- smindsrt, on 03/18/2009, -3/+24This is a nice article to read as I sit on my fat ass thinking about how much I hate to exercise!
- ChromaVita, on 03/18/2009, -0/+14I completely agree with the first half of your comment. For me it's biking. I love doing it, and it's also a great form of transportation. The 6pm/7pm thing doesn't really work for me being as I routinely go to bed at like 3 in the morning.
- anexanhume, on 03/18/2009, -0/+12Especially when they only need to count to 100?!?!
- Anand999, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8"Experts pin down exactly how much exercise u need to get fit" is exactly the maximum length of an article title Digg will let you submit.
I would have just done away with "exactly" myself and used that space to spell out "you".... - JackGrinnan, on 03/18/2009, -2/+9"Ken Fox, professor of exercise and health science at Bristol University, warned however that while 100 steps per minute was a good target for healthy walkers, it would be "dangerous to make this an across the board recommendation."
Come ON, how out of shape are these people? Unless you're in your 80s, I'm not really sure why this is even a discussion. Digg me down all you like. - twiztidsinz, on 03/18/2009, -11/+17………………….._,,-~’’’¯¯¯’’~-,,

- Eurynom0s, on 03/18/2009, -1/+6What if I take 99.5 steps/minute?
- SWiG, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5Lets do the math. We'll assume that each step is 3 feet and that you do 100 steps per minute. 60 minutes per hour. 3*100*60 = 18,000. 5280 feet in a mile. 18,000/5280 ~3.5 miles per hour.

*****! - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -1/+6I worked out for about 8 months and dropped 25 lbs... That was with about 45 min of weight lifting and 15 minutes of bicycling (80 rpm) 4 or 5 days a week.
Wasn't easy, but it's worth it imo. It's amazazing how much better I feel when I'm working out. And the ladies like it too. - ChromaVita, on 03/18/2009, -2/+7Well they'd need to count to 100 thirty times. The real question is, what do you do when you finally reach 3,000 steps in half an hour, but you aren't quite at your house yet? You can't keep walking, because that'd be more exercise than you need. Should you just stand there until the next day?
- TheMachine1, on 03/18/2009, -0/+53 mph ; energy 3^2 = 9 ; 2 miles in 2/3 hr ; 9 x 2/3 = 6
6 mph ; energy 6^2 = 36 ; 2 miles in 1/3 hr ; 36 x 1/3 = 12
My estimate is your wrong. Also part of the point of the article was getting your heart into the target zone. - nepidae, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4Start doing pushups. 5 minutes or so every other day and work up from there (you can look up specific programs on the internet). You can do it in your bedroom so it doesn't matter if you can only manage 1 on your first attempt and it doesn't matter how you look, you don't have to buy any equipment.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that you probably spend more time in a car than you used to as well? - Enche, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4So how many steps would, say, 3 or 4 speed on a treadmill for 30 minutes be?
- SkittlesUSA, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3Haven't experts been claiming to pin down exactly how much exercise you need to get fit for the past several decades?
- diggenerate, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3get a pedometer and find out for yourself. they are cheap.
- repmekevets, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3who the hell is going to count to 1000 while they're walking?
- C4Aries, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3a two mile run at 6 miles an hour would get me to about 2000 steps if im remembering right.

- retrolab, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2Does it matter? Women will still think they're fat and complain about it 2 minutes after you've picked up the controller.
- MikeyMoose, on 03/18/2009, -3/+5More than you're doing...
- Serinus, on 03/18/2009, -1/+3Going back to undigg this article now.
- SilverBack101, on 03/18/2009, -1/+3Not only will you have a companion to walk/jog/run with but you may meet someone who likes you. Women love guys who exercise and have dogs. Which reminds me...I need to get my fat ass to the dog shelter and adopt a pooch.
- lsocoee, on 03/18/2009, -1/+34?
- skipdog172, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2The "don't eat after X PM" thing is not true. It comes down to calories in vs. calories out. The most important eating habit to consider that will increase your metabolism, is to eat every 2-3 hours. If anybody is interested in nutrition, I highly recommend this article:
http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports ... - Groovydoo, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2Bologna! - If Each step is 3-feet long; that's an average walk of 3.4 miles an hour or 6,000 yards per hour. That's an average walking pace! It might do you good if you are obese but after a week or two of that you will gain little to no benefits. To be reasonable fit you have to work out at least 3-5 days a week vigorously.
- bacon_skoda, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2wait for Charlie Sheen to pull up.

- piper999, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2I think the point is that you have to elevate your heart rate to improve your fitness so doing it faster is better.
