Eating one sausage a day raises cancer risk by 20 per cent
dailymail.co.uk — Eating 1.8oz (50g) of processed meat a day - the equivalent of one sausage or three rashers of bacon - raises the likelihood of the cancer by a fifth, research shows.

- JackStowe, on 03/31/2008, -26/+11Good article! Children are the most affected, I guess. They like sausage very much. Parents should be aware.

- chrillen, on 03/31/2008, -0/+11Intestines they are :P
Germans and other people have been eating sausages for ages now and they don't have a higher rate of cancer than other people. Can the public please stop dramatizing stuff?- smacksaw, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4And Italians eat tons of preserved meats as well.
- danomagnum, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Yeah, if sausage and bacon are bad for you, I would have to imagine 2 cans of Vienna sausages would do you in
- flashback99, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8the daily mail can ***** off.
- ElWizardo, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1That article was written with the co-operation from the SPAM Corporation! It's a conspiracy!

- saxreturns, on 03/31/2008, -0/+11It's not a good article, it's the Daily Mail.
- slvrbullet87, on 03/31/2008, -3/+9Have a seat right over there.
- Browntowne, on 03/31/2008, -4/+8It's not just sausages that contain Nitrites.....it's your bacon, your smoked meats, and any types of 'cold cut' meats...people need to realize that their health is the greatest resource.
- ShugNinx21, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1So, after 2000 + years of people eating sausages, bacon, smoked meats, cold cuts I'm now supposed to believe that it's killing everyone? And cold cuts? Am I not supposed to eat any meat after it becomes cold? Or only if I eat them cold, so if I warm them up then it's all good?
- HealthyElijah, on 03/31/2008, -7/+5When you are a child you have many more cells replicating. If you feed the cells poor fuel and low nutrient food then guess what happens. There is a book called Disease Proof Your Child that talks all about how to cancer proof your child! It references everything with scientific peer reviewed studies too. You can still lower your risk as an adult! Nutrient Density can help!
- DonTazeMeBro, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3They should also be careful of the processed foods and oils used in them and industrialized meat, as in growth hormones and letting the animals eat their own dead... then again Europe doesn't allow growth hormones in their cattle.
- kaelyiesta, on 03/31/2008, -2/+7Not really. A better article would have mentioned that 20% is actually close to noise. It sounds dangerous and scary, but most serious health risks studies report on increases 500% or more. Any statistician worth his salt would laugh at this and eat a plate of sausage to spite this article.
When you have 1 person out of 100000 getting cancer and then study a group that eat sausage daily and find that they get cancer at a rate of 1.2 per 100000 people, you should realize that that increase is statistically insignificant. I didn't see their methodology but I suspect that even if it was an accurate study, it wouldn't be something to worry about. - Chompy, on 03/31/2008, -0/+15A life without sausage and bacon is not a life worth living.

- akumasakana, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1I beg to differ. It would probably be better that you die at 80 healthy, than at 75 because cancer ravaged your colon.

- macweirdo42, on 03/31/2008, -4/+36In the interests of being fair, let's consider the actual numbers here. I had trouble finding British cancer statistics, so I decided to use American cancer statistics instead. Yeah, I know that might be flawed, but I figured they're probably similar enough, and at any rate, this isn't a research paper, it's just a digg comment.
Now, according to the National Cancer Institute, there are a combined total of 148,810 new cases of colon or rectal cancer diagnosed every year. The current estimated population of the United States is 303,641,000. From this, we get roughly a 0.04% rate of colon or rectal cancer in the United States. Going off of this study, an increase of 20% brings the total cancer rate up to roughly 0.05%, or an additional 29,762 cases of cancer every year.
Keep in mind, these statistics are from the United States, not from Britain where the study was actually carried out, so the actual numbers are likely different. Just wanted to point out that even if this is true, your actual chances of getting cancer from sausages are small.- stoanhart, on 03/31/2008, -0/+8Thank you! I was going to post something similar. I absolutely hate headlines that try to scare people with phrases like "raises cancer risk by 20 per cent," when the real numbers are nowhere near as scary as they sound.
That being said, cutting down on processed meat is certainly a good idea - people eat too much of it, but it's not going to give 1 in 5 people cancer, as the title can suggest at a quick glance.- Myonosken, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Its the Daily Mail, whaddya expect?
- wecaanation, on 03/31/2008, -3/+1You made the flaw of assuming that everyone eats sausages.
- DrDragun, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2PER YEAR. 0.05% per year over a 70 year lifespan is 0.9995^70 = 0.966 so that would be a 3.4% chance to get it over your whole lifetime.
- macweirdo42, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2Sorry, sorry, you're right. Of course, the difference in percentage chance of getting it over the course of a lifetime is still around 0.7% (if I'm doing the math right).
- stoanhart, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Yup, 3.4% chance of getting cancer over your life if you eat a sausage a day, versus about 2.8% chance if you don't. So, a 0.6% increased chance of cancer over 70 years for a sausage a day.
I don't eat processed meat every day, but I'm not going to let this scare me off when I want some.
- stoanhart, on 03/31/2008, -0/+8Thank you! I was going to post something similar. I absolutely hate headlines that try to scare people with phrases like "raises cancer risk by 20 per cent," when the real numbers are nowhere near as scary as they sound.

