- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -2/+78so the FDA covered up this information to protect big business instead of american babies.
wish i could say i was surprised - b04155, on 11/29/2008, -3/+58FTA - "So stop buying conventional infant formula products and start feeding your baby what it was meant to consume: Human breast milk from a healthy, well-nourished mom who eats lots of omega-3 oils and superfoods." That's great if the mother can produce enough breast milk, but not all healthy, well-nourished women can.
- badqat, on 11/29/2008, -3/+51Excellent...is this the United States, or China?
- Harboggles, on 11/29/2008, -0/+38Oh well good. At least our government stopped in to...wait.....oh....*****.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 11/29/2008, -1/+39The FDA has always been fueled by big business, bribes, and lobbying.
Look at all the pesticides and hormones in our food products. Some of that stuff has been proven to be toxic and yet it's still "safe" for our consumption because it won't kill you right away. - Wrangler76, on 11/30/2008, -0/+33Funny, the FDA originally says that no level of melamine is safe for babies when news spread that the Chinese manufacturers were doing it. Now that US-made formula is also found to contain melamine, they decide to announce a new safety standard that the US-made formulas conveniently just barely pass.
- MadEnvoy, on 11/29/2008, -0/+30United States of China.
- bixby1, on 11/29/2008, -6/+34Great. My sister is already flipping out because I dropped her baby. Now I gotta' break this one to her just to take the heat off.
- cg4et, on 11/30/2008, -0/+18That's it, from now on, I'm only drinking breast milk.
- tgc1, on 11/30/2008, -1/+20Aspartame. BGH. Fluoride. GMO's etc...
- Wrangler76, on 11/30/2008, -1/+20No, the problem is that the FDA originally announced to parents that NO level of melamine is safe in infant formulas. Now they are backtracking when US-made formulas are found to contain melamine as well. Not only that, but it took an investigative AP team and a FOIA request to force them to release the results.
They didn't intentionally add melamine?
From the article: "Laughingly, the FDA claims the 1ppm of melamine in U.S. infant formula must have come from the manufacturing machines or food packaging equipment. And yet the AP is reporting that the expected level of melamine contamination from manufacturing equipment is only 15 ppb (parts per billion).
But the FDA's own tests on Mead Johnson infant formula reveal it to contain 245 ppb, or 1600% more than what would be expected to exists due to melamine contamination from manufacturing equipment."
Gee, I wonder if it's somehow better for huge, trusted American corporations that manufactures infant formulas to be incompetent and allow a potentially dangerous chemical (we're talking about babies' safety here) in their products, even when the FDA already announced that NO level of melamine in infant formula was safe. - Bith8654, on 11/29/2008, -0/+18Are you from the future?
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/30/2008, -11/+29How many years are we going to be cleaning up the mess BushCo traitors? It is a $15 test to check for lead, yet nobody at our FDA and import agencies tested, because it might impede business. Cattle ranchers who want to test for Mad Cow, are not allowed, because it might create a "standard" that other meat packers have to life up to.
Now this. What next? How low does it get, that our kids are ***** guinea pigs? We need to sue this family into oblivion. They won't ***** pay for war crimes, for lies, for treason. They got their crony Paulson getting almost a Trillion $ without oversight. Guess what we are going to find out in a few months? Nobody will know where it went, and everyone will stand around, looking retarded -- as if this were an excuse for a ***** Carpet bagger like Paulson who made $900 Million tax free coming from Goldman Sacks. Forever will I remember this treason.
This used to be BushCo, the Bush Crime Family, and then just the Bushies. Now I call them the Bush *****. The FDA and EPA were handed over to crooks, who surrounded themselves with incompetents, and they kicked out every descent person who raised an alarm. ***** Nazis are better, because at least they didn't ***** betray the Germans or loot the country.
OK, I had a bit of wine -- but damn, I can't wait until the next administration takes over -- it can't be soon enough. And if any of them act dim witted -- I'll toss them in the same pile. Obama had better not stand in the way - DickyT83, on 11/30/2008, -0/+16The breast is the best.
- dienaked, on 11/30/2008, -0/+15Humans have been using wet-nurses since a long freaking time ago. I guess that would still work.
You can also purchase breast milk if you really desire. - kemp34, on 11/30/2008, -0/+14They think of the American people as mindless sheep who need to be treated as children. It is really disgusting and shameful.
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/30/2008, -1/+15You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.
You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.
Either way they both got melamine in them! hah - tgc1, on 11/30/2008, -1/+15That entire agency needs to be ***** canned. ***** worthless. The entire thing. It's like a pimple on Americas ass.
- MrFunStuff, on 11/29/2008, -0/+13don't forget
http://digg.com/world_news/FDA_Scientists_Revolt_A ... - tgc1, on 11/30/2008, -0/+13Yeah, they're doing a bang up job aren't they?
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -5/+17This is way you breast feed.
- Conwaysb0718, on 11/30/2008, -1/+13WANTED: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. P.O. Box 322 Oakview, CA 93022. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.
