- djruden, on 03/09/2009, -3/+34In a nation with nationalized healthcare, that means your tax dollars have to pay the hospital bills for all these people because they can't handle good eating habits.
- ap1983, on 03/08/2009, -0/+31Who knew Britian had an obesity problem? And here I thought all of western civilizations vices were contained in America. Go figure!
- Velnich, on 03/09/2009, -1/+15In most cases, people don't run in front of cars to be hit.
- lewystud, on 03/09/2009, -2/+15Britain's got nothin' on Texas
- piratearggghhh, on 03/09/2009, -1/+13Don't forget the drinking too...beer has a lot of calories
- waydee, on 03/09/2009, -2/+14yeah but you are the fattest.
- Ryan121, on 03/09/2009, -1/+13It has been reclassified as a class B drug. Maximum 5 years for possession and 14 years for supplying.
- Nateon, on 03/09/2009, -4/+15Are you kidding me? Have you ever had a Full English Breakfast? Britain doesn't need America's help to become obese.
- EnderMB, on 03/09/2009, -1/+11First of all, no, British food isn't terrible and I cannot see where America gets these stupid ideas from, much like how Americans believe our teeth are awful, especially since we have a nationalised medical service and reasonable dental plans nationwide. My teeth are perfect and I don't know anyone that has had anything worse than braces. Either way, we don't have many great dishes but we have a fantastic range and the all-British favourite, the Roast Dinner is amazing. You haven't lived until you've tried Roast Lamb.
The reason why a lot of Brits are fat is convenience and a lack of cooking prowess. A lot of people can't or won't cook meals from scratch today, and a lot of families treat themselves to fatty fast-food on a regular basis. Not only that but our government and much of the older population seem to blame the media and advertising on why their families are so fat, hence a call for banning fast-food ads until later at night. In short, a lot of the problems stem from home, where a lot meals are frozen or microwavable, fast food is seen as an easier alternative and certain foods are alien to children.
It's a problem with society rather than advertising and what is available. If people weren't so thick or lazy then they would not waste money of pre-packaged or frozen food and would make it themselves. - WordsnCollision, on 03/09/2009, -1/+10I guess British food isn't all that bad then.
- StefanArak, on 03/09/2009, -1/+10And all Americans are stupid rednecks?
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -2/+11Wow. They gave you a passport?
- novenator, on 03/09/2009, -0/+9Take THAT Milwaukee!
- ETman, on 03/09/2009, -5/+13Oh brother. You try to throw that "FAT AMERICANS" line around for years, but when it comes to light that Britain just might have a weight problem, then that's America's fault, too, and not the fault of countless Brits who can't exercise a little self-control and quit stuffing their faces.
- Aroundtown27, on 03/09/2009, -3/+10Getting hit by a car isn't the fault of the person that got hit in most cases.
- vidar808, on 03/09/2009, -1/+8Turn off the TV, get some damn exercise, use the stairs, NOT the elevator or escalator, eat vegetables.
- Aitese, on 03/09/2009, -0/+6No, entirely the opposite...if you read deeper into it the it's usually lower income people who suffer the most from obesity. Healthy organic food, fresh fruit and vegetables and low fat options are actually more expensive than deep fried crap.
- jnoodles, on 03/09/2009, -2/+8I suggest you get out of McDonalds and go somewhere else.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -3/+9Well then all these fat ***** shouldnt' complain if they have to pay increased airline fees to cover their weight,or if they are forced to buy extra seats to not piss off the person next to them.
- peppersauce, on 03/09/2009, -1/+7US is actually a world leader in the obesity field.
- nowhereelse, on 03/09/2009, -4/+10@Nateon That's exactly the point. The Full English was around for over a hundred years and didn't lead to an obesity epidemic. You're mistakenly assuming that the problem with American fast food is the fat content. It isn't. The problem is the sugar and starch.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5You don't know what you're talking about.
- WoollyMittens, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5Tea FTW. :) Saves me a lot of lugging around bottles of pop.
- gl77, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5i had no idea people wash down their breakfasts with soda. everyone i know drinks either coffee or juice with theirs. where the ***** do you live? Willy Wonka's factory?
- Gguillorn, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5damn dude, some people just aren't 32 inches across. I'm pretty sure if I wore a size 28-32 I would crack my pelvis. Nothing to do with fat verses skinny, it's more an issue of some people being broader. Also, a 28 inch on a full sized man is a little strange for a medium, that just sounds like a very thin* person.
