- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+86I think toothpaste taste like crap after brushing my teeth with orange juice.
- felchdonkey, on 10/21/2007, -1/+55Which is why I only drink vodka in the morning, after I've brushed my teeth.
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38A question I've always wondered. I'll bet this is also why soda tasted really bad, as well.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I was thinking about this on my way into work this morning. I was drinking a Rockstar right after I brushed my teeth. (I hope my dentist isn't reading this). I was thinking to myself, god damnit, this tastes like *****. And what is the first story on the Digg homepage, why, the answer to my question no less.
Digg is awesome. - Fractl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23If you're already eating enough of your toothepaste to matter, Alzheimer's is the least of your problems.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I'd rather know why water taste so much colder afterwards...or after anything minty.
Interesting nonetheless - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22obviously since you've not had this experience, you've never had OJ after brushing your teeth, or you don't brush your teeth. (For the former, you should try it out....actually, for the latter, you should also try it out)
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25quakeIII, dude, take some chemistry classes.
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15dugg, with sadness, as my life now has one less mystery to ponder.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14and before?
- Crosshare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Musicaks, you're a sick sick individual.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, that was random, I read the tittle as
"Ever Wondered Why Justice Tastes like Crap after Brushing Your Teeth?"
Must be the early morning, anyways, thanks for the article/explanation. - conan359, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11According to wikipedia it is used to provide the foaming action we all know and love.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Beer is always good
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm waiting for that story.
- VioletArrows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Except toothpaste still tastes all sweet and minty, so what's that all about?
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I bet overweight people can lose weight by brushing before every meal
- mwosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good description, I don't even need to see the damn site.
- starvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Finally, the mystery of morning OJ-Poison-breath explained.
I think maybe we should all switch to a less acidic cranberry juice. Or Pomegranate juice. - dadrew1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10What in the crap are you talking about??
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Either way, pomegranate juice tastes like Robitussin.
- jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6SLS is a detergent that is only in there to make it foamy and has been proven to cause canker sores
- Fractl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wish this article went into some more detail...it sounds like a very interesting topic.
Who here has tried drinking milk after having a mint? O_o - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That's precisely why I never brush my teeth with toothpaste. It's all about the dish soap baby!
- sciencebase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's possible, but also possible is the fact that the citric acid in the orange juice is neutralised by the alkali in toothpaste to produce a nasty tasting salt. Maybe that amounts to the same thing as the additive "blocking" sweet receptors...I'll have to investigate further. I used to notice the same problem eating orange marmalade on toast after brushing.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Energy drinks taste like ***** any time.
- Hubajube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wikipedia's entry on Basic Taste answers that. Basically, mint activates the same receptor that's activated when it really is cold.

- hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I read it the same way, weird.
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And the gum turns to rubber.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That explain why coffee is tasting the same (I put no sugar in it)
- thatbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He was making a joke from the title of the story, was all. Brushing your teeth with crap would make juice taste like it.
- sciencebase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First entry in Google for orange juice and toothpaste says it's stannous fluoride, a compound of tin in toothpaste reacting with acetic
acid to give a metallic taste: tin. http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00216.htm
I think they mean citric, not acetic, which is a component in vinegar of course.
This site http://www.sciencemadesimple.co.uk/page50g.html confirms the laurel sulfate tale. I'd still side with the more generic acid-alkali issue as I suspect some toothpastes don't contain that specific additive. - dadrew1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tis not good when it takes that long for people to catch on to the joke... woops!
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@TheCount
It depends on if you like it bitter or not. I do, so the beer tastes better to me after brushing.
My brother-in-law who drinks Coors Light out of aluminum cans would disagree. - ultrarutter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't wait to see the follow up story: "Why eating pure sugar after brushing your teeth makes your tummy feel weird"
- Crosshare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another fun one to try: drinking cola or Mountain Dew while having certain types of chewing gum in your mouth. It does something to neutralize the sweetness and it tastes like you're drinking saltwater.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still have vivid childhood memories of biting into a pineapple slice right after brushing. Oh the humanity...
- mikecolby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Why is that ingredient used?
- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool
Learn sometime new every day. - yuppiexj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's gin
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1....wow, and I thought my Grandfather had an obsessive-compulsive disorder. It turns out that he was forgetting that he already brushed his teeth.
- thehum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Supposidly it also causes those little sores on your tongue, which is why I switched to Baking Soda+Peroxide Toothpaste. I've had less sores since. And juices don't taste like crap after i brush my teeth. I use crest with whitening, but any will do.

http://www.abc.net.au.nyud.net:8080/goldcoast/stories/s1669605.htm?backyard - Dakoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yep. acid + alkali = salt + water.
- CalipsoII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dugg just for the subject line, made me laugh. Good article too.
- Nogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about this: After you eat camembert or some similar cheese, orange juice tastes bitter. I am speaking of good French cheese, not the cheap ones without any taste. And I suspect anything citric will do as the beverage.
I am suspecting something in the rind of the cheese to cause this reaction. Any idea? - elipabst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"According to wikipedia it is used to provide the foaming action we all know and love.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate"
Exactly, it's a detergent that's found in all kinds of things like shampoo. The fact that they're claiming it somehow blocks only the sweet taste receptors makes me want to call shenanigans on this. I think sciencebase's reply below (that it's an acid-base reaction resulting in a tin compound) is more likely. - timusca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've also noticed that feces tastes like crap after bnrushing. Weird.
- arpad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since I've never tasted crap I'll have to take your word for it.