- censormagnet, on 11/30/2008, -3/+15FDA has allowed aspartame to poison millions of americans for decades also
- higthekid, on 11/29/2008, -3/+14Im moving back to Mexico... I can't risk my kids welfare.
- censormagnet, on 11/30/2008, -1/+12i agree
what you need to remember though is that its not just the bushes
most of washington is corrupt evil traitorous pieces of filth now
its not going to be solved by simply tossing one family in prison (although that is a good start) - greensky, on 11/30/2008, -0/+11So the Bush FDA will not only make it legal formula to have melanine, but they'll probably bar small formula makers certifying their formula as being melanine free.
- michaelsmusic, on 11/30/2008, -0/+11"... however, the FDA changed its story. As of today, the FDA has now officially declared melamine to be safe in infant formula ..." We trust these people with what, exactly?
- sockpuppets, on 11/30/2008, -2/+12This is why I skip the formula and just give them beer instead.
- defwheezer, on 11/30/2008, -2/+12There must be a flaw in my intellectual model of the Free Market- apparently, businesses will NOT "self regulate" for the greater good. Gone are is our money and now, our health.
-Alan (I ***** canned the world economy) Greenspan - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -0/+10They hid the information from the taxpayers that provide their wages-then after the information was pried out with the Freedom of Information Act...they "abruptly" announce the products as "safe".
However- from the article: "Prior to these test results being made public, the FDA had published a document on its website that explained there was no safe level of melamine contamination in infant formula."
WTF! Pardon me if I find this latest conclusion hard to accept...this is an outrage! - Wrangler76, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9The formula was US-made.
- LenBaird, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9The safety of our entire food supply. No biggie, it could be something important.
- DSM93, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9Lawsuit?
- ryan631, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9Heads should roll, but this isn't China.
- blorc, on 11/30/2008, -1/+10Big government totally works. Thank God we spend our tax dollars on agencies like these.
- bipolarruledout, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9Why doesn't the war on (some) drugs protect the public from substances that are actually toxic?
- sniperpants, on 11/30/2008, -0/+8Thanks for protecting the public FDA. Why the ***** are we even paying for their agency?
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -3/+11Did it bounce?
- ScottMitchell, on 11/30/2008, -2/+9While some moms do it for "selfish" reasons like, oh, having to work a job, or for their own convenience, others may choose not to breastfeed because of lack of milk production, mastitis, thrush, or other painful conditions. Although I guess if you are myopic enough, you could consider that being selfish, too.
- mightytribble, on 11/30/2008, -0/+7Similar to groundwater, perhaps.
But the organic baby formula (Earth's Best) has *no* melamine in it. None. Nada. Zip. If they can do it, why can't Enfamil and Similac? - groo68, on 11/30/2008, -0/+7Babies don't bounce.
- kemp34, on 11/30/2008, -0/+7The FDA is a lapdog for major corporations who donate and lobby with millions upon millions of dollars. The FDA rulings then provide a buffer against lawsuits. They also make rulings that righteous companies cannot label their foods as such and such free, as it would highlight the faultiness of some of the other major food and drug producers' products. People need to wake up to the fact that just because there is some government agency that is supposed to look after your health, that does not mean they actually will. In fact, over time, it is almost guaranteed that they won't.
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/30/2008, -4/+10China just melamine rolled 90% of the United States
- bullhead2007, on 11/30/2008, -3/+9This has nothing to do with Bush you moron.
Both parties are corrupt.
Obama is bought and paid for like any other politician that is selected for us.
Our government won't fix itself. The politicians in power, save for a few like Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich, will never save us. We need to flush all the ***** out of DC, republicans and democrats alike. - FasterGun, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6People's Republic of America
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/30/2008, -0/+5um, you do?
- deema1, on 11/30/2008, -1/+6You are so right VitriolAndAngst. I am so disgusted with the Bush administration. First they forced every homeowner in the US to take every penny out of their homes with horrible mortgages and lines of credit and made everyone buy TVs and cars and furniture. He MADE us all do it. And now he's personally lacing baby formula with melamine. I saw him toilet paper our house last night and I had to chase him away with a broom. No wonder he takes so many vacations, because he's busy single-handedly destroying the world one family at a time. President Bush and his administration are the only corrupt forces in Washington and has incentivized companies to lace basic food items with deadly chemicals and carcinogens to line their pockets. I'm so glad that's now been solved because I'm going to look forward to our public servants going back to the beacons of integrity they've always been before GWB.
(Heavy on the sarcasm) - Koushiro, on 11/30/2008, -0/+5Breast is Best.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 11/29/2008, -0/+5No, not like caffeine. Pesticides mainly, they are oft-carcinogenic chemicals used to kill bugs and other pests that are put on our food.
If you want to read more about Pesticides in your food and what the FDA does and doesn't to. Check out the book 'To Buy or Not to Buy Organic' by Cindy Burke. It's fairly light reading but has a lot of insight about the situation especially regarding the FDA and pesticides. -
