- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Yay! We're winning the War on Hunger!
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Solution; food races.
Line up the hungry and the obese, officiating are those in the middle. He who gets to the food first, eats. The fat will lose weight until they start to win one now and then, the hungry will get healthier as they win all the races at first.
*****, I should run for Health Czar. - affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Will Eat For Food
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Look, morbid obesity is a disease! And like most other diseases, you're powerless to cure it on your own. Only giving yourself up to a higher power can help you.
It's not my fault I eat 5 Big Macs a day. I have a disease! - Threnody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Ultimately to tackle the obesity problem we need a change to our culture. As it says in the article, this is much less of a problem in Japan where physical activity is a normal part of the day. Sometimes the stuff people do here in Canada borders on ridiculous.
I once knew someone who would eat cinnamon buns with butter on them for breakfast. He found himself getting pudgy so he started taking a ten-minute walk every day! And if it's not some half-assed attempt at physical activity it's some crackpot diet-of-the-week. Sometimes I'm just amazed to be in a culture where most adults consider any physical activity to be laborious. - zacharychaos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11DDR could literally save the world... from themselves.
- beatmonger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's because the overweight figure also includes a number of people classified as hungry.
*hides* - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7BEST COMMENT EVER!
- kweee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"more overweight people across the world than hungry ones"
That's because all the overweight people keep eating all the hungry people. - jasonwc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Read: "The number of people overweight has topped 1 billion pounds across the world."
- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Some of the stuff is horrible... I know people who dip sticks of butter into sugar for dessert.
Which in my mind is disgusting, but they claim it to be good. - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Evolution takes too long. In 10-15 years, they'll roll out a drug that simulates a body's hormones that tell your brain that its full. So people will take a little pill before each meal and not eat as much.
They already have these drugs working. They just need to refine the side effects and get it approved. In 10-15 years it will happen.
The big problem will be screwballs who take too much of it and starve to death without feeling it. Eventually it will get banned because a few people are idiots, and the rest feel sorry for them. Then we'll all go back to being fatasses. - drlog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Wow, you must be really fat!
- henrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, if we applied the philosophy of carbon credits and emissions trading to food, there's nothing to worry about. We're more than breaking even! Thanks, Africa!
- ActivitY, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7people who say obesity is a glandular disease or whatever, are either fat themselves, or are friends/spouse with a fat person.
so, according to the fat peoples arguments - if i work out lots, eat healthy and fit, my offspring will also be healthy, fit and buff?
us healthy weighted people are being forced to pay for fat peoples things, out meals are more expensive, because they're bigger and they're bigger because fat people eat lots. - jasonwc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone notice the text under the picture: "The number of people overweight has topped £1bn across the world"
I'm not sure whether this shows the ineptitude and lack of editorial competence by BBC or a joke by the author. I hope it's the latter. - dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3is this good or bad? both extremes'll die off soon anyways
- bogomill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"And like most other diseases, you're powerless to cure it on your own. Only giving yourself up to a higher power can help you."
But that's only two of the 12 required steps. You need to pray more and look into yourself constantly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I stopped eating fast food and drinking soft drinks after watching Super Size Me. Been this way for 3 years now.
- nosatalian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People always have to whine about something, the bright side is that the world is becoming a better place and less people are starving than ever before.
Obesity is not a disease, its a preference. If people want to be fat more than they want to exercise or stop eating then let them, its not a problem that needs solving.
The only reason, I, as a tax payer give a damn about obesity is because my tax dollars are going to pay for these fatasses' medical problems. I say we stop providing government healthcare enitrely, but if the voters can't handle that, we stop providing medical care to those who are willfully obese.
And before all you fatties bury this post, for the love of god save your own money for healthcare. I'm coming out with a miracle diet plan that is known to work for millions- I call it "STOP EATING." - AirborneLemming, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My solution is to make exercise a habit.
People always seem to take a car rather than bike, bus rather than walk, or sit at home and watch movies all day rather than go to a movie theatre.
Out habits are changing to be more seditary, and work often involves sitting at a computer all day.
