- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, who is the government to say companies can't lie about their drugs? ***** nanny state.
/sarc - relic2279, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I love when teenagers or the ignorant call oxy "synthetic heroin" or even compare the two in that fashion.
I was a pill popper (just opiates please, thank you.) and a heroin user. The two are similar in the fact that they are both opiates. They both get you high by giving you great euphoria. But thats about it. I've used both drugs. I'm not proud of it, and I do not openly tell people this but at least on the internet, I can correct the misinformed without anyone caring the next day.
By the way, all opiates are "synthetic" Morphine, heroin and oxy are all synthesized from Codiene. One of the weakest opiates. Hell, I think they're even synthesizing that now... An opiate thats similar to heroin would be hydromorphone. Though, they don't prescribe that in the US anymore if memory serves.
Fentanyl patches have tiny amounts of liquid in them. Fentanyl is 50-100 times more powerful then morphine.
To all you highschoolers and misinformed;
If I had to pick to be high from oxy, or heroin I would choose the oxy. I enjoyed the high more, is was more potent less lethargic type of high. Now as an ex-heroin user that says alot. I perfer oxy over heroin. Heroin was always (to me) a second choice.
I think thats why people always relate the two. People don't realize that just because mom takes vicodin for migranes (or so she says) or uncle bob takes oxys for his cancer, doesn't make the drug harmless. To me, Oxy is worse then heroin. Theres a stigma attached to heroin. That same stigma needs to be attached to any pain medicine considering they provide the exact same effect. People either just don't realize or want to know. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"don't do drugs, do our drugs... they wanna to get you hooked on some legal *****" - chris rock.
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Because when used for proscribed purposes, smoking marijuana can't effectively stop post-operative and moderate to severe chronic pain. Now, if all you care about is a high, it still doesn't do the same thing. Oxycontin (Oxycodone is the generic name) is more like heroin. But if you don't really care and want to get some kind of high, it's probably more cost effective, safer, and healthier to smoke pot, I'd have to agree.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Lock them up like every other drug dealer, take away all money and possessions they bought with the money they got, just like every other drug dealer, and throw away the key, like they do to every other drug dealer.
Whats good for the gander, is good for the goose. - MadMaxx426, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"Sir, you flat out lied to the public and put thousands of people at risk. You contributed to the destruction of lives and families. I will now escort you to prison"
"But dear constable..... I'm rich"
"Oh...well then, please pay this fine instead" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7See what happens when you don't do drugs kids? No payouts.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was surprised that the 'doctor' working for the company didn't get his medical license revoked.
But I was even more surprised that the FDA, that most corrupt of federal agencies, did something honest for a change. - jamessavik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5600 million is a drop in the bucket compaired to the damage done.
Who knows how many people are in jail on charges related to Oxycontin and how much time they will have to serve. - WarfareArtist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7didn't bribe enough i suppose...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6WTF? How come oxycontin kingpins got away with a misdemeanor conviction, and their pushers were not punished at all? Is the FDA on drugs or what?
- everetts, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9There are going to be a few thousand redneck pill heads getting millions out of this now. I should have skipped college and just taken Oxy's.
- patrickbennett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6when are these guys going to be brought up on criminal charges?
- Shaman760, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Why not just smoke marijuana?
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Even if they lied about it, if you knew anything about the drug you'd know it's addictive. It is an opioid for crying out loud. Not that it excuses the lying about it, but there comes to a point when it's like the tobacco industry seemingly putting their fingers in their ears and shouting "nah nah nah I can't hear you!" over and over about the addictiveness of their products, while anyone with any knowledge at all about the particulars can tell you it is addictive.
- datastorageguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2one
- airquotes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2
@waterdragon
morphine certainly does cross the BBB youre wrong as well. confused with low bioavailability perhaps?
Heroin crossing it so quickly when injected is what gives the "rush", paranteral morphine does similar. - jamessavik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sorry but you clearly don't know what you are talking about.
Percodan use has declined and has largely been replaced by Percocet which has a different ratio of active ingredients.
Oxycontin is oxycodone or more technically 14-hydroxy-7,8-dihydrocodein-6-one in 10-100 mg doses.
It's like fly paper for addicts. - jcervoni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1.... this just in the FDA says its not lame Rush Limbaugh's fault he's hooked... whatever *sigh*
- chiapet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4They can have my OxyContin after they pry it "from my cold, dead hands"
- MexiNig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1pill popping is way more addictive than pot. it all starts with a vicodin, then the percocet, then the oxys.
unfortunately its becoming huge for teens nowadays... I have heard from heroin junkies, the high is much cleaner on oxys. plus for those who get it and dont take it, its a huge $$$ money maker.
ps: dont tell the old people missing their bottle of percocet - manicallday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not necessarily. it's more likely that some law firm will benefit from a class-action lawsuit then the actual addicts.
