- davebg8r, on 02/11/2009, -1/+25Obama cannot 'let' the states do anything. The states have that right. The constitution explicitly says so if only people would read it and follow it like they are supposed to.
- vtbarrera, on 02/11/2009, -3/+26I'm sure glad Obama is doing the right thing in terms of letting individual state's settle the medical marijuana issues. Hopefully federal government entities such as the DEA won't be intervening in state's issues anymore.
- normalkid0615, on 02/11/2009, -2/+22I don't think that we should be using Raid on Marijuana. I think it is fine by itself.
- sb66, on 02/11/2009, -6/+21DEA = Gestapo
- mithrasinvictus, on 02/11/2009, -0/+10He doesn't seem to be doing anything about it so far.
- oxdeltaxo, on 02/11/2009, -1/+11You make the assumptions that the federal government is supposed to be in our business in the first place. They aren't.
- Frankyfan3, on 02/11/2009, -0/+10Because the raids don't always go as planned:
http://www.cato.org/raidmap/ - erasedgod, on 02/11/2009, -2/+9Yeah, gross generalizations are fun, eh? They keep you from having to think critically.
There are plenty of people who value individual freedoms and don't smoke (or do other drugs for that matter), myself included. You saying the opposite is simply your attempt to convince yourself, nothing more. - Spartacusprime, on 02/11/2009, -0/+7Let's get rid of the DEA, it sucks up more money than is necessary. It's certainly done nothing to halt the use and spread of drugs in the United States.
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+7Obama said he's putting a stop to the federal government raiding. I hope this happens soon. I wan't an Obama supporter at first, but this is the kind of thing to turn that around. Our government has much bigger problems to deal with to be wasting resources on this *****. If he would just Legalize It, I would take one for the team and suck his dick. And I'm not gay, thats just how strongly I feel about this. If me taking a sausage to the grill is all it would take so cancer patients dealing with horrible chemo could smoke a bowl and actually not be nauseas for long enough to eat something, then its a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
- billbugger, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6The DEA and the ATF need to go bye bye. Constitutionally speaking, they are illegal thanks to the 9th and 10th amendments.
- MacDreidel, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6WAR ON DRUGS = FAILED!
Might be best to cut our loses and find ways to stimulate the economy and not continue to drive it to ruin...this war isn't saving anyone or anything. - FuzzplugJones, on 02/11/2009, -6/+11How many times does Roger Daltrey have to say it?
"Meet the new boss... same as the old boss." - TurboBeard, on 02/11/2009, -2/+6I'm livid right now.
- toxicshok, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4mmmmmm....pistol whip
- kemp34, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4DEA should be abolished.
- battmann, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4it's like the alcoholics like to pick on pot smokers, yet pot smokers are just more relaxed than them. guess they are just jealous!
- Sillywombat, on 02/11/2009, -2/+5Old news, yet they still havent stopped!
- erasedgod, on 02/11/2009, -1/+4You can't ride a motorcycle without a helmet because, like seatbelts, a helmet could save your life. There are people who are strongly against helmet laws. These are also state laws, as opposed to federal laws. It is irrelevant though. If you show me proof of marijuana being fatal, you'll have an argument. Felons owning guns, wife-beating, child abuse, indoor smoking, and drunk driving all put others at great risk (or directly harm them). Ingesting marijuana (not just smoking) affects no one but the intended user.
It is not our government's job to legislate a good example for children. If I had children, I wouldn't want them drinking or having sex or being fat (or stupid). Are we going to make those things illegal, too?
Morality shouldn't even come into this discussion. You know what IS immoral? The fact that we (the US) have spent millions (billions, maybe) of dollars suppressing the growth, transport and use of a naturally-growing and medically beneficial plant for no reason other than ignorance. That is money that could certainly be used to help people. - inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3There is no need for the DEA anyways, without prohibition there is no black market, no market means no money, no money is no smuggling, without smuggling there is no killing (what DEA claims to be preventing). So weed turns into nothing more special than the hops to make beer.
Fresh hops don't get you drunk, burning weed that is fresh doesn't get you high, coca plants are useless without large numbers, c'mon lawmakers GROW UP. STOP LYING. - Jimbozu, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3These raids are such a waste of money. I went to a Cannabis Club on Sunday (I think, maybe it was like Friday) of last week, and they, along with four other clubs nearby had been raided the night before, and all five of them were up and running already. The only thing these raids do is waste money, they are completely ineffective at fighting medical marijuana use.
- Frankyfan3, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Or maybe we could divert those resources and personnel towards fighting the growing illicit trade of human beings.
I recently heard from an expert on the subject of modern slavery that the USA spends 300 Million dollars more on fighting the War On Drugs than we do stopping modern slavery.
Personally, I find that a disgusting waste of resources. - billbugger, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3Take a stand like New Hampshire did.
- GamerXR72, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2I wanted to digg you for being sensible, but I equally wanted to bury you for socialism. This comment will have to do for both.
