingScrews, on 11/13/2007, -5/+29Where is Chick-Fil-A?
- staplez, on 11/13/2007, -1/+25There's no such thing as grade D meat. That's a myth made up by people to make fast food look worse than it is. The USDA has a minimum level of beef that's all above canner. http://www.snopes.com/food/prepare/badmeat.asp Yes fast food is bad, but let's not make stuff up either. Thank you.
- SpectralSounds, on 11/13/2007, -1/+25I don't eat fast food all that often, but at times I do. My bodily reactions are enough to compare and contrast the qualities between fast food restaurants though. For example, last time I ate McDonalds, I felt like I was dying from the inside out.
- skellener, on 11/13/2007, -2/+23Whole grain bread is a lot healthier than two double cheeseburgers. You ride your bike,, good for you. Those burgers and cheese aren't doing any good for your heart and arteries though. Stay off the fast food. Try some fresh fruit and vegetables.
- krets, on 11/13/2007, -2/+22Arby's has a sausage gravy biscuit!? Mmmmmm.. Graaaaaavy...
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -2/+21Just avoid them altogether.
Problem solved. - cmiller1, on 11/14/2007, -21/+39I'm sick of hearing about how unhealthy eating fast food is. Any meal you buy at a sit down restaurant, or even make yourself, is going to have fat and sodium, and guess what, both of those are essential to life, just like calories. You know what's loaded with carbs? Whole grain bread! My friends tell me I'm killing myself when I eat at mcdonalds twice a week, I stop in on my bikeride to class, eat two double cheeseburgers, then bike the rest of the 8 miles there, while those same friends proceed to sit at home and eat doritos, then get in their cars to get to work/class. What goes in must either get used or be turned to fat, macronutritional ratios should ideally be balanced, but mainly for performance reasons, you could survive on pure fat and still be slimmer than a lot of americans, the inuit did it, it doesn't really matter what you eat, if it's making you fat you're eating too much and/or not working enough off.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -4/+21The point here is that the comparison is inherently biased because a White Castle burger is much smaller than many other burgers, so saying it is the "best" is wrong. People obviously don't bring scales with them, but that's not the point here -- you would need to eat three White Castle burgers to be as "full" as eating some of the other burgers on the chart, so you are incorrect.
- emailingRob, on 11/14/2007, -0/+16You know what makes good salad dressing? A burger.
- GregLoire, on 11/13/2007, -1/+14STOP THE PRESSES! Larger hamburgers have more calories, and smaller hamburgers have fewer calories! Seriously, what's the point of labeling bacon cheeseburgers from White Castle as "healthier" when even the article itself just explains that it's the smallest burger? And, yes, as the article says, a double six dollar burger has more calories than a small woman should eat in a day. But has anyone ever seen a small woman try to tackle one of those things? I'm guessing it'd probably take her an entire day to eat it!
We all know that hamburgers are unhealthy. But this article tells us little more than the size of each one. And when was the last time that anyone complained about a typical fast-food hamburger being too large? - imightbewrong, on 11/13/2007, -0/+12wtf is carl jr's? and why are they killing people?
- g30ph, on 11/13/2007, -0/+12They don't have burgers and fries
- trouble916, on 11/13/2007, -0/+11I really think somebody needs to start a "good food fast" restaurant with a drive-through. I do not have time in the mornings to prepare a hot meal and despite cold food or leftovers for lunch. I would kill for a fast food restaurant that served a grilled seasoned chicken breast (not teriyaki) with brown rice and lightly grilled vegetables with olive oil... served with a drink for $5.95 served quickly and painlessly from a drive-in window.
- stupergenius, on 11/13/2007, -2/+13That's what I call value.
- flip360, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10Salsa makes a great salad dressing and is usually fat free.
- sinurgy, on 11/13/2007, -3/+13Not really...while they often are still high in fat and calories thanks to heaps of dressing, you're still getting essential vitamins and minerals that you would not get from a hamburger. I understand that a salad with thick ranch dressing is not as healthy as one without but it's still much better than anything else you'd likely order. Heck the fiber alone makes it worthwhile!
- GuyeNoir, on 11/13/2007, -2/+12IMHO, that makes the study worthless. Of course the larger portions are going to have more calories and fat; they're bigger! The most rediculous was saying white castle is the most healthy because of their small size. Yeah, and it takes about 4 or 5 of those burgers to equal a regular sized one. Multiply all of it fat and calorie content by 4 and it's much less healthy.