- magus_melchior, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, this was a case vs. the government. Perhaps the victims can squeeze millions more out through a class-action civil suit...
- LecherousVenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They plead guilty already. FTFA:
"To resolve the criminal charges, Purdue pled guilty to a felony count of misbranding a drug with intent to defraud and mislead. As part of the plea, Purdue will pay a $600 million settlement. That amount includes a criminal fine, restitution to government agencies, and over $276 million in forfeiture. In a separate civil settlement, Purdue will pay $100.6 million to the United States.
In addition, Purdue's current and former executive employees, Michael Friedman, Howard Udell and Dr. Paul Goldenheim, pled guilty to a misdemeanor violation of misbranding OxyContin by illegally promoting the drug as being less addictive, less subject to abuse, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications."
Ok, so it was a misdemeanor, not a PMITA felony.... - slapthemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmmm..............seems organizations needs counselling first.
- balibones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1y m3mn0n Why don't you check the submission times before calling Dup on a story. This was the first one.
- Beanbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that the miracle of modern pharmaceutical science is a truly amazing thing. It's certainly helped me get through some none-too-pleasant episodes in my life. That being said, I've never gotten addicted, so I can't speak as to that aspect of pharms.
Normally, I would probably put the fault of problems (addiction/dependancy, etc.) on the end user (for which the drug was prescribed-using outside of a prescription puts it right back at your own feet) for improper use of the drug. What can you do, though, when you find yourself dependent because you used it according to your doctor's directions, who got his information from the manufacturer?
Man...why can't kids these days just learn to smoke dope and drop acid? Good, healthy fun. That's what -that- is, yessiree. - jamessavik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Your analogy is severely flawed.
You might be able to go after Honda if their car is seriously defective, can cause injury or death in normal usage conditions and Honda's management knew about it from the start.
Otherwise it is just standard marketing BS. Let the buyer beware. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Interesting analysis. I have one thing to add, though. Apparently, one of the real drawbacks of Heroin (diacetylmorphine), with regard to health, is the fact that it does cross the "blood-brain barrier', that theoretical 'barrier' related to which drugs only get into the bloodstream and which ones can pass into the cerebro-spinal fluid, and thus, the brain.
Heroin does cross it, which actually makes it a lot worse than morpine, which does not, or even Dilaudid
,dihydromorphinone HCL), which also does not ( AFAIK.)
The problem is that, since brain cells don't produce toxins, they lack any cellular mechanism to eliminate toxins...so chemicals like heroin that get into them can persist, until they naturally decompose...which can be quite a long time. Thus, the effect of long term heroin usage can be described as killing a part of a person...the 'essence' part. (not a physical structure), as well as certain other physical toxicity.
BTW, actual derivatives of the poppy plant / opium, are called opiates, while the synthetic ones(Percodan/Percocet, etc.) are generally referred to as opioids. But I suppose synthetics using actual poppy-derivatives are still called opiates.
Some people seem to enjoy that walking-dead state. It's just a way of reacting to pain, anyhow. - AdaWakeman, on 01/02/2009, -0/+0I can’t believe they are playing games when it comes to such a dangerous drug! Oxycotin is the most addictive prescript drug! It can send you in a drug rehab in no time!

Your wrong, Im a slightly more informed junky. Morphine is not synthetic its one of the natural alkaloids of the papaver somniferum (opium poppy). Heroin is made from morphine crude base by "cooking" it with acetic anhydride, a chemical used to make dyes and bind asprin. Oxycontin made from oxycodone is processed from thebaine, another of the many natural occuring substances (alkaloids) found in opium, the sap of the opium poppy. - flohoff60, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Wonder how may cyanide tablets the drug companies could get the doctors to hand out
before anyone care enough to question it? - mygrayarea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1That's about right, he only believes in personal responsibility for democrats anyway.
- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Where does it say anything about a payout?
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Looking how the kids around here drive those Civics, I think death and injury is a definite possibility.
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Cool...now can we go after Honda for saying the Civic handles like a race car? Or that beer gets you chicks?
- bairmik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I think the headline is a little misleading. From what I understand, Purdue misrepresented the addictive and euphoric side effects to be able to keep the drug on the market to make money. Not to addict users.
It may be splitting hairs but I think there is a difference. - notfaded1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1How could anyone not know the what this stuff would do??? Percodan and Percoset has been around for decades... it's the same stuff and even in smaller dose and people has issues with it? It's rediculous that they even act like anyone didn't know what OC was.
- fanofgames, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0There are certain guideline and law regarding to prevent such type of matter but marketing is such a
magical entity that find many way out to promote such type of drugs.