- ndrehobl, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3you said it man. so many people are obamablinded though and refuse to accept this. even the writers of this article are blaming the head of the dea for such raids, even though obama hasnt asked him to stop, and has the power to force him to stop the raids or appoint a different head to the organization. obama also has the power to pardon all those in jail for marijuana or "medical" marijuana arrests but has not done so.
- normalkid0615, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3mmmmm Gestapo
- gobbleplex, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2It's Gil Kerlikowski.
- oninbonin, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2HA @ sausage to the grill
The federal govt has no right to do what they are doing in this case. The DEA = pure evil. They perpetuate "The Drug War (tm)" by importing (bad) drugs. - TreeTops8, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Obama ran on change, but passes up so many opportunities to make good on change now that he's in.
- Spartacusprime, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Perhaps, but education is arguably more important than drugs.
- gobbleplex, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2Hey alapoet, what do you think of the possibility of your city's police chief being appointed Obama's drug Czar?
- bryguy89, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1I love being the only high person at a party full of drunk people, they're always so fun to ***** with.
- billbugger, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Hopefully they won't exist anymore.
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Interestingly, hops vines are in the same advanced dioecious family of plants as hemp.
- alapoet, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2Just tried the link again to make sure; it works fine for me.
- erasedgod, on 02/14/2009, -0/+1That's a lot of copy / pasting to not say anything new. Notice the word "smoking". Of course inhaling smoke into your lungs is harmful. Marijuana can be ingested in other forms. I'll give you a couple days to research who funded those studies before I ruin the surprise for you.
It's hilarious to me that you insult my "legal education", then neglect to elaborate or do anything but copy and paste reports, some of which, contradict parts of your argument.
Even if it killed me immediately upon ingesting it, neither the federal government nor local governments have a legal basis for telling me I can't. That's why it had to be done initially under the guise of taxation. After that, people like you were complacent enough that they could institute unconstitutional laws without opposition. - hasslinthehoff, on 02/11/2009, -2/+3Crack open the Doritos... it's time to celebrate.
- AllenAllen, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Democrats are tough on cannabis and its medical use. It isn't just the DEA, it is HHS and FDA. Google this about the Clinton administration "Donna Shalala Medical Marijuana" They were the ones who raided Berkly MM outlets. They were the ones who started threatening physicians. Total jerks. Bullies. They'd rather see folks choke on their own vomit than get some relief. Inhuman evil.
Ironically, it is simply the FDA classification, not some specific law that is the problem.
Change the classification and the DEA can't act. The President appoints the FDA chief and so far they've chosen to ignore science and make political decisions. That's wrong on several levels. The Senate should make the laws and have the courage to make the decision, not pretend it's out of their hands due to some FDA classification (when they approve people they know will make the erroneous classification! What cowards!)
You must write your representative. I'm a Democrat but disagree strongly with my party's position on cannabis. I'm not kidding... if you think Obama, or any of your Democratic Party representatives, are on your side on this... you're in for a one million volt shock. Most people write their representatives about the things they care about... include this issue when you do. Just google "write my representative" -- you will find your State Senator(s) but will need your 4+ zip to locate your district's Representative. - WaCkYmAk, on 02/11/2009, -2/+3DEA raids are nothing but pork. The only pork involved here should be bacon. Mmmmm...
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1The drugs are probably resold to the vendors by the government anyways. Would it be viable for the state to militarily defend the businesses, since they're not breaking any of its laws, and the tax payers are paying for protection right?
- rheaume, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2Yep, he is exactly the same as Bush in every way, FAILED PRESIDENCY AFTER 19 days. Yeah thats as pathetic and right wing as it sounds.
- billraydrums, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2Go have a drink, Kennedy. I hope the DUI fairy visits you.
- hppypnts, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1mmmmmm... whipped cream
- ndrehobl, on 02/12/2009, -1/+2obviously, obama lied, being that he could easily order the head of the dea to stop the raids, and he would be forced to listen, as obama is chief executive officer. if he did not oblige, he could be relieved of his duties and replaced easily. this is not on the head of the dea, this is on obama. why are people blaming the dea for this when obama is the one who would stop it? if obama cared so much about state law, why do his policies in all other areas not concur with this? he was just pleasing the crowd, hes not going to do anything. we need to elect a third party like the libertarians if we want change, not someone from the same old party who just says change a lot. did obama attempt to legalize marijuana while in office in chicago? no. so why would he do so federally? has obama pardoned anyone in prison who was arrested for using "medical" marijuana? no, so why would he care if others are arrested for it.
- Frankyfan3, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1If it were Norm Stamper, I think we'd create a holiday.
- ebcreasoner, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Don't knock it man. It's the bee's knees.
- WilliamDavis, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2And he probably won't.
- Frankyfan3, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1I know that. We know Norm Stamper is a member of LEAP, and wrote an editorial to explain why he is boycotting Kellogg's for sending the wrong message to kids,
IE: Drinking and driving is ok, but smoke cannabis at home as an adult, not ok.
At least Gil Kerlikowski knows who Norm Stamper is, and that the voter approved requirement to make cannabis possession the city's lowest priority has been a helpful policy and did not create more crime as it's detractors threatened.
