Mental illness sucks. - JoeHague, on 07/20/2009, -9/+4311. Move to Germany and buy a bus
2. Pick up all the old people at the fake bus stop
3. ?????
4. Profit! - grapesofbaath, on 07/20/2009, -4/+228Probably works best in a country with good mass transit like Germany. In the US, the old people would be thinking "***** buses, where's my Buick, oh there it is driving down the highway," and then run into the middle of the street.

- AmyVernon, on 07/20/2009, -0/+145Actually, it seems quite kind. Instead of basically locking them in the building, they can and do sometimes get out. I've known lots of people with grandparents with Alzheimers and it can be very scary when they disappear from the home and go wandering in search of a place they knew 50 years ago and doesn't even exist anymore. With the fake bus stop, there's a chance to get them to stop sooner and get them back in.
- EricSchC1, on 07/21/2009, -1/+124Maybe the new submitter has Alzheimer's.
- Rain12913, on 07/21/2009, -6/+121It does indeed.
Also, not to nitpick, but Alzheimer's is technically not a mental illness but is instead a neurological disorder. While the distinction is somewhat arbitrary and will likely fade over time, mental illnesses are treated by Psychologists and Psychiatrists, whereas neurological disorders are mainly treated by Neurologists. - andyb747, on 07/21/2009, -8/+1113 = http://tinyurl.com/69absc
- Y0tsuya, on 07/21/2009, -2/+103No in the US they need to set up a fake buffet restaurant.
- theword12, on 07/21/2009, -2/+98Sounds like a great idea...until I, a tourist, is walking down the street and is excited to have finally found a bus stop.
- Tofm, on 07/20/2009, -1/+93I visit nursing homes for my job, and a lot of them have the doors inside painted to look exactly like a wall. That ***** even confuses me.
- DeviantDragon, on 07/20/2009, -11/+83http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Fake_bus_stop_keeps_Alzh ...
My submission is incredibly old so I'm not knocking the submitter for taking credit from me or anything but just to show that it's really quite old news. - vtbarrera, on 07/20/2009, -8/+73Damn that's cold!
- Avaseal, on 07/21/2009, -0/+62Good news, everybody, we're extending arts and crafts time by four hours today.
- mikemehak, on 07/21/2009, -2/+63lol at the people claiming it's mean.
Would be it be better they just put up a giant fence with barbed wire and locked up the gates?
Maybe they could medicate everyone so they don't try to leave... - KingKeys, on 07/21/2009, -0/+57And then you're committed to the hospital/home/asylum... FOREVER!
(there's a movie in that, somewhere) - inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+45old peoples brains cannot function without country kitchen buffet

- picosan, on 07/21/2009, -0/+32My fingers hurt!
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -2/+34This is why assisted suicide needs to be legal. If I've become such a nut case that I need to be put into a home and supervised 24-7, then I pray my children will have the compassion to just put me down. Stop wasting societies resources (and making heartless "health" insurers wealthy) keeping people alive, on tons of medications, long after their mind has gone. We need to learn when the time has come to let go. We're more humane to our pets than we are to our own parents and grandparents.
- Fingersoup, on 07/21/2009, -0/+32I volunteer at a local nursing home and they give patients a non working cell phone when they want to call their family to come take them out of there. =(
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -1/+32Actually it is not cruel. It would be much more cruel to let them wander off and get lost. In that sense is is kind as well as brilliant.
- Ezrayan, on 07/21/2009, -0/+31...
- Chris_F, on 07/21/2009, -2/+31Hey, I may have alzheimer's, but at least I don't have alzheimer's!
Seriously though, that thing sucks. I may not have it or know anyone who does, but I was very delirious after almost a week went by without any sleep because of some serious insomnia problems I had. My short term memory was almost non-existent. I'd literally forget what I was saying in mid-sentence, just to remember a while later and try to finish it, just to forget again before I could open my mouth. That seriously is probably one of the worst fates. - EricSchC1, on 07/21/2009, -1/+30...with the freedom to go outside, at will.
- dancerathlete, on 07/20/2009, -3/+30At least they have a sense of hope for as long as they can remember it. Instead of knowing all the time that they can't go anywhere.
- Rain12913, on 07/21/2009, -0/+27@poppipop: You are incorrect. While a Psychiatrist may manage the medications prescribed to an Alzheimer's patient, Alzheimer's Disease is not a mental illness because it is not listed in the DSM-IV, the diagnostic text of all mental disorders treated by Psychiatrists. What is in fact in the DSM is ‘Dementia that is due to Alzheimer's’, and this small section is added simply to differentiate it from other types of Dementia that are the result of mental illnesses, such as Schizophrenia. Other causes of Dementia listed in this section are ‘Dementia due to a general medical condition’ and ‘Dementia due to the ingestion of a controlled substance’, both of which are not mental illnesses but simply causes of Dementia. I repeat, while Alzheimer's Disease may have Dementia as one of its symptoms, it is not listed in the DSM as a mental disorder. A better way to understand this distinction is to examine other medical conditions that produce Psychiatric symptoms, such as Syphilis or Lyme Disease, both of which have Depression as a symptom but neither of which are mental illnesses.
Alzheimer's is a neurological disorder, and as such, research into Alzheimer's is conducted primarily by Neurologists due to the fact that its organic basis is far more understood than that of any of the mental disorders listed in the DSM-IV. The only work that Psychiatrists and Psychologists do with Alzheimer's patients are behavioral and therapeutic interventions that are applied primarily in inpatient settings. This same work is carried out in the realm of other non-Psychiatric disorders, however, and even Diabetes and Obesity are researched and treated by Psychiatrists and Psychologists. Alzheimer's patients see Psychiatrists mostly because of the extremely high rates of comorbid Depression that are present, and because Psychiatric medication can indeed be used to treat neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's or Huntington's Disease. This does not, however, mean that these disorders are mental illnesses.
Like I said before, the distinction is somewhat arbitrary and will likely fade over time (as I think it should), but it is a distinction that is currently made by the medical and mental health communities in their classification systems. - Fleagleman, on 07/21/2009, -1/+27MATLOCK!!!
- Solkre, on 07/21/2009, -0/+26I need to stop clicking links when I'm at work
- WiseWeasel, on 07/21/2009, -3/+29South Park did it. They probably got the idea from that 'Fat Camp' episode (Krazy Kenny Show, Season 4), where they had an ice cream truck patrolling around the fat camp to catch fugitives.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -2/+27Lmao. Germans are awesome.
- codered1322, on 07/21/2009, -1/+26It is not cruel at all. These people would go off wandering through the streets and could be killed or lost for days if they did not decide to sit down at the bus stop.
- andpoi, on 07/21/2009, -0/+24Well now your back is going to hurt, because you just pulled landscaping duty.
- tmyprod, on 07/20/2009, -4/+27That is both horrible and endearing. What do I call this new emotion?