So try running for the hell of it, or take it to a greater extreme (as I'm starting to) and take up parkour. You would be surprised how many obstacles there are that we walk around that could be used as routine exercise, along with getting to places faster. - jonny5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3we should feed all the overweight people in the world to all the starving people in the world ;)
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Say what? Not dominant disease! People having too much to eat is not a concern of mine and I don't care for their overweightness, that was their choice. People with no food to eat do not choose their situation.
Focus on what's important, not what's dominant! - frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4hopefully .... i HATE fat *****
- aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unless you watched it at the Sundance Film Festival (which you may have), SuperSize Me was released in May of 2004. How exactly have you been this way for three years if you only started your "diet" after watching it?
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Fatness multiplies.
When you get a steak at a restaurant and a fat person eats it all they complain saying "hey the portions are too small." That's why we have restaurants like Claim Jumper where one steak could feed a colony of starving people. Because the fat people complained about the portions being too small.
One full serving for one person of steak is about the size of a deck of cards. - nipuL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Reminds me of that song "Underpants Go On The Inside"...
We'll be telling our grandkids about this, The Great Obesity Epidemic of 2000.
"Oh it was horrible Jimmy, there were cream pies and pork chops everywhere!!" - h3smith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the first time in human history, we have more food than we know what to do with, and people feel bad about it. Sad.
No, I don't think obesity is a good thing, fat people need self control (sans the 1% with actual medical reasons they get fat). And I wish the starving people of the world could have access to the food as well. But we know why those in Africa starve, vicious warlords. - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4all that hopping fat could move the earth off its axis
- Jowitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Well, at least we will have enough soylent green to last for a while.
- jasonwc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently BBC caught their error and changed it. They removed the pound symbol.
- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Depends what they were eating but that sounds like a load of crap
- spjmm0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe they will have a concert for me!!!
oh and we adopted from a skinny person, are we okay do get your approval?
Dumbass - hillerman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Feed the homeless to the hungry.
- avktm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok i took your advice went jogging and i lost the weight that made me fat ,i'm down to 150 ya baby
- spjmm0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so cancer patients have the corner on the market on disease? get real.
- MrPrefect, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Look, morbid obesity is a disease! And like most other diseases, you're powerless to cure it on your own."
Ask a cancer patient if obesity is a disease and see what they say. - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I say they should lower the price of the Bowflex.
- DiggCommando, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The answer seems simple! Feed the hungry with lipo-burgers! Mmmm! Voluntary Soylent Green!
- turricanz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"But that's only two of the 12 required steps. You need to pray more and look into yourself constantly."
I can't see my toes! - frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4then instead of feeding your fat face, go jogging
- dustinjr1993, on 02/01/2008, -0/+0stupid fat people! STOP EATING ALL OUR FOOD XD
- CurtHowland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Not to worry, evolution will take care of this problem too.
Those with genes that tend to store food instead of using it will be marginally less able to reproduce. After a while, those genes will be bred out.
Exactly the way that those genes came into common existence, as those who stored food lasted longer through the general famine punctuated by occasional disaster.
That said, if women would please stop being attracted to overweight guys, the process would work a LOT faster. Ditto for the guys.
I don't care how nice the person is, DON'T DO IT! Don't breed with fat people! Think of the CHILDREN! - avktm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3well I'm overweight and hungry
- cookiemonster01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nah we'd still be obese haha.
if only we could cut back on all those bags of chips we buy and give the change to kids in africa. - LucianSolaris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i'll have to try the butter and sugar thing...
mmmmm sounds good! - FinishdLawSkool, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4"Look, morbid obesity is a disease! And like most other diseases, you're powerless to cure it on your own."
What part of a disease makes you order Large everything when you eat fast food every single day? - remi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3That's worrying!
- Kohath, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"Been this way for 3 years now."
Shallow? - Lynx34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1If only that extra weight on people could magically be transferred to the hungry people. Then we'd have a bunch of healthy people and a few slightly less overweight people...