Buried - Mothrog, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10Have you ever seen anyone eat a single White Castle burger and then nothing else? Portion size matters because a portion that's 71 g and a portion that's 602 g are nowhere near comparable.
- grmclaren, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10Since the serving size varies so wildly in each category perhaps a calories / gram column would be a better reflection of the nutritional content. Yes having the total calories for each item is useful but in many cases apples aren't being compared to apples. Of course if you ate more apples and stopped eating at these diarrhea factories it would be less of an issue.
- steger, on 11/13/2007, -2/+11I'm sure chick-fil-a would've been the best for the nuggets and sandwich, since they are not processed pieces of chicken, but actual chicken breasts.
- raymore, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10Would have been better if they actually converted all the portions to the same gram weight, as it is misleading due to difference in portions and calories ratio, etc.
- stupergenius, on 11/13/2007, -0/+9Yeah, plus who eats just one? The last time I had White Castle I got my appendix taken out the next week, probably a coincidence but I take no risks! I only had one appendix, what's going to be next?
- ucbmckee, on 11/13/2007, -0/+9That's a reasonable presumption, but breaks down for things like White Castle, where you cited their burger as being the best. No one orders just one. I think they typically come in 3s and 6s.
- signal15, on 11/13/2007, -0/+9So is motor oil, but I don't see you eating that. Trans fats have a structure that our bodies are unable to break down, and they end up clogging our arteries, binding to cholesterol, and doing all sorts of other bad things. Saturated fat can be broken down by the human body, and ultimately be used as energy. Trans fats cannot.
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8I can't agree with citizen782's choice of words or negative sentiment, but Chik-Fil-A and its founder are known for making large contributions to politically active religious groups. But hey, if Starbucks can push liberal philosophy on coffee cups, why can't Chik-Fil-A keep their doors closed on Sunday?
- emjaymj, on 11/13/2007, -1/+9Actually I think his point is that nobody in their right mind thinks fast food is healthy. Therefore a choice to eat fast food is a conscious choice to eat unhealthy food, so the people who are preaching the unhealthiness of fast food are falling on deaf ears.
How would you like it if the fact that the sky is blue is a major news piece for the next decade? It's just obvious, there's no need to bother people with this information over and over again. - JDoorjam, on 11/13/2007, -1/+9mmmmm has........
- signal15, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8White castle will ***** kill you. There's a reason people have to be wasted to eat it.
- whatsupimphil, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8Tonight's $5 pizza night. I plan on eating a whole pizza.
- stupergenius, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8Haha true, I only ever go to Wendy's when I'm drunk or stoned, cause it's open late, unlike those taco fascists.
- lasko, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8i don't see how being closed on sunday makes them "neocon bitches of the worst kind". i think it's great for their employess that they do that. to me it shows that they care about their employees more than other fast food chains.
- bigtizzle, on 11/13/2007, -1/+9How about something that shows some of the Mexican food choices? If I eat fast food it's almost always either Chipotle or Taco Bell
- Surfrock66, on 11/13/2007, -2/+10Only in America, the land of the free, do people want to legislate against allowing me to clog my own arteries by my own doing knowing full well the risk. Don't judge me, just keep sending my friends to Iraq to die over some other goddamn definition of freedom.
- Derrelicte, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8Well of course White Castle is going to have the least amount of bad stuff per burger. It's hard to be unhealthier when you're being compared to burgers 2-3 times your size.
Lame. They should've compared whole meals instead of individual burgers. - unstop, on 11/13/2007, -3/+10You're right. In cases like that things get thrown off a bit. In most of the other cases though, it's ok. There were a bunch of different ways to put this thing together, and I went with the one that seemed to be the better, more practical choice (in most of the cases, at least).
- lasko, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8you can't compare whole grain bread to double cheeseburgers. if you're going to be comparing then it should be whole grain bread vs the bread on a double cheeseburger. some fruit and veggies and some lean meat will go a hell of alot farther than double cheeseburgers. actually the fruit alone (depending on the fruit) will go alot farther than double cheeseburgers.
- DJPhoenix, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6Seriously though, who eats one White Castle burger? The only time I ever get White Castle is when I'm hammered and I shovel down 10+ of those bastards. And I always regret it in the morning way more than the massive amount of alcohol I consumed.