*thin, not fit. - nowhereelse, on 03/09/2009, -8/+13The UK didn't have an obesity problem until it borrowed American food ideas. It's pretty much the same worldwide; upward trends in obesity tend to follow the import of American fast food.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -3/+8But Digg would rather talk about how fat Americans are. By coming here, I've learned that we are the laziest fattest and worst country on Earth.
- jynweythek, on 03/09/2009, -5/+9ha! so americans aren't the only fat lazy ones after all!
AMERICA! ***** YEAH! - Velnich, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4gasp, leave my beer alone!
- peppersauce, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4A full English is not an everyday breakfast, and it is a relatively low carb meal. Also it might be washed down with a cup of tea (possible 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar?) not a super Larged bucket of carbonated sugar solution. Snack culture has taken off over here in the last 3 or so decades, people eat lots of sugar, chocolate and carbs , and people eat ready meals packed with high levels of sugar and fat. Also people drive every where and spend hours in front of the TV!
Going to France as I do regularly the population is much slimmer and helathier looking overall. French women have much better figures! - peppersauce, on 03/09/2009, -2/+6Britains food culture was as rich and varied as France, Germany or Spains, until the cooking skills and recipes stopped being handed down in most families during the industrial revolution. WWII and food rationing was the nail in the coffin.
Stews, casseroles, pies, puddings, roasts joints, game and poultry of every description were the daily fare of the British, not to mention all the seafood, fast food in England used to mean oysters.
British baking is still some of the best in the world. - vidar808, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Should we remove fast food venues and televisions because some people refuse to use them effectively?
- omgwtflawl, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4@peppersauce
Actually, French waistlines are on the rise as well, and they will catch up with the Americans and the British in a few years. - Rockkybox, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4That Jamie's school dinners was the best indicator, he showed a picture of a carrot to a roomfull of kids and they all went blank, then show them the macdonalds M and they were all clamoring to give the answer; then when he replaced the food with heathier stuff the fat chav parents were waddling up to the school bars with burgers and passing them through, he spoke to a doctor and she said that some kids got so little fibre they were vomiting up *****
- Biscuitz, on 03/08/2009, -9/+13Last I checked, it was their lives to do with as they please, so if that means they want to eat themselves to death, they have that right... right?
- BDOUG, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3I question the validity of this study. Aren't Brits a lot happier and less stressed-out than Americans even though they make less money on average? Maybe the economy is finally bothering them and they are turning into "stress eaters" like us here in the States. I hope not. I don't overly romanticize the UK (been there in person for starters) but I do like their sense of humor and perspective on life which many of us neurotic "yanks" seem to be missing.
My pet non-scientific theory is if older Americans weren't so hung up on all things sexual we might not be as fat as a country, too. We aren't too good about taking care of Maslow's hierarchy of needs here in the states and we probably over compensate with the snack foods. - Rockkybox, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3No in the UK its still pounds
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3And no one is really doing anything about it.
- FaithlessReason, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3"In you face, Milwaukee!" - Homer Simpson
- Barackalypse, on 03/09/2009, -2/+5We are the fattest on this list at 30.6% obese, compared to the UK's 23%:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_obe-health-o ... - vidar808, on 03/09/2009, -2/+5Turn off the TV, get some damn exercise, use the stairs, NOT the elevator or escalator, eat vegetables, consume less calories. Is it really that difficult?
- CasieNow, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3yeah its annoying as hell. They call it a 'disease' so they can get mad sympathy while they spend their money on trans fats and chips.
- moocowrat, on 03/09/2009, -2/+5well if they'd have lost some weight maybe they could have avoided the car altogether?
- zeth006, on 03/09/2009, -3/+5Funny, isn't it? Their best foods are Thai and Indian.
- fugazied, on 03/09/2009, -1/+3Unfortunately... However there is a good range of low carb beers now, and some of them actually taste good. Apparently they just brew the beer a bit longer and the end result is a lower carb beer *shrug*.
- novenator, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2lol, nice. I must be pre-programmed.
- johnkemp, on 03/09/2009, -2/+4You'll never wrest the crown of lard from the US!
- ddoorn, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Hey, let's thump our chests with pride over the USA having inspired and initiated a whole WAVE of unhealthy eating that is sweeping around the world as more and more countries emulate our wonderful ways!
We are doing our best to infiltrate every last pocket of isolated folks around the world allowing multi-national food conglomerates to profit off the fattening of the globe. - gl77, on 03/09/2009, -4/+6i love how the British are always quick to point out and make fun of how Americans are so overweight yet they deny any sort of epidemic in their own backyard.