- atticus8, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Doctors have discovered that it is in fact laboratory testing that causes cancer. They subsequently apologized for not noticing it earlier. All tests will now be conducted in gazebos, while all laboratories will be converted into gyms and Starbucks.
- gfxl, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Air doesn't cause cancer...wait...well it does if you live in china.

Make your own, just like everything else you make yourself, it's a lot better for you. - idslite, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2Dang, guess I'll be getting cancer soon... I just ate 5 sausage links this morning for breakfast.
- BRODEL, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2No.. it says one a day.. you ate five. You're fine.
- saxreturns, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5I hate having to say this every damn time. Daily Fail = not a reliable news source. Not to mention that people will say anything causes cancer to sell a few more newspapers.
- isage, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3I'm sure Michael Savage would agree ;-)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TpUxxls8iiE- solid12345, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1I don't support Savage but come on the guy is hilarious he is so over the top, why people get angry instead of laugh is beyond me.
- IlliterateJedi, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5Mrs. Featherbottom: Ok, who'd like a banger in the mouth? Oh...right, I forgot; here in the states you call it 'a sausage' in the mouth.
- naonao, on 03/31/2008, -0/+12Sorry, but this was on the Daily Mail. Buried just for that. Sensationalist *****.
- coheedcollapse, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4I think I just need to stop reading articles that say "X causes cancer" because nearly everything causes cancer now. I don't want to fear the ham sandwich I made for lunch.
- norman619, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I hate having to be the one to break it to you but sex and masturbation cause cancer too...

- HealthyElijah, on 03/31/2008, -6/+1There is a book called "Disease Proof your Child" that explains how to cancer-poof you child! It talks all about this stuff. When you are a kid is when you are most vulnerable because your cells are replicating a lot (growing). Glad more stuff like this is making Digg's front page! Eat veggies Peeps!
- nero28, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Since when have they started making a veggie Peep? I liked the sugary ones better...
- norman619, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1You do know that cancer also has a genetic component right?
- itzmattu, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Meat or GTFO!
- bluesatin, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0'When you are a kid is when you are most vulnerable because your cells are replicating a lot (growing).'
Since when are kids the ones with the highest rates of cancer o.O
- BadseedJR, on 03/31/2008, -1/+13A new study shows everything you like to eat is bad for you.
- freshgrease, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5Eating one sausage a day causes risk increase of 20%. In 5 days you are damn near guaranteed of getting cancer. Damn my luck ran out.
- norman619, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Don't forget. Each breath you take raises you chances of death 100%.
- Stochio, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Yes, and flipping a coin twice means that you have 100% chance of heads coming up.
- Stopher, on 03/31/2008, -1/+11Finally, someone is taking a stand against "Big Sausage."
- hurtmetomysoul, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5Push button, receive cancer!
- GravitySpec, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I see what you did thar... *chuckle*
- morogolus, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6What doesn't cause cancer these days? You can't eat anything good anymore, everything has to fat free and lean cut. The joys of eating a hearty meal or enjoying a nice after sex smoke have been replaced by morbid fears of withering away from some flesh eating cancer. Our diets have been reduced to a few carrots and a bowel of rice a day. Pick your death people, you can either drop dead of a heart attack or die slowly of cancer and there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it so live while you can!
- HealthyElijah, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2A lot of things don't cause cancer. Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Beans, Seeds, Grains. In fact they actually prevent cancer!
- TheN4meless, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Last I heard, those may cause cancer too, due to all the pesticides, and hormones, and stuff used on or in them.
- morogolus, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1824158.stm - Vegtables linked to cancer
- catalysis, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1There are plenty of things that don't increase your risk of cancer by 20%

- rocko_stazetti, on 03/31/2008, -8/+7Maybe the Jews are on to something!
- nero28, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4That was not even close to funny.
- john2kx, on 03/31/2008, -3/+4if you knew what they put in sausages, you'd understand.
- BrandonSh, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Wait.. you mean to tell me that there are people that don't know what are in sausages?
- unomeasjon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0goes to show you that tobacco isn't all that bad. People point fingers at ciggarette companies and dipping tobacco companies when really everything in this world causes cancer to some extent... Hell, toothpaste causes cancer.. Goes to show you that "too much of anything is bad for you" is a true statement not just somthing your mom says to you.
- Wargalas, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Richard Simmons is doomed.
